[RBW] Re: 650b'd romulus

2016-09-24 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks Erl, I appreciate the kind words.

I might go all the way to 165mm myself - I just measured floor to pedal on
the rom vs the saluki and the saluki has 9cm clearance (with pari-moto 38mm
and 170mm crank), whereas the rom has 8cm clearance (with 42mm hetres and
175mm crank). so i ought to be able to even things out with a 165mm crank.

[RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!

2016-09-24 Thread René Sterental
What a fantastic bike! I cannot believe this is the last batch. I thought
it would not be possible, but I like it even more than the Betty. The fact
that it's my correct size probably has a lot to do with it. But it's more
than that alone. Being able to place the saddle further back (Darn Brooks
with its limited rearward positioning), the longer stays, the overall
feeling when riding it is pure bliss. Truly just ride!

I rode 14 miles with a friend this morning, then met my wife for breakfast
at our favorite place in California Ave., and I was having so much fun that
I just didn't want to go back home. Kept riding to Palo Alto Bikes in
downtown to show it to my mechanic, then went onwards to Stanford where my
oldest daughter just started her MBA and managed to catch her so I took her
for brunch as well, although I didn't eat. Then finally rode home, since I
had to pack as I'm traveling this evening.

Some first impressions:
- Wowed by the B67 Select. I keep wanting to sit a bit further back, but
it's quite comfortable and pushed all the way back. I did ride it with
padded knickers, but tested it for a short spin on regular shorts and found
it comfortable. Especially on the upright (not 100%) position I like.
- The Ahearne cockpit with Brooks slender grips is just fantastic.
- The shifters on the quill are just perfect for this bike. My mechanic
loved the setup.
- The 44mm tires are amazing. Tolerances for fenders, as you can see on the
photos, will be probably fine, but on the tighter side in terms of extra
clearance for safety.
- Like the Teltro brakes very much. Did swap their pads for the Yokozuna
salmon ones RBW sells.
- Added my custom aesthetic touches as you can see in the photos. The
kickstand with its own shellacked tape will be added when I get back. So
will the rear rack. I was planning to go with the Pleitecher rack, but
after seeing the bike built, I can't help but think it has to get the Nitto
rear rack. Another excellent improvement on this last series is that
braze-one were added in the seat stays higher than the dropout to allow for
the mid sized Nitto rear rack to fit. I like it much better since it goes
closer to the seat stays and the saddle.

Anyway, here are the photos. Enjoy!

[RBW] 650b'd romulus

2016-09-24 Thread Sky Coulter
I've been wanting to try 650b on my romulus since I saw Leslie's ram
conversion. Then I was reminded again by Erl's rom conversion, So with
soma's recent 20% sale i picked up a 650b wheelset and changed up the
romulus:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/140959259@N03/29822103061/in/dateposted-public/

I'm pretty happy with the change. I still need to swap out some parts and
refine some details, but i mostly just used parts I had around. The cranks
on the bike are 175mm and i do worry about the cornering clearance,
especially giving the large platform pedals i like. So i'm hoping to switch
that out at some point. But for now I'm glad I finally took the plunge -
makes the bike so much more enjoyable for me.

[RBW] Re: Tire trouble & puzzlement

2016-09-24 Thread Jeremy Till
Interior casing failures can happen from manufacturing defects. I've seen
it a fair bit, most commonly on continental tires. I doubt that it's from
anything you did. Tires should be tested well past their maximum listed
psi so I doubt that a short period of high pressure (you probably didn't
even ride it at that pressure, I would take it) would be the real cause of
such a failure.

[RBW] Tire trouble & puzzlement

2016-09-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
Yesterday afternoon while out for a short but pleasant ride on the Saluki,
about 10 miles around a loop and five miles from home, I suddenly became
aware of a slight bumping sensation, which I surmised was coming from my
front tire. I couldn't see anything wrong with it but rode the last 5
miles very cautiously. At home I found a bump right across the tread. The
tire is a nearly new Pari-Moto. I removed the tire and on the inside
discovered an inch long slit in the casing.

Unfortunately, I bought the tire early last Summer, then decided to
experiment with the Fatty Bumpkins which came on Pat's Betty but didn't
actually fit very well. Recently I realized I wasn't riding the Saluki
much and suspected it was the tires which were leading me to avoid it.
About two weeks ago I put the new Pari-Motos on and fell in love with the
bike again.

So, bottom line, even if I was certain this was a mfg. defect it would be
hard to make a claim now. I tried putting three rolls of electrical tape
across the slit but the bubble returned.

I cant think of any way the inside of the casing could have failed with out
anything coming through the tire. The only other hypothesis I might have
is that in order to seat the tire properly I had blown it up to 85, which
is 10 more than the recommended max. After the I was sure the bead was on
straight, I let some air out but don't own a gage and so didn't recheck the
pressure. Still it seems pretty remote that I could have damaged it.

Re: [RBW] Re: 64 cm Orange Ram Update

2016-09-24 Thread Eric Karnes
All good points. One more observation: watching this list the last year,
I've found frame sales tends to go better for the seller than full bike
sales. Not that you can't sell complete bikes, but many of the posters here
(myself included), tend to build up their own rigs and often have enough
spare parts banging around to complete at least one bike (again, myself
included). In addition, many of us have personal preferences for parts and
personal needs for stem length, crank length, gearing, handlebar width, etc.

That said, if it was a 62 and I was in the market for a road bike, I'd jump
on it!

[RBW] SHIPPING CASES FOR A BIKE

2016-09-24 Thread Kellie
I'm sitting at home after bi-lateral hand surgery dreaming of riding the
C next year. What better to do than plan? I've asked about Amtrak, and
though I've had success receiving and sending a bike using a box, I'm
anticipating more bike shipping as I plan more rides in other locations.
Any recommendations for cases? I'm intrigued by Chainreactions Pro carrier.

just a guess, but a 64cm bike is a BIG bike... even in Grant's "go bigger"
mentality... $1,500 seems very reasonable, you just gotta find the right
person that needs a bike that big... I can tell I have an almost brand new
Ibis cross bike on http://forums.thepaceline.net for $1600 with no bites,
and that's a $3k bike new... I think it's just a buyer's market right now
with plenty of choices... if your bike was more my size, I might be all
over it... an orange Ram is one of "grail bikes"... ;^)

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-24 Thread Jim D Massachusetts

I do not care for the look of the bosco bulls that came with my Clem (H). I
like the look of the choco moose bars on the Joe Appaloosa much better. I
like that the choco bars are flatter with less rise. I have contemplated a
switch. However, in the riding I have done so far, I have found the
standard bosco bars to be very comfortable and I will probably stay with
them for a while. I am concerned that Riv is going to stop carrying the
bosco bull bars because they say they are hard to ship. Has anyone put
choco bars (moose or normal) on their Clem?

Re: [RBW] Re: 64 cm Orange Ram Update

2016-09-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Alan: I went back and looked at your original post (I find it useful to
include the original FS post and photos in bumps) and it looks like a very
nice bike and actually a good deal especially with rack and bags.

But I've found over the years that demand will swell and dwindle; you might
list the bike in a few months and find several offers; OTOH, there are dry
spells.

Also, I've found out literally dozens of times, that unless you adamantly
buy and build cheap and used, it is very rare to get close to one's money
back on the sale of a bike or frame.

I seem to recall buying and then a couple of years later selling on a Ram
frameset for about $600; granted I was owner # 2, if not #3, but this was a
mid-curve 58 cm frame of the later model that takes 35s and fenders, and
the frameset was in good condition. Demand for a 64 is bound to be less and
more sporadic.

I also recall selling a 56 cm, original model, original owner Sam Hill,
nicely augmented with front low rider bosses, and finding less demand than
I'd wished -- I finally sold it as a well built complete bike (but not as
nicely built as yours!) for, IIRC, $1,200.

This bike might interest someone on the Boblist, which I think is
considerably bigger than the RBW list though there is great overlap;
perhaps you are not a member of that list? I know that the Boblist
listminders disapprove of joining just to sell, but this bike ought to
interest so many that perhaps they'd make an exception.

(Steve: are you listening?)

Aside: If you ever consider selling the 175, 42/30, 50.4 bcd Sugino
chainset, I'd be interested in talking.

[RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!

2016-09-24 Thread René Sterental
Hi Tim,

Photos will come later, but on the Cheviot, since it's a mixte, the top
tube intersects the seat tube in the middle, not at the top. For the rear
center pull brake, you need the cable to be on the top of the tube so the
cable yoke can be in front of the seat tube. Photos will clarify. And on a
mixte for centerpulls, you only need one brazen-on on the front near the
head tube, not both. But that single braze-on needs to be at the 12 o'clock
position. On the Betty they were at 2 o'clock and some people were able to
pull it off. I learned it a few weeks ago. My Betty had a front Paul
centerpull and a rear Silver brake (like the Tektro).

Will report in clearances between the tires and the fenders later today.

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-24 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Although my Clementine was a naturally comfortable fit out of the blocks, I
did give myself time to adapt to the upright position and the Bosco Bulls.
I have no issues with getting up out of the saddle to honk up a hill with
this setup. And of course it it no problem to gear down and spin up. I will
not be touring any time soon, I look forward to reading about your
experiences out on the long road with a Clementine. Bon voyage.

[RBW] A list of what I like most about riding my new Sam

2016-09-24 Thread Broccoli Cog
Now that I have had some time with my Sam I have adopted a “Just Ride”
approach to enjoying it. I thought it would be fun to share a short list of
the things that have appealed to me most. Feel free to reply with list of
your own.

Riding in regular clothes (my favorite)
Flat grippy pedals
Bar End friction shifters (so simple)
Noodle Bars wide and comfortable
Cloth Tape properly shellaced
Quill stem raised up just high enough
A non wedge saddle bag that actually fits more than a multi-tool

[RBW] Re: 64 cm Orange Ram Update

2016-09-24 Thread alan lavine
I'm rather surprised by the lack of interest in the Ram...is my pricing way
off? How about $1500 for the full bike, $900 for frame? Feel free to make
offers that are reasonable.

Thanks, Alan

Re: [RBW] Re: Surly Pacer sizing

2016-09-24 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Thanks guys.

I was toying with the idea of something a little lighter and sportier than
my 56 Sam.
The Sam felt a tiny long for me with Noodles, even with an 8 cm stem. Much
better since I changed to Albas and an 11 cm stem a couple years ago. Bars
more or less level with the saddle depending on fitness etc.

Since Surly won't allow their dealers to ship, the Bob Jackson end to end
Audax was a tempting alternative. With the weak pound i could get a frame
and fork shipped for around $700.
They suggested a 22.5 of 23" frame which works out to either just shy of 58
cm or a bit over. Either way would probably be fine.

Unfortunately, as my wife has correctly and repeatedly pointed out, I live
in an apartment and have no room (or need) for another bike. I could
replace the Sam, but I don't think I want to.

To get you ready! It's finished minus the rear rack, the kickstand and as
stated, the fenders.

Sweet dreams!
