RE: [RBW] Re: BLUG reveal of an incredible custom

2017-02-04 Thread olofstroh
My custom Riv from 1999 – JB paint in dark metallic cinnamon still better
looking – has 44,5 cm chainstays. At that time Grant complained that he
couldn´t get his hands on longer ones so his thought were probably already in
that direction.

Rides very, very nice though, also with the „short“ stays.

I think the longer stays (47cm) are there to predominantly compliment the
intended performance of the bike and not just for tire (up to 42mm) clearance.
Looking at the RBW geo charts, the 63 AHH has 45cm CS and fits up to 43mm tires
while the 62 Hillborne CS is at 45.5cm and fits up to 45mm tires.

[RBW] Re: BLUG reveal of an incredible custom

2017-02-04 Thread panog
@John H.

The 47cm chainstays were Grant's decision and seemingly one of the twists
he did on my Hilsen-like custom. The thinking is that there is no reason
for shorter than 47 considering also that my SH is at 80.5cm. The notion
here is being positioned less on top of the rear wheel which would affect
comfort. Grant also mentioned that the longer stays would not affect the
ability to adjust the line the bike takes around a turn.
The 47-49cm stays are more evident at the Riv touring style bikes ( ie
Atlantis and Hunq) vs. the more roadish style Roadeo. Even longer stays in
excess of 50cm appear to be the direction RBW is now taking with the newer
Appas, Rosco, etc
My experience with these is very superficial and limited to a couple of
hours on an Appaloosa. Until now the longest stays I had on any of my other
bikes were 43.5cm on my light touring and 41.5cm on my racing-like. I could
do a wheelie at will with either; particularly easy on a steep up-slope.

Re: [RBW] Re: RAWLANDS PORTEUR RACK INSTALLED ON CHEVIOT

2017-02-04 Thread Jon BALER
You can easily get longer struts, as they are common with salsa, tubus, and
other rack companies. Just don't use nitto struts, as they are slightly smaller.

I had to use longer struts with Salsa Marrakesh, which has the mid-blade, low
rider, rack mounts. I also had to use a long spacer (30 mm) for the top mount,
so my tall bag would clear in front of my bars. The rawland rack mounts very
close to the head tube. I really think they should have designed an adjustable
mount.

I rode the GAP-C last summer on a Hunqapillar. The C, while my favorite
half, was pretty bumpy. If you want to do more adventure rides, I'd suggest
the Appaloosa because you'll get the clearance for fatter tires and
fenders. It will ride fine on pavement. Have fun on your trip!!!

P.S., feel free to direct message me if you want camping recommendations

Ride difference between my Sam and my Appaloosa (prototype) seems to be in the

Having owned both, I would say the major differences are tire width, chain stay

flimsy for touring!

Currently with an Appaloosa for tire width flexibility.

Interesting. It was Paul Theroux who snidely used the term "bobble hats" in

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the coldest August I ever experienced was an

This could turn into a "Yanks are strange" versus "Brits are weird" thread,
easily.

Re: [RBW] Re: RAWLANDS PORTEUR RACK INSTALLED ON CHEVIOT

2017-02-04 Thread Jon Dukeman
Sean,
I bought the Rawlands Rack after trying a Nitto Pot luck rack.
It would not fit due to the legs that attach to the eyelet on the fork drop
out were too short to fit over a 700c38 tire with fender.
Like you I wanted a wider rack than a Mark's rack. Also Marks rack is rated
at 4.4 lbs.The Rawlands capacity is 22lbs.
Marks rack is $140 Rawlands is $80.Rawlands only comes in black.
Another rack you might like is the Pass and Stowe, capacity of 25lbs but a
bit pricey at $280. I have one on my Sam.It's a great rack.
Are you planning on carrying panniers???

Re: [RBW] Re: OMG! Egg misguidance from Rivendell

2017-02-04 Thread Ray Varella
Patrick,
Flipping eggs is a fluid motion, gently work the pan in a slightly
downward arc away from you at at the outermost point of the arc, give a gentle
flip while returning the pan back towards youto catch the airborne omelette.
Be sure to make sure the contents of the pan are loose and you can gently shake
the pan and see the omelette (or other contents) slip and slide around the pan.

You can practice with a skillet and a handful of dried beans.
Once you are no longer spilling beans all over the floor, move on to food.
You can also practice with a tortilla, once you get the hang of it, you'll be
flipping most things with out utensils.

The shape of the pan helps too.
My egg pans are old thin carbon steel with flared sides.

Just for something to do today, I made some soft boiled eggs as per Will's

We don't have egg cups in out house anymore, so I let them use a shot

2017-02-04 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick, you have to have flip it without a spatula. In other words, with a
flip of the wrist. Use a good, non-stick pan with butter. Let the bottom get
nice and done. With a circular motion get the omelet moving around in the pan,
then, once it's sliding well and toward the front, a flick forward and up. It
works great. It impresses the ladies too :-) I worked at Denny's for a bit in
the 70s and flipping an omelet was the only thing I learned (besides to never
eat at Denny's).

Thanks for sharing your pictures. I'm in the process of gathering the odds
and ends for my Cheviot build. I ordered one of the recently produced grey
models, but have yet to take it out of the box. Anyway, I'm intrigued by
your photos. Why did you choose to go with the Rawlands rack? I've had my
eye on one of the Soma porteur racks - I particularly like the Soma Deluxe
Porteur rack, but I wonder how well it will play with the side pull brakes
that I plan to use on my Cheviot.

I would love to hear comments / see pictures if anyone has installed a Soma
Porteur rack on a Cheviot. It seems like going with a porteur rack would
provide much more support than something like a Mark's rack with a Wald
basket. Anyway - love to hear what others have experienced.

Re: [RBW] Re: OMG! Egg misguidance from Rivendell

2017-02-04 Thread Jeff Lesperance
We go through up to 2 dozen boiled eggs a week in my household, a majority
of that consumption is from me. I typically cook a dozen or so at a time,
and go with the cold egg into cold water, bring to a boil and as soon as a
boil is achieved, turn off the heat, cover and let stand for 9 - 10 minutes
then immediate ice bath. This makes for a softish-firm yolk, not chalky
overdone, not underdone/runny.

I have tried all sorts of methods and tricks to try to make peeling easier,
including salted water, vinegar in the water and steaming, but nothing has
worked better than using at least week-old eggs, preferably closer to two
week-old eggs. We get fresh eggs delivered to our house weekly by a
somewhat local farm, and I've taken to having to order enough to keep a
general backlog of eggs so that I don't have to boil fresh eggs, as I know
peeling them will be a nightmare.

Boiling eggs will top helmets as most contentious topic.

Bring eggs to boil covered. Take off heat, let sit for 6 minutes. cold water

[RBW] Ordering to delivery timeframe

2017-02-04 Thread William R.
I know you are talking about Riv production, Waterford frames. But I think the
way they do it is a cause and effect of their size and the lean machine that is
Riv. I really enjoyed the experience of getting on the Appaloosa pre-sale. The
savings and the service or "help" that I was giving to Riv by paying up front
was clear. The waiting and anticipating was half the fun. And the reward at the
end of the line was a great product that checked every box when you think of
what we've all come to expect with confidence in Riv. And you get even more
when you order one of the Waterford built models. I would take them at their
word with maybe a month padding too. If you order now you should have it in May.

I ordered an Atlantis last Aug. and received it the first week of Nov. But

2017-02-04 Thread Garth
FWIW , I always drop my cold-from-the-fridge eggs directly into the
boiling water and only rarely does one crack, and if it does it seals very
quickly. I boil about 8-10 at a time. I let the water boil again with the
lid on, stop the heat and just let them sit in the pot w/lid on, as in just
forget about them, even naturally cooling for hours. They always peel like
butter whether warm or store the in the fridge to peel another day :)
Having boiled tons of eggs in past restaurant daze, I found this rather
straightforward approach just works, meaning when you have to peel dozens
at a time you want them to peel easily.

I never had good boiled eggs (I like them medium-to-hard) until I learned
to put them in the pan with cold water, bring to a boil, and then time.
Perfect every time. Dropping eggs into boiling water was inconsistent and
lead to broken shells at least half the time. YMWNV.

Ron, you've got my stomach growling! +1 on using at least week old eggs for
ease of peeling. I fought that like crazy years ago until I read that. Also,
cage free organic seem to peel easier as well. As far as the yolks, which I
like softer too, I drop (ease with a spoon) them into boiling water then remove
after 7 minutes here in Kansas (altitude 690ft.). The softness isn't always
consistent though. Sometimes they're a bit too runny. I also think that putting
them in the cold water and boiling for 4 minutes is great but requires too much
careful observation for a pretty lazy guy like myself...

Provide 2 cm clearance and "folding-up" is far less of a concern.

On 02/04/2017 12:52 AM, panog wrote:

Thank you.

An issue with metal fenders could be the so called "folding-up" when
sticks caught by the tire are pushed up under the fender as the tire
rotates forward. This could result in the fender "folding-over" at the
crown, abruptly stopping the motion of the bike and causing the rider
to go over the handlebars. The SKS fenders, that RBW advocates, use
safety release tabs where the fender stays connect to the dropouts.
These are designed to release and free the fender so it does not get
squished under the crown.
Very valid concern, specially with deep tread tires that tend to pick
stuff as they roll. My use is predominantly paved roads and smooth
tread tires so the chances for this happening are significantly
reduced, I hope.

several hour-long telephone discussions pertaining to the
intended use of the bike, handling characteristics, etc. I
distinctly recall him emphatically mentioning that RBW is not
in the retro recreation scene. Neither was this my intention.
I wanted a Rivendell, with the performance features Riv's are
known for and with a few amenities that make sense for my use.

Following with the features list Bill posted:
1. /Seatstay pump peg:/ During my daily commute I have to
carry the bike up a few steps. I do that holding it by the top
tube. The typical pump install under the TT would interfere
with this. Same reason for going with the internal brake cable
TT routing instead of the CX routing version which I am not
aesthetically fond off.
2. /Frenchie chainstay slap guard:/ I typically use the
self-adhesive VO leather guard. Every six months or so I
usually peel it off and replace it when it gets too dirty as I
often ride in the rain. Glue remnants left behind need
scrubbing with thinner to be removed. The rubber chainslap
guard, suspended over the CS, will alleviate that.
3. /Under the fork crown fender boss:/ I think it makes
installation of fenders without using a L angle easier.
4. /Dynamo wire guides:/ I think it makes for a neater
installation of the wiring and allows easier/quicker removal
of the wire (without having to cut-off too many zip ties) when
a non dynamo-hub wheel is used.

BTW, Mark Nobilette did ask if I would have preferred the SL
dropouts for totally hidden wiring but I opted out because I
have several non connector-less hub wheels and need to be able
to use them from bike to bike if need be.

[RBW] OMG! Egg misguidance from Rivendell

2017-02-04 Thread Justin August
I learned how to do perfect hard cooked eggs and have never looked back.
Boil water.
Put eggs in steamer basket (not in the water) and steam with lid on for 12
minutes. You can leave out or refrigerate immediately it's up to you.

The way to get the shells to peel off best is by using eggs that are older. The
pH changes and that is the major issue in shells adhering to the egg.

Soft cooking would probably just mean changing the time to something lower like
7 minutes of steaming.
