Re: [RBW] 10x200 challenge complete

2017-10-29 Thread Bill Lindsay

I think the Hillborne is the ideal Rivendell rando frame.

I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that anybody would want or
expect out of a randonneuse that the Hillborne does not deliver. Some
people like to do brevets on ultra light carbon road bikes, and perhaps
those people would gripe that a light Hillborne build is like 23 lbs
instead of 17, but that's definitely not me. For a long distance road
bike, 622x38s are ideal. Wider than that on 622 rims is cool for bumpabout
riding, or dirt, but not paved brevets. Narrower doesn't get you anything,
either, so a bike with clearance for 622x38s plus fenders is perfect, for
me.

You want something reliable, comfortable, stable, and efficient. The
Hillborne is all those things. You want attachment points for necessary
rack and fenders. Having something that is well made and beautiful to look
at is a bonus. If we were to take up a collection and rounded up $3500,
and you all insisted that I buy a custom Rivendell identical to my
Hillborne but a pound and a half lighter, I'd happily do it, but $3500 to
save the weight of half a bottle of water is a dear price. That pound and
a half would save me, what, a minute or two per 100 miles?

I've gone thru a few, never really utilizing them very well. My most successful
usage has been putting a water bladder inside and being able to drink from the
straw, which is surprisingly revelatory while riding. This is mostly done for
camping so that I can put alcohol in one of the bottles.

[RBW] Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-29 Thread Joe Bernard
The 12-36 with a long cage rear derailer is a good start. Right now you're
running the small ring and rear cassette from a race bike, which is a total
waste on that lovely frame. See how you're doing with the expanded 1x8-or-9,
then you can always change the cranks and add the front derailer back later if
you need 2 or 3 rings up front.

Plus I thought it was funny to spend money make to make my bike slower.

[RBW] Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-29 Thread Antone Könst
718 Cycles in Brooklyn just led a great
overnight 'Micro-tour' to Beartown Mountain Park, MA, which I did on my
Cheviot. It was an s240 if you don't count the 3 hours each way on the
train and the 40 minute ride to Grand Central. Total was about 40 miles
each way, so it was more fun than work but I'm not complaining about that.

The ride was wonderful, really really fun, with the leaves changing, and
accidentally adventurous because I brought a friend who I thought had more
riding experience (he'd never changed gears and is developing some serious
scar tissue on his chin after attempting a downtube shift while going down
a hill pretty fast). The way up was blue skies and we got some surprise
trail riding in for a number of miles, which made my Barlow Pass tires
worth the $. On the way home we had pouring rain from 5:30 am straight
through, which was actually more fun than on the way up - and it was also
pretty much down-hill for ~40 miles. The rain made me appreciate my
Carradice bags, which I hung on a Jandd front (they are rear panniers), and
made me appreciate a little less my Sackville Shop sack which became a very
useful bucket for my kit to float in, despite folding the zipper down. I
know, it's a California bag, but it was a bucket in NY, CT, and MA this
morning :). I still love it.
My Chev was incredible, it was super stable down hills fast (my Paul Racers
were not so useful at the bottom of these hills, in the rain), and my
fendered tail light and Dlux front light were increidbly useful with the
dynamo hub.

*My question for you, after the trip* is *how do I add a granny gear?*
Right now I'm 1x8 with 34 in front and 11-26 in back, and the steeper hills
killed me, especially because I was carrying my friend's gear too. Do I
get a new 12-36 cassette and a Deore XT, or do I get a wide/low crankset
and put my front derailleur back on? I honestly have no idea, I'm new to
thinking about the drivetrain creatively. The randonneuring guys with us
seemed very happy with their 3 chainrings, and the people on their 1x9 or
10 set ups also seemed happy, the Rolhoff people didn't recommend it. So
I'm at a loss, please advise!

Congratulations on surpassing your distance goal. I am curious to know what it
is about the Hillborne that makes it suitable for the SR series? Is it mostly a
matter of it fitting most comfortably? I've heard so many good things about the
Hillborne, but never really as a randonneur.

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-29 Thread Jay Connolly
I’ve used them plenty, exclusively for bike packing. We rode most of the GDMBR
in 2015. My wife’s XS frame was too small for a practical frame bag, but my XL
frame had lots of room. On that ride, there’s plenty of hike-a-bike—or there
was for a couple of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-fit riders. The narrower
the load, the easier the pushing. Because of clearance issues on the XS frame,
my wife could not run a big seat pack, either. She ran panniers. Pushing a bike
up 15% grades with loaded panniers is awkward and was more difficult for her
than for me with my narrow-profile load. Single-track riders also appreciate
the narrow profile, for obvious reasons. Of course, you can bike pack with any
configuration that works. My explanation is informed by a set of assumptions
that show I bought the hype. In practical terms, though, we found there was
some merit to the hype.

Re: [RBW] 10x200 challenge complete

Thanks to all for the kind words.

Patrick Moore inquired:

"Out of the 10 bikes, which would be the easiest to ride day in and day
out? Perhaps, with ~3X the miles on the RLT9 than on the others, this might
be the favorite?"

I'm not completely sure what you are getting at with "easiest to ride", but
I think I might. If I'm understanding you right, then I'd say the Samuel
Hillborne is that bike. It's perfect. The 200 miles on the Hillborned
definitely went the fastest, and I was sad that they were over so fast. The
Niner Seven Fiver is really dialed, and I'm proud of it as a build, but I
wish it were steel. The fit and handling are spectacular, and I love the
Lauf Grit fork. For mixed terrain riding, and serious drop bar mountain
biking, it's the right tool for the job. Maybe I'll have Steve Rex make me
a steel frame to move the Niner's build over. All of my long road rides
this winter and spring are going to be on the Hillborne, though. I'm
considering taking a run at an SR Series on the Hillborne. I possibly will
follow that with a mixed terrain SR Series on the Niner Seven Fiver. If I
hadn't pulled the trigger on the Lauf Grit fork, I definitely would have
put all the extra miles on the Hillborne.

[RBW] SFR Marin Mountains 200k 10/28/2017 ride report

2017-10-29 Thread Bill Lindsay

Epic long ride report for an epic long ride. Grab a beer

As many of you know I did a lot of riding over the last three months. A big
part of the motivation was to prepare for what might be the most difficult
200k brevet route in America. The Marin Mountains 200k covers ~128 miles,
with ~40 miles off-road, and with ~13,000 feet of climbing. Despite the
unique challenges presented by the course, the same timing rules apply as
if it was a flat-paved brevet. Riders who want to 'complete' the brevet
have to make it through the timed controls on time, including the finish
control which closes at 13 hours, 30 minutes. I'm pleased to report that I
successfully completed the Marin Mountains 200k yesterday, with a precious
little 26 minutes to spare. I've done a few 300k brevets before which were
very challenging and ran a little bit longer than my ride yesterday, but I
think it's probably safe to say that this was the hardest single day ride
I've ever done.

The brevet started at 6AM in The Presidio. This is a park and former
military base at the northern end of San Francisco, right next to the
Golden Gate Bridge. The group of riders was much smaller than I'm
accustomed to for a San Francisco Randonneurs event. The trail portions
require a permit with the park service and that limited the roster to only
30 riders. Despite that limit, it's my understanding that only a few were
turned away. The extreme climbing and off-road portions had most SFR
members choosing to ride the Winters 200, and/or the Del Puerto Canyon 200
instead. Two of the riders that arrived were not given a brevet card. One
wanted to sign up that day, but the limit was reached. Another forgot to
pack a helmet, so he got a DNH. Both riders chose to ride anyway, but knew
that they wouldn't receive RUSA credit. At that hour it was still pitch
dark. Thursday and Friday had both been quite hot, with temperatures in San
Francisco getting well into the 80s, but the fog rolled in Friday night so
it was closer to 50F at that hour. We knew when the fog receded, things
would be a lot warmer, so many chose to suffer a chill and pack light,
instead of dressing warm and having to carry a bunch of clothing all day. I
decided to split the difference. I went without knee warmers, but wore arm
warmers and a reflective vest over a wool jersey. I had a bandanna around
my neck. No extra gloves. That turned out to be just right. I needed to
wear everything at the start and everything was back on at the end. I did
make one big packing mistake. One thing I like to do to pass the time and
the miles on a long day is to film a music video. I carried my smallish
movie camera with the intent that I would look out for short shots that I
would edit together to a rock song. I had two songs picked out (Green Day
"21st Century Breakdown", and The Strokes "Modern Age"). I ended up getting
a fair bit of footage, but the battery crapped out before the halfway point
after which I felt like a dope for carrying it.

We took the traditional SFR oath, solemnly promising not to do stupid
stuff, and at 6 sharp the intrepid group headed off through the Presidio
towards Golden Gate Bridge. It's a fast ride across the bridge at that
hour, with minimal winds and zero tourists. We descended into Sausalito and
the group quickly split into two equal groups. I hung on with the faster
group, and looking back, I have to assume that most of the slow half didn't
finish. I would end up coming in at 13:04, and only a small number of
riders arrived after me. During my day at the back of the fast half, only
two riders passed me from behind. It's my guess that all the riders in
front of me finished and maybe 10 of the 15 behind me at the start got
DNFs.

After just a few flat miles through Sausalito and Northern Marin, we turned
onto Highway 1 and headed up Mount Tamalpais. This is another stretch that
is infinitely more pleasant in the wee hours of the morning with far fewer
cars. The route turned onto Panoramic Highway and at ~1000ft, we started
our first off-road stretch on Gravity Car Road. This trail is wide and
gravelly, steep in parts but still totally doable on a wide tired road
bike. One rider in that I ended up riding with a fair bit was on a White
53cm Roadeo with a red headtube. She was running Paul Racer M brakes and
~35mm tires and she did great. I was on Bruce Gordon Rock and Roads
(584x43). The top of Gravity Car Road becomes Old Railroad Grade, and the
sky is getting light. Here's a view to the west from Railroad Grade:

At around mile 20 we spit out to the road, the highest paved road in Marin
County. At this point it's natural to feel pretty good. Nearly 20% of the
climbing is done, and one of the five dirt sections is complete, but the
real tough sledding is coming. The next

Kudos. No, your reports were interesting, not annoying.

29 miles per day doesn't sound like much in the abstract, but it's pretty

[RBW] 10x200 challenge complete

2017-10-29 Thread Bill Lindsay
I had a six week sabbatical from late August to early October. I decided I
would 'ride a lot', and I decided to give structure to that goal by
challenging myself to ride 200 miles on each of 10 bicycles over the 93
days of August, September and October. On Friday the 27th, day 89, I
finished up my 200 miles on my Rosco Bubbe Road, which was bike number
ten. I will probably be riding my new/old Univega Gran Premio for the
remaining days of October, so the final tally for the ten looks like

1. 1973 Windsor Carrera Sport: 208.8 miles
2. 1985 Schwinn Tempo (650B): 201.5 miles
3. Rivendell Samueal Hillborne: 214.1 miles
4. Niner RLT9 (650B): 609.3 miles
5. Black Mountain Road (home): 206.8 miles
6. Black Mountain Road (mom's house): 205.1 miles
7. Rosco Bubbe Mixte Step Through: 245.5 miles
8. Gunnar Two-speed singlespeed: 204.1 miles
9. Niner Air 9 Carbon: 215.2 miles
10. Rosco Bubbe Road: 212.1 miles

Include a few bonus miles for my HubbuHubbuH tandem and my Univega Gran
Premio, I've got a running total of 2545.4 miles.

Even though things fell into place nicely, some things turned out a little
different from how I expected. I thought that with work I would end up
doing roughly 500 miles in August, 1000 miles in September, and maybe 700
miles in October. Even though I only had two or three sabbatical days in
August, that turned out to be my biggest month in mileage, with 1007
miles. September, which I had completely off from work, will turn out to
be the month that I rode the fewest miles, at 772 miles. October is at 756
miles, with three days left to go. I only had two days where I rode over
100 miles, and only 11 over 50 miles. So, it's not like I was living on the
bike. I could easily envision this kind of pace during retirement, provided
I'm healthy (lob willing).

When I posted a 'complete' post on Instagram, a coworker thanked me for
earning him $10. He bet on my success and it paid off, which is cool.

As you obviously will notice, I only went WAY over 200 miles on one bike,
my Niner RLT9, aka the Niner Seven Fiver. I did a bunch of pre-rides for a
very challenging 200k brevet, and then completed the actual brevet
yesterday, so the mileage really added up. I had the rest of the 10x200
challenge under control, so I considered my extra Niner mileage almost
independently.

Setting a few achievable and measurable goals, months in the future, was a
really enjoyable experience for me. The El Cerrito High School Mountain
Bike Team has a pre-season Goals form that all the kids fill out for the
upcoming season, so I went ahead and filled it out for myself, too. Having
a plan and sticking to it can be a way to motivate oneself when inertia
sets in. What I found was that having a set of goals that were on-schedule
and on-target seemed to completely prevent the inertia ahead of time. I
honestly never said "crap, I have to ride THIS stupid bike again?", or
"gah, I really don't want to ride today". That intertia avoidance was
definitely assisted by the fact that I drink a lot less alcohol now. I even
took a month holiday from beer in September. I don't think I was a heavy
boozer before, nor am I completely dry now, but there's no question I feel
better in the mornings when I consume less.

I was 180lbs on August 1, best-case. I set a much longer than 3 month goal
to lose 20lbs. I've lost 12lbs so far and I've moved the target to 155. I
expect that this continuing goal will help me keep my diet and other habits
healthy, so I don't lose things that I've gained. I'm considering putting
running back into the activities I do, partially because it takes a lot
less time to get the work in, and partially out of envy that all my racers
on the El Cerrito High Mountain Bike team are running on the cross country
team for their off-season work.

Thanks to the group for your kindness in letting me blather on about
myself. It would have been very easy to be less generous. Some of you get
these posts over email, and I'm sure some of you said to yourself "HIM,
again!?" Hopefully it wasn't too tiresome.

[RBW] JuJu on that Bike

2017-10-29 Thread LeahFoy
Maybe you all heard about Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu
Smith-Schuster's bicycle being stolen at practice. He is the youngest player in
the NFL at 20 years old, and he does not have a driver's license or a car. He
goes everywhere by bike, and he is quite attached to his Ghost bicycle from
REI. He rides around with his Steelers helmet acting as his bike helmet, made
even more wonderful by the chinstrap and GoPro attached to the top. I know
this isn't Rivendell, but I'll chance posting the two videos of the story
anyway because they are so uplifting and energizing. Plus, it's a win for
biking as life.

Short version: there was collective outrage and Steeler Nation mobilized to
search the city for JuJu's stolen bike. I hope the first video works because it
is only a Facebook link and I cannot find it elsewhere online. Enjoy!

If you are interested in more of the story, you can google and see the cool
cleats he got to send a message after his bike was recovered, and you can see
him as the Pittsburgh Penguins' guest as they play a song addressing his bike
recovery.

[RBW] An Autumn Ride, With a Serendipitous Visit to an Outdoor Art Show

2017-10-29 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
My weekend started early, on Friday, with a great ride over the carriage
roads in Minnewaska State Park, outside of New Paltz and part of the
Shawagunks. No camera, but my friend took a shot, looking out toward the
Mohonk House. This would have been the perfect ride for Clementine, but I
have yet to replace the damaged rear rim. This week!

Yesterday I did one of the endless variations of the dirt road riding just
south of Beacon, again on my Homer wannabe. The foliage was not as
blazingly colorful as some other years, but it was a perfect day. Lots of
stone walls, small glacial ponds, and woodsy solitude, along with fantastic
hard pack dirt roads. I passed a ring of log seats where on my last ride, a
group of kid campers was gathered. Now the stumps sat quietly in the leaves
waiting for winter.

Tech notes: After a rear axle break a few weeks back, I put on some wheels
I swapped for at the local shop and decided to try these Soma Supple
Vitesse 700x42 I had around, and they work well, though I think I was
running them with too much air. The Barlow EL are a bit more responsive in
terms of handling, which could be due to any number of factors. But I think
I will put them back on, along with a set of stainless fenders.

I happened to pass an outdoor art exhibit that has been held every year for
many years. I had never been. It was the last weekend of the show. Here
are some roughly edited shots of the ride and the show. *

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well fancy this. I did a dirt road ride yesterday and lost my car key. I
rarely drive to a ride, and this was only a few miles, but a very bad
stretch of road and no other way, so I treated myself. Also took my new to
me camera for a few fall foliage shots. While packing up my Baggins, I
thought, hmmm, let me put the key in a super safe place. So I zipped them
into a very shallow pocket on top of the camera bagAt the first photo
stop, I mistakenly unzipped the pocket with the key and never zipped it
backended up riding the bad stretch of road back home, had to break
into my apartment. A good friend took me on a car ride this a.m. to
backtrack, but no luck. Heading to Subaru dealer tomorrow morning. The good
news is I got a few nice shots, and I'll post a link to those in a new
thread.

broadcasting to all of facebook. Might be worth a try as well.

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-29 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Nope. Pure Ivan. This was written in the 1970s. Now as we face more and
more the consequences of "non-convivial" tool use (Illich includes whole
institutions such as health care, transportation, education, under tools)
his writing is taking on an air of prescience. He may not be the most
poetic communicator, but I find his writing fairly accessible. A very
BOBish take on our modern civilization IMO.

Restricting Rivish bikes to those made in the 80s is weird. 1960s and 70s
racing and touring/recreational bicycles probably have as much or more in
common with today's Rivs (by the late eighties lots of bicycles were high
and tight, and many were aluminum). My 1975 Takara Model 8

has room for 42mm tires and 45cm chainstays, and comes with fancy lugs and
an intricate head badge with inset jewel. My 1960s racing bicycle, a
Louison Bobet with 531 frame and Nervex lugs has similar specs, fitting
tires comfortably up to 35mm.

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-29 Thread Tully Lanter
Not (yet) a Riv owner so take this with an extra-large grain of salt. What
put RBW on my radar--and keeps numerous brands off--is that the bikes all
seem to:

   - Favor versatility over specialization
   - Maintain a healthy skepticism toward technical changes with cost
and/or complexity that overwhelms any practical benefits
   - Let form follow function, but keep function practical (e.g., city and
trail riding, not triathlons or cliff-hucking), and then "pretty it up"
enough to enjoy looking at it.

I started modifying previous bikes with those priorities in mind. It got me
wondering if someone more experienced hadn't already done the same, but
more thoroughly. Turns out yes.

[RBW] WTB: 52cm Clem, complete or frameset

I am in the market for a 52cm Clem! Preferably a complete bike, but a

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread TampaTech
I had my cell phone pop out of the holder I'd secured in my basket. I was
crossing a very busy road with three lanes of traffic in each direction so
I scampered across the street without my phone and watched 50 cars or so
miss it before a truck came along and squished it like a bug.

I found a strange looking case on the side of a road once. The device
inside turned out to be a muzzle velocity meter for a paint ball gun. I
found a large set of keys in an area where semi trucks unload so I turned
it in to the guard shack. I also found a fairly large combination wrench
but it was made in China and I didn't feel like carrying it for the rest of
my journey.

I have also wondered what sort of things others have found. It's good to
have a basket or a bag just in case you find a treasure.

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-29 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Tim,
I respond also having no first hand experience with them (aside from a mini diy
corner frame bag from a military surplus gas mask bag) but my understanding is
that going rackless not only saves weight but putting the heaviest items
inside the main triangle won’t affect the handling as much and as you already
mentioned the width issue keeping everything tucked into the frame space makes
snagging gear on the trail less of an issue when off road on more technical
routes. Just my observation having wondered the same thing myself.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for winter weather head gear?

2017-10-29 Thread Michael Morrissey
Giro ski helmet is the best for winter commuting. It looks cool, is
comfortable, and is a lot better than trying to wear a beanie or some sort of
hat underneath a regular vented bicycle helmet designed to cool your head.

The newer Giro helmets have easy opening vents. I typically ride for 10 mins
with them closed, warm up, then open them up.

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-29 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
This is from the uninitiated. I've only seen them in photos, so no experience
at all. The question: Why? It seems like they couldn't hold much (compared to
saddle bags or panniers) without being stuffed to the point where they would
interfere with pedaling.

The upsides I see would be that they don't increase the width of the bike like
panniers do, and maybe the weight would not affect handling as much as a
saddlebag.

Just curious.

the cycling world, but it began based in low BB, long chain stay, neutral
handling designs, with a lean to comfortably high handle bars, leather saddles,
wider tires (limited by brakes available at the time) and lugged joints. Always
steel tubes. Additionally, there have always been artistic touches to make the
bikes stand out (head badges and badge designs included), and build kits that
are sensible, work reliably and are not stratospheric in cost. Some models are
now mostly tig welded to hold down cost but they still ride like a Riv.

Other bikes can be made Rivish, and some competitors (Velo Orange comes to
mind) have intentionally tried to do so. I rebuilt an old Japanese made Nashbar
MK III in Rivish style and it is a great bike for another example. I personally
like the older RBW offerings myself, but would not hesitate to order a custom
if finances and need dictated. As it is, the 2 Rivs I already have along with
that Nashbar make a super troika of pedal partners for me.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for winter weather head gear?

2017-10-29 Thread Fullylugged
Like Tim, Merino works for me. I wear wool caps down to about 30F, and ski caps
below that. Thicker wool socks in roomier shoes or sandals, and layered wool
clothes. The early RBW wool caps are prone to running dye when you sweat, and
the later ones have thick seams that hurt under a helmet. Walz, Hernandez,
Pace, Randi Jo and others make nice, useable ones. Layers by Kucharik, Swobo,
Ibex, Icebreaker, Wooly Warm are all good. I wear wool jerseys and tights over
it all. I buy used stuff a lot to keep costs down.

Re: [RBW] Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread Steve Palincsar
Something similar happened to me commuting home from work in the early
1980s.  I was commuting on a Raleigh DL-1 roadster then, with my wallet
in a Carradice-clone seat bag.  I'd failed to secure one of the straps,
and when I got home I discovered my wallet was missing.

I backtracked my route from home into the District of Columbia, but
found nothing.  Rode back home disconsolate and worried about all the
hassle of getting new IDs, etc., to learn when I did get home that a
fellow commuter had found my wallet only minutes after I'd dropped it
and since he was passing through my neighborhood on his way home, had
stopped at my house and dropped the wallet off.

I have found many items on the paths around here: lights, jackets, keys, etc.
If they are bright items and off to the side, I just leave them. If they are in
the path, I pick them up and put them at the nearest entrance, fence post or

Once on the road I found a wallet. I could tell it hadn’t been there long.
Opened it up, lots of cash, cards, drivers liscence and business card matching
name on liscence. I called the guy up and said I had his wallet. He didn’t
think so, thought I was scamming him or something. Eventually he came around,
realized it was possible and grew incredibly thankful.

Oh, and on the road over the years, I have found many a tool that has fallen
off the back of trucks. Those I pick up and keep!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for winter weather head gear?

2017-10-29 Thread ascpgh
Lots of iterations of wool caps that cover the ears to a balaclava that
tucks into my base layer top (haven't tried PJWs top w/ hood) but I always
add a helmet cover. when it gets cooler.

40°F and rain this morning, will be using all the tricks. This is always
the worst weather for a commute. Colder with wet snow is better than rain
between 33° and 45°.
