[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Well, it's done. I hated to give up the hope on the Islabike but the site now
says, "SOLD OUT - there won't be any available", and customer service offered
me zero hope. Such a bummer. I ordered the Woom 6 in sky blue with the
kickstand for just a little more than the discounted Islabike. I debated going
with a small adult bike, but light weight is really important here. My son is a
7th grader but he is so slim; he only weighs 70 pounds.

The developing crisis is going to be when I sell my younger son's Islabike
Beinn 20 and hand him the old Specialized. It is noticeably heavier and he is
going to resent that after his dreamy Islabike ride. He is 10 and only 55
pounds. Oh, how I wish I had ordered Islabikes last night and not waited until
today.

[RBW] Re: Bike Shop Radio: A podcast by 718 Cyclery

2018-10-03 Thread REC (Roberta)
Hi, Leah!

Thanks for the information. I'm in the car a lot and downloaded and listed
to episodes 1-4 all in the same day!

For anyone who is interested in listening, I found the first part of
episode 3--how Joe got into the business and how architecture relates to
bikes (he is a registered architect)-- interesting. I also loved episode 4
(and feared for the future of LBS everywhere), where he published the
keynote from Interbike.

The most "fun-ist" thing for me after listening to these podcasts, though,
is that I'll be in Brooklyn in about a month and I'm now planning on
stopping by to visit, assuming NY traffic doesn't cause me to be late to my
original appointment.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell All Rounder ridden less than 10 times!

2018-10-03 Thread Joe Bernard
It was custom in the sense that you had to order your size and wait, kinda like
the current Waterford frames. You're right about choosing paint, which was a
great benefit. The spec sheet someone posted in this thread shows that you
could order a non-stock size for a $300 upcharge; I think the one you're
selling is the stock 53cm A/R.

Which is a great bike, I'm just commenting on how all this worked back in the
day as I recall it.

I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet, but maybe people are struggling with buying
another bike right now same as I am. Somebody buy this before I do!

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
We just went through this with my 12 year old, who was maxed out riding his
24" bike. I looked around at newer bikes and couldn't find anything we
wanted in our price range, though I might have reconsidered if I'd seen the
info from this thread. In the end we took a similar route with him that I
have for me in the past: a late 80s to mid-90s mountain bike. They are
ubiquitous, and therefore cheap enough that I can afford to spend money to
modify them, and they typically have all the attachment points we might
want. He's only going to fit this bike for a few years, so this is a good
time to experiment and find out what he likes. We ended up with a +/- 1990
Specialized Hardrock. I'm replacing what is likely the original chain,
cables, and brake pads, and adding a stem mounted cable hanger for the
front brake, and then swap out for whatever handlebars he wants. It'll fit
fenders, and it's tall enough for a saddle bag if he wants it. Other
models had attachments for front racks, but he was less interested
specifically in that.

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b narrow tires

2018-10-03 Thread G.E.
So, yes, it's a small road bike that happens to have 650b wheels. I have
had 650c wheels as well on another bike... and there aren't a ton of
options there either. It's almost the opposite problem though. One can find
narrower 650c tires, but finding wider ones becomes more of a challenge. My
initial question was really more out of curiosity... an "if I should ever"
type of wondering. The 32mm ones work fine, but I know when I'd looked it
was about the narrowest available, so was curious if anyone had tried
something narrower on a 650b wheelset.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-10-03 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
This is great, Philip! Way to rule the internets!

I came to Rivendell via B'Stone and iBOB, but from the dirty side. It
started with my MB-2 purchased from Beverly Hills Bikes that was my go-to
ride for many years. So my tastes were formed in the Proto era, but my
finances didn't catch up till the Golden era when I was able to commission
a Joe/Joe custom in 2001. I also had an original Bleriot (shoulda' kept
that one), a second (used) '01 Joe/Joe custom, and have had three different
Quickbeams. My wife had a Glorius, and I would still like to find a larger
one for me! My tastes lean toward single top tubes and shorter stays, and
would love to have a Legolas.

But enough about me...

Re: [RBW] Billie bar / choco bar

Choco is probably - between those two, I've never used a Billie - the better
flipped bar. Less rise becomes less drop, with a more natural grip position in
the curves than Alba. By an infinitesimal amount, mind you, but the details
matter when choosing a bar.

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
We went with a Fairdale Weekender Archer when my son hit 5' 1" or so -- the
Adult small size was designed around 27.5 (650b) wheels and with it's
sloping top tube was a perfect "grow into" size. We never did install racks
or fenders but there were plenty of attachment points on the fork and seat
stays as well as both drop outs. Of course, he grew 4" that year and
another 3" the next and already it's too small(ish). He's also going on 14
and pretty much only riding in the summer anymore ... sigh. I'm betting I
can switch out the stem and maybe do a bar swap of some sort and he'll eek
out another summer on it but then he'll likely have outgrown my bikes
as well since he's already at least 1/2" taller than me!

Re: [RBW] OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Woom is lightweight-- more important for children bikes to-be light.
Brakes have a nice light feel, easy to squeeze and stop the bike.
Grip shifter works well.

Otherwise, it's a nice bike. Bummer was having to get rack and fenders from
Islabikes! With a larger size (e.g., Woom 6), one could probably use
adult-size bike accessories (e.g., fenders for 26" wheels, rear bike rack).
I wasn't sure about those fitting on Woom5, which is 24" wheels, so I went
with Islabikes accessories for 24"-wheel bike.

The quality difference between Isla and Woom is not noticeable unless you
have them next to each other. For me, I see slight difference in paint,
weld beads. I think most parts, e.g., crank/shifters/brakes, are
similar/same. One difference: assembly of Islabikes was with appropriate
grease... but the Woom I took off some parts and greased them.

I have no problem recommending Woom. It's still more expensive than many
children's bikes. For 26" wheel bikes, people ~5' or so, I would consider
looking at adult-size small bikes. (I know some shorter adults have been
recommended to look at Islabikes...)

Good luck!

Thanks Joe,

That was my thinking too. Looks like the Billie is in between in terms of rise.
Billie is also wider... because the handles go back further?

Good to know that functionally they are familiar. That is what i was hoping to

I've used Albas (a bunch of them, steel and alu) and one Choco-Norm. IMO either

the other was on your bike. Therefore if you like Albas but want less rise and

Hi BBDD,
Woom has islets for rack and/or fenders. The Woom6 is for 55" - 65".
https://us.woombikes.com/products/6

Woom used to sell a "commuter"-style bike with racks+fenders, but sadly
discontinued it. I think it's a USA market thing-- they can't sell them.
(Looks like Woom still offers racks+fenders in EU, maybe other markets.)

This past spring, I bought my 8-yo the Woom5, and purchased fenders+rack
from Islabikes. (Woom is a nice bike, and much nicer than most children's
bikes. Islabikes is higher quality, IMHO, but I couldn't justify the $100+
difference.)

Good luck!

Och, well. Worth a shot. He’s well ahead of where I was then. No need to push
things over a top tube. Grin. Your shop should be able to mount racks on Cleary
Bikes via P-clamps by being a bit creative. Folks here do on Rivs et al without
brazons by that method. Call them and talk with them at Cleary. They were great
to work with. I’m unaware of those other options. They didn’t exist when we
bought for four, and we’ve been able to spread things out well, so haven’t
needed more of the same size till their adult bikes.

With abandon,

Oh Patrick, therein lies the crux. The cool factor for the teen boy. He has
been pretty darn accommodating to all his mother’s whims and staunch beliefs.
He eats homemade lunch every single day with weird things like fermented
pickles and homemade sourdough, and organic everything. He’ll take the
probiotics, drink the bone broth, be the only kid in school who bikes with his
mother and brother, won’t cuss, loves good, hates evil, wears a matching

appears to be from bygone times? Oh, no. He would love the Clem L but it would
offend the aesthetic sensibilities of the jerks that are his peers. I’ve
dreamed of him riding my husband’s Clem H but that top tube is just too high
for my 4’ 11” kid.

The Cleary bikes don’t take racks, do they?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
Interesting Bruce! That's not what I would have expected. Were the Nord and
the Ram built up and fit similarly?

Curious about the brakes in particular. I originally had my Nord set up
some dual pivot calipers, which I did not like. Power was fair, but
modulation poor. They made me uncomfortable on dirt. I worried I would
jiggle my grip over a bump and lock a wheel. I replaced them with a pair of
Paul Racer M brakes driven by Gevenalle (Tektro) levers, and it is now the
best braking bike I own.

I haven't heard of TIG vs lugs effecting frame flexibility or ride quality
before, but it'd be curious to learn more. Any engineers out there who
would care to comment?

Have fun at the Southern Magnolia Century! That sounds like a lovely place
for a ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey Rod, my subjective experience is similar to yours. My A. Homer Hilsen
has a different feel than my Nordavinden, which in turn feels different
than my MAP. I have subjective thoughts on which of them "feel" fastest,
but none of them hold me back significantly in my non-competitive
randonneuring.

I personally believe that bike fit is by far the most important factor.
After that, running high supple tires seems to make the second biggest
difference. Once I've optimized those two things, having a frame that
flexes in a way that works for me comes third. Weight, within a couple
pounds, comes a distance fourth for me when it comes to optimal performance.

Which is to say, I recommend getting your tires and fit dialed in as
perfectly as possible before you even begin to worry about frame flex or
weight!

[RBW] Billie bar / choco bar

2018-10-03 Thread J L
Hello rivsters,

I have been looking for a new upright bar. I love love love albatross bars with
the handles angled down about 10° - that is the end of the bars point toward
the rear hub.

What are peoples experience with the billie and choco bars? They look similar
to albatross but with less rise. I want to try one of them set up almost like a
flat bar with swept back handles. I am looking for a slightly more swept back
Jitensha bar (nitto b2522). I plan to cut the bar ends to the length I want.

Thoughts? Other options.

Thanks
Jason

Hi,
Thank you Kevin for the background. That helps explain the
peculiarities of the Waterford built well-used All Rounder I bought from
Mt. Airy Bicyles about 4 years ago. It has a thinner seatpost, for
example. It had a few dents; a little rust, and I had to change post and
stem to get it to fit. It must be about the same size as yours. I really
like it. I paid $2,000. Hope you get a good buyer.

2018-10-03 Thread Garth

Around here in this little corner of O-Hi-O there are few cyclists. I once
saw another cyclist about a month I go, thought I do see banana peels on
the side of the road more often, maybe once every 2-3 weeks. I guess
tossing the peel into the grass must just be too laborious for the poor
soul hah ! The "bike store" in town is Wally World(that's Wal-Mart
for the unimaginable). Always stocked with fresh bikes ready to roll off
the shiny "showroom floor" kinda literally !

I did meet one cyclists a few years back, a lawyerly fella who knew what
a Rivendell Bombadill sorta was at least, but apparently it was unworthy
compared to the plas-tique space ship he was riding Va va varm
and away he went into the statosphere faster than light . onto the
wings of angels I suppose ..or so the promise goes . ahahahahahaa !

Someone did compliment the ol' warhorse once though "Hey ... you
ride that old thing everywhere " . Yes I do ... I certainly do !

I just got a Pedal Bikes Shoot Film stem mount camera bag from Rivelo/Randi Jo.
It’s an excellent size with decent padding, waterproof fabric, and a rolltop

Shoot! Sorry to hear that Marc, I'll spread the word

I had a chance to prove most of the route the other day. I also stumbled
across a convenience store and a sandwich/ice cream shop about 4 miles from
the cabins. Since it's directly on our route down I figure we can grab
dinner to go and maybe some breakfast supplies there.

Day two we have a couple food stops in the loop and I figure we can make a
trip up to the store for a dinner re-supply Sunday night.

The routes may vary a little bit but here's the three days of routes for
simplicity I used google maps:

Note day two has some rather short & steep elevation changes, granny gears
welcome (I'll probably walk a few). Rewards include some pretty fun/long
downhills and some killer panoramas of the lake.

Also, I'm thinking of bringing a fishing rodI've been to this little

Just a thought...if anyone wants to join for part of the trip you are
welcome to do thatespecially so since Marc has a cabin up for graps.

Cheers,

Alex

[RBW] OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-03 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Well, Islabikes announced yesterday afternoon they are shutting the doors to
the US office in Portland. The bikes and gear are all discounted and I was so
excited to get my hands on the Beinn 27 for my 7th grader. Alas, they are SOLD
OUT. As of now, the UK headquarters does not and will not ship to US. There are
3 companies Islabikes recommended: Woom, Cleary and Prevelo. None have a nice
commuter option like Islabikes did. I'm so, so disappointed.

Do any of you have a recommendation for a bike to fit a 12.5 year old? I see
that the major bike companies offer only adult sizes at this point. I want
something that will take a rack so we can do our school commute. He currently
rides a Specialized Hot Rock 24 incher that he's had since FIRST GRADE. It's
been a wonderful bike. My younger son rides a little Islabike and needs to size
up, so that Specialized is going to be his. Thanks in advance for your help -
and if you need a great kid bike at a discount, maybe Islabikes will still have
the size you need.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell All Rounder ridden less than 10 times!

2018-10-03 Thread kevin spicher
To those that are interested, please keep in mind this is a Waterford
Rivendell, and if memory serves me correctly, they were all custom. In
1997/1998 you could not drive over to Riv and pick up a frame. They were
built to your size, specs, color, lug paint details, etc. You put down a
deposit and waited while it was hand built and hand painted. When it
arrived at Riv they built it up with the parts you chose from their
catalog. This was our process. I was sized at Riv by Grant, I believe my
wife was as well.

There have been a lot of questions about size, and I realize this is very
important, but top tube length and standover height should be enough detail
to determine if this bike will fit. A lot of adjustments can be made with
saddle height, stem length, stem height, crank length etc.

If you are interested, please make an offer, I will take the post down on
Fri.
Thanks

Hi Reed:

I test rode a Norvindian owned by a fellow cyclist in Mobile. I found it much
less lively than my Ram. She loves it however. Maybe lugs vs welds? The Ram
is fine on gravel with fat tires. I did a gravel grind on Pasela 1 1/2” and
ride was okay. I was leery of the brakes on steep loose down hills and canti
or disc would be my suggestion for gravel. On packed clay the bike as is is
fine.
Have a super ride. Mine will be in Saucier MS this weekend for the Southern
Magnolia Century. A cousin of my wife from LA is meeting me to ride the New
Albion Starling I built for her. There’s a riv ish brand at a lower price
point too. Very good ride.

Many years ago, I did a MS ride on Martha’s Vinyard on my then new All’rounder.

The entire field of riders were on mid to upper level aluminum or carbon Treks,
Specializeds, etc. (This was ‘04 or so right in the middle of the Lance

That put a smile on my face for the rest of the ride.

Reed,

I'll raise you a few pounds. At 227, I'm very happy with the lively handling of
my 58 cm Nordavinden. I'm also delighted with my two Surly LHT variants (700c

them, of course, but can ride any of them fast and far, over a gamut of
surfaces. I'm running Compass or Grand Bois ELs on all of them, and that has no
doubt improved the ride experience in all cases.

Food for thought: I weigh 201 pounds and my 61 cm Rawland Nordavinden works
extremely well for me. That frame uses a standard diameter 7/4/7 top tube
and standard diameter 8/5/8 downtube:
http://rawlandcycles.blogspot.com/2012/07/nordavinden-geometry-and-specifications.html

Taking in to account the narrower diameter tubing, this frame is
significantly more flexible than an 8/5/8 oversized frame. Leaves me
wondering: Am I special? Or do folks tend to over-estimate the tubing
needed by larger riders?

I’ll be riding it on the New England Randonneurs Fall Classic 120k this
Saturday. Curious to see how it holds up on an 85% dirt route!
