[RBW] Re: Ultra Romance and his Rivendell Atlantis.

2019-01-08 Thread Collin A
Looks swanky, though personal preference for me is flat bars with cushy
grips when it comes to rough off-roading; having my hands in the hoods
while i'm getting bounced around at any noticeable speed just isn't
comfortable for me and my thumb wedges.

The idea of just riding your bike with what works and not always looking at
what the trends are or what the "best" bike/gear/tech for a situation seems
very Riv.

Happy riding everyone,
Collin

2019-01-08 Thread Steven Sweedler
I met Bene in northern New Mexico in what was the low point of my Great
Divide ride in 2016. We stopped to talk and he assured me I was near the
end of what seemed like an endless climb. The day before I was caught in a
downpour that turned the trail into a slippery mud hole, my bike had pounds
of dried mud stuck to it. Nothing but positive feelings about my encounter.

To be clear: I think he’s a good advocate. He’s been amazing at being
supportive of lots of capital G good causes and businesses. That is awesome.
You can be an advocate for bikes no matter what your identity is. And you
can/should be an ally then as well! It takes a little more care to do it in a
way that isn’t othering and it’s been really great to see Bene (as well as
Crust, the Radavist, a multitude of other fellow white dudes on bikes) grow
into handling the issues of inclusion, representation and challenging the
status quo.

Two thumbs up for Bene. 

[RBW] Re: Nitto Noodle vs. Dirt Drop vs. B135 Randonneur - switching to drop bars with flare

2019-01-08 Thread John Hawrylak
you stated wrt to B132's "The B132 has a shallower drop but a longer
reach, otherwise similar but different sizes available."
True but the B132's have a very shallow ramp angle, about 5° vs the 12° on
the B177 and more on the B135. However the B132 ramp is flat and does not
curve upward like the Compass AVA copy does. I have B132's on my 88
Voyaguer and have measured the ramp angle on the bench. The long ramps
(due to 132mm reach C-E) allow a hand position behind the hoods.

The Nitto catalog gives a good picture/drawings of the B132 and B135 for
reference. The B132 rise is greater (12mm vs 7mm on the B135) and the
flare is less.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Noodle vs. Dirt Drop vs. B135 Randonneur - switching to drop bars with flare

2019-01-08 Thread Paul G
Nice bit of information.

Regarding the Noodles though, at least on my 44cm version, instead of a
slight "rise" from the stem clamp area to the ramps, there is a slight
"drop" in that the tops slope downwards slightly (as well as a bit rearward
as we know) before curving to the front and becoming the ramps. This is
when the bars are set up with the ramps roughly horizontal to the ground.

I find that bit of slope down from the stem clamp quite natural and
ergonomic when riding on the tops. That said, I switched to a Compass Maes
Parallel and find it a bit more supportive than the Noodle when riding on
the ramps. But the Noodle had the better tops.

I may have to upgrade (more likely add another) at some point. I like big

skimmed down feels stable and smooth. The Appaloosa almost feels like you
are on water. It turns and handles great but in a very smooth way that is
unique. I almost sold the Appaloosa until I switched it back to 42s. Now
 it
rides more like the Sam I sold. If I bought a Sam again (would love an old

Hey Kurt,

Seems like you have a lot of replies already and I'm late on this, but I do
have a 2016 58cm Hunq. I have Velocity Atlas rims and I run 55mm big bens
and 2.1 Smart Sams, both have healthy clearance for SKS commuter fenders.

I know that's not as big as you wanna go, especially with cliffhanger rims.
But I dunno if I'd go too much more than that with fenders, honestly, even
with Atlas.

Hope that helps

[RBW] Re: Four framesets for sale, so I can buy one.

2019-01-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
Mark S Hall asked two kind of cryptic questions:

"what size tire is fendered on your Roadini?"

I think this maybe should be translated to: What size tires are pictured
on your fendered Roadini? Assuming that is the question, then they are
Soma New Express 700x28 on the label. They measure an actual 27mm on very
skinny rims

"And fenders are shown?"

I think this means: What make and model of fenders is shown in the
picture? Assuming that is the question, they are Velo Orange 700x35
hammered in "noir".

Let me know if these were not your questions.

[RBW] Big Clem Ls anyone thinking of selling?

2019-01-08 Thread Jim Bronson
Anyone thinking of parting with their 64/65 Clem L?

My dad is having a hip replacement and needs a bike for rehab afterwards
per his doctor. He's tall like me, so I can't think of any other bike on
the market that would work for him better than a Clem L. He looked at some
of my bikes but commented that the top tubes were too high for him to swing
a leg over. He's 6'5" and shinking somewhat, PBH unknown.

Would be happy to buy a new one, I'm sure, but understandably Riv only did
1 batch of big Ls, and I think something like 10 big Rosco Bubbes in an L
style.

I looked at the Cheviot presale, but I'm not sure a 60cm Cheviot is going
to be big enough for him, and I hate to recommend something that's
suboptimal if he's going to be dropping $2.5K into it. He's not a cycling
nut like me or even my sister (who's kind of a runner first, cyclist 2nd),
so talking him into $1400 frame only might be too big of a stretch anyway.

>From past threads I realize that most of the big guys who got big Clem Ls
on this list were really happy with them, but I guess it never hurts to ask.

Alternately, is there anyone in the Austin, Texas area with a 60cm Cheviot
that we could compare against my dad's comfort level?

Hope everyone's having a great day.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-08 Thread RichS
Randall:

I currently have a 650b sage colored Sam and a 26” wheeled MUSA Atlantis (46cm
chain stays). Absolutely love them both. The Sam is presently set up as a more
roadish ride with drop bars, a small handlebar bag and a saddlebag. It has also
been set up with a basket/large bag combo which allowed me to carry a sizeable
groceries front and rear. Handled just fine.

The Atlantis has a basket and a saddlebag so it does grocery and commuting
duty. Handlebars are Albatross. I have run drops on it but my preference is for
the Alba’s.

As others have said, there is overlap between the two models and you could
certainly tour with the Sam. There are differences in the way they feel. Sam
has a lighter feel at the front. Keep in mind too, the Sam’s geometry is a bit
more slack.

The Atlantis on the other hand feels more “planted”, if I can use that term.
The feel is stable, balanced and well, just plain neutral. These
characteristics could be attributed to wheel size, geometry (not as slack as a
Sam) and tubing. Probably just want you want if you’re looking for a more rough
stuff ride. It feels pretty darn good that way on a smooth surface.

The tubing question has come up before; if my memory is correct, the Atlantis
tubing is 0.9 straight gauge.

Hope my observations are helpful. For sure, everyone else’s comments are spot
on.

Regards,
Rich in ATL

Bene has been a Riv rider for a long time and is what the kids call an
Influencer. I have lots of issues with straight white shirtless guys on bikes
but UltraBromance has done a lot of good for the cause of practical bikes with
fat tires and mismatched drivetrains. He’s also not orthodox so he’ll use disc
brakes and clicky shifting. I’m glad that most of ironic co-opting of queer
culture has vanished and now he just rides cool bikes and sells well-thought
out goods.

Ignore the marketing and focus on the wares.

The new Hunqapillar is sort of an anomaly. It was always RBW's true
expedition or off-road bike but the new versions actually have short
chainstays, compared to other new Riv models. I believe the 56 cm Hunq has
chainstays that are only 49 cm. I also believe that the Gus Boots-Willsen
is somewhat a stand-in for the Hunqapillar and it appears to have very long
chainstays. It would be interesting to hear RBW's thinking on where the
new Hunqapillar fits and why they kept the chainstays on the shorter side.
It would also be interesting to hear why it's currently on hiatus. Maybe
they plan an MIT version? That would be spectacular.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-08 Thread Mark Schneider
I am under the impression that the Atlantis is slightly heavier, with
thicker tubing, and room for wider tires. I have a MUSA Atlantis and a MUSA
Homer, and the difference in ride is quite noticeable. Kevin explained to
me a long time ago that the Hillborne was in between the Homer and
Atlantis, so they might be very close. If you are planning on staying on
pavement the vast majority of the time I'd think the Hillborne would be
fine. But, the long chainstays on the new Atlantis are perfect for panniers
and it's stouter tubing might end up being faster with weight than an
overloaded lighter frame. Either way, you have permission to buy a new
Atlantis, I'm sure you'll love it.

Hmmm... Ultra-romance is called a 'Rivendell sponsored rider and mobile

in exchange for promoting Rivendell? No negativism intended, as it sounds

Bob,

If you don't plan to mount a rack but would like have a 50mm rack-style
dyno tail light, I have an adjustable design for a light bracket that
mounts to the rack bosses. You can configure the model to fit your bike,
download it, and send the model to be 3d printed:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3091821 and
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3093032

One has the bracket arms parallel to the face of the light. The other has
arms at 45 degrees to more efficiently bridge over cantilever and
centerpull brake cables.

I have my own 3d printer so can also assist in getting these into the hands
of anyone that wants one. Just email me off-list.

[RBW] Nitto Noodle vs. Dirt Drop vs. B135 Randonneur - switching to drop bars with flare

2019-01-08 Thread Pancake
I'm replacing the Bosco bars on a new-to-me Sam Hillborne 56cm. I currently
ride another bike with Randonneur B135 bars in 45cm but they're too narrow.
In figuring which bars to use on the Sam I needed some information that
took a while to collect - I figured to include it here because it's
interesting and may save someone a load of trouble and time in the future.

Comparing the wider Nitto touring drop bars:

*Noodle B177* - the Riv standard for drop bars, slight rise and "the top
flat portion sweeps back toward you slightly, bringing the bar closer, and
the drops (lower portion) flare out four degrees" and secret sauce is the
flat ramp up to the brake hoods.

Width: 48cm center bar end to center bar end (also in 41, 44, 46)
Drop: 140mm
Reach: 95mm
Flare: ~4 degrees
Clamp: 26mm

*Randonneur B135 - *also has slight rise and flat section sweep back, but
more flare out and not available as wide as others. The B132 has a
shallower drop but a longer reach, otherwise similar but different sizes
available.

Width: 45cm (also in 42) - Width at the drops is ~6cm less than the overall
width
Drop: 120mm
Reach: 105mm
Flare: ~7 degrees (6cm less than the width
Clamp: 25.4mm

*Dirt Drop RM-013* - very similar to the Noodle but with significantly more
flare out (~7 vs. ~4 degrees). Lack the upswept flat section though. Also
the similar RM-014 which has a narrower flat section and wider flare to
make up the width, different sizes (50 & 52cm), and bigger clamp at 31.8mm.
Similar flare as the B135. Middle ground between traditional touring drops
(noodle) and a wider mountain bike drop (like the Cowbell or Far bar)

Width: 52cm (also in 46, 48) - Width at the drops is ~6cm narrower than the
overall width
Drop: 140mm
Reach: 95mm
Flare: ~7 degrees
Clamp: 25.4 *or* 26mm

Mark's install / setup video for drop
bars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEUm3VzF_Z0

Details of my planned setup:

Bars: RM-013 52cm

Stem: Technomic 70mm

Brakes: TRP RRL SR Retro - gum color, drilled "speed" holes (Simpson's
reference )
Shifter: Microshift bar end BS-T09 (friction or index on rear, friction
front ... the BS-A09 is index on rear only)

Hope this saves someone else some time!

Mike: Thanks, but no need, at least on my account; I was just curious about
the actual width and whether my own guesstimates were correct -- I'd
guessed at 37 or so. It's just that so many tires are labeled "X" and
measure just "X-4 mm" like those Kojaks.

Patrick, I got 38.2, but I dont have calipers. I used a small square to cut
cardboard until it was contacting both sides of the tire then measured the
space. Not sure what that’s worth, but it’s the best I could improvise in the

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar fender options

2019-01-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Living in a desert (9" citywide average of precipitation a year, from 14"
in foothills to 5" on west mesa; I'm in the middle) I ride rarely in rain
(thank God) and snow (unfortunately -- I like riding in snow), but living
in the SW, our rains tend to come in downpours and collect on roads
designed without gutters -- many side streets, bike routes, are designed so
that the curbside itself is the gutter, and you ride in temporary
streambeds. Long windup to short point: Despite 9"/year, I've ridden on
many flooded roads.

In my experience since 1989 with all the major metal fenders -- at least 2X
each for Honjo, Berthoud, VO; and with multiple cases of all the plastics
(Bluemels to Zefals), I have found no fender at all that will prevent spray
when going through 1" or 2" of water at speed. This despite flaps 12"+ long
and 8" wide, and 1/2" above pavement. Rolled edges make no practical
difference, IME.

Speaking of motorcycles: You motorcycle riders: do you get wet feet and
shins in the rain?

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Protovelo - complete bike 57.5cm

2019-01-08 Thread jandrews
Hello
I've had some questions regarding the other measurements and geometry of
this frame.
This bike is looking very close to a 57cm Roadini geo from the charts
Here's some measurements taken with a tailors tape by me attempting to be
as precise and accurate as possible

   - The Top Tube is 57.5cm center to center with what appears to be
essentially a 59cm effective top tube
   - The Seat Tube is measuring 57.5cm center to center
   - The Down Tube is measuring 64.4cm center to center
   - The Head Tube is measuring 21.5cm
   - The Chain Stays are measuring 45.5cm center to center
   - The Seat Stays are measuring 38.5cm (*from the dropout center to the
   brake bridge*)

Not to complicate things further, but there's also the Appaloosa to

Def good for road and touring with the wider tire options of the Atlantis.
