[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-03 Thread Mike Packard
I think plastic (nylon?) pedals grip better without resorting to
scrapey/stabby pegs, especially when wet. I have a pair of Odyssey Twisted
pedals I got used 5 years ago and they still work great. They come in a
lots of colors and every bike shop has them for ~$20.

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread tc
Aaron, if you haven't already, you might try flipping your Albatross, and
possibly switching out your stem for something a tad longer. I found that
a flipped Albatross still allows a close-enough grip position (raise your
stem a little higher than when you run it in the normal position...or use a
dirt drop), but to your point, also offers the more aggressive position
when you move up into the curves to crank it. And the downward slanted
curves of a flipped Albatross are actually very comfortable ... more so
than when not flipped.

I cannot endorse the crust cargo fork more highly. It’s actually opened up
venues of riding and erranding that I didn’t fully realize bikes could do in a
convenient way. Also it rides exceptionally normal.
That said, by the time you install with a new wheel/tire/brakes/basket etc,
you’ll be wa over 250$

For good, cheap pedals, I like the OneUp composite pedals for around

[RBW] Blue Lug bars arrived today

2019-12-03 Thread ant ritchey
So I've been gravitating more and more towards flat bars. In a big way. I'm
also a bit of a Nitto junkie.

I've always been a fan of 48 Noodles & Albatross bars. I never had a bike
where a Bosco or Choco seemed appropriate. The "Jitensha" 2522AA bars are a
really cool design/concept but at a wide-shouldered 6' 5" there was just no
way they'd work for any kind of riding that I do. I really dug the Riv-spec
Bullmoose on several of my '83, '84, '65 Trek 800 series rebuilds.

I don't race. I don't own a car. I commute by bike. I also tour a lot and
most of the long days in the saddle are "fully loaded" and off-pavement.
I've now done multiple 7-14 day tours on the Sim Works Get Around bar. Zero
hand cramps or comfort issues. I'm absolutely in love with this handlebar.
I was really into the Ahearne Map 610's for awhile, but (to me) the Get
Around blew them out of the water.

There's a ti version of the Get Around that's both prohibitively priced and
out of stock. Sim Works just got the Get Around back in stock after a
looong hiatus but the price rose from $40ish to $60ish for the Cro-Mo bar,
which prompted me to look elsewhere in order to perhaps try out something
new for a similar price point.

So I put in an order with Blue Lug in order to try some of the Nitto
offerings less common in the States. The two I settled on were the For
Shred (which apparently is also available from VO) and the B802 HT (a
mysterious-to-me bar the I was and am very intrigued by), both in 25.4.

It's easy to find lots of pics of the For Shred bar, but the 802 is more
elusive. I intend to post some pics and reviews of these bars over the next
few weeks, schedule pending. Anyone riding these bars?

I admit I knew about it quite a while ago. I kept it a secret and told no one

Another data point: Dummy levers will clamp down tight enough on 22.2 bars.
Grant put them on the '93 XO-3 which used that size Moustache Handlebar.

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
Albatross bars are 22.2mm and take mountain bike controls. Moustache bars
were 23.8mm and took road bike controls. Albastache bars are 23.8mm like
Moustache. The dummy levers that were on Bridgestone XO bikes are still
around, but they are 23.8mm. My personal favorite dummy levers are the
cylindrical dia compe ones. Velo Orange used to sell them and the
replacement hoods for them.

IF you had 23.8mm bars, I'd recommend googling for "tandem dummy levers"
and pick ones you like.

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread Garth

I would think if you're gonna place some extentions there they ought to be as
large as your hand so you could really grip securely. Resting the elbows, even
with something to grab hold of, the bony forearms on top of the bars is still
unstable as to really be effective the forearms would literally need to "be the
bar", meaning securely on top of the bars by means of some sort
support/security. I have this image of the Movie Breaking Away where the guy
tapes his feet to the pedals, but in this case elbows to the bars, so they
don't fall off. hilarious !

Then again, there's always "just try it for the helluva it" ! That's why
we're here and there's no place like Home 

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread A. Douglas M.
Yeah that’s what I do, Garth (placing my forearms on the forward bend of
albas). The problem with this isn’t width for me but that it’s awkward to
control the bike with my forearms. Just a little something to grab onto would
give me control and subsequently more comfort. So I was thinking aero bars or
maybe those nubbins like Bridgestone used on their XOs.

The top tube is good for me on this bike (58cm) for me at 5’10”ish. I’m using
the steel hi rise Nitto quill stem that Riv sells to get the bars up over my
saddle height.

Thanks for your insight!

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread Garth

I've placed my forearms over my Alba bars a few times and it just feels
too odd from the width, so bar ends placed there would be mute. A real set
of aero extensions that are placed @ the middle of the bars feels a whole
lot more intuitive and natural, but I have no desire to do this on any of
my bikes. The only times I've ever felt the need for extensions was with my
ol' Stumpjumper that was wyy too short of top tube/front center. No
amount of extending could ever help that, as going further forward on too
short of bike only threw off the fore/aft balance within the frame. My
Bombadil is nice and long and the Alba bars offer lots of fore/aft room as
I have bar end brake levers so I can move my hands all the way to the
curves unfettered by clunky brake lever mounts.

[RBW] Re: Fancier Cheviot?

2019-12-03 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Let’s not open old wounds and bring up the lamentable Anniversary Mixte.  Man,
I took that one hard. I decided if I can’t have that AM, I’d like the newer
version of Cheviot and I’ll just get it painted
cranberryredwithsparklesandcream (that’s how it should be said). The Betty can
go, and I’ll sail off into the sunset on my Clem L and Fancy Chev.

No swoopy tube on the new Chev - I asked. Rumors are that the new Cheviot is
out late spring, but I’ve been assured by many folks that Rivendell’s timeline
often doesn’t follow what’s predicted. There are talks of longer wheelbase as
well. This makes sense to me since they lengthened their already-long-Clems.
Folks who had both Cheviots and Bettys said that the difference between the two
in ride was minuscule, if not undetectable.

I don’t know what makes the new Cheviot fancy. We started calling it that
somewhere along the line - who remembers why?

[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-03 Thread ctifusion
I'm glad you mentioned this. The VPs are bad pedals, mine started making
noise almost immediately. Can't have 500 miles on them and they're shot.
Especially given that I have 1000s of miles on multiple sets of Wellgo B132
pedals.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wellgo-B132-Downhill-DH-Mountain-Bike-Platform-MTB-Pedals-w-Replaceable-Pins/291309868321?epid=1224634799=item43d36bd521:g:iJMAAMXQ9u1RExHO

I've been using those RaceFace Chester pedals lately. They are so sturdy,
great platform, and I dig the composite look and all the colors.

[RBW] Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread A. Douglas M.
Has anyone had any luck putting aero extensions into albatross bars? I love my
upright position 80% of the time, but on long hauls I sometimes like to lean
into it and spin. Grips just forward of the bend would help immensely with
this.

Thanks!

Fancy Cheviot was mentioned to me when I asked about Leah's late, lamented,
apparently never to be Anniversary Mixte at RBW. I don't know any more about it
than "fancy", but it's definitely NOT the 25th swoopy-parallel-tubes step-thru
we've seen drawings (and a lug) of. It definitely IS happening.

2019-12-03 Thread Pancake
Based on a couple vague blahg references there's been fun speculation about
the "25th/26th Anniversary" frame but no one really knows. Does seem like
the Clem L < Cheviot < ___*?*___ lineup would be a little rich with
step-thru frames, but as one of the many MOMs (Men on Mixtes) I can get
behind / thru it!

I suspect it will be released as soon as Bicycle Belle Ding Ding perfects
the setup on her current ride ... then she'll have to buy another Riv. It
will of course be in her classy cherry red with cream accents.

[RBW] Re: Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-03 Thread M Talley
I second the Shimano platform pedal products. Specifically the
non-series PD-GR500. These like the Saint MX80 model have Shimano's
spindle/bearing cartridges with a pretty good track record. They are only
slightly thicker than most of the thin pedals on the market but worth it
for the durability.

[RBW] Re: WTB: rear wheel, 700c, 135mm wide, 9 speed compatible, rim brake, quick release

2019-12-03 Thread Pancake
A couple folks reached out but my temptation to try tubeless resulted in a
new wheelset from UniversalCycles:
Alex Adventurer 2

 rims
(21mm internal, 26mm external width)
Deore T610 hubs (all they have in stock, would prefer T670 / LX hubs or
T780 / XT hubs)
DT Swiss Competition spokes / nipples
Velocity VeloTape Tubeless conversion kit $23
*After some discounts and cashback madness it'll come out to about $255 for
a new wheelset that will be tubeless and fit my Snoqualmie Pass tires
nicely *from my Sam Hillborne.
... Sam's current rear wheel (Atlas rim, LX hub, DT butted spokes) swapped
to my Cheviot.
... Cheviot's rear wheel (Mavic A319, deore hub, straight spokes) will go
to my brother-in-law's bike.
... and I'll have a spare front wheel to sell and now that's posted to
craigslist.

Thanks for the offers and help folks! This bike is coming along, just
waiting on shipments of the crankset, rear wheel swap, and picking
handlebars in Oakland this weekend.

*Well, I guess I'm still looking for a shorter quill stem ... 5-8cm quill
stem to sell anyone?*

Photos to the list when it's finished.

2019-12-03 Thread James / Analog Cycles
I'm running 1x11 on a Kona Rove, with a 42 up front and a 11-50 in the
back. SRAM Rival brifter and rear mech. It's very close to the same gear
inch spread as a 44/24 with a 11-32. The clutch on the rear mech is great
for dirt roads.

There's some shots of it here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B5lh9LtF5qA/

Absolutely no reason it wouldn't work on a roadini. We've set up Sams and
Chev's with 1x drivetrains, always works fine.

customize screens. I import routes from RideWithGPS via their web
dashboard usually. TbT directions works well. Had some issues before they
added downloadable maps, but no problems since. No issues using with a
Wahoo Tickr heart rate monitor.

2019-12-03 Thread Bob Lovejoy
And a modern, artful and available
version... https://www.ahearnecycles.com/cycletruck

Not to say the rider's bike is not artful because it is. With a disc up
front, v-brakes in the rear, it makes me think there was some tinkering and
work going on. Oh, and I am assuming low trail(!), though planing would
probably be more of a problem than a feature.

Cool bikes!

2019-12-03 Thread George Schick
"...A career as a writer may kill that joyful writing she does with such
ease..."
Yes, indeed. Kinda reminds me of the story about George Gershwin who
supposedly asked for lessons from the likes of French composer Maurice
Ravel, who (somewhat afraid that learning to compose in that classical
style would ruin Gershwin's natural innovative talent in the more modern,
progressive style) was said to have remarked, "Why should you be a
second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?"

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-03 Thread Leah Peterson
Thanks, George, that’s kind. ❤️

No one was more disappointed in me than my high school English teacher when I
arrived at my university and checked the box “nursing major.”

I do enjoy writing, and maybe I should have found a way to get paid for it, but
nursing has been really rewarding, too. I’ve been there for a lot of people’s
worst days, held a lot of hands, and stopped a lot of bleeding. And laughed -
you can laugh with people in the most unlikely of circumstances. Nursing was
terribly satisfying, unbelievably difficult and, man, it was fun.

I don’t have any qualifications on paper for a writing job now, so I’ll just do
amateur work for free about the Clems in our lives. I plan to get a Cheviot
after the redesign, so I’m sure I’ll have a fair amount to say about that bike
in the near future, too. 
