[RBW] Schwalbe’s Big Apple is a 10-year old tire design. What’s a newer/better alternative?

2020-05-13 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I thought the stock Kendas (kwicknines?) were adequate tires, but the
discontinued Big Ones and those that followed are certainly better for most
things, but more fragile, the big ones especially so. The G-ones are super
duper tires, I use them tubeless and it's great, but with tubes I'd stick with
the big apples or similarly thickish tire.

Persistence, yes, that’s a nicer word than...nagging.

If the Nu-Cheviot is renamed Nag, I guess we’ll know who to blame.

I can’t wait for you and your SO to get the Nag Nu-Cheviot!

Lately, I've been working on some BMX bikes; BMX bikes are so different from a
"normal" bike. I personally think a hammer is not the appropriate tool for
working on a bike, but it's absolutely essential when working on a BMX bike!
LOL
And sometimes they require a lot of hammer; which feels unnatural, but also
oddly satisfying!

2020-05-13 Thread Robert Tilley
I'll need new tires for my 622 All Rounder soon and will likely go with one of the Rene Herse offerings. The Antelope Hill looks nice and everything I've heard about them has been good. My AR doesn't get a ton of miles so longevity of the tires isn't a huge concern for me.https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/tires/700c/700cx55-antelope-hill-tc/On their blog recently they talked about a new knobby that I may wait for.Robert TilleySan Diego, CA Sent from my BlackBerry - the most secure mobile device From: bobshar...@gmail.comSent: May 13, 2020 8:34 PMTo: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comReply-to: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comSubject: [RBW] Schwalbe’s Big Apple is a 10-year old tire design. What’s a newer/better alternative?

The above question requires clarification. I’ll frame
the issues in a long-winded way as they pertain to my situation (since, from my
point of view, it’s all about me). My second- or third-hand 59 Clem Smith Jr.
came to me with 50mm (50-622) Schwalbe Big Apple tires (Performance Line, RaceGuard,
LiteSkin). Now, after about 2500 of my miles and an unknown prior history, it’s
time for new tires.

I am not a sophisticated or particularly knowledgeable judge
of tires. I have no depth of experience. However, I like the Big Apple’s virtues: it offers a very comfortable ride, relatively low rolling resistance, longevity,
a good price/value relationship, and an admirable resistance to flats. What’s not
to like, right?

But... there's always a but. Schwalbe, with the Big Apple introduction a decade ago,
was a pioneer in the balloon tire movement. And while there have been improvements
and variations in the Big Apple line, one wonders what else has been developed
by Schwalbe and competitors to fill the same niche for comfort, easy rolling, longevity,
value, and flat resistance.

To further narrow the question, my riding conditions consist
mainly of rails-to-trails mileage, around town use on paved and gravel roads,
and very limited use on light-duty off-road bike trails. Although my Clem is rather a
heavyweight, even among Clems, with me on board we are still safely below its maximum
GVWR, if there is such a thing for bikes. My riding days range from 10-40 miles
with very occasional longer ventures. My riding is more relaxed than aggressive. Knobbies
and gravel tires don’t seem necessary. I want comfort, easy rolling, value,
durability and flat resistance. Finally, I have a generalized impression that
lighter tires will be more satisfactory than heavier, other things being equal.

To get to the point of this long story, I’m seeking
advice from those with more experience. I’m looking at widths from 50-55mm,
maybe up to 60mm although I have to
consider fender clearance. And this will be simply a choice of tires, not a tube
vs. tubeless choice – I’m staying with tubes, And, this is not a quest for new
tire and wheel combinations. Here’s what I’ve gleaned after spelunking among
the archives:

·
The Big Apple is still a fine choice, but it’s
no lightweight

·
The Schwalbe Big Ben seems to be more of
everything the Big Apple offers, including more weight

·
The Schwalbe Big One, in its several iterations,
seems more fragile, less durable and more costly – although its other features
are admirable

·
The Maxxis Torch 29x2.1 looks interesting, and
is a good bit wider – yet lighter – than Big Apples, but I haven’t seen many
reviews

·
The Kenda tires that come standard on the Clem
seem to be held in low regard

·
Many of the highly-touted and rather costly specialist
tires seem more fragile and/or less long-lived than the Big AppleThe question is, what tire make and model would you recommend for my combination of priorities and riding conditions? Or, should I just order another set of Big  Apples and call it a day? Thanks for any insights and the patience of the reader.LeRoy

[RBW] Dyno Light Mounting w/ junction box

2020-05-13 Thread RDS
I am going to try dyno light for the first time (front light only for
now). I am having a wheel built w/ a son wide body. I purchased a schmidt
edulux ii w/ a junction box (I might add a charger later on) and coax
connector. Bike is roadini w/ cantilever brakes .. once I get the wheel, I
will be attaching the light at the fork crown with the bracket shipped with
the light which should work for cantilever brakes. Anyone have any pics of
how/where you mount the junction box? The junction box is not that far
from the light, so I'm guessing the head tube if the wire is long enough
b/t the light and the junction box. any help/pics appreciated of how/where
your junction box is attached to the bike.

Yes, you can. I didn't figure out torque specs from some kid at the LBS telling
me, I read and watched stuff online. Taking it to the LBS doesn't teach you how
to do it yourself, and 50% of this forum is people teaching other people the
things they don't know about bikes.

Over the past few years I’ve wanted a Rivendell but have yet to take the leap.
I’ve owned many bikes over the years including a few Surlys.

So, I don’t feel like I’ve ever REALLY owned a Riv. I’m looking forward to
seeing and feeling what all of you have been saying about how they ride. If
anyone could compare an Atlantis and a Cheviot i would be interested.

2020-05-13 Thread Roberta
Doug,

Are you a Riv owner now? I don't remember. The Atlantis is awesome!!

3 years ago I spent more money on my Joe A. than all the money I've spent
on all the bikes, gear, and maintenance in my entire lifetime. Probably
by 2 or 3 fold.

The first Riv I rode was a MUSA Atlantis. I knew I was going to be a Riv
owner from that first pedal stroke! Then, a Chev and a Sam. 4 months
later, a Joe A (purchased) and 2 years after that, an AHH (purchased).
I'd been riding the same Specialized Hardrock for 30 years. My Rivs are
the best money I've spent on "goods" and worth every penny. Oh, the joy
they bring me. And, because of them, the 10 fold increase in mileage that
I'm smiling the whole ride. More exercise, more happy, more health. Even
more friends.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I have the best news!

First, I confess that since we knew there would be a Fancy Cheviot last year, I
have been sending emails to Rivendell. Prior to that, I had been checking in,
begging for the Anniversary Mixte to be made, but it was not to be. Grant said
that instead, there would be a “fancified Cheviot.” This Nu-Chev appears to be
what he meant, and it does resemble the sketch we saw on the Blahg.

Things went from bad to worse for the business over the next several months (we
know because we all read the blog posts) and it was looking like this model may
not even happen. I checked in from time to time about the bike but no promises
could be made. Best content yourself with your Clem, I told myself, possibly
have your mixte made using the custom option. These past 3 months I wrote a lot
of emails asking questions of poor Will and Vince because I knew their factory
time slot was approaching, and I wanted to get in line for a custom mixte with
Riv/Nobilette if Rivendell did not place their Cheviot order. No real time
estimate can be given until the purchase order is placed. Further complicating
things, the bike wasn’t quite ready - there were some design details to work
out. Until a purchase order is made, you can’t assume the bike is going to be
made...ever. The custom option was in my back pocket, but I really didn’t want
to spend the extra money - and also, Rivendell makes more money on a production
bike.

But today...May 13th is a great day, my friends. Will wrote to say that - this
morning - he placed his purchase order for the 2020 Fancy Cheviots!!! (I got
Will’s blessing to say this here.)

Let’s just let that sink
in

Ok, have we all composed ourselves? Are we wearing our clothes? No one has
soiled him/herself? Have we managed to remain upright? Ok, good, moving right
along... Will figures Nu-Chevs (his word) will be here late October/early
November. So, with luck, we’ll burn off our Thanksgiving turkey on the backs of
our Cheviots. If not that, they’ll be wrapped in bows under our Christmas
trees. But we’ll hope for November.

Now, here’s what I’m hoping. I’m hoping we clean them out of their Nu-Cheviot
stock. This is because 1. I feel like (true or not) I pressured them into
making the order and 2. Rivendell took a gamble placing a big bike order in the
current economic climate. They need to sell these bikes.

So, if you are a man who has been considering setting aside your objections to
mixte frames, you should order this Cheviot. If you are someone with stimulus
money burning a hole in your pocketses (I hope you get that reference), you
should order your very own shiny Nu-Cheviot. If you are one of my #RivSisters,
well, just look at this bike - It’s been made just for you. I don’t know what
it is exactly, but I’ve yet to hear a #RivSister say she has anything but heart
eyes for these Nu-Cheviots. Those split rear stays, those sexy swoops, those
voluminous 700c wheels - these bikes are different than any other Riv model
currently offered and this is a club I want to be in.

Save me a 55, I told Will. Does anyone else know for certain they’ll sign up
for the pre-order when it hits the website?

The future is bright and it looks like a mixte! 朗

Thanks for the heads-up Roberta. I bought a used one not long ago and it does

They are very well built, I've several of them.

The Medium Saddle bag, is the closest to a Banana Bag.

[RBW] Re: Admissions of Things You Ought to Have Known But Did Not: A Thread

2020-05-13 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
My admissions have more to with the growth of my bikes than mechanical lessons.
I consider myself a complete novice when I started my own maintenance and
repairs. With low or no expectations one can expect mistakes and simply learn
from them. Fortunately none of my maintenance has cost me financially really.
Now regarding hunting and finding jumbo Rivendells that fit my almost 100PBH
measurement I make mistakes all the time justifying the next addition due to
their rarity and long stretches of nothing coming up for sale.
Several times I have justified a purchase telling myself I would sell 1 or 2
off following the new purchase.
Now I realize my failure at following through with that behavior. The new plan
is to sell first before purchasing a new jewel when it presents itself.
I have a special credit union checking account earning 3% interest linked to a
Paypal account which is the new criteria I use for new bike desires. No money
no bike/wheels/parts/etc.
Since bikes are my main vice in retirement I feel ok with my childlike wanting
desires and have a mature adult like check and balance system.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

2020-05-13 Thread Brian Campbell
4 or 5 years ago I picked up a vintage Trek 710 that ended up having a
stuck seat post. I removed the crank set and put some penetrating fluid
into the seat tube via the open bottom bracket. I let it sit for a few days
and it still would not budge.

An internet search showed me that I could clamp the seat in a vise and use
the frame as a lever to break the stuck post free. So I did.

A strong push, a cracking sound and movement!

So I leaned in to it and split the seat lug down to the seat tube and bent
it outward. The post was still stuck and it was the seat lug breaking
rather than the post moving. l learned that force is not always your
friend. Its one I have to keep remanding myself of over & over when it
comes to bike repair..

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Hub Recommendations

2020-05-13 Thread ascpgh
I've been conditioned by previous experience to do things right, once.
Sometimes it's because I built something using less than the best materials
because I didn't know about better choices or because it seemed like
appropriate cost containment. The work and waste to undo something down to
the point of a failure, necessity of replacement and a temporary
substitute. This has applied in carpentry (pick each piece of lumber
yourself), cabinet building (use the best fasteners and hardware), tiling
(Ditra uncoupling mat), hardwood floors (have your own milled), old British
(replace any Lucas part with others), Italian cars (Bayless Racing's timing
belts), and bicycles- the source of so many trials and errors chronicled by
these threads.

My first SON was for my commuter to which I am less committed than the hub.
It is ridden in whatever comes and spends its time at home indoors so the
proprietary atmospheric compensation to prevent moisture being sucked into
the hub is key, I think. It has performed flawlessly with virtually no
attention or care from me other than wiping it occasionally. I believe this
environmental change of indoor storage and year-round use is what killed
the previous Phil Wood BB in a significantly shorter time and mileage than
should be expected.

When picking parts for my new bike I had no hesitation about repeating the
choice of the SON (with the SL feature since the frame and fork were
custom).

[RBW] Re: Admissions of Things You Ought to Have Known But Did Not: A Thread

2020-05-13 Thread Austin B.
My first attempt at installing a new crankset on a square-taper BB went as
poorly as it could a few years back. The spindle lengths matter for what?
Here's how it went (*Bold are actions I took*, *italics are my thoughts as
best I can recall*):

   1. *Shiny new drive-side crankset goes on the spindle. **Crank down the
bolt. Done. Terrific! That was easy!*
   2. *Inspect by brilliant handy work. **Oh wait, why the heck isn't this
thing spinning? Crap--the small chainring is jammed against the
chainstay! Better remove the bolt and back it off.*
   3. *Pulling and shimmying for a few minutes.* *This thing's on there
good! Better use the crank puller.*
   4. *Crank puller fail.* *Oh crap, it's so tight it just stripped the
treads on my new crank! WTF??*
   5. *Went to Google: *"how to remove square-taper crankset"
   6. *Went to Amazon: order placed for pulling tool. **Yeah, this will get
   it off.*
   7. *Pulling tool arrives. **Pulling tool fail.** F#*k! This #$#%ing
   thing just ruined my crank!*
   8. *Facepalm. Desperation sets in--t**o the Dremel tool. **I just need
to get the damn thing off. Screw saving the crank.*
   9. *After about 20-30 minutes of cutting into my alloy crank, it came
off the bike.** I'm NEVER using a square-taper BB again. These things are
   cursed!*

For the record, I am actually mechanically-inclined and do all of my own
bike maintenance. But this was a blatant lack of understanding of these BB
on my part. And despite swearing off square-taper BBs, I am actually
running one on my Roadeo which I've installed successfully myself on two
different bikes.

Learning has occurred.

[RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike

2020-05-13 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
FYI the “braking assistance” as they refer to it in the app can be adjusted for
sensitivity or turned off altogether. I happen to really like that feature as
I rarely use my own brakes except when coming to a full stop at a light etc.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Hub Recommendations

2020-05-13 Thread Peter White
Several years ago, SP hubs were made by a company named KT. I don't know
when that business relationship ended but since it ended, SP hubs have been
made elsewhere. As far as I know, there is no SP factory as such. They are
all being made under contract with some hub manufacturer.

Since SP's relationship with KT ended, word is the quality has gone
downhill. One distributor I've gotten to know over the years has stopped
importing SP and only imports hubs manufactured by KT. The reason is the
extremely high return rate he was seeing for SP hubs due to various defects.

The Kasai hubs from Soma are KT hubs.
