Looking forward to seeing the eventual unveiling, which we know will be
beautifully photographed (and probably involve a wooden rails-to-trails
bridge in the backcountry and/or giant trees dripping with moss).

Re: [RBW] Re: Secret Platy

2021-12-29 Thread Roberta
Liz,

Your story is so exciting. You've happily ridden a fabulous bike for 15
years and now it's time for a change up. Isn't the Clem L marvelous? I've
only ridden one for a short ride or two, but it was smooth, like a
Cadillac. I know it's "heavy" but it sure doesn't ride heavy. I have a
Platy for my step through and retirement (in a few years) bike, and if I
had more room, I'd love to have a Clem L, too.

So, welcome to the board and to being a RivSister! Many happy miles of
smiles, and be sure to post a bike picture if you can.

No crashes, little use as it sat for 10 years after a car accident and
2 back surgeries till I stared to ride again after COVID hit. I estimate
 4-5,000 miles or less.

Where where sold stripped, added is a Shimano BB made in Japan, UN 91,
Suntour headset that was NOS when built, and Tektro R556 side pull brakes.
The steerer tube was left high when originally built up.

I will pack this very securely, so no worries there.

Ask question please. If concerned on price please PM me.

 Asking $900 plus shipping.

I know I've been lacking on adventure content on the Bombadil the past
couple months. This is actually because the Bombadil is not available to
ride right now... more on that in the new year but it's a good thing.

But this past weekend I had a lot of good experiences with the
Hillborne - there was a low-key organized gravel ride "CXmas" happening on
the Sunday, but the weather looked terrible, so I chose to get out for a
long-ish, road-ish ride on Saturday. 75km total with about 15km of gravel
 paths.

But then I decided to get up early and go on the gravel ride anyway
despite being a bit stiff and sore from the previous day. In my mind, I
 was
going to ride to the meet point (coffee shop about 10km from home) and
 play
 it by ear.

The ride started with a series of rooty, steep trails that connected
through the neighborhood to the start of the forest. The route then
followed a network of trails up the Seymour valley, which is the same
valley featured in nearly all my Bombadil photos. The Hillborne was on
extralight Babyshoe slicks, which are certainly a bit under-gunned for
these trails but keeping mindful of that, no issues.

The rain started at the start of the ride, and became heavier as the
ride went on. At the ~20km mark, the rain turned to snow. It snowed hard,
and the snow was wet. It was a particularly slippery snow, but the gravel
underneath provided enough traction most of the time - definitely had to
 be
careful though; spinning out when trying to pedal up hills reminded me
there wasn't a lot of traction available.

By the time we reached the lake at the end of the valley, there was
about 3" of snow on the ground and traction was so bad that even on flat
ground, my pedaling did not result in forward motion at all. My fenders
packed with the wet snow to the point that my wheels wouldn't spin when I
pushed the bike, they just dragged. I was 30 km from home at this point
 and
10km of it would be in these conditions. Wooops.

But thankfully, even though I was the only member of the group with
slicks (and with tight fitting fenders), the group agreed that the paved
path was too slippery to ride and we took the gravel service road (not
 open
to the public, but given the safety risks of the parkway, we felt we had a
good argument if we got stopped); and I broke all the snow out of the
fender with a stick (which I had to use once more before we got far enough
 out that conditions improved).

A good adventure with the "road bike" for sure! I sure as heck love
the Hillborne. I've had it 25 months now, and am nearing 6000 km on it
which is the most mileage I've had on any bike - and I am as sure as ever
that I would never sell this bike! There has never been a bike I could say
 that with such conviction before.

[RBW] Re: Good weekend on the Hillborne

Wow Jason, that looks smoking!

Great take on PG/SG, can't wait to see it built up again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Secret Platy

2021-12-29 Thread JAS
Liz, congratulations on your Clem! May you have many pleasurable miles
whether for exercise, utility or leisure. I'm another one of those 2-bike
RivSisters. I got a used Clem first and then the Platy a couple of years
later; I love them both for many of the reasons Leah has explained. I have
the Clem set up to haul groceries and ride gravel trails. The Platy is my
"go-fast" bike that still might get a rack sometime. Because I'm in the
rainy (now snowy!) Pacific Northwest, they both have fenders as well. I've
had a hip replacement and find the step-through frame so convenient I'll
never go back to a diamond frame. As you know, these bikes are a delight
to ride.

Keep dreaming about that Platy...

Dear Liz,

I really cannot overemphasize how delighted I am to read your note.
Congratulations on a long track record of faithfully commuting on your
Atlantis. You are an example to us, #RivSister! Also, congratulations on your
retirement - may you have even more happy miles to fill the days.

Let’s talk Clems and Platys. If you end up with both, you’ll join a
well-populated group of us (mostly women) who own a Clem-Platy pair. I am not
at all surprised that you adore your new Clem. I have said so many times that
bike feels like a hero and a hug. 2020 was one of the roughest years of my life
and that Clem got me through. It was honestly the best thing I had access to in
my grieving process. Because of that, I still associate it with stress-relief,
and that is the bike I ride when all is not right in my world. Ah, but the
Platypus. It’s a completely different bike and just as essential. Not as
convenient to put a leg through, but convenient enough, and also gorgeous.
Rides swiftly and easily. Good clean fun! The Clem feels longer and plusher.
You’ll fall in love with BOTH. And please, do share your photos. We welcome
them! ♥️

Re: [RBW] Re: Secret Platy

2021-12-29 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
So happy to have more and more women riding Rivendell bikes. Kudos to Leah
and the many previous original Riv riders who have ridden and posted so
many great pictures and stories about biking. I found Riv because they
made bikes large enough for me; but now I am proud to ride beautiful bikes
that women have embraced as well.
How do I get Grant to design a 68cm Platypus. Maybe I will grab a 64cm
Clem L but I definitely don’t need a full build. I have hoarding
tendencies.

Re: [RBW] Re: My Frank Jones Sr is finally where I want it

2021-12-29 Thread Jay Lonner
At the risk of derailing the topic (pun semi-intended) the lack of IGH
support on Rivs has become an issue for me. I had a Gus in my cart when
they went on sale recently - my size, my color - but ultimately didn’t go
through with it because I really like the Rohloff that I have on my Bike
Friday. I know it’s possible to kludge it, but I’d prefer to have a bike
that has the proper dropouts and brazeons to begin with. Anybody know of a
maker who offers a frame with Hillibike features that’s designed to
accommodate an IGH and disc brakes? The Tumbleweed Prospector and Surly
Ogre come close but don’t have the long wheelbase. Riv’s designs are
influential so I suppose it’s only a matter of time…

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Fillet FacePlater Quill Stem 31.8

2021-12-29 Thread Maxwell Olmos
Hey y'all I finished a beautiful XO-3 and went with a dirt drop setup with
bar ends. Only thing is my dirt drops are the remakes which are 31.8 clamp.
So I got the Crust quill stem but its only a 60mm stem and the reach is
very short now. I need an 85mm or 110mm.

https://www.rivbike.com/products/stem-546aah-l982kr

Does anyone have this stem in 85mm preferably or 110mm?

Re: [RBW] Bar end vs Downtube

2021-12-29 Thread Brian McDermott
Downtube shifters are fine, but the main drawback as others have said is
the reach. Definitely great if you're frequently changing out your cockpit.

However, you just can't beat the accessibility of bar end shifters,
especially if your bike is loaded. As for front end clutter, I'm a fan of
running the cables all the way up under the tape so they exit by the stem,
like your brake cables.

I can’t say they were horrible but I much prefer bar mounted shifters

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs Downtube

2021-12-29 Thread Ben Adrian
I love the idea of downtube shifters; simplicity, good looks, easy packing,
disassembly, and repair, etc. However, as soon as I'm off road, bar-end
shifters become much nicer and down tube is a giant pain.

Right now, I have downtube shifters on my Ram. However, I'm still getting
my bars and stem length set up. Once I have a setup that I like, I might
move my shifters. I think the plan is to just use DTs until they drive me
crazy... then I'll switch ;)

Re: [RBW] Re: Secret Platy

2021-12-29 Thread Liz Tilton
Hello from a long-time Rivendell Atlantis rider/first time poster to this
group…and congratulations on your beautiful new Platypus, Leah. For more
than 15 years, I commuted 26 round-trip, hillyish miles to work two or
three days per week on my Atlantis; now I’m 63-years old, no longer
commuting to work, and my aging hips make it clear it’s time for a
step-through frame, so I entered the Clem lottery. Last week my new
Rivendell-built-up Clem arrived, and I fell head over heels at the first
pedal stroke. I thought I’d simply take it on an easy first ride to get the
feel of the new set up, but I returned home 10 miles later. Somewhere in
those miles, my anxieties regarding a longer-wheelbased, heavier bike
dissipated. I was sooo relieved.

This is just to say that I loaded this Clem with racks and baskets etc for
hauling …and because I feel the need to replace my Atlantis with a
step-through frame for lighter, more carefree rides, I, too, am eyeing a
Platypus. :)

I’ve enjoyed reading all of your posts here…they’ve been invaluable to me
as I’ve pondered how to age while continuing to ride an excellent and
beautiful bike; and I’m also so grateful for Will and James at Rivendell
for their continued reassurances that this 53cm Clem should, in fact, fit
5’3” me. I was both excited and terrified at what would arrive on my porch,
and I’m elated that I already love it.

[RBW] Re: Good weekend on the Hillborne

2021-12-29 Thread Willet Mather

Sounds as though the Bombadil might be doing a stint in rehab??? Looking
forward to seeing the eventual unveiling, which we know will be beautifully
photographed (and probably involve a wooden rails-to-trails bridge in the
backcountry and/or giant trees dripping with moss).

Re: [RBW] Re: Touring Front, Neo-Retro Back?

2021-12-29 Thread 'Sean, PNW' via RBW Owners Bunch
The line of logic, as I understand it, is according to Paul, the
'Neo-Retro' brakes are more powerful, yet pose heel clearance issues when
used in the rear, so are most often relegated to the front where the bulk
of stopping power is needed while their 'Touring' cantis fit better in the
rear.

However, in my experience, Paul 'Touring' cantis have typically been more
powerful than 'Neo-Retros', as addressed here:

*"So I would guess that the narrow-stance Touring Canti, if set up with a
low straddle cable as described by Sheldon Brown...would actually be more
powerful than the wide-stance Neo-Retro – the opposite of what the Paul
site says." *- Lennard Zinn /
https://www.velonews.com/gear/technical-faq-with-lennard-zinn-a-detailed-look-at-brake-shudder/

Regardless of the model, cantis of all flavors benefit heavily from proper
set up:

Thanks, all, and thanks to *nlerner*—I bookmarked your link for project
time…. Grant getting into IGHs would be awesome, but I haven’t seen any
sign of that. He’s deeply involved in saving derailleurs from
“shimanication.” Sadly (or maybe my prejudice is showing) I suspect that
electrification is taking the bicycle world by overwhelming storm. OTOH,
I’m getting older, so maybe a step-thru electric is in my two-wheeled
future. Meanwhile I’ll hang onto my FJ single speed the way I hang onto my
two seat roadster. 
