Re: [RBW] Lovely Blue Riv Custom

2023-04-15 Thread Joe Bernard
It looks like my custom with a higher toptube..same lugs, same fillet BB
shell, same road fork crown, same clearances. Mine was designed as a
light-ish street bike that could handle non-touring loads and non-gnarly
trails, with plenty of clearance for fat tires or narrower tires with
fenders. I suspect this person's bicycle will see all that clearance filled
eventually.

Re: [RBW] Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-04-15 Thread Peter Adler
Busch & Muller make a fork crown mount specifically for cantis; it's made
of the same stainless rod. Instead of going upwards like the standard B
mount you have now, it drops down about 1 cm below the brake hole to dip
under the straddle; not great for fenders, but an LA bike can probably live
fenderless most years. It'll drop the light down maybe 3-4 cm from it's
current position.

I got one a while back from Peter White Cycles, when I was getting my Luxos
U replaced under warranty and got some extra stuff to capitalize on the
shipping:

B Busch & Müller Cyo cantilever mount $10.00

https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b

I think a better bet is to move the mount out in front of the bag, if at
all possible, or at least out of the plane of the obstructing bag. My
normal preference would be to mount it at the front of the rack, as I
usually have a supporting rack for a handlebar bag; but the Nitto F18
rack/Ostrich bag setup you're using doesn't lend itself to such
attachments. Perhaps a better option is to mount one of those
handlebar-substitute posts to the midfork braze-on, and mount the light
there; it gets the light patch further out into the roadway (if you attach
it to the left fork blade) or further onto the shoulder (if you attach it
to the right fork blade). depending on where you ride; it gets the light
low enough that you won't be blasting oncoming traffic in their eyes, and
it gets it far enough away from the wheel that you shouldn't have a big
shadow in the light patch. The Paul Gino

is the mount I originally knew (and you can get it anodized in a green
that's pretty close to your paint), but I bought a Nitto M12 at a swap on
which the seller had included an equivalent Nitto mount that did the same
thing. I can't locate that mount for sale right now, so it may have been
discontinued, but you might turn one up from the usual old-stuff-for-sale
sources. Here's another Nitto mount in the same design
;
this one replaces the nut on a quick release skewer.

I take it the Selle An-Atomica is a fairly recent purchase? I was really
disappointed about six years ago when they replaced the Honey color with
the more mottled honey+brown Tool color. In my last SA-A end-of-year sale
buying binge (Xmas 2021), I gritted my teeth and got a Tool H2 because it's
what they had. I'm glad to see that the Tool color has gotten more
honey-ish; maybe if I send my stretched-out 2013 honey X1 back for a new
top, I'll get something that's approximately the same color, assuming
they're willing to make a top in the older, longer form.

2023-04-15 Thread Ryan
Worth a look. The 2 Marks and Joe Bell have worked their usual magic.
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news/joshs-rivendell-custom?mc_cid=d5e44cc458_eid=0074b52ae1

I wonder if the custom program will ever return. I know Riv says it's a
huge time and money sink, but I love seeing what people order for their
customs and ogling the fine craftsmanship on display. Josh, whoever he is,
must be thrilled after what was apparently a lengthy wait. But the result
was worth it, judging by the pictures.

Just sayin'

Ryan

Re: [RBW] Timeline for a Repaint (for a friend)

2023-04-15 Thread Matthew Williams
Finally, a question I can help answer!

Back in October, Rick at D painted my forks and he did a fantastic job. RBW
advised me to expect a four-week backlog; Rick said the turnaround was about
two to three weeks.

Rick sandblasted my forks, matched the color, he added an accent I wanted, and
gave me a small bottle of touch-up paint. I picked up my forks about ten days
after I dropped them off.

My forks were a small project (as opposed to an entire frame) and I can’t speak
for Rick's schedule, but I can say I couldn’t be happier with the finshed
result. Rick is amazing.

[RBW] Re: Son Hub advice

2023-04-15 Thread Mr. Ray
Like others have said, get the hub for the brakes you use. If you still
want to "future proof", get the SON disc hub for Shimano "centerlock"
discs. It provides a slightly stronger wheel build than the "6 bolt ISO"
disc version; spokes closer to equal on both sides. Also pick the 12mm
thru axle version. With an adaptor you can make this version work with
QR's.

[RBW] Re: Son Hub advice

2023-04-15 Thread lconley
Disc brakes with quick release hubs are a PITA. Get the widest SON
non-disc hub that that you can afford.
But remember, this advice is coming from an overweight guy who builds new
wheels for himself several times a year, so I go all-in on wheel strength,
I have a huge parts stash, and I know that obsolete parts are just an eBay
search away.

Peter White, the generator hub guru, is the importer for SON hubs and also
sells Panasonic generator hubs (until his current stock sells out) $60 for
non disc, $70 for disc. You could build two Panasonic hubbed wheels for the
price of a SON hubbed wheel if you wanted. But get the wide SON hub wheel.

Laing
Who owns four SON hubs (1 disc), two Shimano generator hubs, one Shutter
Precision disc generator hub, one Sturmey Archer OG drum brake Dynohub, one
Panasonic disc Dyna Hub, one Sanyo bottom bracket mounted generator, one
Flying Pigeon OE bottle generator, and one VO sourced generator hub (that
doesn't play well with LED lights) that I cannot remember the manufacturer
of.

Re: [RBW] Son Hub advice

2023-04-15 Thread Brian Turner
If you're thinking about "future proof", I'd just add this: it's getting
more and more rare to find new disc brake bikes with QR, so if it were me,
I would feel a bit limited with a QR disc wheelset these days. Most
everything disc is going to thru-axle. I'd get the hub for the brakes
you're riding most, IMO.

[RBW] Timeline for a Repaint (for a friend)

2023-04-15 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
No, not for me, I love my paint! But my new RivSister friend acquired a 55
cm mermaid Platypus and she, like Heather (who dreamt of pumpkin) and me
(who coveted raspberry), can only be truly, sublimely happy if her Platy is
a lemon meringue yellow (with a bit of metallic).

She will take her frame to D but hasn’t actually been able to arrange
this yet. She was hoping it could be done rather quickly, but I suspect
there will be a wait. Can anyone here, who has had a Rick-Repaint, please
advise as to timeline? Are we talking weeks? Months? Several months?

We would MOST appreciate your input!
Thanks in advance,
Leah

Re: [RBW] Son Hub advice

2023-04-15 Thread Peter White
Disc hubs typically don't have the flange spacing as wide as a non-disc
hub. On a disc wheel, having the rim flexing from side to side isn't a
problem. But with rim brakes if the rim is flexing side to side it will be
rubbing on the brake pads, especially if you run your pads close to the
rim, as I do. So yes, you can certainly use a disc hub with rim brakes, but
it isn't ideal, unless you're a very light rider. For example, Linda and I
both have SON Deluxe hubs on our road bikes. I weigh about 40lbs more than
Linda. I use the Wide Body version and she uses the standard SON Deluxe.
Neither of us need to charge any electronics while we ride, so we don't use
the slightly heavier SON 28 hubs.

[RBW] Son Hub advice

2023-04-15 Thread Peter Fray
Hi,

I'm looking to get the Son dynamo hub. Considering it's price I'd rather
make an informed (still quite impulsive) decision..hah!

I have a bike with both rim and disc brake mounts (with QR) so I usually
buy disc hubs, to future proof the hub purchase, but continue to run
v-brakes (for now). Is this a sound approach to continue with this buy i.e.
disc hubs with v-brake rims?

Based on SON's website, I think Son28 would be appropriate considering it's
better to charge devices at low speeds. So, in this case I would take the
"SON 28 Hub Dynamo - 6-Bolt - QR".

Thank you for your insight!
