[RBW] FS: Bleriot 61 cm

2021-09-11 Thread Aaron Thomas

FS: Bleriot 61 cm

I am posting this for a friend who is not on the Rivendell list. He is
looking to sell his Bleriot (61 cm) complete. He’s throwing in some
bike-related paraphernalia as well, since he no longer cycles.

Local pickup in the San Francisco Bay Area area is highly preferred. He and
the bike are in Sacramento, and he is willing to meet someone halfway. If
shipped, the buyer would pay packing and shipping.

I helped him piece together his Bleriot. It was a standard Rivendell build
for the period: Nitto stem and bars, Sugino cranks, Shimano shifters, MKS
pedals, etc. (see build details below).

He was a newbie, rode the bike on asphalt bike routes several dozen times
over a couple of years, and then got too busy with work to continue
cycling. The bike has been stored in his garage ever since. It is still in
good condition. There are some paint chips and scratches here and there,
which he has tried to detail accurately in the photos.

Having just sat around for the better part of a decade, the bike could
probably use a tune up and some new tubes and tires. Or treat it as your
blank slate, part it out, and build it back up as you please. I have a
Bleriot of my own and it is a fantastic bike, sadly discontinued.

He is asking $1,500. His name is Amir, and you can contact him at
ami...@gmail.com

Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/193979568@N08/albums/72157719814875716

Since he is not on this list, I will help field any questions that may
arise here. But for all logistics, please contact Amir directly.

Geometry can be found on Cyclofiend's website:

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres 700 x 30 substitutes?

2020-08-15 Thread Aaron Thomas
Paul, thank you, this is helpful.

I'd be using the Soma Supples on Velocity A23 rims, which have an internal
width of 18 mm. Sounds like it should be right around 32 or 33, which is
what I'm looking for. I have been using Jack Brown greens (33) and
Panaracer GravelKings (32), and just want to mix it up a bit with something
else in that ballpark — but with the lightweight performance casing.

I was using the Challenge Strada Bianca "open tubular" in 30 mm, and loved
the ride, but have had some issues with them blowing off my A23 rims (but
not on Mavic Open Pro), so I'm sticking with clinchers for my A23 wheels.
I'm going to give the Soma Supple a try. Thanks!

2020-08-13 Thread Aaron Thomas
Paul,

Regarding the Soma Supple Vitesse tires, how accurate are the size
designations when inflated? Or perhaps more to the point, if you have used
the 33 mm, is it truly in the ballpark of 33? I bought some Challenge tires
labeled 33 mm but they inflated to nearly 37 mm!

Secondly, in your experience, how puncture prone is the extralight version
compared to the standard version?

Thanks,
Aaron

[RBW] New York Times debate on Rules of the Road

2013-10-22 Thread Aaron Thomas
I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned in another thread, but list
members may be interested in a section posted in the New York Times
debating Rules of the Road. Grant Petersen is among the debaters.

While I agree with his general proposition that making driving more
inconvenient could help the cause of bicycle commuting, I'm not so
convinced on some of the particulars. I am quite in favor, however, of The
Idaho Stop he mentions.

Parking in and around Peet's Coffee on Montana Ave and 14th Street is
generally not a problem. Some blocks are permit-only, but most are entirely

[RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and innovation

2013-03-04 Thread Aaron Thomas
In light of Grant's recent Blug post, which mentioned the influence of Tom
Ritchey, this interview just published on Road Bike Review may be of
interest to the list:

I particularly liked his quip that the bike industry, which innovated
away from clearances to run larger tires, is in some ways 'innovating'
back to where we started.

[RBW] Re: Vittoria Cross EVO XN 700x32c Silver Tread

2013-02-02 Thread Aaron Thomas
I haven't tried the Vittoria, but I have used the Challenge Grifo XS, which
has a similar file tread, plus some small knobs on the shoulders:

http://www.challengetech.it/products/cyclocross/grifo-xs-open-020/en

They are fantastic tires. Think of them as a faster rolling Jack Brown with
a bit of tread for dirt and sandy terrain. They are quite durable and roll
well on pavement.

Re: [RBW] Fattest/supplest 700c tires for my S1

2013-01-22 Thread Aaron Thomas
David's tire suggestions are exactly what I would have counseled.

It's interesting that the Challenge site doesn't list the Eroica anymore.
That'd be a shame if they stopped making them — they are wonderful tires!

However, it looks like they've introduced another gravel racing tire: the
Almanzo. Same width as the Eroica, but with nibbly tread, like the one
found on the Grifo XS:

http://www.challengetech.it/products/road/almanzo-open-030/00521/en

That would be pretty awesome too. Good options out there!

[RBW] Re: Go fast bike: San Marcos?

2012-12-03 Thread Aaron Thomas
Tony,

Quick head's up on your brake reach issue. Looks like you're using the
wrong brake up front — and that's why the brake pads are high in the slots.
Only the 650B sizes of the San Marcos (i.e. 47, 51) use the long reach
Tektro 559 (55-73mm). The 700c sizes use standard reach brakes (47-57 mm).
That'd be the Tektro R539 http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/brsbm59.htm.
Did you try putting a standard reach brake on the front?

 on which frame to purchase.

I bought a Sam Hillborne a couple of years back and went through a number
of drivetrain and accessory changes. It's been my go fast, commuting,
townie, and cyclocross bike so I feel qualified in comparing both bikes. My
Sam has had a number of personalities in regards to set up and ride
characteristics. I currently have it set up as a townie with fenders, 32mm
tires, drop bars, and a basket (*contemplating a dirt drop stem and flat
bars with cork grips*). I also have a San Marcos set up as a commuter,
club ride bike, and cyclocross bike. My San Marcos has a mix of Shimano
parts, 32mm tires, a Velo Orange rack, and drop bars. *To answer your
original question, the San Marcos is an excellent choice for a go fast bike.

 *San Marcos Criticism #1*

I'm not sure if this is true for different sizes, but you'll need standard
reach brake calipers up front and long reach calipers in the rear if you
purchase a 54cm San Marcos. I am not sure if this is true of the other
sizes or with any other 54cm San Marcos frames. I am running Tektro R559
brakes on this bike--the fit of the rear calipers is spot on however long
reach calipers up front don't seem to fit properly. Have a look at the
attached photo and you'll see that the fork was not designed for long reach
brakes. Conjecture says that this bike should use standard reach brakes and
that the rear brake bridge on my bike was welded too far upwards,
 necessitating longer reach brakes.

 https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hPpChC7_z00/ULul4qOoEJI/AuI/nMYrtVGrYoc/s1600/DSC00209.JPG

 *San Marcos Criticism #2*

The dropouts on this bike suck compared to the ones on my Sam. As you can
see from the photos, the front dropouts originally come with lawyer tabs--I
quickly filed those off after acquiring the bike. The rear dropout eyelets
are welded too closely to the frame and cause interference when trying to
mount a rack or fenders. The welds get in the way and prevent you from
mounting accessories in a flush manner. The second photo shows a slight gap
between the rack tab and the eyelets because the welds get in the way.
Moreover, the decorative part of the Soma dropouts interfere with the
quick-release hub skewer--this is not the case with my Sam.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U7UDrv1Nts0/ULul_MczA-I/AuQ/gNXYgLA5_9E/s1600/DSC00210.JPG

 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OiPJ0hY_jvk/ULumDgoGmRI/AuY/pDBz7q0BIEU/s1600/DSC00212.JPG

With all of that said, the San Marcos is an excellent bike and I am very
pleased with it. I have no trouble maintaining an average speed of 23mph
while on club rides. It is quite comfortable however feels very sporty and
agile when compared to the Sam Hillborne. Since you already have a Sam, try
to imagine your bike with easier maneuverability, a lighter feel when
climbing, and less squirrel*liness*. If you go with mainly Nitto parts,
more spokes than less, and wide tires, you'll have no worries about
durability if you end up with a San Marcos.

I haven't had the chance to test ride a Roadeo, but I imagine that model
to be much more suitable for fast riding than the San Marcos. The Roadeo is
a gorgeous frame, and would probably be the ONE frame I would have if I
could only own one bike. But since I'm fortunate enough to have two, I feel
the San Marcos can easily be differentiated from the Sam Hillboarne while
retaining those absolute must characteristics (comfort, durability,
versatility). In your shoes, I would try to get past the eccentricities of
the San Marco because it's so much cheaper than the Roadeo...then I'd use
the left over money to purchase an awesome wheel set and an SRAM Apex group.

Re: [RBW] Blug question

I agree with Jim Thill. I don't much care for Tumblr for Riv purposes and
think Wordpress, Blogspot, or similar platform makes more sense for this
type of content and Grant's approach to blugging.

Especially irksome is that when subscribing to the feed via Google Reader,
the Blug posts are truncated to the first few words, which requires that
you go visit Tumblr's domain outside of your news reader environment. I
understand the commercial reason for this, in that it effectively takes you
to a landing page where you can easily access rivbike.com to go shopping.
But it does add an unnecessary step as far as efficient reading of the blug
goes.

You can set it up so that tumblr automatically republishes stuff from

That's a really nice frame too. I wonder about the accuracy of the seller's

[RBW] Re: Just Ride

2012-05-17 Thread Aaron Thomas
Jim,

As someone who straddles the line between Rivendellish sensibilities and
club rider hammering, I can relate to the seemingly divergent desires of
your customer. And I wonder whether there needs to be such a stark
dichotomy drawn between a practical bike and one suitable for
fitness-oriented clubby rides.

Others have suggested a Surly LHT. My thought is another: why not one of
the new Surly Pacers, which are designed for standard reach brakes? It
could be built up in a racy, weight-conscious way with a smart mix of
Ritchey or FSA parts and a SRAM Apex or Rival gruppo. A Burly could be
affixed when necessary. And I'm blanking now, but aren't there pedals out
there that have simultaneous clipless and regular shoe capabilities?

Perhaps she could be outfitted with two wheelsets, one with some Jack
Browns for Burly duties, the other with some sensible (to me) 25mm
performance tires, such as Michelin Krylion or Panaracer Type-D.

The only thing that might get in the way of a truly dual-purpose Pacer
would be the rack, which would add unnecessary weight and drag when used
for club rides.

Sounds good to me. Wouldn't mind one myself!

Just Ride was on my mind yesterday when I tried to help a woman decide on
her first nice bike. She wants a sporty-ish bike for Burley-pulling and it

aspires to the racer archetype. I should add that she's the type of woman
that most men would notice in any crowd, which means that various bike
dudes have tried to help her with all sorts of advice. All the usual
suspects were present: the necessity and efficiency of clipless pedals, the
magical properties of carbon, and the (baffling-to-me) popularity of
time-trial bikes, none of which are necessary, or even desirable, in a bike
for daily errands and family rides. Anyway, she was clearly struggling with
the perceived compromises between making a bike useful and making a bike
fast (or at least light/expensive enough to impress the racer wannabe
crowd). I thought to myself: this would be a lot easier if she could drop
the racer notions and stop hanging out with guys who read Bicycling
Magazine as a comprehensive source of cycling wisdom.

Maybe there should be a spoiler alert here - be advised that I will be

I finished reading the book tonight, which if I can summarize in a line,
is about all the good things about bikes that appear only when you toss
racer prejudices and attitudes out the window and Just Ride. After the
first few chapters, I thought that maybe the editors really sanitized GP's
historically familiar against-the-grain opinions to be more blandly
vanilla, hopefully to be appealing to a broader audience. The general
content wasn't unpredictable to me, having read the Readers and Catalogs
and most everything else Riv going back to 2004 when I wanted a touring
bike and couldn't find any to buy except the Atlantis (that's how I first
found Riv in the internet universe). But I was somewhat surprised that
there was little to no discernible lug evangelism or quill stem absolutism
or singing the praises of friction shifters, and the Retro-Grouchiness was
 held to a dull roar.

But as I got further along in the book, I started to think that maybe Mr
Petersen has simply mellowed about the trivial details over the years (I
know I have!). Or maybe more accurately, there's less to be peeved about in
the bike industry now than there was 10 years ago or even 5 years ago.
After all, smart, sturdy bikes with ample tire clearance and useful
braze-ons and some attention to classic, non-billboard aesthetics have
become, dare I say, normal. If racing bikes and gear are the status quo in
the world, then I must live in a lucky bubble in South Minneapolis where I
ride and fix bikes every day, as I see lots of reincarnated 1980s
sport-tourers, old steel MTBs, and new(ish) Surly Cross-checks and LHTs on
a daily basis, but feel like I see relatively few road bikes being ridden
by obvious faux-racers. To the extent that bike trends have steered toward
the benefit of the Unracer over the past decade or so, my opinion is that
Grant and Rivendell played a large part in it. This is not to say that all
smart bike designs and product offerings are shameless Riv-ripoffs, but
that Grant gave voice to a backlash movement and opened a long-neglected
market to a lot of smart, creative people who maybe couldn't or wouldn't
have done it without some pioneering coattails to ride on.

Challenge Parigi-Roubaix -- hands down. No question, the best tire in that
width.

On a Mavic Open Pro they measure about 28.5. On a Velocity A23 they're more
like 29.

I got a Ritchey Classic silver stem, but you'd need a shim. And it only
comes in 31.8 clamp diameter. It looks pretty nice, though I'm not crazy

[RBW] Re: AHH or Rodeo?

2012-04-05 Thread Aaron Thomas
I agree with those who advocate the Roadeo. I've test ridden the 55cm floor
model extensively, taking it out for long rides over several days. It's a
superb bike: responsive, stable, peppy.

It isn't as quick handling or spry as an Italian race bike, but that in
itself may be an argument in its favor, depending on what ride
characteristics you desire and prefer. With careful attention to
components, a Roadeo could be built up reasonably lightweight.

This isn't to say that a Hilsen can't be built light or used as a club
racer. I've seen one noteworthy example of a racy
Hilsenhttp://mrbill.homeip.net/albums/lkhc_mt_hamilton.2007.11.22/pages/page_16.html,

decked out with Campy record carbon and a threadless fork/stem. This setup
certainly didn't hold this guy back on this ride; he smoked many people to
the top of the mountain (myself included).

Yet I do find something odd looking about the Hilsen with 23 mm tires --
just looks kinda goofy. The Roadeo has slightly tighter clearances, so a 23
mm tire wouldn't look as out of place.

[RBW] Re: Bike Fit - Back Pain - RivRiders Handlebar Survey

2012-04-02 Thread Aaron Thomas
Stem-slamming jokes aside, Esteban's test is worth trying. I used to ride
with my bars at or above saddle height, but after some experimentation
found that bars lower than saddle height provided a much more comfortable
arrangement.

Note, however, that I coupled this shift in bar height with a zero setback
seatpost in place of a standard setback post I had been using. If you lower
your bars, you may also want to ditch your VO wayback post and replace it
with either a normal setback post or zero setback.

On Monday, April 2, 2012 5:05:14 PM UTC-7, Bruce Curry wrote:

Tis the season to be putting on more miles and I am experiencing more
pronounced lower back pain. For some reason climbing makes it even
worse. I feel like my bars are too far forward for me but don't wan't
to launch on a stem buying spree without some scientific study and
addl input from group members. The facts:

64cm Ram with the bars about 3cm over saddle height, 60cm cockpit w/a
12cm stem and a VO wayback seatpost w/a brooks B17. I am tall with
long torso short arms. When I look at my front hub thru my bars the
hub is about an inch ahead of the line made by the bars (but since the
bars are up so high this point is essentially moot). What I think is
probably the most telling issue is that my knees remain about 7 away
from my bars (measured horizontally from each other from a purely
eyeballed vertical plane separating my knee from the bars). The
method I used to take this measurement was to spin backwards holding
onto the wall looking straight down at a tape measure to judge the
imaginary horizontal distance from the farthest forward progress of
 the knee.

Has anyone else faced this challenge? Solution? Does the knee-bar
quotient seem like a rational metric. Anyone else care to share
 their number?

[RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??

2012-03-16 Thread Aaron Thomas
I've been riding the Clement Strada in both 25 and 28. And I like 'em in
both sizes. No flats yet in either. But the rubber on the sidewalls does
seem a bit fragile; mine have a couple of nicks, though nothing that's cut
through the casing (yet).

As you mention, the 28s measure more like 27 on my Velocity Aeroheads. Kind
of like a poor man's Challenge Parigi Roubaix, though in my experience they
don't feel quite as fast as the Challenge.

They're a nice option for winter riding, given their all black
sidewalls/tread. Grime and muck don't show up.

notice the impact on overall handling.

Most of my riding is short trips ( 30miles or under ) and commuting
 (10 miles round trip).

Right now I have Pasela 28's and 35's to sort of switch between. If I
decide I need something in between (best of both worlds?) then Jack
Brown Greens are my next purchase.

[RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??

2012-03-14 Thread Aaron Thomas
Jack Brown Green label are great. I much prefer them to Paselas (TG and
non), whose tread I find squirmy. Jack Brown Blue label are ok -- a little
plodding feeling, but still nicer than Paselas. I can't speak to the
longevity comparison, because I never kept the Paselas on long enough to
find out -- I just didn't care for them.

Kojaks are nice but felt sort of slow rolling to me. Among the tires you
mentioned, here's my pecking order: JB greens, Kojak, JB blue, paselas. The
GB Cypres are supposedly very nice and fast, but also reportedly fragile.

A few comments: The show was kind of overwhelming for this old dog.
But, great to see some old and new faces, and reacquaint old
contacts. The show was more about saying hi and connecting for me, so
I apologize I don't have a lot of technical bike content. But,
 anyway, here goes:

The Six Eleven -- Aaron and Michelle - - a very nice young couple.
Their bikes are not terribly flashy (that's a good thing), but have a
solid, classid appeal. Vendetta and Six Eleven, along with Shamrock,
are on the top of my list after talking with them.

Vendetta - very much enjoyed talking with Conor and Garrett. Low-key,
knowledgeable. Their purple bike ought to be in contention for best
 in show, ATMO.

And speaking of ATMO (Sachs): nice chat with Richard S. He's so
knowledgeable and gracious, recalled the details of the frame he built
for me (and our discussions) from back in 2003. A very interesting
 fellow.

Roland Della Santa - - this guy is great. No b.s., quick turnaround,
should get the award for Framebuilder Least Likely to be Lampooned on
 the TV Show Portlandia.

Tony Pereira - - also a gem of a fellow, with jewel-like bikes. ATMO,
he's the real deal - - solid builder, no b.s., beautiful stuff. A
regular guy who builds very cool stuff.

Mo Rebolledo - - local boy makes good - - another really nice guy.
The paint schemes on his bikes are classic, lovely, and unique.

Shamrock - - another very knowledgeable guy (Tim), great to talk
 with. Beautiful work.

Tom Ritchey - - never met him, not likely I ever will -- he looked
like a rock star with the crowd three-deep around him. Wanted to ask
him about one of his limited editions, but the crowd was just too deep
in his booth. Happy to see Ritchey is now producing nice new silver
 seatposts, handlebars, and stems.

The Brooks Saddles booth looked like an over-the-top set from
Portlandia. The whole knickers, tweed, and handlebar moustache
thing... I'm just sayin. Still, Brooks is Brooks, and I love their
 stuff.

Hope those that made it to the show had a good time.

[RBW] Another busted head tube

2011-11-06 Thread Aaron Thomas
To piggy-back on the recent busted head tube thread, I hereby submit one of
my own for the group's enjoyment. This time, it's a 1980s era Ciocc: photos
herehttps://picasaweb.google.com/104993822296107747388/CioccHeadtubeFailure?authuser=0authkey=Gv1sRgCObKyPvn9syT2QEfeat=directlink
.

A few days ago, I noticed a faint rattling sound, like something had come
loose. I inspected the bike and everything seemed locked down tight enough,
so I continued to ride it. Then yesterday, on a long ride, I noticed that
the steering seemed really off, almost like the front tire had a slow leak
and was beginning to squirm and bounce around. Except the tire was clearly
fully inflated.

At some point, the loose, bouncy front end became so pronounced that it was
abundantly clear that something was seriously wrong. I pulled over to the
shoulder and immediately saw that the head tube had cracked. Fortunately,
it happened while on a long climb and not on the descent that awaited on
the other side of the summit!

It was a really fun bike while it lasted. I just might have to set my eBay
widget to start scouting for another ;)

Aaron

[RBW] Re: Rivendell folding bike?

2011-08-24 Thread Aaron Thomas
I'd like to see Rivendell do a breakaway style bike in the spirit of the
Romulus. It seems there would be an opening in the market for a
Romulus-style breakaway. Hitherto, the only options are a Dahon touring
bike, Ritchey's Road (which accepts only up to 28mm tires), and Ritchey's
cx, which has decent clearances and nice geometry specs, but has an dreaded
(and ugly) crabon fork.

How about a standard reach, caliper-braked, sporty road model à la the
Romulus? Sounds good to me. Who's in?

[RBW] Re: What would Taubes put in a Boxy (or Candy Bar) Bag for a long ride

2011-08-14 Thread Aaron Thomas
You can get Garth's suggestion of dates with Zach's for nuts in the pre-fab
form of a Lara bar. Despite the variety of flavors, they're all basically
some combination of nuts and dates or other dried fruits, with no added
sugar or other b.s. I like the one called cashew cookie. Peanut butter is
good too, as is cherry pie.

I usually crave salty things on long rides. If I want to bring real food
rather than a bar, I usually bring a small sandwich of prosciutto (or jamon
serrano) and cheese, like Manchego, with no condiment. I usually use french
baguette as the bread, because it holds its shape, doesn't crumble, and has
some toothiness to it when you bite into it.

As I understand it, it isn't that carbs are bad. The problem is the quantity
and type being consumed. Easily available fructose seems to be particularly
problematic, whether it comes in the form of sugar, high fructose corn

Robert Lustig at UCSF, which Taubes reports on in his NYT article on sugar:

Re: [RBW] Re: 2 top tubes - Y2TT plus (at the end of it) divisive cultural reference

2011-07-09 Thread Aaron Thomas
If the structural integrity issues produced by the 6 degree upsloping TT are
such that Grant has to make a hard sell on 2TT or compromise on strength,
why not go back to nearly horizontal top tubes? My Romulus and Bleriot both
seem plenty stiff with their lesser 1-2 degree upsloping TTs. When the
6-degree upslope on the Sam was announced, it seemed to me to be something
of solution in search of a problem. And I was never all that crazy about the
aesthetics of the 6-degree upslope. Although it's grown on me somewhat, I
still prefer the look of a horizontal (or nearly-so) TT.

2011-07-02 Thread Aaron Thomas
I don't understand a damn thing you just said, but as to the question in the
subject line, my answer would be yes.

I've been using the Nitto 176 Dream bars on fire roads for the past 4 or 5
years. Haven't snapped yet (knock on wood). From what I understand, the 176
and 185 are basically the same materials/construction, just different reach
and drop dimensions. So the 185s should be fine for moderate off-road use.

of your screen if you're already in your group. From the main Groups page,
instead, the link is called Preview the new Google Groups. Just click and
go.

Changing the way you choose to view it to the new Groups format should
resolve loading speed issues, as the new Groups interface loads lickety
split.

[RBW] Re: Carbon-ectomy using a Carbonomas fork

2011-06-11 Thread Aaron Thomas
I'm the one who asked. Thank you for posting a followup to that thread. I
appreciate hearing your experience. The fork definitely looks good on your
bike.

Do you know if the fork specs were roughly similar to the fork you replaced?
And what 26mm tire are you using?

Thanks,
Aaron

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Reader

2011-05-23 Thread Aaron Thomas
I concur. I found the user interface of keeptrees.com to be really twitchy,
counter-intuitive, and cumbersome. Gimme a simple pdf anyday.

[RBW] Carbonomas fork in real life?

2011-05-18 Thread Aaron Thomas
Has anyone purchased the Carbonomas fork? And if so, what's your experience
with it? How do you like it? And can you post some photos of it on your
rig?

The RBW site has various photos of the prototype, but I'm curious to see
what the final product looks like and to hear what users think of it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Marathon Racer vs Ruffy Tuffy

2011-05-16 Thread Aaron Thomas
The Grifo XS roll beautifully on pavement! Just as well as (actually,
possibly even faster than) the JB Greens, despite the nibbly knobs. And I'm
not saying that to dis' the JB Greens, which I like a lot and think are
really great tires.

I've ridden the Challenge Parigi-Roubaix on gravel/dirt a few times and have
never flatted. They don't have enough volume for gonzo trail riding, but
I've done that too on a whim and didn't flat.

[RBW] Re: Marathon Racer vs Ruffy Tuffy

2011-05-16 Thread Aaron Thomas
Interesting. That hasn't been my experience with the Grifo XS at all. I've
ridden the same trails on both Jack Brown greens and Grifo XS. For me, the
small knobs offer quite a bit of grip in sections that leave the JBs
slipping and spinning out.

I haven't had any cornering issues on asphalt with the side knobs on the
Grifos, nor has the tread peeled away. And I've used them quite a bit on
pavement, riding many miles to-and-from the trailheads. I've found them to
be quite durable and fast tires for any setting, and definitely preferable
to similar width slicks on dirt.

[RBW] Re: Marathon Racer vs Ruffy Tuffy

2011-05-15 Thread Aaron Thomas
For a nice tire around 28 mm wide, I'd opt for the Challenge Parigi-Roubaix,
the Grand Bois Cerf, or the Roll-y Pol-y. I have limited experience with the
Schwalbes (didn't like 'em) and quite a bit of experience with the Ruffy
Tuffy (very durable and long-lasting, but a bit dead feeling). The three
aforementioned tires are all more lively and faster, and I'm able to ride
them at about 85-90 psi.

If I had to chose one of the two you ask about, I'd go Ruffy Tuffy over the
Marathon Racer.

[RBW] Grant's April 10 post

2011-04-10 Thread Aaron Thomas
Maybe I'm missing something (or just need more coffee this morning), but I
can't figure out the purpose of the orange bar tape on his Hilsen. Is it to
increase bottom bracket stiffness? Is it a premonition of more frame
triangulation to come, à la the Diagonapiller? A belated April Fool's
joke? I'm stumped.

[RBW] Re: Soma/Riv Bike

2011-04-07 Thread Aaron Thomas
I wish the Riv/Soma frame didn't have Riv's new signature kickstand plate.
I recall seeing a photo of someone's Hilsen (maybe Cyclofiend's?) that had
been CX-raced in the mud. And the kickstand plate acted as a mud shelf,
piling it up high behind the seat tube.

The kickstand plate seems to limit the versatility of the frame, without
really giving you any significant benefits. After all, you can always add a
kickstand to a frame without a plate. But you can't take a plate off a frame
without labors that would require a re-paint. Other than convenience for
those who use kickstands, what's to be gained by having the built-in plate?
I just don't get it.

I've often been tempted by the Hillborne, but I balk because of that darned
kickstand plate, which is entirely useless to me, and would likely only be a
liability given the sometimes-mucky off-roading I'd want to do on it.
