RE: [RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It? weight 23. 8 pounds

2024-05-22 Thread Bernard Duhon

This link has a good review of the Atlantis. He says it weighs 23.8 pounds.
That seems a little light but it is in the ballpark not a heavy bike.
By comparison of Fuji touring bike tips the scale at 31 pounds and not near as
solid, durable or pretty.

Max,

As someone who purchased an Atlantis about a year ago, I would say that you
should absolutely go for it. I also pined after one for years, and I'll second
what Gordon stated and say that every time I go outside and see it I get a
smile on my face (and how can you put a price tag on that). I do agree it is a
very heavy bike, although I never really feel that or think about it unless I
am picking it up to get over an obstruction in the trail or end up in a
hike-a-bike situation. It is a joy to ride. If you do want something a bit
lighter and faster there are plenty of other Riv offerings that I am sure you
would also end up loving.

For years I have casually dreamed of owning an Atlantis. I commute 4 miles each

pretty casually. I'm not racing or doing endurance rides. I just like riding my
bike and I do it whenever I can.

I don't need the nicest bike in the world and have been fairly satisfied with
my 1988 Schwinn Cimarron that I've made a fair approximation of a poor man's
rivendell (somewhat out of date pic below!). However, I've always had the itch
to upgrade.

Recently, I received an unexpected influx of cash and want to spend it on
something fun. I'm wondering: how much will I noticeably appreciate the
difference an Atlantis would bring if I were to spend the money? I'm especially
interested in the input from those who have gone from the 80s era rigid MTB
with swept back bars that approximate a Riv (and Grant's ethos from
Bridgestone) to the real deal. Was it worth the money? Do you think you could
have gotten by on that 80s frame?

RE: [RBW] TPU inner tubes - Anyone using them?

2024-05-15 Thread Bernard Duhon
I had a series 3 flats in a short time with Tubolito. I almost never flat.
Company replaced 2 promptly
I can’t blame the tube for 1 of those flats as I picked up a rock puncture.
Also experienced valve leak that was fixed with Loctite.

Bought a patch kit to fix 2 tubes neither patches held.

$100.00 worth of tubes in the trash.

I am staying with latex for “unloaded” riding & butyl for loaded
touring/groceries etc. .

The expected maximum benefit for all the risks of disappointment in TPU tubes
is estimated in tests with measurement repeatability of +- 0.3 watts, on the
order of 2 watts per tire @50psi compared to a thin butyl tube. Expected
benefit compared to the lightweight butyl tube may be no more than 1 watt per
tire , about the energy loss of a tube rubbing inside your tire. (Latex tubes
are grippy.)

(I apologize that the rightmost original column with average energy losses in 3
fast 25mm tires @ 60psi would not fit in a screen shot. The lower the pressure,
the greater the expression of between-tube differences.)

Thanks Patrick! I saw a really nice bottom pull DA front mech used on eBay,

and it says it has a 16T capacity. Since I'm at 14T differential on my front

and I swapped that out for a 38/24 X something-like 13-26 9 speed (29 1/2"

The derailleurs were both LX of the period. When I converted the chainrings I
simply swapped the 46 outer for a (BBG) bashguard, swapped the 36 for a 38, and
adjusted the FD throw limit screw. I did not change the position of the FD on
the seat tube. After all, the FD shifted the 36/24 properly in that position,
and it's not surprising that it shifted the 38/24 properly in the same position.

Later I swapped the LX FD for an ancient Dura Ace FD which I did mount a bit
lower, but for the bottom of the cage to clear the chainstay as well as for the
lower edge of the cage to clear the (IIRC, 48 t-size) bash guard, the FD had to
be placed much where it would have been placed for a 46/36/24. The DA FD worked
just as well as the LX. Again, 38/24 X 15-24 (or close) drivetrain.

Nowadays, I have a 44/28 wide-range "subcompact" setup and the same DA FD
positioned high enough above the 44 to clear the 48-t-equivalent bashguard;
here too front shifts are just fine.

FWIW.

Matthews "road bike for dirt" with 42/28 (before I installed the 44) and Dura
Ace 740-something FD. There must be close to an inch of gap between the bottom
of the outer FD cage plate and the top of the teeth of the 42 t ring:

[RBW] lww rider pannier rack V. "brake level pannier rack

2024-04-22 Thread Bernard Duhon
Paved tour coming up .
I have always used low rider pannier rack for front panniers,
On my planned trip there won’t be more than 7 pounds in each front pannier.
I will have a rear load also (20pounds)
The rack I use for my handlebar bag is sturdy enough for this load. The bikes
is already set up for the handlebar bag rack. You know the drill ,fenders,
light etc.
Should I go thu the trouble of setting up the low mount rack.
Trail on bike is 56.
What is the handling difference between a front low mount and front high mount
panniers?

So what say ye?

Anyway, I did a very fast build on a Leo Roadini, last batch, and my best-ever

its long reach brakes feels less "roadie".

I can sympathize with the desire to run a Riv, but I'd also recommend casting a

Anything that can be set up with drop bars can probably also be set up with an

Sugino.
Was not happy with performance , ghosts shifts up when spinning & down when
stomping the pedals.
Switched up to a 34-11 Shimano
Nothing else changed
Seems to be working really well.

Previous threads and literature suggests that the closer the cogs in 10 & 11
speeds makes for better friction shifting.

What has been your experience?

[RBW] Different tire size front and rear.?

2024-03-30 Thread Bernard Duhon

Gang,
In my quest for fitting the largest tires my frames will take, I have put a
larger tire on the front 38 mm of my 700 C and 35mm in the rear.

On my 650 B conversion of a 700 C bike I have a 42 mm in the front and a 38 mm
in the rear.

The larger tire is 3.5 mm taller than the smaller tire on an unweighted bike
I suspect the lower tire pressures would result in an even smaller difference
when I ride the bike.

In any event I have noticed little difference.

Am I missing something here?

I feel ya on that one, Bernard. I too have a couple of wheelsets for my 26"
Atlantis and there's two different sets of tires I enjoy running on that bike.
Rims are different widths of course so it's a question of, which is the least
amount of hassle: swapping out tires on the one wheelset, or swapping wheels
and readjusting the brakes each time? My other issue is that one wheelset is
built up with a dyno hub and the other isn't, so I have to find a way to secure
the light wiring if I'm not using the dyno hub set. AGH! I'm not at the point
yet where I want to spring for an additional matching wheelset, though!

[RBW] Major v brake adjustment

2024-03-14 Thread Bernard Duhon
The wheels on the Waterford pict were purchased from Nashbar during a clearance
for $150.00 w/ shipping a long time ago. I use them to bomb around town etc &
swap out to my Dt Swiss for touring.
For a while I felt bad about buying & riding em. Now I am glad to be able to
“save” my real touring 26” wheels for when I need em.
I only wish the 2 rims were the same width, I have to reset the cable when I
switch them out.

I have adjusters at the lever & the Noodle. Any suggestions for major brake
adjustment

The first wheelset I built myself has Riv prototype hubs (Velocity made? Maybe

RE: [RBW] Re: Rim life - shimano vs. other brake pads?

2024-03-04 Thread Bernard Duhon

I have two sets of 26 inch rims:
one has dots periodically drilled into the surface. When the surface gets worn
down & the dots disappear and you should replace the rim.

I have another set which has a groove all the way around the rim in the center
of the breaking surface. When that grove disappears it's time to replace the
rim.

It was a practice common though not universal in mountain bike rims.

All rim brake manufacturers should do that.

Measuring wear with a set of calipers is imprecise at best.

Each rim manufacturer may have different standards as to how thin the breaking
surface can get before replacement. If they do there are a lot of “ safety
considerations ” baked in.

After 12,000 miles of few gravel & fewer hills the “dots” are still visible.>

At the risk of sending this thread on a tangent, I will pose a related question.

How do you measure rim wear due to braking? Anecdotally? Or do you put numbers
to it? How worn do you go before replacing a rim purely due to brake wear?

tried a Roadini (which I recently listed here and sold), but I think it was too
big for me. I never felt comfortable on it. Maybe I just needed it in the right
size.

I would like the bike to work well with drop bars because of the multiple hand
positions and they're just what I'm used to. I tried a bike with swept bars
recently, but found I wasn't comfortable on longer rides. And when riding on
streets with minimal shoulder width, I felt like I was going to catch the end

Rivendell's catalog that works well for road riding?

I'd appreciate any comments, especially if someone does this type of riding and
has tried several of these models. Thanks.

Wife & I did the Erie canal from
Lockport to Pittsford. What little gravel was fine stone, no mud. Not a lot
of flat hazards either. IT is much “tamer” then the GAP & C & O path.
There were skinny tire bikers who seemed to be doing fine.

Tho there is some lose gravel around the Fingerlakes

On my “fast” bike I ride 35mm 38mm on our local chip seal. That would be
adequate.

My touring bike has Marathon Supreme 1.6 inch is a great compromise on Size,
flat protection, comfort, weight & speed. That would be a good choice.
Also I got the 2 inch Supreme ( measures 47 mm on 18mm rim) I like it also.
Both available in 26 inch.

I'm curious to hear what drop bars folks are running on whatever Rivendell you

Also, if you've switched from a swept back bar to a drop bar on your Riv, what
adjustments to stem length did you need to make? I know this can be impacted by
the bar of choice, but just wanting to get a sense of how much of change you
experience in stem length.

Thanks!

I believe modern aluminum frames are more comfortable. Also now that we are
riding 32mm and larger tires at lower pressures whatever comfort disadvantage

With all respect to Mr. Weiss, the logical material for racy/roady types is
aluminum, not steel.
Nearly as light as carbon, significantly more robust, cheaper, and has the
modern look and feel.

It's a long way from a carbon Trek to a steel bike -- and whose steel bike do
you buy? It'd have to be be something completely different.
Whereas some road and gravel models from major manufacturers are available in
either carbon or aluminum.
That's what I read, anyway, in an article about the cost/benefit equation for
aluminum vs. carbon. It made sense to me.

But what do I know... I'm riding 80s aluminum AND 80s steel and enjoy both.

What is inside the pedal body? Are there needle bearings? Does a small

Sage Advice!

Why am I trying to keep 25 +year-old peddle rolling?

I will not purchase somebody else's 25-year-old peddle in the hopes that it's a
better condition than mine & to try and rebuild it.

In the words of a Bruce Cockburn song “it's a sin to try and make things last
forever”

I'll either by the A520s preferably the A600 both rare and a600 I found is five
times the price of the A520.

Like a lot of things, put it in writing and you see it, the decision becomes
obvious.

That's what's so good about user groups.

That is particularly true where I live. Rivendell oriented cyclists are
lone-rangers!

Pedal clicking is usually in the big bushings or wear in the shaft itself.
You'll note rebuilds kits include these two items, plus the bearings.
Found this on ebay - price is right if it matches your pedal.

of bearings ever being removed. Even those objects that are designed to have
replaceable bearings, it typically requires a special tool.

So, for your ~30 year old Onza pedals, long out of production, you'll need to
figure it out for yourself or hire somebody who has already figured it out.
Like, if there is such a thing as a tiny bearing puller, and it cost $100,
would you buy that tool? Have you fully removed the spindle and confirmed the
play is in bearings? Some pedals have plastic bushings instead of bearings at
the outside end. Do you have those? Bushings are relatively straightforward
to remanufacture, in a hobbyist machine shop.
*if you decide you can live with it, it may get worse, but there's little
chance of damaging anything else, and the pedals won't fly apart.

I recommend using the A600 if you can find them, because (similar to most road
pedals) they return to the upright position with the pedal perpendicular to the
ground, so you can clip in without looking. The ES600 spins 360, so the pedal
can be upside down or any which way when you go to clip back in, so you might
need to rotate the pedal 180 degrees into the correct position when you clip in.

With that said, I still chose the ES600 when I replaced my Look Keo pedals, so
I can walk around more comfortably and can live with the extra effort when I
clip in.

Thank you for the recommendation
Jan Heine used the a600s. The difference is the ES600 sawed off a few
millimeters on the back of the pedal. That shrinks your foot platform.
do you know if there were any other "improvements "between the A600 and the
Es600

Thank you for reminding me of these because I had forgotten. I'll try and find
a new old stock version of the A600
only be using this on pavement, gravel & forest road.

If you're not going to do serious single track I highly recommend the PD-ES600.
https://blog.piaw.net/2022/10/review-shimano-pd-es600.html

My friends were really skeptical that it would make any difference compared to
the venerable and well respected (deservedly so) M520s, but the wings and wider
platform definitely make these pedals feel much better connected than the
M520s, and are the first pedals I've tried that I consider a significant
improvement over the M520s. My biggest issue with them is that you have to
mount them with an allen wrench instead of having wrench flats. Beware though,
they're singled sided (which is what makes the connection feel so nice --- the
design wouldn't have worked with a double-sided pedal, I don't think)! But for
paved riding they're really awesome.

@Bernard -

I am sorry that my jacket is too big for you. For me, if I would only be able
to wear a long sleeve mid weight merino wool pull over and a long sleeve wool
jersey underneath the coat, nothing more.

I do not know the answer to your question about my jacket's waterproofing
compared to the benchmark of ShowersPass's waterproofing, because I have not
worn the jacket outside in the rain. However, from the description of the
jacket in its' waterproof qualities, details and seeing how the jacket is
constructed, I would absolutely say that it is a very quality and durable
jacket for cycling in comparison to a ShowersPass Elite 2.1 jacket I had once
owned before.

When you wear a rain jacket for cycling, do you layer underneath ?

What size do you normally wear ?

I want to sell it with the matching helmet cover that is offered with the

How about $65.00, shipped ?

I am new to the list and enjoy the tales & profit from the advice.

On the touring tire subject I was over thinking it. Just cause I have a great
set up my touring bike (26 inch Marathon Supremes) Doesn't mean the
Gravelkings sitting in the garage won't do just fine and fresh tires are always
a good idea.

Happy riding

No retention at all for me for that last 20 some years. Since my feet are
positioned more midfoot and the pedals have good pins to grip Altra Lone
Peaks(w/150mm cranks), I have no need for anything else. I have no pins on the
other side and the even then my feet stay in place from feel. .Since moving my
saddle all the way forward I find my pedaling has become even more
effective/efficient. Torque + pedal speed = vroom sensation = FUN ! I think
I'm going to get a zero setback post to try as I'm close to the limit on the
Cobb saddle with a Ritchey 25mm setback post. As the foot is placed more
midfoot, I feel much more "planted" to the cranks from my trunk/core. Now that
I'm going more forward of the BB, I find an aero position more comfortable, and
now feet are more angled forward/down than before. Picture the classic
Roadrunner cartoon where at full speed and side angle, the RR's head is forward
of the feet, the entire body is leaning forward, and the RR is just chillin'
doing it. The more forward I am of the BB, I'm pushing more back with my entire
body to the wheel/chainstays, rather than pushing down or forward with my body
further back of the BB. It's also less strenuous on everything, go figure. So
now I'm in complete rethink of frame design, I could use a much steeper seat
tube angle, 73.5-74 ish. This isn't stuff anyone can teach, other than
encouraging the exploration/creativity to find your way as to what works and
what doesn't.

At some point I ditched the Time for SPD’s and used those on all bikes for
years. When I got my Riv custom in 2000 I went in on the retro thing and put
clips and straps on it but that didn’t last long and the Riv soon got SPD’s as

Quite a few years back I picked up a Brompton and found the flat, no retention
pedals on it didn’t feel weird and I did not miss having retention. Since then
I have most of my bikes set up with flat pedals with pins. I still have my “go
fast” bike set up with SPD’s and I do put those on my off-road bike when I plan
to do more technical trails. But most off-road rides I just used flats.

I really like not having to change into different shoes when I ride. Most of my
riding is commuting/errands so I am not getting “kitted up” for those rides.
Since I’m not changing into a riding outfit it makes sense to not have to
change shoes as well.

Cages & straps in the 70’s. Turned into an occasional cyclists till early
90’s. When I returned, all the “serious” cyclist had Look’s. I couldn’t go

inefficient touring shoes. My commuter & errand bike had flat pedals, on & off
with cages/straps. Finally ditched cages 5 or 6 years ago.
I decided to go flat (Lambda, took em off unused wife’s bike) for a weeklong
tour on my Waterford “Atlantis” build. With spd’s the ball of your foot is on
top of pedal spindle. Flat, the arch of your foot is on top of the spindle.
Less leg extension, so lower your saddle, there is more toe overlap and finally
slightly different muscles are used. I trained with the same set up on my
road bike, when riding with the ‘‘fast” group. Lo & behold just as efficient.
I won’t ditch my spd shoes & pedals. I got em I’ll use em.

As always, I'm learning lots from the conversation! Thank you, always a
pleasure.

To add my non-technical two cents:

I used to ride with toe clips/leather straps. They have (probably) saved my
life...and also caused me harm. Riding my second-hand Raleigh Gran Sport fast
down a steep grade in the southern Alps (NZ), I hit a big pothole with my front
tire. I was thrown off my seat and over the handlebars...held back by the one
foot that remained in a toe clip. So thankful for that! On the other hand, one
day back in Calif., starting off uphill, I ungracefully keeled over and
fractured my elbow. Then had to drive a stick-shift car to the hospital for
x-rays...

My (still new-ish) Clem is my first bike without pedal retention and I feel
kind of like a kid again, just having fun. But I can't say I don't sometimes
think of 531 Reynolds and the things that go with it!

Baking soda and water does the trick on mirrors! My German mirror is the best

I have, they suck. They are supposed to be a plug and play install, no toe-in.
They accomplish the desired purpose of not having to deflate the tire to remove
the wheel, but I couldn't get them to not squeal or vibrate to the point that
my headlight was cutting out. I tried sanding them, and even gently took some
sandpaper to my brake track, which worked for about five brakings then it went
right back to squealing like a banshee. Frustratingly just put my stock pads
back on and deal with letting out air when the wheel needs to be removed.

Subject: [RBW] How do you fix your leather saddle creaks and squeaks?

At some point this week, my new (to me) Atlantis developed a creak whenever I
pedaled. While standing and cranking, nothing... so saddle or seatpost, right?
The Brooks B17 I have on it is very old and broken in, and it has never creaked
before, but I decided to take it off, greased the rails, a few drops of
Tenacious Oil on the metal bits, cleaned and greased the seatpost and clamp,
cleaned out the seat tube with this long brush that I have (think, long
flexible bottle brush). Took it for a test ride, and the creak was still there.

So, now I proceed to deep dive into this. Remove and regrease the pedals.
Pulled cranks and cleaned the chainrings. Replaced the rusty chainring bolts.
Greased spindles and crank bolts. I didn't really want to remove the BB - even
though that was a likely culprit - but I left it alone. New chain installed.
Tightened fender I have had this problem stays. Checked cable housing and
stops. Greased QR skewers. Test ride again. Creak still there, and maybe worse.
Damn it! Why didn't I just pull the BB while I had all that disassem

bled??

After all this, I suddenly remembered that I had an extra saddle in my parts
bin. I felt stupid for not putting this saddle on first thing to test my
initial theory. Sure enough, test ride proved NO CREAKING. A-ha! I'm an idiot.

So, now to go full-on assault with this saddle creak. I flipped it over and
dabbed globs of Obenauf's around all the places where the metal undercarraige
meets the leather. Then, I took a heat gun (on low setting) and melted the
Obenauf's to let it ooze down into all those nooks and crannies. I've never
tried this approach before, but it seemed like an idea that could possibly work
well - for a while at least. Sure enough, it took care of the creak. We'll see
how long it holds up.

Do you have a good creak, or creaky saddle story? How did you take care of it?

RE: [RBW] Rear rack for sport touring bike

2023-10-08 Thread Bernard Duhon

Thanks I am looking for a rack that allows a lower mounting that I can also use
on my “real” touring bike with heavier loads. Tubus has several models I am
evaluating.

The Tubus Fly at 420 grams and rated for 18 kg. I used them for years with no
problems under 30 to 40 lb rear loads on road bikes.

Hey All,

I wanted to share a special ride report from this past Saturday.

Originally, my wife and I planned to hop on BART from West Oakland and travel
to Walnut Creek to visit the Riv HQ, followed by a quick ride around Shell
Ridge. I've been to the showroom a handful of times to pick some odds and ends,
but my wife has never been.

She currently rides a Clem H in "Barf Green" as she calls it (ha!) that I
sourced for her from a fellow bay area Riv rider. It's an amazing bike, but as
she didn't pick it, it's never truly been hers. I was excited for her to try
out a few bikes and finally find her one true steed.

We arrived to find Grant in the showroom, helping another person find their PBH
size. Before long, my Wife and Grant were deep in conversation about what type
of bike she was looking for, and she hopped on a Platypus, Homer (the new gold
ones look amazing in person btw), Proto Charlie, amongst others. She
immediately fell in love with the Homer and was zipping around the compound
with a huge smile on her face. While she did that, I nerded out with James,
checking out his Homer and Atlantis.

Intermittently, Grant, James, and Riv Friend Dan, gushed about the color of her
frame, how unique the color was and how beautiful it was in the light (all
things I also thought when I scored the bike for her). For context, my wife is
obsessed with getting a yellow or orange bike, and nothing else will please her
:) Grant conceded to her that yes, one should have a bike in a color that makes
them love it, and so it in was in friendly jest that for the rest of our time
together Grant kept talking up her "barf green" Clem. I thought it was
hilarious.

After an hour or so, we said that we'd come back another day to hammer out the
details on a build, and that we were off to Shell Ridge to ride some trails. I
confessed that we'd never been out there before and James let me take a photo
of a map they had on hand to get there.

We set off, only to find both Grant (on his light blue Clem) and Dan (on his
army green Gus) waiting near the start of the trailhead!

They graciously offered to show us around (though were careful to give us the
option to get a few pointers and continue on with our date ride). Obviously, we
were more that elated to have Grant and Dan lead us on our first ride in Riv's
backyard. How cool is that??

So we were off! Grant and Dan tested our chops a bit through some light trails,
and eventually we came up to a fork in the road. Grant and Dan gave each other
a look and after a moment Grant said "well, you two look like you can handle
yourselves, so let's try some singletrack, it'll be fun!"

Full disclosure: my Wife and I are pretty avid cyclists, though we spend most
of our time on easier fire trails and pavement in the urban jungle of Oakland.
So... our experience on singletrack and trails in general isn't the greatest.
But when Grant says ride, you most certainly follow. I also felt comfortable
knowing we had them around. I must also admit that I've never really taken my
Clem L on this kind of terrain, so there was a lot of learning to do.

What followed was an amazing jaunt around Shell Ridge. I fell at least twice,
but there was no shame to be had. Dan shared that on his first ride with Grant
in Shell Ridge, he fell off his bike and slid 50ft down the side of a hill
which scored some laughs all around.

As we went along, both Dan and Grant gave me some tips on how to ride the
terrain and by the second half I was having the time of my life. The biggest
thing I learned was to trust the long-wheel base, and pedal, pedal, pedal. It
took a bit of courage to do, but once I got the hang of it I was amazed at how,
yes, you really can pedal through those moments of doubt and come away smiling.
I'll never forget it. I was also in awe of how skillfully both Grant and Dan
rode the terrain, they're incredibly skillful but are never in your face about
it.

Along the way, we had great conversations about not just bikes, but life. I
asked Grant if he was going to celebrate Riv's 30th anniversary next year to
which he yelled "NO!" (though I suspect people will celebrate him and the team
anyway) and in turn, he asked us about our lives, our interests, our hobbies,
etc. It was great to hear about his philosophy on life, on bikes and everything
in between. We joked about

RE: [RBW] PDW Safety Tabs

2023-09-27 Thread Bernard Duhon

I was saved on a communte by SKS “Breakaway” fenders. I somehow kicked up a
small log into my rear wheel. & came to a controled stop. Didn’t even break a
spoke.

So when I went to aluminum fenders for looks I got these and tabs. They make
plenty of sense.

BTW if you cut your fender stays too short these make up the difference.

Not that I would ever do such a thing

Subject: [RBW] PDW Safety Tabs

As a semi-fanatical fender freak (aluminum please!) who advocates their use for
nearly any and all bikes, I feel obliged to share that after rolling over
several thousand miles of gravel forest service roads my tire kicked an
unidentified object up into the front fender while at speed. It was probably a
short but stout stick.

When I installed a set of PDW Safety Tabs on my Ritchey a few months ago I
figured they worked as a sacrificial break away item in the event that an
object wedges between the tire and the fender. What I discovered is that they
employ a barbed plastic head that pops free of the metal tab they are inserted
into. Indeed, I heard a loud POP when this occurred - followed by the sound of
the fender rubbing as it dangled from the opposite, still intact stay. After
straightening the slightly bent stay I was able to pop the tab back together
and continue my ride.

Would I have been launched over the bars by a seized front wheel had I not
installed the safety tabs? I don't know...and it's not a thing I care to
experiment with.

Of course, SKS fenders come standard with safety mounting tabs - but for anyone
running metal fenders that lack a safety tab, I can attest they are well worth
the few dollars they cost.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this sort of
experience.[cid:image001.jpg@01D9E891.FBA53330]

Do you have one of the covers for the passengers? I’ve seen some with these and
it seems like a really neat option. I’ve been considering a cargo bike but I’m
worried about the size of the bike making it tricky to park. I already have
trouble navigating my Gus through the office elevator when I ride it to work.

You’re not really supposed to mount car seats to those trailers, but I was able
to fabricate a mount that let the base mount the same way it does in the car,
allowing the carrier to clip in the same way as it would in the car. Combined
with the “roll cage” design of the trailer, I felt comfortable using it for
quick rides to the neighborhood park, less than a mile away.

The conventional wisdom I’ve heard is that you need to wait until they can hold
their head up well with their helmet on. That was technically 7 months for us,
but I waited until he was a little bigger and the helmet gift him better.

I don't think I've ever gotten more than 1500 miles out of a set of
Extralights. By the that time the rear tire is usually slick and both tires
have several tread slashes in them.

I've had a lot of luck with the Barlow Passes (running tubeless) in standard
