[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Bruce Byker James
I was in a similar situation to you not long ago. I had a heavily
Rivendell-influenced Fuji touring and a Kona Smoke. Last summer I was able
to stop by Rivendell and ride a Clem and an Appaloosa. I loved them both
about the same, except that I'm not crazy about the look of the step-thru
Clem. I get that it's super practical, but I wanted something I would also
love to look at. I lock up my bike in the city a decent amount, so it
couldn't be too flashy. I had some unexpected money, but not very much, so
the Appaloosa was out of range. I started paying close attention to the
used market, came across a Clem H in my size and purchased it in March. I
LOVE it!

Without the unexpected money, I definitely would have kept enjoying the
bikes I already had, but the Clem leveled-up my bicycle riding joy and so
far it's made me spend more time riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rack(s) for Clem

2024-04-19 Thread Bruce Byker James
I have the Axiom Journey on my Clem. I only had to spread the legs a little
to get them on the outside of the seat stay bosses, but I like that
suggestion to put them on the inside. It's really sturdy, especially on the
Clem. I've used it for probably 50 lb. of groceries pretty easily.

If I were buying this rack again, I noticed they now make one with the
spring on top:

Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-13 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Hi Ryan:I share your inclinations on RBW designs. My 1st Riv was a Rambouillet in 2006. The Ram was conceived of as a successor to the Long Low and mine continues to be a great riding bike.  I next got a Saluki but decided it really wasn’t for me and re-sold it. My 3rd Riv was a Road prototype and I still have that one also. It is a regular Waterford Road front geometry with a level TT and standard HT mated to a slack angle / longer chainstay GP style rear layout and it rides great. Has the neat original Sachs designed lugs and Reynolds 753 frame set. It’s plenty light and fast but comfortable too.  BruceSent from my iPadOn Nov 13, 2022, at 11:34 AM, Ryan wrote:Definitely proto-Riv...somewhere around Ted Durant and Mr. Moore ...1993 X0-1 that I still have, 1997 A/R and 2001 LongLow influenced Curt Goodrich Road...but veering into swoopy with 2016 custom mixte which I ordered with less ornate lugs than the Glorius and Wilbury models.I get why Riv moved to TIG-welding for Clems and Roadinis ...but my heart is firmly attached to lugs, although...if I was more of a utility cyclist , I'd definitely consider one of the Clems. But, shopping is within walking distance so a Clem is not really required. I do applaud Grant's move to keep the durability and good design hallmarks of Rivendell while making them  more affordable, however.  Before I retired my 73/74 single-speed Peugeot PX-10 or my X0-1 were my daily commuters...so to speak to the visit https://groups.google.com/d/msgid/rbw-owners-bunch/40dd5cf0-9772-41c7-9a3e-89925a958892n%40googlegroups.com.

Re: [RBW] 26” to 650c on Rambouillet

2022-06-15 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Patrick:
I took the original comment on the bar as a positive. The angled inverted
mustache bars are nice for a senior citizen back. The Walnut studio grip has
held up well. As to other observation of “so many things wrong,” that seems to
violate the list rules of etiquette. I’ll leave it to the moderator to opine
there. The bike has about 17k miles on it and most have been really nice ones.

My point was just to share that the wheel size works if you need it. While 26”
tires are around in the 28 - 32 size this bike was made for, road wheels (other
than custom builds) are getting scarcer in that size. Brake bridge location
was at times an issue on this model. I’m not extolling it as the next big thing.

I use Banjo Bros bags on mine. Carradice did not survive long in strong sun.
The RBW kevens bag did better but not great. Black Rose gave good service and
looked nice but holds too little. Ymmv

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Sackville Trunksack Small grey

2022-04-24 Thread Bruce Smitham
For sale is a new Rivendell Sackville Trunksack Small grey that I recently
purchased from Alex Wirth for $115. Perfect bag but unfortunately it just
doesn't match my other bikepacking style bags. Looking to get $105 plus $10
shipping which is the same amount I paid. So $115 shipped CONUS. Thanks,
Bruce in San Diego

Sachs designed the lugs used on the earliest models. He didn’t make them or
any frames. Waterford was the earliest vendor and as others have noted, a few
other small builders have helped over the years, Nobilette most recently. Toyo
did several frame models for a period of about 5 years, and Panasonic had one
too. Panasonic and Urema did painting in Japan. Maxway in Taiwan has been a
major supplier of late.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who likes the original Atlantis?

2021-08-05 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Doing some interwebs reading over a lunchtime sandwich, it seems most people
side with Bill. Lugs are apparently stronger, and possibly prettier, and they
are easier to do a tube replacement with, but tube size, frame geometry, wall
thickness and tube alloy are more where the stiffness enters in. YMMV

Re: [RBW] Re: FS - Rivendell Rambouillet

2021-07-07 Thread Bruce Herbitter
The green was my favorite color, but only the blue was made in the smaller
sizes I need. I still have my first year Riv Road. (The Road has a level TT,
the Road Standard has an upslope TT.). It is a wonderful bike and gets most of
the miles. I converted it to 650B so I can get 38 mm tires in. It is quicker
handling than the Ram is and I truly enjoy whichever one I am on. Congrats on
your acquisition. I know whoever gets the green Ram in this original thread
is going to love it too.

I’m also a fan of earlier Riv ride and handling. I have a ‘95 Waterford made
pre production sample for the road. It has lovely French curve forks of 531
while the frame is 753. Quick Waterford steering geometry and slack seat tube
and long chain stay comfy Riv ride. It’s still my main bike.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

I ordered wheels with Velocity A23 rims for my Rivendell Road from Universal
Cycles. They were in stock and and my custom spec order took about a week to
lace up and ship to me.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-04-01 Thread Bruce Herbitter
There is always a buzz of excitement when RBW introduces some new thing. Models
come and go regularly. As GP notes, Platypus is the 4th Mixte model they’ve
rolled out. (Wilbury/Glorius, Betty Foy/Yves Gomez, Cheviot are the others).
When the idea of extending the top tube as chain stays or adding stays to a
middle tube (think Hunqapillar) was first suggested, RBW wasn’t sure if they
liked it and asked for opinion. I think the decision to adopt it has resulted
in a string of nice looking frames. Really though, ALL their frames have been
nice looking and nice riding too. Looks like they’re sold out of all models of
their bikes at the moment.

The A23 is narrow for a 55 to sit well, I think. It’s also shallow compared to
the cliffhanger. The Atlas might actually be one for you to consider with 55

I did the 3 tubes with clear coat for $50 less 10% coupon. There were several
other options but I didn't need all the extra gloves/sandpaper/etc. Some of the
other oranges looked a little closer on the ap but the c5 was recommended. When
it arrives I'll repost so all of the other creamsicle Rams can get their orange
on.

2020-06-10 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Nifty summary Edwin, missing the Road and Road Standard bikes of ‘94-98. Long
time RBW followers know that if you see something you like, buy it. EVERYTHING
gets replaced after a short while due to a number of constraints. Some long
term projects like Atlantis keep the name but the new version is not like the
former one. Similar for clothes, saddles, parts, etc.

[RBW] Re: In Praise of the Roadini

2020-04-29 Thread Bruce Smitham
I just pre-ordered a 54cm Orange Roadini from Rivendell. I've had only 1
bike for the last 3 years (Salsa Fargo Ti with Jones bars and Schwalbe
G-One 27.5 x 2.8 tires) 1 x 11 XT drivetrain and dropper post. I can ride
it all day long in any terrain and love it. So this is a big deal for me. I
looked at the Crust Bombora and BMC Road+ but ultimately decided on a Riv.
Feels good and looking forward to building it up when it arrives.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Timeline

2020-04-10 Thread Bruce Herbitter
There are still enough old timers around to put that together, I’m sure. What
it it probably show is that if you see a Rivendell bike you like, it’s better
to scrape the money together and get one sooner rather than later. Models come
and models go based on multiple factors.

I look at the total # of resolved cases (either died or recovered) which gives a mortality rate currently around 10%. About that same as SARS which is also a Corona Virus but less contagious. Expectation is that 40% - 70% of the US population will get it at some point.  Unfortunately, we have no idea how accurate any of the data is right now.  Kind of sobering.  (8,411 deaths and 84,121 recoveries as I type this) Bruce Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Nick PayneSent: Wednesday, March 18, 2020 10:52 PMTo: RBW Owners BunchSubject: [RBW] Re: Group Riding / New Covid-19 World Present US population ~330 million. On Johns Hopkins figures (https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6) so far from COVID-19 there are ~8800 deaths from 218000 cases - that's about 4% death rate. If half the US population gets this in the next 12 months, which is a reasonable ballpark figure given that there is no immunity and no vaccine, even if we say that the death rate is really only 2%, because a lot of mild cases have been missed, you still have 330,000,000 / 2 * 0.02 = 3.3 million deaths... Re: [RBW] Re: 650b clearance on Rambouillet?

2020-02-26 Thread Bruce Herbitter
I’ve converted all my 700c bikes to 650B. 38 mm seems the sweet spot for tire
size. I can run Grand Bois or Pari Motos or Gravel Kings and play with pressure
to suit the route. The MaFac Pro centerpulls are really strong brakes and I
like them. Tektros with good pads are okay, just not as good. Just for fun, I
tried 584 wheels with the pads all the way down and they work, and you can get
fat tires, but the handling suffers so I went back to 650B. My 52 cm Ram has
2 wheel sets and one runs the stock 32 mm tires and the other Pasela 38s. I
like the 32s better.

I rode our December Populaire (100KM) Saturday on my ‘95 Riv Road. One of the
tricks I used to get the weight to 18.5 lbs is these very light pedals from JG
Bike. I really like them. Plenty of weight distribution, good grip without
pointy spikes messing up shoes, and very light. They have a titanium spindle
and thin aluminum platform. And CHEAP too. I want to buy several for my other
bikes but I can’t justify the waste of the pedals already on them. (V-O and
MKS).

Re: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell frame would you resurrect?

2019-10-19 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Always, always, always: with Rivendell, if you see something you want, get it
now. Chances are it won’t be there later. Not to say there won’t be other great
stuff, but nothing stays the same at RBW. GP’s recent blog talks about what he
thought he knew when he started out at RBW vs what he now knows to be true
regarding bike design. Some of us, like me for instance, prefer that old stuff.
Others prefer the new. Holds true for bags, clothes, too.

Very nice bike Jeremy. One the last ones made quite possibly. I ended up
repainting my blue one in amber gold, but that green was a serious contender.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Repair & Repaint

2019-03-08 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Thanks all for the kind words. GP told me it was very repairable and that was
the case. The cost to keep it on the road is way less than a new frame and you
can’t get those lugs anymore. It was my #1 ride before the tube crack (
although I’ve had the Ram longer so it has more overall miles) and I’m
interested to see how it will feel in the new set up. For those scoring at
home, the main club ride bike is now the Waterford RS-12 bought here last July,
then a Nashbar Mark III, named Ferrous Bueller which is my brevet bike set up
with lights and most of the parts which came on a Saluki I once had. The Ram is
too pretty to sweat on, so runs to the vet for pet insulin refills or around
town and Sunday social rides are its use now.

Beautiful bike. The solid rear dropout differs from the later Rams which have
a window and the lug set is pointed instead of rounded as on later bikes. Ooh
that color!

Thanks Rich. This is a 52cm frame and this size in a Ram came in 559 (26”)
