[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-27 Thread Clayton.sf
My experience is different. For me both Clem L and Cheviot are similar
regarding effort to speed ratio. I have not found the Cheviot any speedier
than the Clem. The Clem does better in rough stuff and is an equal on the
road. Cheviot is easier to mount and dismount with load. Both are NOT bikes
I would take on unloaded "spirited" rides. Sure, I have done 100k ride on
the Cheviot just because, but my 100k times on my Boulder or Blackmountain
are significantly faster.

Redwing is an overpriced hipster boot with an amazing history these days.
Beckhams and Iron Rangers are perfect for the lumbersexual look and a 10
minute, dry weather walk to the next artisanal coffee roastery ;-). Very
pretty, but for actual boot use you can do better with spending less. For any
real hiking I wear low top trail runners and redbacks for anything that needs
more debris blocking and a tad more protection.

Personally I like Redbacks over either rossi or blunnies (had them all). I

Fantastic boots, but very different from the original requirements of the

2020-02-19 Thread Clayton.sf
Getting a longer binder bolt and using a Mafac hanger might be another
solution as it bolts to the outside rather than into the slot. Like this
one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/291709320587.

Or get a longer bold that sticks our a little and bolt the Nitto hanger to
the side. This will put the brake cable at an angle but depending on frame
side it might not matter much.

Personally, I'd just get a new frame.

2020-01-06 Thread Clayton.sf
Some *subjective *counterpoints.

Owned an MIT Atlantis, Cheviot and still own a Clem H.

All of the above bikes would be my last choice for "spirited" unloaded
climbing when choosing from my stable.

My Boulder, Black Mountain Cyles, Hampsten, and Jones all climb with less
perceived exertion on my part and at a higher average speed.

It is not that the Riv models above are bad climbers but they do require
more effort (for me) for the same speed.
To me they are great loaded multi-purpose bike but they are not (to me)
"go-fast" bikes.

On the flipside the Boulder, BMC, and Hampsten would all be inferior
heavily loaded.

The Quickbeam on the other hand never felt like it was holding me back on
hills.

[RBW] Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-05 Thread Clayton.sf
I think the "where" of length matters. Very long chainstays are not something I
like offroad as it prevents the front wheel to be lifted which can be
problematic and unfun. My Jones plus LWB is a fantastic offroad bike with a
long wheelbase, the front wheel can still easily be lifted. Taking a Cheviot or
Clem on trails works too but not nearly as well due to the long stays that make
lifting the front a chore at best.
Long stays do indeed smooth out the ride but if they are so long that they make
the bike suitable only for smoother trails where that smoothness is less needed
then what is the point?
Longer front center pkus puffy tires with short stem makes a lot more sense for
offroad LWB bikes according to me.

[RBW] Re: Adding Seatpost QR to Riv

2019-10-23 Thread Clayton.sf
Nah. Those things don't work. I use to tie some string between saddle rails and
seat stays. That made it really easy to find the right height fast after having
lowered the post. But then I got lazy and just high-posted it. Now the mtb has
a dropper and I use it all the time, so I am thinking of giving the manual
dropper another try.

[RBW] Adding Seatpost QR to Riv

2019-10-23 Thread Clayton.sf
Hi All,

Has anyone successfully added a Quick Release Seatpost binder to a
Rivendell frame?

I feel like I know what I need in general. QR that is long/short enough
that mates with the nut on the other side and some spacers/washers that fit
into the space where the hex bolt head usually sits. What I don't (yet)
know is what exactly I should use. If anyone has setup that they like
particularly well let me know. It will likely save me some trial and error.

[RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-15 Thread Clayton.sf
I feel like slippage has little to do with bar weight or stem length.
If you want less slip then you need to increase friction between stem and bar.
A larger diameter bar/stem interface (31.8mm or 35mm) accomplishes this most
elegantly. Friction paste and torque are other means. More exotic solutions are
bullmoose style stems (Nitto makes some) that clamp bars in two instead of one
area.

When I ride the bike, boscos and Albas and bullhorns and anything else with

He did mention he is willing to spend more.

I suggest building your own wheels to save on labor and learn a valuable
skill. It is not hard to do and you can get the tools for less than what a
build will cost these days.

I recommend not using Shimano hubs in the rear; especially not the current
XT version. I have had two of their recent XT freehubs seize up turning the
bike into a fixed wheel. First time was coming down a hill. Only fast
pedaling and quick reaction saved the bike and myself from incurring major
damage. Never had an issue with White and Schmidt hubs. Paul and DT in 350
or 240 are fantastic too, but Paul does not make a rear cassette hub and DT
no longer makes non-disc 135 hubs. Phil cassette hubs have had their share
of issues so I'd pass on them unless you are building a single speed or
fixed gear. The fixed/ss hubs they make are amazing.

Been riding 165s on my SS mtb for years and never felt like I was lacking

[RBW] Re: Hollowtech Homer

2019-09-25 Thread Clayton.sf
Regarding crank length - I prefer them 165-170. Tried 175 but liked them
less. Some of it may be what I am used to, although I have zero issues
switching back and forth from 165 to 170. I am 6' tall and of average
proportion.

Unlike Rivendell, I feel like crank length is a matter of personal
preference rather than rider height although rider height is likely a good
starting point. Riding terrain, riding style, and bike matters more than
rider height IMO. Shorter will always give more relative ground clearance.

[RBW] Hollowtech Homer

2019-09-24 Thread Clayton.sf
I am all for 1x, hollow tech (or similar), 165-170 cranks, 1 speeds or 12
speeds or any in between speeds, threadless headsets and stems, non-leather
saddles, synthetic grips and tape, indexing or friction, and whatever trail on
any of my bikes including rivs. That stuff all works wonderfully and lasts just
fine, despite all the armchair handwringing.

[RBW] Re: Paul motolite reviews?

2019-05-16 Thread Clayton.sf
I think this may also have something to do with the levers I used (Tektro
linear drop levers), but the "grabbyness" made them almost scary offroad
when I needed to slow down a little but not stop. You hit a bump which
caused hands squeezing the lever just a tad more and the wheels would
temporarily lock up. Never crashed because of it but did switch back to
cantis after a few sketchy incidents. I really like the mini motos which
exhibit none of the "on/off" characteristics for me but offer excellent
power when needed and plenty of modulations to control speed (tire choice
is more limited though). Again, my experience with the Motolites may have
been lever related and could likely be further changed with different pads
(I used the stock thinlines).

[RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2019-01-18 Thread Clayton.sf
I will coming from Healdsburg north of SR. My two plans are as follows:

1. Dry plan: show up at around noon, ride Annadel until dusk or until my
legs quit (whichever comes first), then head over for dinner and camping.
This version will likely have me driving down with a bunch of local
firewood and other camp favorites. Can easily pickup 4 more people in the
north bay too so if anyone wants a ride down let me know.

2. Wet weather: Ride bike down from Healdsburg around 11am with a bunch of
scenic detours but sparing the trails at Annadel to not cause undue damage.
Happy to bike down with anyone that wants to join the fun or meet up en
route.

Both options will regroup at key points so no one gets lost or left behind.

Best,
Clayton Scott

2019-01-18 Thread Clayton.sf
For fancier lighter tents check out tarptent.com. I have their contrail and
it is a great tent. You will have seam seal it yourself and supply a tyvek
ground sheet.

Hammock camping is well worth looking into too. If permitted and suitable
for the environment I prefer the hammock, but still use the tent quite a
bit since trees are not everywhere and some campsites forbid them. In
general though being above the dirt and wet is more pleasant than on the
dirt and wet.

Other drawbacks of the hammock are setup time takes longer to get it
perfect. More bulk for similar warmth. A pain in the butt to share with
someone. Learning curve. Research time wasted ;-).

In the end, having both is nice. If I had to go with just one I would go
with a tent, but sleep much better in a hammock.

IN ADDITION AND ONLY SOMEWHAT RELATED: for those of you who own tarps -
bring them. We had one rainy year and having tarps to string over the
"communal area" immensely improved the experience. I will bring a 6'X8' and
cord, but more is always better.

[RBW] 650b vs 700c wide tite thoughts needed.

2018-06-20 Thread Clayton.sf
I personally like wider tires on 700c best. 44+ on 700c is preferred. For me
the whole perfect handling based on rim size to tire width does not register. I
like the feel of a large wheel and tire. I am also not sold on low trail geo
either. Especially for not for mixed terrain riding. It is to me more about
personal preference rather than alleged science. Wheel size relative to frame
size/requirements makes more sense to me.

regarding fatter 650b vs skinnier 700c that choice depends on intended
application application.

2018-06-19 Thread Clayton.sf
This to me is the main advantage of 31.8 diameter clamps. More surface, more
friction, less chance of rotating. Almost all bigger sweep bars in 26mm and
25.4mm have rotated for me, but in 31.8mm they stay put.

Adding some carbon friction paste helps though.

[RBW] Randonneuring on Rivendells

2018-06-18 Thread Clayton.sf
Done brevets on my Quickbeam in various configurations. basket, bags, fixed and
SS. In my experience comfort is the most important thing since time limits are
generous. The catch is that comfortable varies quite a bit from 3 to 300
miles. Full upright is nice for a few miles, but will be very uncomfortable for
120 miles for me. Both battery and dybamo lights work.

Experimentation is key and what works for me will maybe not work for the next
person. In the end you won't know what works for a 300k unless you do a 300k.
Best advice is to just start and see how it goes. worst case scenario you will
DNF, so what? You will learn something anyway.

[RBW] Cracking paint or (gulp) cracking frame?

2018-06-14 Thread Clayton.sf
Not saying it can't happen but a horizontal crack would be odd. If it was me
I'd sand off the paint and see how it looks underneath though

I believe most of them are shot with film. Could be wrong though.

[RBW] Re: Flat Bottom Backpack

2018-06-03 Thread Clayton.sf
another backpack which is a personal favorite of mine is the Goruck GR1. While
the Goruck ethos is a little different from mine the GR1 is my favorite
everyday bag ever. Pricey, but their lifetime warranty is for real. I highly
recommend it and if you don't like it or will go for close to the same on eBay.
