Re: [RBW] Re: aghast by Rivendells aeropressing technique.
Bobby, I too was somewhat frustrated by the precision of several of the methods. The less precise method I use that works fine is an inverted one (I was ok with the method in the aeropress instructions but it uses a lot of coffee beans). I invert the areopress put the plunger at about the 2; Add 1 Aeropress scoop of coffee. Add water almost to the top Stir a few times Attach filter (tightly) Let sit (timing from when water was poured in) for 60-90 seconds Flip and plunge. Add hot water to coffee cup so there is a full cup. I don't measure the coffee or the water in grams or worry about being too exact with the timing and it still makes a pretty darn good cup of coffee. I use lighter roast coffee and grind the beans relatively fine. I am not super precise in the how I grind the beans using my cheap grinder. I think the most important element is good coffee beans (I like Intelligensia). It makes me think that it is plausible for me to build a 2-speed, using a White 16/19 on the back and two chainrings on the front with 3-teeth of difference, so I could have one rear wheel position. Right now my concept is a 35/38 in front with the 16/19 in back. My two gears: 35x19 and 38x16 would be 50 and 64 with 27 diameter wheels (700x32). On a 110mm BCD, I could alternatively easily run a 36/39, a 39/42, a 40/43 or a 42/45 in front without having to chase down any weird chainrings. On a 94mm BCD, I could run a 29/32 for offroady stuff. As a shifting maneuver, I'd loosen the right side bolt. Stick-shift the chain from big-to-small and then from small-to-big. Then tighten the right side bolt again and ride away. Anyway, by my numbers, spinning at 110RPM with a 27 diameter wheel is 21mph, which is plenty fast for road cruising for me, especially when I can coast downhills. I think I can handle the 50 gear up my hill as well. I wonder what others feel they need. I know Patrick Moore zens out with a slow metronome cadence climbing with 70-something gear inches. Re: [RBW] Re: Which RBW Velosophies have worked for you? Which haven't?
Wide tires, wool, and platform pedals are the biggest for me. On the not working so well side albatross bars, and bars well above saddle height. The big differences that work for me: 1) Grant got me back on steel. I started on steel in 1995 (plus 38mm tires and high handlebars) and upgraded to aluminum in 2007. Grant got me to comparing my steel and aluminum bikes and steel came out the winner. 2) Fat tires. With a short, 6-month exception, all of my riding was on 35-38mm tires. My inclination was to go skinner. Now I've got 40mm Schwalbe and I'm looking for a bike that will let me mount Big Apples. That single limitation is my current bikes' biggest drawback. 3) Titanium sporks. I like a lot of bits and pieces in my salad and I've always been frustrated because a fork doesn't work well at the end of the salad and I don't like having to switch utensils. I never considered a spork because I'd never seen one that wasn't plastic (and breakable) and I'd never seen one where the tines extended far enough to actually stab baby carrots and grape tomatoes. As far as what hasn't worked for me, there is only one big one: Albatross bars. I desperately want to like them but they are the most uncomfortable thing I've ever ridden. I've tried them on several different bikes with different top-tube lengths and at different bar heights. Having my hands nearly parallel to the top tube is just the most uncomfortable feeling I can imagine. One of my second-hand bikes had a set of MTB bars with 60mm of rise, 10 degrees of sweep and an overall width of 66cm and they are perfect. Every time I try a different bar I end up coming back to those. There are still plenty of Riv ideas I haven't tried that intrigue me so only time will tell. Wider tires.* This has made a huge diff for my quality of riding. I used to own a typical race bike with 700 x 25, 120psi tires. It was great to ride, but hard to handle as it banged and bounced and tires got yanked around on gravelly, busted up shoulders. Not to mention the fear of getting the narrow tires caught in longitudinal road cracks. Got my Rivendell bikes and have used 32mm-40mm ~55psi tires on them and what a difference. No more bike bouncing. Slight rumbling and I am through the rough road parts. Tires stay on their straight course through the bad patches and I feel so much safer. Cush to boot. Very stable handling. I cannot see myself ever going back to anything narrower than 32mm wide tires. They seem dangerous to me now. *2. Fenders.* I never woulda dreamed of putting these on a bike in the past. But now I don't see riding without them making any sense to me. It is just good to be prepared and not have to worry about grunging up the bike with the street scum. They look great to boot, and are standard equipment on my bikes. I love the ultra coverage of the longboards. *3. Leather saddles.* No more butt pain. yay! What a smooth surface to sit on. I did have a little break in for a coupla weeks, but another dab o' proofhide broke her in and now its great. *4. Re: [RBW] Sidepull brakes versus Cantilevers
I think the key issue is tire and fender clearance. For up to 700 x 35 I like silver side pulls. I like the modulation, stopping power and most importantly ease of adjustment. For wider tires I prefer cantilever or v brakes. Once you go wider than 35 fender clearance can be an issue and depending on your brake levers you may have to deflate your tire to remove it with side pulls. Dan Abelson St Paul, MN On Apr 5, 2013 1:40 AM, john johnco...@comcast.net wrote: I've been searching the archives for a specific topic which I have not found. Excuse me if I missed it. Due to the fact that an auto struck me while riding, ruining the original the fork of my Sam Hillborne (with cantilever studs), I got a replacement fork (Thanks Rivendell!) which didn't have the studs for canti's. Thus, I'm now using Tektro 559 sidepulls, rather than Tektro 720 canti's, which was spec'd on the bike. I've read much about types of brakes, their various attributes, and etc. Some argue cantilevers have more stopping power (greater mechanical advantage) than sidepulls. Some argue side pulls are simple, elegant, and easier to adjust. Some say, racers have been using sidepulls for years, why not me? Others say neither option is the best; centerpull brakes are the way to go. Then, there is the linear pull brake (V brake), which is another type of cantilever, I believe. Not to mention disc brakes, both mechanical and hydraulic Although I value statistical analysis (Bike Quarterly), I prefer to hear from people who actually ride certain brakes, and what the like, and dislike. I'm not enough of a tech-minded person to stay with all the detail of mechanics. The question is this: Those of you who have used both cantilevers and sidepulls on a Rivendell frame (especially on a Sam Hill, but any will do, I think), which do you prefer for stopping power (not aesthetics), and why? That is to say, if you were to spec a new bike, and it were a road bike, not intended for touring with massive loads but for day rides, multiday tours, even touring any distance with less than 50 pounds, which brakes would you choose, and why? I'm interested in knowing why Rivendell changed their choice of brakes on the stock Sam Hill. from a cantilevered bike to a side pull spec'd bike. Perhaps they save cost in frame production? Perhaps they prefer sidepulls? Perhaps they needed to purchase many of their designed Tektro 559's in order for Tektro to make them? In any case, I'd be curious to hear what folks have to say on the topic. As for myself...I'm still on the fence. I like the sidepull's looks much better. I like the ease of adjustment. I think their stopping power is not as great as the cantilevers - at least compared to my Tektro 720 cantilevers with yokozuma pads. But they're close. Close enough? Depends on how steep the hill, how much weight is on the bike, and etc., of course. In the end, I know it's a very personal choice. Thanks. Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins
I agree with Jim that vertical drop outs are preferable for geared bikes. Though for me it is not a huge issue as none of my 3 geared bikes have vertical dropouts. Dan Abelson St. Paul, MN On Mar 22, 2013 7:27 AM, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery thill@gmail.com wrote: Aside from fixed-gear conversions (not ideal with Riv's low BBs), I don't see many advantages to a traditional horizontal dropout. With freewheeling singles or IGHs, a chain tensioner is a good solution. A lot of people have a reflexive distrust of chain tensioners, but a quality tensioner (especially the Rohloff) is a wonderful thing. Of course, a tensioner detracts from the clean chainline that is apparently the defining hallmark of a good single-cog bike. But Riv is not really a single-speed brand, nor has Riv ever made any effort to promote IGH use. In fact, as much as I like Pudge's Rohloff Bombadil, the chain tensioner isn't the only hack required to make it work. Since the frame lacks a provision for OEM Rohloff compatibility, a long clamp-on torque arm is required, too. The vertical dropouts that Riv uses are sensible. Rivs are made for dérailleur drivetrains. The vertical dropouts make for a precise wheel-to-derailleur relationship that promotes consistent shifting. The vert dropouts also prevent the wheel from slipping if the qr isn't tight enough. And, of course, there's fender line to consider. If you're designing a frame for derailleurs, vertical dropouts are the way to go. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Replying Directly to The Author of a Post
I think Jim meant that the reply to author function is available if you do the hover thing when you are viewing the list in Google Groups not Gmail. If you want to reply to author in gmail you need to cut and paste the address. I prefer the way IBOB works where the default is reply to author instead of group especially when viewing on my phone because if I want to send to the group the group is already in my address book so it can be added easily without cutting and pasting. If I accidentally send to the group instead of the individual its not a big deal, I can just resend to the group, but when the group is the default you end up with a bunch of extra emails that were meant for the individual especially on FS posts. Re: [RBW] Need a new floor pump
I've had the Nashbar orange pump for about a year. I like it a lot. I definitely like it better than the topeak Joe Blow sport it replaced. Online reviews have just confused me, though the Nashbar Orange pump gets high marks. However, since I expect to keep and use a pump for many years, I don't feel compelled to shop by price. Additional info: the current pump is a Specialized-branded pump purchased years ago from a LBS. i used it - as I've done before - to pump the tires on my car, and I think I pulled the head off incorrectly so that now it won't grab the presta valve on any of my bike tubes. I'm sure Specialized did not make the pump but have no idea who the actual manufacturer is, so cannot contact any company for a replacement head. It's been an excellent pump with an accurate gauge. Riv content: of course, I'll pump the tires on the Bleriot with the new one! At the moment, I'm using my Topeak Morph with gauge to top off all tires. Bailey Falls Blue is the color. An interesting dark blue/green metallic. I have a bottle of touch up paint for it from Waterford and an extra decal set. Stronglight A9 alloy headset with both sealed and needle bearing set. The sealed bearings are installed - the needle bearing set is new and unused. This is a really great frame for all around riding or loaded touring. Very comfortable and stable yet pretty lively thanks to the geo and the tubing selection. 26 wheels on the 53cm frame. Grant design and Waterford build. The Wayfarer is basically the Heron Touring frame with these changes: • Features a new, heavy-duty fork equipped with mid-fork braze-ons for low-rider rack mounting. • New stainless steel dropouts are left bare on the mounting surfaces to prevent paint damage from quick release skewers and hubs. • The chainstay bridge is positioned the same distance from the rear axle as the seatstay bridge to provide a cleaner fender installation. • The seatstay and chainstay bridges provide braze-ons for simple, direct fender mounting. I am with Jim on the threadless headsets. I have two rivs that I love but if I could change one thing it would be to go threadless. It would offer a much wider variety of handlebar choices, I find it easier to adjust the headset, and it is stiffer, and more headsets are available, and I like being able to remove the bars without unwrapping the tape. I am relatively new to disc brakes, but I like the mechanical bb7 brakes on my surly troll a lot especially now that I am finally figuring out how to adjust them. Re: [RBW] Re: New budget Riv in Summer 2013?
I was reminded of one other benefit of threadless the other day when I pulled the stem out of my quickbeam to grease it after not greasing it for longer than I should have. While the stem was not stuck yet, I had to apply a little extra force to get it out. The stem getting stuck is not an issue with threadless. Don't get me wrong I love my rivs that and I realize there are various kludges such as adaptors to get threadless stems to work on bikes designed for quills but for what its worth I have a preference for threadless and having had bikes with both have found no downside for me to threadless. My opinion would probably be different if I liked to change bar height mid ride etc. Dan Abelson Saint Paul, mn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS/FT Brooks B17 Standard and Riv Banana Bag

Re: [RBW] New SimpleOne
Eric, Enjoy you new Simple One. For fenders on my Quickbeam, I have Planet Bike Cascadia with the quick release in the back (I don't think that they use to come with a front quick release but they do now and you can order an extra quick release for the rear directly from Planet Bike). In general things went smooth, although I did shatter a plastic fender. Pics here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/14126468@N05/sets/72157629469808006/ Glad I did this, even though the bike is technically on the small side. With a 9cm stem, the bars are just where I want them. There is probably too much seatpost showing for some. That may go down a bit once I ride it a bit. Feels about 1cm too high. Also need to add fenders and a rack. Maybe a kickstand. To folks that own a SimpleOne or Quickbeam - what is the preferred fender SKS with the quick release in back, or Berthoud? Re: [RBW] Custom Atlantis?
Other than the traditional looks the surly troll seems close to what you are looking for. I have one and riding it never fails to put a smile on my face. I currently ride a 58 cm Surly and it fits me. My parts could easily interchange (with a 700c Atlantis). I get some ghost shifting with the Surly when I load it up hence my thought toward a stiffer frame. I'm heavier (257 now) and want a frame that I can use for occasional camping but mostly road riding. I'm not much of an off roader but I can see doing more of it in the future when I start to lose my nerve for riding on the road. I'm 53 and this will probably be my last frame purchase so I've been thinking about it from several perspectives.versatility, longevity, load carrying, traditional looks, ability to stand over for big tires and off road riding in the future etc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. So: the Wooly Warm looks nice tho' pricey; the down side is that it is a pullover and can't be quickly unzipped when you enter a building (while shopping, say) to avoid overheating; otoh, it is knit so allows more air circulation. I do have a WW LS sweater/jersey, and it looks as if the vest is like that, simply sans arms. I have another Cannondale vest of light nylon, but that is generally too thin for the use I have in mind. The vest I want repaired is a dual vest/jacket combo made of heavier fabric that was just right for what I have in mind. So, I am asking for opinions and recommendations: what do you recommend as the best compromise for the following criteria? 1. Light to medium layer for days when a second, full sleeve jersey or top is not warranted, to be worn over a wool ls base layer, usually (ss wool jersey + arm warmer, or ls wool jersey). 2. Adapts easily to changes in temperature, eg when getting off the bike after sweating on a cold day, and going inside a heated building. 3. Some wind blocking quality. 4. Durable. 5. Packs small to fit into a saddlebag that may also be stuffed with groceries. 6. Long enough in back to but not baggy. 7. Good looking (the Riv WW wins here, of course). 8. I was curious whether any of you who enjoy pedaling free have tried the Ergon PC-2 Pedals http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/interbike2010-pc2 They are certainly not the prettiest pedals but they look interesting for a city bike. Re: [RBW] Where can I find Riv Baggins bags for sale?
Check out Frost River or Duluth Pack while not labeled Baggins they are similar. Some of the Duluth Pack bags are a little goofy (the straps are reversed on the Hobo bag). Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar setup
How does a steerer tube wear out? How old is this bike, anyway? I had my Paramount 20 years and the steerer never wore out. Its possible that the head tube has been ovalized which could cause that problem. I have done that before on a cheap mountain bike that I rode hard. I currently have a Nooodle bar on the Bombadil and am thinking about moving my current dirt drop bar setup to my wife's Heron and going with a Bullmoose Bar. I'd put the thumb shifters on the new set up and get rid of my squeaky Deore derailleur in the process. I saw the XT rear for sale on the list and I'd buy it today, but I was wondering what you guys/gals thought? [RBW] FS NOS Early 90s Deore XT Rear Derailleur MD-732
I am selling a NOS Early 90's Deore XT Long Cage Rear Derailleur. It is a long cage RD-M732. The Derailleur is unused. It has some light scratches like you would expect from a derailleur that has been sitting around for 15-20 years. Photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/abelvitz/sets/72157626431195032/ $75 shipped to CONUS. I have seen these go for over $150 on e-bay. I would rather not deal with the e-bay hassle and sell it here. Thanks Dan Abelson St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Worst Selling Superstars
I am a big fan of the cotton stubby. I like the look of the short bill. While the price is a bit high I think it is worth it. Dan Abelson On Feb 20, 2011 10:37 AM, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote: Interesting post. Here are my personal reasons for the underselling items :) Brand V Grab Sack: I have a Swiss Army gasmask bag that is very similar, albeit a bit more narrow and taller, and uses a metal button closure. Love that bag, take it everywhere. So the basic concept is sound, I think, though perhaps we are all too attached to bags that attach to the bike. My reason for NOT considering it? May seem snobbish, but I think the Brand V logo patch is UGLY. The graphic design does not complement the bag design at all. The fact that the RBW logo is so lovely makes the Brand V logo even more of a crime. But actually it's the colors that really get to me. Can't think of colors that would clash more with the lovely tan and olive of the bag. An aside: The MUSA logo is terrible as well, mostly because it's way too big. I do like the Sackville logo. But I bet you if all those items simply sported some variant of the Rivendell logo, not only would they sell better, they would also help sell more bikes. While we are at it, while I love (most of) the model-specific head badges, I think Rivendell is doing itself a disservice here as well, by incurring additional cost, and missing a blatant opportunity to strengthen the Rivendell brand (you really have to examine my Hillborne in detail to find our who makes it). I know, I don't like marketing either, but it's such an easy opportunity to get the Rivendell message out to more people. Just use the lovely Rivendell logo you have on all your in-house designed products, and don't waste your time creating more and more brands (with ugly logos) that most people cannot connect with Rivendell. Windshield: Again, color. Yes, safety is good, but there are other ways to be seen from the front. If I lived in a colder climate and it came in an interesting shade of green, or a dark grey, I'd get one. Stubby Bill caps: I have the wool stubby, and LOVE it. I think the problem here is that Riv has a bunch of nice cotton hats at half the price, and that the woolly one is the same price as the cotton stubby. Most folks expect to pay less for cotton than for wool. Note Cards: Well, I have to admit it's been a long time since I wrote a card that wasn't for my wife, and she isn't into bikes that much. Maybe that's the problem: Perhaps Riv owners still write cards, but do we write them to our bike buddies? We either see them regularly on rides, or we communicate on the computer through this group and others. Ponchos: Once again, color. Admittedly bright color in a rain poncho is more important than in a wind shirt, but I have never been a fan of primary colors. I much prefer the orange of the rain pants for the poncho (I know, you probably can't get that fabric in orange), and would prefer the rain pants in black, cause pants get dirty and light colored ones will look yucky. A bright top should be enough to be seen, no? And yeah, considering the price of the breathable MUSA rain pants, the poncho seems a bit over-priced.
