[RBW] (Re)-introduction and feeler for a trade
I have been a member of this group for a long time. I have not been active for a while due to a crash. I have a Rambouillet, an A. Homer Hilsen and a (crashed) SimpleOne. My spouse has a Betty Foy. I was at the receiving end of a hit-and-run crash a while back and have not been able to do much riding since. I used to ride those bikes, along with my LHT as my main transportation for many, many years. Because of the injuries to my brain, I do not trust myself to ride alone in traffic anymore. I live in the city, so I don't have much choices of riding as transportation anymore. I have trail riding available to me. It takes someone picking me up to take me to them, but at least they are available. I am considering trading the AHH for a Hunqapillar, to better suit some of the trails, either complete or as frame/fork. I can provide details on the Homer to anyone interested, but it is the one of the earliest of the blues, if not the first. It is sized at 63cm. The paint is in very good shape. Minor scratching from many years of use, but no dents or dings. As is, it is very well equipped with bosco bullmoose, wood fenders, and other details that I can list forever (and will for anyone who wishes). As long as the Hunq does not have dents or dings, I will be happy with any and all paint scratches. I am interested in the 58cm size. Thanks so much for your reading and consideration. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam / SimpleOne Sizing?
89.5 PBH and I own a 62 cm SimpleOne. I love this bike and the fit is PERFECT for me, but it is still in it's mangled state from a crash last year. One day I hope to either repair or replace it. [RBW] Got my wrecked SimpleOne back from the police.
It has been a while since I have posted as I have not ridden in a very long time (until this past week!). I did receive my wrecked SO back from the police this week. Spent an afternoon removing the parts from the frame and seeing what is what. Remarkably, most of the parts are in excellent shape. In fact besides the frame itself (which I don't know how will end up), the only parts I will not be able to reuse are the rear rim and spokes and the rear fender (I was hit from the rear and the wheel essentially disintegrated) and maybe the handlebars which are aluminum and I may decide not to trust anymore. What is really remarkable to me and I am very proud to say, is that the front dynamo wheel that I built when I acquired the frame several years back, is as true as the day I took it off the truing stand the day I built it. I am so happy that I am riding again, though it may be some time before I get the freedom to ride as I used to do. It is without a doubt that working on bikes is a big therapy for me. My good friend and list member, Pam, allowed me to work on her well used Betty Foy recently. Thank you. I expect I will be riding again soon. Have my doubts about bringing this up with the spouse. She is still every much suffering PTSD symptoms since the crash. [RBW] Re: Rain Gear
I use the breathable raincoat and pants from JG cyclewear (http://www.bicycleclothing.com/) . They keep me dry when cool to cold and rainy. I don't mess with rain gear in the warmer months. A big plug for the protection this gear has given me. I was hit hard in a hit-and-run incident earlier this year. All my clothes, including the rain gear, were cut off my body when the rescue team showed up. Though I had many broken bones, everyone in the know commented on my lack of nearly any road rash or skin abrasions. I give a lot of credit to the fabric that JG (USA made) uses. [RBW] Re: What's in your garage?
58cm Olive green Surly LHT. My usual winter commuter/grocery getter. 63cm A. Homer Hilsen. Also used quite liberally as a commuter/getter of stuff. 62 cm Simple One. Currently in police custody after my incident earlier this year. Was my main commuting bike and just my go-to bike in general. Oh, how I miss it so much... Spouse is intent it will never be built up or repaired in any fashion except as art work. Did I mention I really miss this bike? 60cm Purple Rambouillet Currently set up on a trainer as that it the only riding I can do until my old bones heal longer. 2 nearly identical Bromptons I picked up for song for my spouse and I to use when traveling. 58cm Betty Foy for the spouse and a Ridekick trailer for her as well. Get's used every day. 54 orange quickbeam. Super duper fun. Cannondale Adventure 2 step through hybrid. Permanent baby seat gets used a lot. Electra Townie 7d. My wife's ride which is super fun. 1969 Schwinn Twinn-which my oldest daughter (8) thinks is the coolest bike ever. Mostly because she doesn't have to pedal. And it has baskets for all her dolls. Jamis Capri 24 that's my oldest daughters ride. Fine little bike. First one she got to pick out all by herself. I asked her why she likes it best-she said it makes me feel like I'm a teenager-I'm in trouble. Surly LHT which usually sees super nasty weather duty. I'm not sure if I'll hang on to that one but it's a good bike so I probably will. Needless to say we have never had a car in our garage. My wife stopped complaining a while ago. So I guess it's ok. He then changed lanes to not run me directly over as he sped away. He later reported an incident in which he said the damages to his car were caused by boxes falling off a truck. I just want to share with everyone that I got my Cheviot 2 days ago and I love it.. Went on a long ride yesterday (with my husband riding his new Space Horse thanks to this group) and had so much fun. Should've bought a good bike years ago. It is beautiful. Only problem is I refused to leave it outside and my husband is not really pleased with it in the motor home. But my son understood completely. He bought a used Cross Check last week and has it in the house because he just loves looking at it (and he has several Rivs out in the garage so it shouldn't be quite as special an experience for him). I just don't have any good bicycle knowledge, although I've really been studying up and know 100 times more than I did 4 months ago. So it was a little scary for me buying this bike, but I couldn't shake the way the Rivendell philosophy spoke to me and I daughter-in-law graciously let me ride her too-big-for-me Glorius enough that it helped. I had to really rely on Keven. He patiently answered all my questions, but really I had to just rely on him and I would say the bike is spot-on for me. Did I mention it is beautiful, - in a very rugged, sporty way. I agonized over orange because I loved my daughter-in-law's blue bikes, but the orange with the blue highlights is just perfect. As I said, I don't really know bikes but it was like a feast just looking at the beautiful bikes in their shop Monday. The Clems and Clementines are there with beautiful paint jobs. The curves on the Clementine are so nice. Makes me want to buy one even though that would be the most ridiculous thing I could do. It is a sickness. [RBW] Re: Getting comfortable on the Noodle
Like many of the others who have already responded, the key to finding comfort with the Noodle for me was finding the right stem length. On my 60cm Ram, it was a 9cm Nitto Deluxe (similar to the Tallux). Full disclosure, earlier this year I replace the Noodle on that bike with an Albastache (same stem) and could not be happier with the change. I love this new version of the mustache. The noodle itself is setup in the way described on Riv's page, with a pretty flat ramp extended by the brake hoods. On a 20 mile ride yesterday I found my shoulder blades feeling tension, and found myself alternating between the ramps and the top of the bar, with the hoods feeling like they were really a reach. Am I describing a typical feeling/riding experience on Noodles, or do I just have proportions that may be better suited for the more upright riding style of Albatrosses? It certainly seems like I shouldn't have to get used to a bar before feeling comfortable, but am looking for your experienced input on making a switch from upright to drops. Thanks! I thought about swapping to a different freewheel to see if a worn cog was the cause of the slip. (Chain and freewheel were new ~500 miles ago, chainrings are new-ish with good teeth. But, I figured I'd diagnose one part at a time). But, before I did that, I decided that I should clean the bike before I started wrenching on it. Our snow melted last week, so the streets have been more puddles and potholes than pavement. And my Riv is my only bike with full fenders right now. I washed the bike with soap and water, and scrubbed the chain and drivetrain with a rag. By no means did I do a thorough drivetrain clean, nor did I use degreaser or a stiff brush. I re-lubed the chain with Boeshield. Amazingly, the chain slippage went away! From serious crunching to CND (could not duplicate). Clean your bike! It will look great and run better. I was worrying last night about the bike and what I'd have to do to fix the drivetrain. After this morning's commute I realize it just needed a clean and lube. Re: [RBW] Polished Dura Ace centerpulls (from Ram/biggest tire/fender thread).
I bought the DA centerpulls NIB on Ebay a couple of years ago for what I now realize was a steel at $50.00. The guy had six complete sets and I kick myself for not buying all six. So all I had to do to get the polish was brush an old rag across them a couple of times. Putting them together with the VO fenders and the Kojaks was simplicity itself. Previously, I had a set of VO hammered in that same size under Tektro brakes. Maybe they were not shaped as well, but the clearance between fenders and tire is now very consistent, where before I would occasionally discover a new fender rub. Patrick, I love these Kojaks! It was actually you singing their praises, that made me try them in the first place. So it was with elation that I woke this morning to clear skies and happy brain and headed down from our house to the Pikes Peak Highway turn-off to climb back up again. Wow! Did it feel good to be pedaling my way up the highway. Early on after the toll booth I switched to my low gear of 32-22 on the flip-flop side. The ride to Crystal Reservoir is steady climbing but relatively easy as it’s in the woods, protected mostly from the wind, and still at the altitudes I ride frequently (8-10,000 feet). Things got interesting a bit after the halfway point (9.5 miles). The road was much more exposed to the wind, and it was steady at 30 mph with gusts to 40. The grade of the road was such that I may have been able to ride it sitting down without wind, but it would have been pushing it. Of course, standing make me a huge wall for the wind to blow against, trying heartily to send to backwards downhill. The next three miles to Glen Cove were very challenging. I stopped about ever half mile or so for a mini-breather, kicking into high-altitude climbing mode 3-4 miles before I figured I would. There was brief respite from the wind on occasional short sections of switchbacks, and I made it up these with relative ease, so perhaps on a less windy day that estimate would hold. I steadily made it to Glen Cove, 7 miles shy the summit. Of course those seven are likely doubly harder than the previous 12.5. Being near treeline, there was nothing to stop the wind, and the direction of the highway was mostly into its teeth. I tried standing pedaling and was able to inch my way forward. That, and me being wimpy, all combined to make the decision to turn around an easy one. The descent. Sublime. Wow. Smooth, curved flowing road. Amazing! Then I caught up with a vehicle and had to slow way, way down. On a straight-away I was able to pass, and did this several times. Passed bike tourists on the “we drive you up, you bike down” tour. The support van driver had cheered me on on the way up (in a good, didn’t startle me way). The 4 mile section from the base of the PPH is a very familiar 4 miles of gentle climbing I usually do in 40-16t. Since I was already in that from the descent, I decided to stay in it and see how I did, to get a benchmark of if I was out of shape, or if the wind was a big factor. I had a headwind back, but rode it with ease. Hopefully that bodes well for the next time I give this a go, which I look forward to doing! https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/sets/72157648378500158/ With abandon, Patrick *www.MindYourHeadCoop.org http://www.MindYourHeadCoop.org* *www.OurHolyConception.org http://www.OurHolyConception.org* -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] WTT: Regular Bullmoose for the Bosco Bullmoose
Greetings fellow Riv owners, I have what is essentially a like new Nitto Bullmoose bar with very few miles. I have owned it for about a year and have tried this bar on my SimpleOne a few times now. I always end up removing it because it just does not feel right for me. For what it's worth, when I take this bar on the trails it comes into its own and I definitely see the value. However, I don't ride trails enough to hold on to it. Time to admit that this bar is not suited to my riding habits. I am looking to trade it for the Bosco Bullmoose in similar condition. That is one standout bike. I bought a Rambouillet from a list member a few years back. Though the color was described as a dark purple/blue, to my eyes and on my monitor the color looked navy. When I unpacked the bike, in person the color is very purple and not blue at all. I have always liked purple as a pleasing color, but never saw myself owning a purple bike. I get more compliments on the color of this bike than all my other bikes combined. Five or so years later, the bike needs a repaint and the only paint scheme I am considering is the same purple with creme details it has now: http://www.flickr.com/photos/73873271@N03/8732525212/in/set-72157633463438407/ On Friday, March 21, 2014 11:46:11 PM UTC-4, Tony DeFilippo wrote: http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/03/new-bike-day.html I'm quite satisfied to say that I've introduced another Riv to the East Coast (to offset the big Atlantis I sent to Portland)... It is different than the SA kickback in that it is not a kickback, but instead shifts automatically from one speed to the other at a preset point. For my wheel and tire size, that worked out to be around 12 mph. I preferred to have it shift at a slightly higher rate and, with instructions found on the internets, I was able to raise the shift point to about 15 mph. After a best guess of 15,000 miles or so, I can say that this hub seems very reliable. When I did open it up to change the shift points, I did clean it out real good, repacked the bearings and added some Phil's oil to splash around in there. It should be a great project and I intend to take it slowly and thoughtfully as I've never built up a non-derailleur bicycle. Initial thought was to possibly try out the Sturmey-Archer 2-speed Kickback hub as the basis of a wheel build and possibly a Sturmey-Archer crankset but I'll need to do some homework on gearing, spacing, chainline etc. Nothing is set in stone at the moment and each component will be a new decision point but, barring the possible S-A components, it will clearly be a Rivendell build when it's done. These are two words that describe my initial impression of Schwalbe Little Big Bens (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tben-10128.htm) after commuting into work with them on my SimpleOne for the first time. Not exactly a conversion, but I put a RideKick trailer ( http://www.ridekick.com/) on my wife's Betty Foy. Without some sort of power assist, her heart arrhythmia would have forced her to give up biking long ago. With the Ridekick, she can (and does) commute to work when wishes. [RBW] Commuting on the fixed gear SimpleOne - revisited
So it has been a little over a month of almost exclusive use of the fixed gear SimpleOne (I did ride a few days on my Homer, here and there). Re: [RBW] First commute on fixed SO
Loved that article. Actually, it was reading similar online articles that pushed me to build the fixed wheel in the first place. I already had a love of singlespeed, but the call to try fixed became strong. I have to say that the ride home was measurably better than the ride to work yesterday, but I am still not sold yet. I made sure to shave my speed with the brakes on the downhills this time. No problem with the uphills. As many have said, uphills are easy ( and fun) on fixed. I think I may have to put the fixed away until the weekend, when I can give it some time in a no traffic situation to get in more practice. I find I am horrible at stop lights. [RBW] First commute on fixed SO
50 years old and I had never tried fixed gear, so I built a fixed/free wheel for my SimpleOne over the weekend. Not sure I am in love with fixed, but I will give it a couple of weeks before flipping it to the free side. Think I will have to relearn habits. I have a couple of big hills to roll down on the way to work and I picked up speed too fast. My legs did not like spinning so fast. Put on a set of Bullmoose bars as well. I am definitely liking them more than the mustache I had on there (though I do still like the mustache). Re: [RBW] Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?
Same here. Use them on all my Riv bikes seatposts with no issues. I do put a washer each side of the pitlock before installing. Yes, I do loose a little paint, but I think it is worth it for piece of mind when I lock up. [RBW] Re: My new(to me) A. Homer Hilsen finally built up after months of sitting in a box.
They are nothing short of fully functional works of art. After ogling Woody's website for a long time, I was still hesitant on trying them out as I really need working fenders on my bikes. While I was waiting on other parts to build up the Homer, my spouse surprised me with this set of fenders, so the decision to try them was made for me. I have no regrets. I have already rode them in very rainy conditions and they protect me and the bike just as well as the metal fenders on my other bikes. I will, at some point be adding a mud flap. [RBW] Re: My new(to me) A. Homer Hilsen finally built up after months of sitting in a box.
With great difficulty. Financial reasons made me take the slow route of buying parts a few at a time. As I bought them, I put them in a box and checked them off my list. [RBW] Re: My new(to me) A. Homer Hilsen finally built up after months of sitting in a box.
Mounted the headlight on the M-18 rack using a piece of an old chain ring as a bracket. I love these lights. They have all the best traits of the IQ Cyo I have on the other bikes in the family with the added bonus of a much wider beam. The build quality seems more sturdy as well. The rear light is highly visible from rear and sides. David On Monday, January 7, 2013 5:22:31 AM UTC-5, IanA wrote: Really nice photography. How did you mount the headlight? [RBW] Re: Velo-Organge
I have built maybe a dozen or so sets of wheels using VO rims. Me and my wife have ridden several thousand miles on our bikes with these rims (Raid, PBP and Diagonale). Very satisfied with them and would not hesitate to recommend. My new project (new to me AHH) is currently being built up using the Raid rims and will be my first time using a VO hub (for the rear wheel). David Charlotte, NC On Sunday, December 23, 2012 3:39:58 PM UTC-5, Kelly wrote: Just an FYI and I may be the only one to have not checked before.. Anyway when I bought the new shiny rims (which I couldn't find anywhere else) I went through a local bike shop and saved some pretty good dollars on them. I also saved almost 30 bucks on a rear cassette hub. So it was a win win buying from lbs and getting what I wanted. The rims built up nicely btw. I haven't had any experience with them other than that to date. Happy Trails Kelly -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
