Re: [RBW] WTB 650B Dynamo Wheel & Question About Alex Rims
Thanks all for the info. I believe this is actually an Alex DM24, not a DM18. I am going to try to find a local wheel builder that can take this wheel apart and rebuild it with a Shimano dynamo - that way I don't have another set of wheels (or a spart front wheel) lying around as Josh mentions. I cleaned up the wheel and there is some discoloration/oxidation around some of the spoke holes - doesn't look like a real crack. Anybody know of a wheel builder in Southern California (LA/OC)? Golden Saddle closed. Thank you. On Mon, Feb 26, 2024 at 8:22 AM tio ryan wrote: > I appreciate that info, Josh! [RBW] Re: Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle
I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna and love it for bike transport (not too happy with Toyota recall service though). I often drive sag on local events and once was able to fit 2 road bikes and a recumbent along with the three riders in the van. No need to take off any wheels. +1 on Keven - he is very chill. I last interacted with him on a visit to BB a couple weekends ago. He helped me conceptualize a new cockpit for my Homer based on a test ride on a Hunquapillar that Roman had set up for me. And he gave me a BB pin when I said that I got the last free Rivelo patch from John for being the 10th visitor to the new store in Portland. I first met Keven when I picked up my first and only riv - a AHH - in Oct of 2010. It was a 65cm and apparenty he was the only one long enought to ride and configure it for me. [RBW] Knobbies for 26 Atlantis
Anne - I put RockRoads on my AHH and loved them for road (they had a pleasing whooshing sound) and dirt and sand ( though in limited amts). Gave up on them because of not being able to solve fender issues. I live in Portland!! Then I got the Continental Cyclecross speed tire- it has a file tread in the middle and knobbies on the sides. ( Riv sells them sometimes) They were great for mixed terrain - I was able to keep up with several riders on full-on Mtn bikes on a ride with mostly dirt trails. [RBW] Re: Attractive front derailers
Hi Jim I contacted Mark at Riv regarding upgrading the crankset on my Homer to a Sugino triple and he recommended a Shimano Claris FD-2403-B front derailer. They stock them for builds at Riv World Headquarters but don't have them in the catalog. It is not totally silver - the clamp is gray (lighter to my eye than in the attached pic). I believe it was only $27.00 and Mark spoke highly of them. http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/nl/index/components/road/claris/product.-code-FD-2403-B.-type-.fd_road.html It was easy to install especially after a call to Mark who refreshed my memory as to the correct procedure - something to do with not running the chain before adjusting the hi-lo screws Duh! Hi All, I just switched out my last favorite rubber: Continental Cyclecross Speed 700-42C's that I bot from Riv last year --- great ride and good for both smooth and gravel as well as mud and freezing surfaces (actually measured 38mm on Mavic A319 rims at approx 60 lbs pressure). I now am running the Compass Barlow Pass 700-38 extralight tan sidewalls. They measure 37.7mm at 45 lbs on the front and 37.8 at 55 lbs on the rear - on Mavic A319 wheels ( awesomely built by Jude at Sugar Wheelworks in PDX). Have only run errands around town but they feel great - cushy, track beautifully (easy no hands riding) and seem to grip well in the usual PDX wet. Have just got out of the hosp after a bout with pneumonia so I haven't been able to do any long rides but will report back when I put on some miles. Re: [RBW] Re: Actual Tire Sizes
Hi Tom- I have been running the Continental 42's for several months. I bot them from Riv and they were said to actually measure 38 mm which I found to be true. I have liked them - mainly riding on roads but with a few wild rides on gravel, dirt, frozen dirt etc. My only problem was finding fenders to mount and ended up with SKS Velo 65 Cross fenders. I could not find them in the states but had them shipped from Europe They are a bit ugly but very functional for the Portland weather and are quick release for the sunny days. I originally tried some Bruce Gordon Rock N' Roads which I loved but could not solve the fender problem so they found a home with another list member. Great pics Smitty Tommy - that is a beautiful area - I do the Gorge Ride every year: Dalles to Mosher Tunnels and back via Rowena Crest and last year the day before I rode out 8 mile road as a warm up. The Friends have done a great job of restoring and preserving the old highway with the goal of providing a route that will be completely off Rt 84 from Troutdale to the Dalles. [RBW] Re: Aussie tights? Alternatives?
I have the aussies in size M and I have found them quite comfortable - Usually I wear then over padded bike shorts with a MEC bike knicker over them. I have been comfortable in a range of 28 to 50 degrees in sometimes sunny Portland OR. They are neither too tight or too loose - they don't bag at the knees - they do have a generous rise in the back - no plumber's butt with these (no offense to any trades persons ;-) I am 5'11'' 185 lbs (or so) and ride a 65 Hilsen. +1 On Feb 20, 9:02 am, Bruce Herbitter bruce.herbit...@gmail.com wrote: I wear Wooly warm tights over wool boxers or sucking tech fabric boxers and like them a lot. Alternatives? Has anyone (male) used the Aussie tights (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ab4.htm) over regular underwear? Are they decent or are they unstructured and thin enough that they require hip-latitude corsetry like bike shorts underneath? I did once order a pair of the earlier Rivendell wool tights and found them just too much like longjohns to satisfy. I'd like to find some long leg'd riding pants that are not too tight but that are snugger and warmer than the MUSA pants and that don't require a sub-garment foundation. I presently have a pair of very nice Bell Weather wind tights that I can wear over my usual boxers -- they are thick enough that they don't look like a second skin. No wind shell type pants, please -- must be woven and breathable but thick enough for riding down to freezing temperatures. Years ago, at least in Britain, they'd make cycling trousers with tapered and zippered legs, but the only ones I've seen -- Rick Risemberg's design sold by someone in SF and Raphas, for example -- are not cut right (for me) at the rear of the waist -- too low and loose enough to allow wind turbulence and discomfort. And Rapha's are not pegged. So loose tights seem a good alternative. -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRWhttp://resumespecialties.com/index.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The Thursday before, SNOWPOCALYPSE descended upon the PNW and the ride was cancelled. I had just received a few bike related trades in the mail that week and was eager to take them out. The jewel of the trades was an Acorn Boxy Rando bag which fit perfectly on my M-12 I had installed a few weeks previous. By 12:00 the sun had come out and most of the snow was gone. I was moping about in my robe and PJs (if you have never seen a 6'6 guy in full length PJs...) wearily getting some work done when my wife came in and forced me to get out while my son was still sleeping. A few minutes later I was enjoying myself on the Burke avoiding pedestrians and snow patches. It was amazing. I forgot my gloves and I don't own winter gloves anyway so I decided to stop at Recycled Cycles to see if I could find a cheap pair. A crow cawed as I dismounted my bike. I leaned it against the bike rack and opened my new bag to retrieve my mini u-lock. I felt so wonderful and smug showing off the new bag. Front bags are so civilized and what-not. But then something wet and squishy landed my hand, on my bag, and right in the front pocket. Was it snow? Dirt? The crow was right above me. It had pooped in my brand new bag the very first time I had opened it in public. I went in and asked for a paper towel and had it cleaned up pretty quickly. The buzz from riding for the first time in a week or more couldn't be faded. Besides: in Italy birds pooping on your head is considered good luck right? [RBW] Re: B-17 vs Flyer
I have been lurking a while as I wait for my AHH frame to arrive (RIV content) - I have lots of questions about the build but thought I'd comment on the Flyer question. I originally got the VO Model 5 saddle for my Trek 880 (a resurrected hybrid) and used it successfully for some loaded touring and longer day rides. I did find that the string that holds the sides together would stretch and in some cases break allowing the saddle to sag somewhat. Dealing with this issue, I still felt that the springs gave a comfortable ride. I now have a Flyer on my Rocky Mountain Sherpa touring bike and have found it to be even more comfortable - I have used it on numerous day rides, a couple loaded overnights, a couple 200km brevets and 1/2 of this year's Cycle Oregon (the 1/2 is another story) - all told probably about 2500-3000 miles. I really don't notice the springs unless I am riding on root strewn trails or when an unexpected pothole pops up. Then it is great because of the shock absorbing nature of the springs. The only other time I might notice the springs is when I am in the wrong gear and spinning madly like a hamster and bouncing up down on the saddle. Cannot blame the saddle for that though. I love the firm leather and did not really experience any breakin-period though I did give it the proofride treatment top and bottom initially. However, I am looking to experiment with a B17 on the AHH when it arrives. I am still riding the old way, by shifting weight onto the pedals if I see a pot hole, tracks, sharp curb, etc. For me and my riding style, the springs are virtually useless. The leather on my Flyer is not at all saggy. Quite the opposite. It is the hardest Brooks I have ever owned (and, frankly, the most attractive in terms of brown tints and tones). The saddle is heavy, also. All that said, I still have it mounted on my Quickbeam for some reason.
