Why rivendell doesn't break out the vernier calipers and tell us is beyond
me. But on dads it's 60mm at brake bridge, 59 at the seat stay. And 59 at
the chain stay. Yes I'm still alive, yes if I owe you something I feel

Not true where I am in Silicon Valley . If I show up at the start of
one of my (touring) club's rides, a ride meant for people riding a
 moderate
pace, and I see twenty other riders, there will be one steel bike, and
 I'll
be riding it. There will be no bikes that take tires wider than 28 mm,
other than my Roadeo. Typically riders have 25 mm tires pumped up rock
hard. Everyone will have lycra shorts including me (haven't found
 anything
else that works for me) and everyone else will be wearing roadie jerseys
 with sublimated graphics.

There's one club ride I go on, an easy-paced ride that I do for
camaraderie. Most of the riders are like me, over 50, in a lot of cases
well over 50. But there is one young woman who shows up on an old
Stumpjumper with flat bars, wearing street clothes. Although she has no
trouble keeping up, and she has a fine bike, almost every time she has
shown up at a ride I'm on someone will explain to her that her bike is
wrong and she needs a different one.

Do you read Vogue to find articles on dungarees or Harris tweed? Do you
read GQ to find out what to wear when gardening? I don't even know what
the mainstream bicycle magazines are any more. I do know that Bicycling
(does it still exist?) didn't offer a new article, or cover, in twenty
years. They just recycled the old ones on a regular basis (Climb better in
30 days! Get faster in 30 days! Prepare for a century in 30 days! Get
leaner in 30 days!). I hope you don't pay to read it. Doug, are you
confusing magazines with actual journalism? Magazines exist to make money,
and they'll print whatever they think will sell copies. Apparently what
you think is interesting isn't what they think will sell copies. Does that
prove something about your local bicycle shop, or does it just indicate
that maybe you're looking at the wrong magazine, which you knew before you
 picked it up.

I don't think that Grant just invented this issue. The phenomena is quite
real. Grant's message resonates with many because the racing phenomena IS
 real.

No, Grant didn't invent the issue, but he has fed the flames, and kept it
alive, and he has perpetuated a stereotype, and he has offended folks along
the way. For no reason. And I assure you that it has affected his bottom
line by marginalizing him. Canonize him for that if you wish.

And yes, I do (quite often) encounter smug racers in their spandex
uniforms who disparage practical cyclists. They are mostly wannabe's and
not real racers, of course. But they are numerous and annoying just the
 same.

Oh come on. There are rude and irritating members of every population
group. Do they represent their groups as a whole? See comments about
stereotyping. Also, people tend to see what they are looking for. If you
are looking for snotty racers, you'll probably find them. Ironically,
typing that reminds me of riding into my neighborhood one night from work.
My commute ride is about 40 quite hilly miles each way, a solid 2.5 hours,
especially after a day of work, and I had ridden both ways that day,
leaving the house in the morning at 5:30 (no, I do not do that commute both
ways very often). I was on a carbon Look, in lycra, and I had my clothes
and shoes and files and a laptop in my Timbuktu. I was riding very tiredly
into my development, done for the day, when a fellow in jeans and a plaid
shirt went spinning past me on a Surly. He was sitting upright, and he
ignored me as he spun past with a grin. I guess he kicked my ass. If it
had been me passing him, I would have said hello, because I try to be
 friendly to other cyclists.

Here is my suggestion to you and to Grant: Promote and enjoy the kind of
cycling and bicycles that you like, and let those things stand on their own
feet. If your LBS sucks and just wants to sell $15,000 Pinarellos and
one-piece suits, go to another store, or mail order, but don't tell me that
proves every LBS sucks, or that every customer of that LBS is an ass.
Don't sneer at other cyclists along the way, or if you do, they may say
things like Norma Steinberg said. There is sufficient rudeness and
division in our world. Don't perpetuate it.

Think about my comment about Ritchey and Fisher and Kelly not needing to
belittle roadies to make mountain biking attractive. The opposite happened
-- suddenly it was cool to have two bikes! Grant's ideas in Just Ride are
fine. Yeah, I've read it -- he sent me a copy, and I have it at my right
hand. It's just not necessary for anyone to prove that his ideas are right
by proving that someone else's ideas are wrong. Sometimes two ideas can be
right at the same time, and to make an idea attractive does not
require belittling another idea. You want to go for a run, go for a run.
You want to go for a walk, go for a walk. Runners and walkers don't need
to call each other stupid or liars.

We all have seen at the LBS the times when some racerish young LBS
employee is trying to fit an older person onto a racerish bike, that will
not be well served by said bike. Why is this what's in the mainstream?

I just got off the phone with three representative LBS's. I asked them
all the same thing: I'm going to send my 58-year-old neighbor in to see
you. He has average fitness, not bad, hikes on the weekend, hasn't ridden
a bike since college. He wants to start riding on weekends, maybe work up
riding more regularly. What kind of bike do you think he should look at
first? The shops were Black Mountain Bicycles, a large Specialized
dealer, the Performance near my house, and the Trek Super Store nearest to
 my house.

All three gave me the same answer: a flat bar road hybrid. None said,
well, duh, a racing bicycle, of course, with drop bars three inches below
the saddle! Then I asked about what tires would come with the bikes. Both
the Trek and Specialized stores said, somewhere between 32 and 38. The guy
at Performance said, 28 at the narrowest, but more likely 32 or 35. Two of
the three asked if I knew whether my friend had back or neck pain, and both
suggested my friend should start off with something pretty upright. The
guy at Performance said, well, I'd really have to talk to him to find out
what he wants to do with the bike.

So, are those answers OK with you, Jim? How big a sample do I need to
persuade you that stereotyping the industry, LBS's, and a group of
cyclists, has the same value as other stereotypes? By the way, do you know
what bike shops make the most money on, the largest margins? Rubber and
softgoods. If LBS's are as stupid and singleminded as you and, apparently,
Grant think they are, and if they are pushing bikes that will make people
uncomfortable, tell me, do you think their customers will come back and buy
rubber and softgoods? Will their customers be excited about riding, and
bring their friends in to buy bikes?

Do I think the racerish sale has ever happened? Of course I know that it
has. There are poor salespeople, making inappropriate sales, in every
industry. However, tarring the bicycle industry, and a significant group
of its members, all with the same brush, is not productive, and does not
reflect well on the speaker. The whole nonsense of making an entire group
of people wrong so that you can feel superior just needs to stop. And I
gotta tell you, I've never heard any of the racer-y people I know say,
those people on lugged steel bikes with alba bars sure are stupid and
 brainwashed.

I refer again to Norma's last paragraph. Clearly, she has gotten an
impression about Grant and about his positions, and it's not a positive
impression. I'm betting that she is in fact a nice person, and not a
stupid one. And, she's a cyclist! However she arrived at her impression
of Grant ... well, you draw your own conclusions.

Re: [RBW] bb/thread installation question

2015-02-17 Thread Goshen Peter
if it was just done once I doubt you have no threads left. Ive had older
frames that took a bit of chasing to get in a BB but with newer bikes it
should be pretty straight forward unless of course it was really cruddy
down there. I imagine they just didn't clean it up enough, but again
doubtful they stripped it out with one BB install. If all else fails there
are threadless BBs

guys put it in, since i dont have the tool or previous knowledge of how to
do this. i watched them and it looked like it was taking some work. hard
cranking, working it in and out etc. grease was used, but they didnt chase
it. it struck me as not the easiest/somewhat rough install, but id never
seen one installed before, so what did i know...

bike rides fine. bb is smooth, no sounds, no wiggle, no complaints.

Cut to me, now, watching instructional videos. i stumble upon a bb install
video and it seems like theirs went in much easier than mine. this makes me
 nervous.

i call a higher end and reputable bike shop and tell them this story.
mechanic says it might just be that it wasn't chased. it might be that
they stripped the threads and if we take the bottom bracket out, one will
never go back in again. i ask if what he would do if he was in this
predicament. we can check it out, but i would maybe just ride it until you
need a new bottom bracket because if the threads are gone, we cant fix it.

obviously, this makes me infinitely more nervous and sick to my stomach.

what can you tell me? what would you do? how likely is it that this is a
 deathblow?

where that idea can be verified.

I'm certain the outside diameter of the Atlantis tubes are the same
as always. So wether its tubes are a bit thinner/thicker is probably
 not that important.

We didn't discuss the effect of butted vs straight gauge so I can't
comment on that. Based on how folks seem to love even the straight gauge
Rivs, my guess is it doesn't have a very strong impact on the overall
 experience.

 Aaron Young

In the range of common bicycle tubing, the rule of thumb is one step in
diameter changes deflection about the same as two steps in thickness. So, a
25.4 (non-OS) top tube in 9-6-9 will flex about the same as a 28.6 (OS) top
tube in 7-4-7. The OS tube will be a little lighter, but the non-OS tube
will be tougher (if the steels are similar). Of course, then there's number
 of top tubes to consider!

However, since bikes like the Bombadil and Hunaqapillar may have 1+mm
tubing (straight or butted...who knows?) and the Atlantis has 9/6/9
 tubes,
there may not be that much benefit to the expensive tubes. My
understanding is that the benefit of expensive tubes is high quality
 steel
that allows the builder to use less of it and produce a higher
 performance
bike. The heavier Riv's don't seem to be designed to take advantage of
this. The Roadeo and maybe the AHH may be a different story and they may

There's probably more to the story when you get into the fine details
of all parts of the frame but overall, I think the above is accurate.

I've pondered if I'd be better of with a Hunq. But after looking at the geo
charts, it looks like the BB-drop is actually identical. Quite a bit of the
geo is similar actually. So it makes me wonder, what's really the
 difference between them?

I know the tire clearance has changed over time. Some maxed out at 2.1 I
think. Newer Hunq's can handle 2.3's if I'm not mistaken. If we ignore the
tire clearance for the moment, is there something I'm missing? Would an
Atlantis with Bullmoose bars = Hunq and a Hunq with Noodles = Atlantis?

This is mostly out of curiosity. I'm over the moon with my Atlantis and
don't hesitate to load it down and take it over the roughest terrain. The
frame is so heavy duty I can't imagine it being incapable of handling
 anything the Hunq could.

have any complaints save one - I tend to hit the pedals on the ground
somewhat often when I get into bumpy, rocky, or off-camber territory. Not a
huge deal, some strategic pedalling takes care of that. However, a few
times I've pondered if I'd be better of with a Hunq. But after looking at
the geo charts, it looks like the BB-drop is actually identical. Quite a
bit of the geo is similar actually. So it makes me wonder, what's really
 the difference between them?

I know the tire clearance has changed over time. Some maxed out at 2.1 I
think. Newer Hunq's can handle 2.3's if I'm not mistaken. If we ignore the
tire clearance for the moment, is there something I'm missing? Would an
Atlantis with Bullmoose bars = Hunq and a Hunq with Noodles = Atlantis?

This is mostly out of curiosity. I'm over the moon with my Atlantis and
don't hesitate to load it down and take it over the roughest terrain. The
frame is so heavy duty I can't imagine it being incapable of handling
 anything the Hunq could.

using the MB2 anymore thought I would give a try on a trade for the
frameset. Looking for a bigger 23-24 inch MTB frame, I have the original
bars, stem, shifters etc for the bike I can throw in for the sake of
posterity but I have a newer set of LX stuff sitting around im going to
use. Looking for someone in NYS tristate area so we don't have to pay for
shipping. I can drive a good bit if its part of the deal, I have a small
car good on gas and lots of podcasts, haha. Riv content...uhhh its an MB2.

On Jan 22, 2015 9:08 PM, Kyle Brooks bicycle1...@gmail.com wrote:

Shimano called it Rapid Rise but others call it low normal --
Basically, the derailleur's spring carries it to the largest cog, i.e. the
lowest gear. So its normal position would be on the lowest gear - hence
low normal. And since the spring tension is helping the derailleur to the
larger cogs, it makes those shifts a little faster or easier.

Whether its backwards or normal would depend on one's point of view. But
it's also worth noting that Shimano certainly didn't invent it, even if
they came up with a catchy name for it. The first slant parallelogram
derailleur, the SunTour Grand-Prix of 1964, was also a low-normal
 derailleur.

2015-01-13 Thread Goshen Peter
Much apologies to all who bought from me for the lack of communication. I
have been in an out of the hospital the last month and my lovely wife sent
everything parcel post after xmas. Please be patient, I will try to get
tracking if available tomorrow, I'm just able to get out and about now,
wisdom tooth to a jaw infection coupled with the flu has erased the last
month. If anyone is very upset we can talk offline about how to make it
right, contact me directly. Again a thousand apologies, I know it doesn't
make the stuff there any faster.

Hey I am one of the people who loves TV and my kid does too. I didn't take
any of the anti-tv stuff as preachy or self-righteousness. People live
their lives different ways and its interesting to hear about different

 Please stop.

Just a thought on the Soma GR-- perhaps you used a saddle that's

the seat post lower) than some other saddles.

For example, look at this comparison on Ocean Air Cycles (4th photo down):

If the Soma GR is otherwise nice, maybe try a different saddle with lower

Re: [RBW] Re: Bending back a bent fork

2014-12-17 Thread Goshen Peter
I had a bikeshop do this for me years ago, they had a jig they put the fork
in and just mainupulated it until it was true to the jig. Now my fork was
squashed in shipping so not sure about the front to back bending.

On Wed, Dec 17, 2014 at 4:14 PM, Bill Lindsay tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:

Within reason, sure. There was/is a shop tool that clamps to the fork
tips like a hub would, and braces itself on the BB shell and you turn a
leadscrew to push it back out. If the forkblades are wrinkled at all, then
you get a little more queasy about it. Feel under the top tube and down
tube right behind the lugs to check there for wrinkling as well. But yes a
competent framebuilder can advise when he/she sees it.

One time he broke a frame by riding into a parked car. Yeah, his steel

broke to protect that valuable Trek fork.

Anyway, when he took his bike to the shop for some very overdue
maintenance, they noticed that his fork was slightly bent back,
undoubtedly because he hit something. The bike is still ridable, but
the handling would be better if the fork were as designed.

The shop says they can get a frame builder to bend the fork back. Is
this a reasonable thing to do?

Well I own 5 flat screen TVs a PS4, Gameboy, ipad, kindle fire and all the

And I am glad I discovered Kindle: all sorts of wonderful free or

expensive frames, not to replace but to supplement the rest of the lineup.
 http://rivbike.tumblr.com/knotholearchive

In addition to a less expensive mixte, in an *indescribable greenish*
color and limited sizes, to be called the Betty Foy, *a singlespeed
that might be called the Simpleton*, and a *Bleriot-Hilsen-Saluki
kind of frame called the Sam Hillborne... an all-around road and light
 trail frame, touring compatible but not super beefed up for ultra-loads;
and for sidepull or centerpull brakes and tires up to about 41mm wide. Four
sizes, with 6-degree upsloping top tubes, to fit riders from about 5ft 2in
to 6ft 5in*, it mentions *an Atlantis-type bike that might be called
 the Buffalo*.

The Betty Foy idea clearly morphed into the Cheviot, and is less
expensive than the 'other' Betty Foy/Yves Gomez. The Simpleton is
obviously the Simple One and a replacement for the Quickbeam, but that one
was inexpensive to begin with. And the Sam Hillborne stayed pretty much
true to intent, as a less-expensive alternative to the Hilsen . So maybe
the Buffalo will be pretty much as anticipated too, as a less expensive
 alternative to the Atlantis?

On the other hand as we now know, the Appaloosa will be quite a bit
different than originally intended. So it could just be a good name, that
they're attached to, for something entirely new. Do they trademark these
names once they think of them? Would be interesting to know, in light of
the fact that this particular Blug entry was titled 'loose lips sink ships.

If the Buffalo is indeed to be an Atlantis-type bike, things are sure
getting interesting all of a sudden. Along with the Clem and new
Stretch-Hillborne Appaloosa, this might actually make THREE new bikes with
room for *fat* 700c tires!!![Grant, if you're listening, PLEASE make
one of them in that elusive in-between size, equivalent to a 56
 Hunquapillar or 59.5 Atlantis, etc..!]

+1 Joe, I learned to take step back and look at the bike a few times the

PS. One thing I've learned the hard way is the need to keep a 'big
picture' while wrenching. It's easy to lose track of what some other part
of the bike is doing while you're up close with a wrench, so it's good to
keep an eye on where everything is while you're working: Are the bars
steady, or hitting the toptube? Is the chain dragging across paint while I
mess with these cranks? Did I tighten that stem before I started taping the
 bars? That kinda thing.

Chris makes a great point. For someone starting out I would say go with
park tools, they are good quality and built to last, yes they are pricey

That is a very loose edit. Cost wise tools hurt at the outset. Around here
they hurt worse than the first several repair bills from the local shop.
Tool wise, 'good enough' is cheaper but 'very good' can add up, and it adds
up. This list of musts and optional tools might be interesting to the OP.

Re: [RBW] Re: I rode the Clem Smith proto this morning

2014-11-30 Thread Goshen Peter
Keith, we have the same pbh but I am 5'11 with longish torso and short
arms, finding bikes that fit me is a pain . I was most recently riding a
56 bombadil. I am also in between on sizes. I wanted a Hunqapillar when
they came out but didn't want a yard of seatpost on the 54 and the 58 gave
me zero clearance. Same with 52/56 bombadil and 56/60(?) Sam, and the 58/61
Atlantis. The 60cm 650b Saluki would be a good fit but rare as hens teeth
and not nearly the tire clearance I would want. For me the perfect bike
would be a 55cm bombadil with a 60 cm TT and standover at around 84 with
Max tires. The 56 bombadil fit well in the TT but a tad too large to go big
rubber. A 58cm Sam/Joe appaloosa with clearance for 60s no fenders would
also be great so fingers crossed.

I'm just shy of 6' tall and I've always thought of myself as short legged
and longer torso'ed but I'm no longer sure that is accurate. My 1983 MTB
 has a seat-tube of 57.5cm and a S.O. of 83 and I'm perfectly comfortable
riding it. In fact, I like how little seat-tube is showing and how easy it
is to get the handlebars high, even with a very short quill stem. Another
bike has about a 57cm seat-tube and 84cm S.O. and I can ride it but
wouldn't want to go any taller. My saddle height might be closer to 74cm
as I've recently realized that the one I set at 75cm has a lot of padding I
probably compress, My much flatter, less padded saddle sits at less than
 75cm from the BB.

I've never ridden a Rivendell but I've looked at the geo charts of the
 bikes I'm interested in:

I would ride a 54cm Hunqapillar. No question about it but the tires I
would run would put the S.O. higher than I would want for anything rougher
than smooth dirt. The next highest size would be way too big for me.

On the Atlantis I think the 56cm would be the best height for me but
given my experience with my other two bikes, I could ride a 58cm. The main
appeal of the Atlantis for me is the 26 wheels so that would preclude the
 58cm, regardless.

I was thinking that maybe the 59cm Clem might be right for me but when
Grant said up to 95 PBH, I pretty much counted it out. That's a huge jump
and I'm thinking the 52 has to be the right size for me but it still sounds
 too small.

The three framesets I'm currently considering are the Surly LHT (56cm/26
wheels), Troll (18) and Ogre (18). The LHT would be just the right size
although I might be able to stretch onto a 58cm. The Troll and Ogre will
have a ton of seat post showing but that's normal for that type of bike and
the extreme angle of the top-tube would make it very, very easy to get my
handlebars where I want them. Plus, I really like the way MTB's ride. I'm
currently riding a 26 wheel bike that is comparable in front-end geometry
to the 26 LHT and it's a little too twitchy for me, even with Big Apples.
I am coming off 3 weeks of riding an 83 MTB with 80 mm of Trail, though! I
test rode a stock 26 LHT and the 26 wheels with 1.5 tires were just too
twitchy for my tastes. I had thought maybe MTB bars and 55mm tires would
fix that but my current bike with similar front geometry shows me that's
 not the case.

I'm always on the lookout for a medium (18) Troll, Ogre or Karate Monkey
with a saddle set at 75cm so I can see what the proportions look like and
just his weekend a guy posted a Troll that fit the bill. It doesn't look
too bad and given the Ogre has the same length seat tube, it should look
 the same.

18 Troll with 75cm saddle height:

So it would be cool if RBW came out with their own decaleur to offer. The
bike industry needs another decaleur model.

I've tried it all - insulated water bottles (works for a little while),
insulated sleeves around insulated water bottles (works better than just
bottles, but still has limits), and my personal favourite, pouring a bunch
of bourbon into your water (kinda works I think, but maybe I just drank it
all before it had a chance to freeze..).

I'm planning a 160km ride over Christmas break up to my family's cabin. It
will be cold, with stops approx every 40km. So I could just not drink any
water other than at the stops, but that isn't ideal. Any home-brew
solutions out there? I had also thought of insulating my Swift Ozette bag
with some heat reflecting material and air bubble wrap, sealing it
relatively tight and throwing a hand warmer in there (assuming there is
enough air movement to keep the chemical reaction going).

[RBW] Appaloosa fall 2015

2014-11-21 Thread Goshen Peter
Per newest Blug update. Probably makes sense to keep the Sam for a bit more
as its their best selling bike and all. I mean I think its a great deal
without any Clem Appaloosa etc

The PLAN was to put Sam on hiatus, let it take a breather in the wings
while we introduced joe Appaloosa…and also get Clem Smith Jr. (best name
ever for an unracing bike) out in early Spring. But…it’s not that easy, not
a matter of Planning and hoping and imagining and trying. It’s more money
and timing and reserving the factory time in tme, and getting samples in
time to approve (got ClemSamps, not got joeAppa samps).

So rather than put Sam and Chev on hold and play keystone kops trying to
rush Clem and joeAP out prematurely and the next thing you know they came
out funky and we’re screwed….we (Dave more than me, and thank you, Dave)
suggested we stick with Sam Chev and let Clem and joeAPPA come along at a
sane pace…like maybe fall of ‘15?

I'm kind of conflicted on this thread. I've been working on a project
which finished up this morning, so I'm probably just worn out and grumpy
enough to ask just why this is a RBW related topic.

On the other hand, the actual auctioneer has contacted me directly asking
if he could post a response, which is currently in the moderation queue.
It's kind of blunt in places, but I'm guessing that it generally reflects
his nature. He does talk about how he runs his business.

I've got another project starting this afternoon, which means I can't
really micro-manage the responses - which I will say have shown reasonable
restraint so far. I'm wondering whether the response will simply be the
gasoline which creates a fairly dramatic fireball.

Like I say, I'm kind of conflicted.

I've followed through the comments so far, and there are many folks who
think it's just head-shaking funny. The Sucker Born Every Minute camp.
That's pretty much where I am, having served many years in the retail
trenches in a fairly affluent neck of the woods, I've seen people peel off
bills or crack a credit card for some reasonable ridiculous items, just
because they were the most expensive. As they say, you don't buy a Rolex
just because you want to know what time it is.

Then there are a few folks who have used stronger descriptions. And that
 is what worries me.

I'll probably think on this while I have lunch, but when I come back, I'm
leaning towards just letting the fellow make a few public statements.
After all, we did start this topic of discussion. I would probably keep
him moderated, so responses would not be instant due to the queue delay.

I guess the end result will simply be killing this thread now or passing
his comment through with the hope that we find our better selves and pause
a moment before responding. And of course, if it all devolves, that will
 still mean killing the thread.

If you have some thoughts, share them here.

See you in an hour or so!

Strange, I frequent estate sales here in NY with my mom and usually the
prices are really good, not yardsale giving it away good but below or at

People, ebay is an online auction house. The rules of the Auction house are
they present the product, you decide how much you want to pay. Now blatant
mis-representation is illegal and immoral but listing something for double
what its worth isnt either of those things. Why is a Rothko worth $40
million? because thats what someone paid for it.

With honjos hetres and a Rivendell if there isnt rubbing you are all good,
at last thats how i rode the AHH, very tight clearances. I think as the
fenders got more and more rock hits they quieted down, now i almost never
hear them. Not sure if thats the tires wearing in or the fenders are now
nice and grimy and dont give that metallic ping ping when rocks do get up
there.

A few 2-5mm from stay eyelet bolts to tires, depends on which fender.
About 1.5 at fender ends from tire to inside of fender.

Re: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-11 Thread Goshen Peter
Oh, i hear you. When see outrageous prices i know it is PB bikes or another
seller or two that deals in overpriced vintage items. I would think from
a business model Ebay would never let you filter out sellers, that would
hurt their commission on said sales and the bottom line, which is all that
really matters for ebay and thier quasi-legal offshore bank known as
paypal. I dont know for sure that these items drive everything up, I mean i
see his crap hang out for months on ebay so its not like people are just
falling over themselves to buy it. When i list stuff i list it at real
prices and it sells in a day or two, my time is worth more than hoping
someone comes along and pays an inflated price, but i am not running a
business. Yeah its scummy to take advantage of people who dont know any
better but its capitalism, for better or worse.

Peter, you are correct, and I'm not aware that anyone is accusing him of
violating any rules or principles of honesty. But by setting prices to
obscenely high sums, and actually waiting for someone desperate enough to
pay them, he's effectively driving the entire market up.

I mentioned that I'd love to block him from my search results, and it's
because I'm not desperate enough to ever pay his prices and his listings
just end up being unwanted noise that I need to mentally filter out of my
search results since eBay won't let me filter them out informatically.
