Ortleib's hardware is mostly molded plastic/nylon, not something that is
likely to alarm sensors or TSA agents.

[RBW] Re: Caution: "Cuddle Bears"

2024-05-07 Thread Julian Westerhout
Jim,

On Cuddle Bears' FS post thread they decline to reveal their location, say
they won't reveal their name, and don't address their use of someone else's
photos in their FS thread. That thread also marks the first post by Cuddle
Bears (perhaps they are a regular poster under another name, but that in
and of itself is more than a bit peculiar...) -- those are all red flags
for me. I think Max has a point -- Caveat Emptor. Be warned. FWIW, I'd not
trust Cuddle Bears given the history of scammers -- this is a community --
new identities shrouded making an FS post shrouded in secrecy are not ideal
ways to be a good member of the community.

[RBW] Re: Kickstand bolt size

2024-04-22 Thread Julian Westerhout
You need an M10X 1.5 bolt --most likely 16mm or 20mm in length. If you
have the old bolt the best thing to do is to take it to your local hardware
store where you'll almost certainly find a bolt/nut sizer in the bulk
hardware aisle -- then find the allen headed bolt you need in the bolt
drawers and you'll be all set!

Assuming that the issue is wheel flop when parking or loading the bike,
consider the Steerstopper. https://steerstopper.com Not cheap, but works

basket (used for commuting and everyday riding) and we have one on our

Bernard,

I have used the A520 on several single bikes and on a tandem for many

aesthetic as well as aclipless pedal can They are also available used in
good shape for not much money, which is a bonus.

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
I watched the RAGBRAI film -- the actual ride is much better than the film
-- which was interesting, but focused more on the folks they followed than
on the RAGBRAI experience itself, IMHO.

RAGBRAI is worth doing at least once. Hoteling is pretty much not going to
happen -- although there is a a super-expensive charter that has a
tractor-trailers with micro rooms for the week. RVs seem to be an option
for some, too. The main RAGBRAI camping area is a madhouse, but cheap.
There are lots of private charters and clubs who offer various levels of
service -- some include options like tent and gear rental (even with
setup). I've used Brancel charters twice -- they're somewhere in the
middle -- good services, decent spots, their own shower trucks (a must,
IMHO), and I believe tent rental option. Brancel moves the bikes across the
state in a tractor trailer, but very well padded. I've gone with my 68 cm
Rivendell Atlantis with fenders, lights, etc. with zero issues. Our bikes
are a lot tougher than the fragile carbon bikes that predominate, and
they're used to babying those, so...:)

Some are wackos on the ride, but most are great, and it is a cultural
experience for sure. You'll meet many great and interesting folks, and your
Riv will be admired more than most -- my friends (all on carbon) got tired
of folks saying "nice bike" to me -- and the folks who actually know what
it is will really dig it -- and there are a few fellow Riv-riders you'll
probably see along they , too.

[RBW] Re: Studs for Winter Riding?

2023-12-13 Thread Julian Westerhout
I'm impressed and/or depressed at the sight of lovely Hunqs being ridden in
snow and ice. In the middle of Illinois we get snow and ice but always
accompanied by lots of road salt. I commute in those conditions on an old
Schwinn High Sierra set up as a 1 x 6 with Marathon winter tires with studs
-- and stop only when I have far better traction than the cars (that's when
i fear being squashed by a sliding SUV- on those rare days I'll take the
bus). The horrible road salts (and my twice-a-season cleaning of the old
Schwinn) are slowly eating the Schwinn alive , but it is sacrificial, and
my Rivs are not. I envy those of you who live in climes with little or no
salt on the roads -- I remember fondly the winters in SW Colorado in the
1990s when I lived there -- no salt, only cinders in the corners.

Bill,

Salmon Koolstop pads stop well, but can be noisy, especially if they hit
the rim flat or slightly toed out. It is possible/probable that after 5
months the pads have worn enough to change the way they hit the rim, and
need to be adjusted a bit to be slightly toe-in.

The 60 cm SimpleOne in AZ is being offered by the seller on Craigslist as
a frame/fork/bb/headset for $500 -- that is indeed a good deal.

2023-05-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
Leah,

Riding position and bike weight (and wheel weight) are a big part of it --
a lot less of a sail at speed compared to your Platypus. Lots of
relatively cheap "classic" vintage 1980s-1990s steel bikes with
performance like the Roadeo out there -- perhaps look for one near you to
try with minimal $$ -- or put the word out in the club -- likely a few
hanging in garages of your carbon-riding compatriots...

[RBW] Re: Getting in over my head

2023-05-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
Leah,

In answer to your question, yes, indeed. The most similar was about 16
years ago -- new to town, showed up to a club "ice cream" ride -- to me
that meant casual ride with a stop for ice cream -- but at the time that
particular ride was a fast paced 15 miles out to eat ice cream, then 15
miles back as fast as you could go. I did not know the roads, and had not
ridden much that year (move, new job, new-to-us fixer-upper house, etc.) --
it was a disaster. Luckily a very nice guy stayed back and rode with me --
and told me about the "mellow rides" the club also did, which were grand
social rides of the type I was looking for that year.

Still ride with the club -- I'm a bit faster, and there are no real
pseudo-racers left in the club -- that type of rider no longer rides with
the club, but on go-fast rides sponsored by a local shop.

It's all good -- fun to persevere as best you can (which in your case
sounds pretty darn well) and tell the stories

Re: [RBW] Re: Hobson Zingo adjustable lockring wrench for **$7.00**??

2023-05-06 Thread Julian Westerhout
I disagree with Garth,

I also bought one (to use as a S coupler wrench as well as a BB lockring
wrench) -- like the entire H-Z tool line it is not fancy (you'll not
mistake it for something from https://www.abbeybiketools.com/ ), but it is
decently made, and works well. I's say to me is is worth at least $15 if
not a couple of dollars more. If you're running a professional vintage bike
repair shop and use it several times a day you might want something more
robust, but for the other 99.97657% of us, this will do the trick, and
I'm very glad Rivendell has made it available.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Atlantis 2 sizing ? Inquiring about a local sale

2023-05-05 Thread Julian Westerhout
Eliot,

If it is local to you and that's near your preferred size go take a look --
many people do not accurately measure bike frames when selling them. The
joy of a local sale is that you can go look at it ride, it, examine it,
and, if you want, measure it yourself -- all of which will tell you much
more than we folks on the internet without photos or knowledge of the bike
could ever do!:)

[RBW] Re: Lighter than your Platypus

2023-04-29 Thread Julian Westerhout
Leah,

That video was great! I laughed, and cheered!:)

I'm 6'7" tall and weigh between 230 and 260 pounds (depending upon the
season) and am both amused and annoyed at the "how much does that bike
weigh?" and "How can you ride such a heavy bike?" comments I get when I
show up for a club ride on one of my Rivs or other steel bikes (I own no
carbon). My response is "Who cares? With me on it your carbon bike might
weigh 1 to 2% less than me on my bike -- and since this is a B-C club
(14-16 mph) ride and not the Tour de France it makes no appreciable
difference to my riding results, but to me the comfort of my bike is well
worth a possible few seconds over 50 miles." If it is someone I don't
know I then make an effort to cruise by on an uphill while trying to look
like I'm extending little effort.

I also get all the style points. Rode Ragbrai last year with a good friend
-- he rides carbon -- and every day lots of folks complimented my Atlantis,
many wanting photos. On the last day he remarked that no one ever said
anything about his bike, unlike me and the others on nice steel bikes
scattered among the thousands of lookalike carbon bikes.

I say, "Just Ride!"

The 7th edition (2 newer than the pirated version) is 9 British pounds, or

this list is not a substantial burden. Should anyone find the book useful
I'd suggest that they go ahead and purchase it.

Re: [RBW] Thanksgiving Morning Clem crash

2022-12-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
Jim,

I'm sorry to hear about your crash and I hope that you heal well and
quickly.

I'm also tall - ride a 65 cm Clem and 66-68 cm road bikes. What bars do you
have on the Clem now? I ride a 65 Clem with Chocomoose, they feel better
than the Bosco to me, but still are quite upright. I'm not so sure that
putting drops on the Clem will do that much in changing the center of
gravity unless you plan on making the bars overall a lot lower than the
saddle and always riding in the drops, and even then it's not going to make
that much of a difference. How much do you think drops will lower your COG?
maybe 6" or a foot? Will that make a real difference in a crash like that?
I'm not sure it would.

Had it rained a fair amount in the days prior to your ride and crash? If
not, there might have been more oil on the road, making it slippery. Texas
rain is, I'm guessing, not quite the same as western Oregon,
condition-wise. In the case of your crash, I'm not sure that drops would
make much difference in breaking a fibula or not -- after all, you can't
get much lower than that on the leg without breaking your foot, so the bar
height likely did not play a major role if at all.

In my experience getting back on the bike once healed and overcoming
stiffness caused by excessive caution (paired with as sensible level of
caution, still!) is the answer to post-crash jitters.

All the best,

Julian Westerhout

Re: [RBW] Re: Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2022-09-28 Thread Julian Westerhout
As that forest green All Rounder comes with a lot of extras -- front and
rear Nitto Camping racks, Son dynamo front wheel plus original front wheel,
and a pile of parts and accessories I think it is not a bad deal -- the
$3000 is an asking price -- one might do better -- at $2500 that package is
well worth it, IMHO, and at $3000 it is still not that bad -- given that
custom Riv frames are now $5000+ and a Taiwan Riv frameset other than a
Clem is $1700-1900 this not a bottom-feeding bargain, but if were the right
size and someone was looking for a great riding classic Riv this would be
hard to match -- and it looks like it has had very little use.

Re: [RBW] Swift Industries moving stock production to Asia

2022-01-23 Thread Julian Westerhout
It is interesting. I wish them all the luck in the world -- having worked
for a now-defunct small U.S. production outdoor clothing company in the
1990s I know these decisions can be tough. I fully understand the desire to
increase margins, but their statement "From stronger wages and benefits, to
exciting new career horizons, our move to overseas production intends to
elevate everyone’s work experiences through Swift" ignores the major
elephant in the room. Sure, "stronger wages" for their designers and
shippers in the U.S., perhaps, but less (and possibly ultimately no) work
for their U.S. sewers, and the reality that their Indonesian contract
sewers will be making FAR less than the U.S. sewers that they are
replacing...

The market is competitive -- and there are a number of U.S. bag makers at
their price point. It will be interesting to see what happens, especially
if they maintain their price points.

This would make a great poor man's Rivendell Rambouillet. I've owned both
and they feel like siblings to me.

This is a really nice Sequoia, with one semi-major caveat. It came from
specialized with two bottle mounts — one on the top of the down tube, the
other underneath the down tube. Someone prior to me in this bike’s life
drilled two holes in the seat tube for a third bottle, but they are not
quite straight, nor are they nut-serted or tapped. I put tape over the
holes and then put a Velo-Orange bottle mount in the proper spot (covers
the holes) — you can see it in the photos.

Overall I’d call the paint pretty good — there are a few scuffs and on one
fork leg and one seat stay the chrome is showing through a scrape. I am
including the seep-down cable end for the rear derailleur cable mount on
the chain stay.

This is a wonderful riding bike — I had one and sold it a few years
ago, missed it, so bought this one, and have recently acquired another
frame in the 68.5 cm size which fits me better. Due to the water bottle
mount issue I’m selling this at what I consider to be a bargain price.

[RBW] Re: PayPal now taxing goods & services transactions >$600

2021-10-09 Thread Julian Westerhout

Unless you are actually making a net profit on your bike and other sales
paid via Paypal this will have no impact other than requiring a bit more
carful record keeping. Even if you get a 1099 you can report a cost basis
equal to the 1099 amount if you sold for less than what you originally
bought the items for, so you will not pay any taxes. Of course you should
retain some sort of record of original purchase price versus what you sold
it for.

If someone is selling 10s of thousands of dollars of stuff through Paypal
and claims a high cost basis they should be fully prepared to back it up.
For most of us it is not a big deal -- the law regarding what is taxed has
not changed, just the reporting -- designed to catch those who are actually
engaged in a profit- making business but who might be evading taxes.

Joe,

Do you have photos and prices for these bikes? By my count you're selling
somewhere between 4 and 15 bikes of various types and conditions -- it's
not entirely clear to me which bikes you're actually selling. Taking photos
and making a list with prices might help sell them.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Mouseproof handlebar bag

2021-04-12 Thread Julian Westerhout
FWIW, the only way to "mouseproof" a handlebar bag of any sort that is used
on a bike shored in a rural shed is to remove it from the bike and take
inside your house, where, presumably, the mice do not reside.

If you ever carry food or other comestibles in your bag the smells will
attract them even after the food is removed -- even through a zipper or a
roll up flap. They'll then chew holes in your bag to get in if there's not
a convenient opening, and then you're done for.

:)

[RBW] Re: FS: Spectrum lugged tandem frameset

2021-04-06 Thread Julian Westerhout

Ed, that's a spectacular bike -- and now that Spectrum has closed, a lugged
modern tandem like this is more rare than ever -- very few builders will
undertake that job, and those that will will justifiably charge a lot more
that hat this one will cost someone used.

Did you guys replace it with something else? Please tell me that you are
still riding a tandem -- my wife/stoker and I both enjoy your stoker's
Chasing Mailboxes blog -- especially the tandem content!

If it were our size I'd be all over this -- it will be a treat for someone.

Are these 650b or 700c? 130 or 135 rear spacing? 7-9 speed cassette body or

Re: [RBW] New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread Julian Westerhout

The navigation is a bit tricky -- the three bar menu shortcut is sort of
semi-standard on phone apps, but not so much on websites. It took me a bit
before I figured it out. I asked my wife to look at the page and to find
the navigation menu -- she scrolled and looked for a bit, then said "there
isn't one." Had she scrolled all the way down she might have seen the
links, or perhaps if the three bars stayed pegged to the top of the page
she might have noticed them, but as it is she did not -- it takes some
savvy and of persistence -- not sure that's the goal. It's more minimal on
the landing page, but less obvious and less user friendly IMHO. It is, on
the other hand, appears to be trying to be trendy and "hip" -- which,
ironically, seems antithetical to the position of Riv as a company. YMMV
-- I'm just a grumpy middle-aged guy in the frozen tundra of the midwest,
so...

Re: [RBW] Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-01-20 Thread Julian Westerhout

Roberta,

I have an older Ultimate/Feedback Pro rack, and I have a friend who has the
current Sport model, which is their more affordable version.

We've also both used the Park deluxe home stand a fair amount while
volunteering at our local bike co-op.

The clamp mechanism and adjustability on both of the Feedback models is far
better than the Park, IMHO. The three leg design of the Feedback models is
also more stable and tip resistant if you set it up to balance a heavy
bike.

The major difference I see between the two Feedback models is beefiness and
a bit better clamp. If you are using it for typical home use then the
Feedback Sport model is fine -- about the same cost as the Park Deluxe and
I think it is a better design.

[RBW] Re: WTB: non-disc Phil rear cassette hub 135mm for Bombadil

2021-01-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
FWIW, I'm not sure of too many bike part makers who service/supply parts
for things that they sold 12+ years ago.

A number of years ago I had a tandem wheel with one of White's early Daisy
hubs that had an issue -- no dice in getting parts. Small makers, evolving
designs, and time all make that a bit tough.

This issue is not just limited to small makers, though -- the big ones are
worse in my experience.

Just try getting parts for Shimano gear made just 3 or 4 years ago. ;)

Campy historically has been pretty good about supporting older designs, but
just went through an interesting experience trying to get some parts to
refurbish a set of Campy Record brifters of similar age -- no parts
available from Campy, but did find a small shop that had the parts.

The good news is that a moderately cared for Phil hub is likely to last for
many miles and many years, so not too much of a worry.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone tried the new Tosco bar?

2020-12-01 Thread Julian Westerhout
Joe, do you remember roughly how much less rise they had? Also, were the
grip portions on the Bullmoose version tilted down or roughly straight?
I'm considering them instead of the Bullmoose Boscos on our HHH -- I'm
looking for something a bit lower and with a bit more flare.

[RBW] Re: 71cm Homer for sale!?

2020-10-24 Thread Julian Westerhout
Wow! That is really a tall bike -- makes my 67-68 cm bikes look puny!
 ;)

A decent Riv-standard build, with a few minor cosmetic issues -- at a $3750
ask I think the seller is perhaps a bit too ambitious, but on the other
hand 71 cm frames are not exactly common, so...

I book marked it out of curiosity, but like Kai, this one will not find a
home with me.

[RBW] Re: Want to Buy or Trade for Brown Riv back o bike bags (set) and Steiner headset tool

2020-10-23 Thread Julian Westerhout
Mark,

I managed to snag one on the second round of these -- it is a truly lovely
tool that works extremely well. I had a home made headset press made with
large washers, nuts, and all thread, which was functional but finicky. It
is now at my local co-op -- I donated it. I've used the Stein on two
headsets so far...Wow! It is worth the wait. Sooner or later supply
will catch up with demand, or you'll just happen to be on the Riv site when
they get restocked or juat after (which is what happened to me).

[RBW] Re: A brand new Rambouillet made its way to my house...

2020-10-06 Thread Julian Westerhout
Mike,

I ry to keep my parts stash moderately well organized, but somehow things
still seem to wander into odd boxes. I discovered a set of bar end shifters
I forgot I had while searching for parts this weekend -- they were in the
brake levers bin. Into the Ram parts pile they went.

I think I have most of the parts I'll need aside from handlebars. Need a
set of Nitto Noodles in a 48.

Congratulations on your acquisition, build, and ride. Makes we want to
hurry up on mine!

[RBW] Re: A brand new Rambouillet made its way to my house...

2020-10-04 Thread Julian Westerhout
That's a mystery to me as well.

I am sorting through the parts stash right now to see what I'll need to
buy. It will be built soon-ish, likely by the new year at the latest.

Of course, the original owner might have had similar intentions 15 years
ago ... I wanted to ask what happened, but somehow it did not seem
appropriate, especially as he waffled a bit on whether or not he really
wanted to sell it. :0

[RBW] Re: Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Julian Westerhout
Joel,

Glad they were only close calls! :(

I use a dynamo hub with headlight and taillight on at all times on the
bikes i ride most -- plus a blinky in the back, and an orange safety
triangle hanging from my commuter's saddle. Pretty dorky, but hopefully
pretty visible.

I like dynamos plus LED lights because then I always have lights without
ever worrying about charging, etc.

[RBW] Re: V-brake to fender clearance on Appaloosa

2020-08-01 Thread Julian Westerhout
This will not solve your problem now, but Grant is working on a longer
V-brake -- Will confirmed in an email that it is still in the works, but
some time off. So someday perhaps you'll be able to order a Silver V-Brake
with adequate clearance...

Until then this list of V-brake lengths might be useful
 https://www.gravelbike.com/v-brake-arm-lengths/

As Eric mentioned the Tektro 849AL is the length champion, but is pretty
scarce. They are available for about $17.50 a set here:

https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/branded-bicycle-parts/contec/contec-bicycle-brakes/contec-brake-set-v-brake/contec-v-brake-br-849al-120mm-arms-silver/

but shipping to CONUS is as much as the brakes!

[RBW] Re: HHH ride report

2020-07-23 Thread Julian Westerhout
Mark,

We like the HHH a lot. It is indeed a different beast than our Bilenky,
which is a 650b S coupled drop-bar tourer. The HHH is more upright, and
better for rides like this one. we also use it in town (going on a bike
club ice cream ride on it tonight). On the road it still performs
reasonably well, if not quite as fast as our Bilenky (much of which I put
down to the riding position), but it has major fun factor. It rides well --
I also have a Clem H -- it is roughly analogous.

It has a Shutter dynamo front hub, a Velocity tandem rear hub, Alex DM24
rims. Tires are Maxxis Re-Fuse 650 x 2.0 (their mixed labeling) -- they're
great for a mix of road and generally hard pack/gravel type riding. The
wheels were supplied by Riv. We were in the first batch -- bought most of
the parts from Riv, built it up myself. Not too tricky if you're a
confifdent mechanic.

That's a Northern Water Snake. Harmless, but looks a bit like a
Cottonmouth, which is not.

It is a pretty corridor along the Illinois River in the middle of

1900s, which have nice old downtowns that are still semi-vibrant.

COVID canceled our plan to tour in the UK on our Bilenky tandem this
summer, so in partial compensation today we went for a day ride on the
Illinois and Michigan Canal from Lasalle to Marseilles, Il and back on our
Rivendell HHH -- about 45 miles. Nice ride, even if the path is very poorly

Horizontally between the middle of the two vertical-ish tubes (a sort of

measure and i’ll do so. One of the photos has the deat tube withj a
