Re: [RBW] Silver Hub sound

“Something a touch louder than Deore” is how I’d describe the Silver hub.

I have one on my Sam.
They have great engagement after coasting. Not as much “slip” as other hubs.

I’ve really liked it.

Have ridding a couple times with the RX100 in a stem pouch and that's probably the best carry option I've used so far. Ir maybe that sort of bag worn on a belt, or...a fanny pack. For carrying phone/cameras, I've been using one of the Routewerks handlebar bags for several years. That looks really really practical. I need to do a deep dive into getting a new handlebar bag. Would like a bigger one and one with a quick release so it's less fiddly to not leave my bag behind when stopping somewhere while riding around town. Using mustache handlebars complicates things a little, but deciding to go with pink accents even more so.Think for larger cameras with interchangeable lenses, even if a relatively small one with a not-big lens, is gonna be best carried in a bigger handelbar bag. Using a shoulder strap with a stabilizer strap works well too, but I just don't want the weight on me, even if it's not all that much. So far, for the RX100, a stem pouch has been pretty good, and I've stuck a folded innertube at the bottom of the bag to raise the floor and make it easier to get the camera out while pedaling. But this definitely won't take an MILC, unless it's an especially small body and especially flat pancake lens.Another camera that I wish I had to try out for carrying while riding is a Panasonic LX100. Pavement riding is a broad category, and there are many different modes and types of it. Will it be "practical" pavement riding (like commuting or hauling stuff from the supermarket), relaxed cruising on a weekend morning, or racing in a group? Will you occasionally venture off road? All of the above? One of the things that makes Rivs so wonderful is their versatility. This is what I value about Rivs above all else, which is why I gravitate to the various All Rounders. An Atlantis, for example, can be set up many different ways and it will be brilliant in the various guises. Swap a handlebar or tires (either wider or narrower, or to or from slicks and knobbies) and you have a bike with different character suited for a different type of riding, all while retaining the Rivendell feel. If you want a "road" bike strictly speaking, there are a lot of great suggestions in this thread. It's the best bar we have for that." I really like these bars, as I can grab the flats when going fast, downhill, or against wind, and the swept-back part is super comfortable otherwise. It's not a super wide bar; never feels out of place even on narrower paths or in traffic. I bought the Appa as a mixed-terrain bike, as a true allrounder, and I right now have a rack on it (and fenders, soon--just got my Velo Orange wavys delivered). I mostly ride it on smooth roads, and it's a fun bike for that, even up hills. Roadbike? No, not nimble and light to go on group fast rides, but totally smooth and comfortable for long rides.  If I had two Riv bikes, I might get a Ram or a Roadini in addition to the App - but for just one bike that can do all kinds of things really well, the Appa is wonderful! On Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 10:28:06 AM UTC-8 pi...@gmail.com wrote:I own a 54cm Roadini (for myself) and a 50cm (for my son who will soon outgrow his Salsa Journeyman). campground and the owner runs it entirely on donations. Clean bathrooms, hot
showers, picnic tables, what else could you ask for? Please donate if you stay
here. Our plan today was to ride load-less and ease our way into
the trip. We arrived at Spicer Ranch a little after 10am and were biking by

There is endless gravel to ride out here and you could easily spend the day
exploring mine to mine. The road is pretty tough in places, but this is how it
will be the entire trip. The excitement of beginning our adventure (and being
unloaded) had us riding fast. We had great views riding toward Grapevine
Mountains on amazingly packed gravel. I would get a flat somewhere along here
but patched it up and moved on. The views would continue but the road would deteriorate into
more sand than gravel and had us pushing on a few occasions. Ran took a spill during
a moment of lapsed attention when his tire hit the side of a wash. Luckily it
was a slow fall and Ran would ride away with minor scratches. Later on in the
day we hit some washboards and I was going too fast and I got a pinch flat.
Patched that too, but the pinch flat happened right next to the valve and the
patch didn’t hold. Replaced the whole tube just before Rhyolite. This whole
time we saw nobody else on the trails.Rhyolite Ghost town is very interesting and they have a lot
of eccentric statues/sculptures. Worth a visit here if you find yourself in the
area. There were a lot of tourists here and it was little jarring after
spending the whole day by ourselves.

The night caught us and to try to get back to camp quicker,
we abstained from the gravel and rode back on highway 95. This was very
unpleasant as it’s a 2-lane highway with 70 mph speed limits. Most everybody
passed us with as much room as they could spare, and we could always hop onto
the gravel sides if we needed. Once back at Spicer Ranch, we set up camp, ate
our dinners, and all fell into peaceful sleep.Day 2: Spicer Ranch à Chloride City à Furnace Creek à Echo CanyonTotal Mileage: 66 MilesMax Speed: 34.5mphAverage: 8.7mphThis was a physically hard day!  We wanted more gravel riding today, so we decided to take Chloride City Road to meet up with Death Valley Road. The road to Chloride City is all uphill, riding on somewhat loose gravel, and many parts so sandy some pushing was needed again. The scenery did not disappoint though! Mike found a license plate from 1932! We harbored thoughts of going to see Chloride City Ghost Town, but upon seeing that Chloride City was another 2000 feet of elevation gain and having just climbed a very difficult 1500 feet, we opted to skip it.We thought we were going to be golden once we got to the turnoff to go down, but the decent from Chloride City road is difficult. Thank goodness it was downhill because otherwise we would have had to push our bicycles 50% more. It was extremely sandy and only the cars with the fattest of tires would be safe driving this path.Once we hit Daylight Pass Road it was jarring to fly down pavement to Hells Gate Viewpoint (my max speed was almost 35 mph and I’m sure I pumped the breaks). We snapped a few photos then turned left and went down Beatty Cutoff Road. Again, we would fly down this road (dropping 2500 feet!) hitting Highway 190.Riding on Highway 190 wasn’t the greatest with cars zooming past us, but we got lucky and hit some construction. The construction turned the road into one way traffic with timed/predictable traffic. We would ride taking up a whole lane knowing nobody would come up behind us for a good 10 or so minutes. Then when we heard the pack of cars coming we would ride single file for a few minutes until they all passed and then take up

I'm fired up to tackle the 300 in March.  TL/DRI was signed up for the 2/24 200k, in preparation for the 3/9 300k event, but a family gathering got arranged on that weekend and I had to pivot to the 2/10 event.  It's fortunate that SFR has so many events, especially in the Winter months.  The Russian River 200k route looks like two lollipops. Unlike most SFR Marin County rides, it doesn't start at the Golden Gate Bridge.  Instead it starts at the end of Lucas Valley Road in San Rafael.  The "stem" of the first lollipop follows Lucas Valley Road all the way to Nicosio. Then you go counter clockwise around the first half of the first lollipop hitting the tip of the stem of the second lollipop in Fallon.  The second stem ends in Valley Ford, and then we go counter clockwise again up through Occidental, Rio Vista, Guerneville and alongside the Russian River.  That second lollipop loop meets up with the Pacific Coast and curls back down to Valley Ford, retraces stem #2 and returns to the coast along Tomales Bay before meeting back up with stem #1 in Nicosio, and it's back Lucas Valley Road to where you started.  It was a gorgeous route and a splendid day.  After a ton of heavy rain, there was a lot of evidence of it having been stormy, and lots of wet roads, but no rain today. At the start at 7AM temperatures were in the low 40s, so I wore bib shorts plus knee warmers.  I wore a wool base layer, and a thermal SFR long sleeve jersey, with my rain jacket over that and a reflective vest on top of that.  I wore some light full finger gloves, and over socks over my road shoes.  It dropped to the mid 30s in some of the valleys and my fingers were in pain from the cold.  I was just barely warm enough on the feet, and for a minute I wished I had worn a buff or similar to pull over my nose and ears.  By 10AM it warmed up enough that it was no longer a problem, and in the afternoon a lot of the layers came off as the temperatures got up to the mid 50s.  My Legolas was originally a 1x10, but I changed it out to a 2x10 late last year.  I used It on my birthday to summit Mount Diablo, with Barlow Pass Extralight road tires.  The bike did great on that ride, but after 55 miles, my saddle was not comfortable.  I've got an ultra lightweight Selle Italia saddle on there, because it's a cyclocross race bike!  Races last an hour and you're running part of the time.  Who cares if your saddle is comfortable?  The night before I swapped out my Gilles Berthoud Soulor leather saddle, and I'm glad I did.  My hindquarters handled the day without any objections.  The bike did perfectly.  Fast and nimble, but easy to control.  No mechanicals and no flats.  I hammered the last 40km to just get under the wire at 9 hours.  Strava gives me 8 hours 40 minutes moving.  My fitness is progressing nicely.  I've lost about 12 pounds of pudge I didn't need, and my general strength from Orange Theory Fitness seems to be paying dividends.  Despite a couple nagging aches and pains, the body did well today.  Another last minute bike setup change was I decided to run Look style pedals, instead of SPDs.  My left ankle has been bugging me and I feel a lot more planted on the solid wide platform of Look pedals.  That choice served me well all day, with no foot, pedal or ankle issues.  Nutrition-wise I did nothing in preparation.  I had a biggish breakfast and packed no food.  In Valley Ford I bought a chocolate chip cookie, a package of cashews and a bag of Hairdo ginger candy.  On my second trip to Valley Ford I restocked water and had a slice of Lemon Cake.  That all did fine, and I didn't actually get into the cashews until after the ride.  I did my normal Four 50k sections.  Section 1 I took it easy and warmed up.  Section 2 I pushed harder.  Section 3, I dug deep and got after it.  Section 4 would normally be a mellow victory lap to get you home, but I really wanted to make 9 hours so I hammered, and it worked out.  A couple of the "fast group" riders who went off the front at the start were still at the finish when I got there, so I wasn't far behind them.  Anyway, I'm pleased with my ride and feel ready for the 300 next month. I do NOT intend to use my new RoadeoRosa on the 300, but I'm holding an outside shot that I may use it for the 600.  Bill LindsayEl Cerrito, CA

Really interesting points Ted.Thanks for writing them up!k.On Jan 9, 2024, at 6:12 AM, Bill Schairer wrote:Ted,I love your explanation!  My niece is a college crew coach and she also cycles.  I will have to ask her about "swing."Bill SSan DiegoOn Monday, January 8, 2024 at 7:15:31 AM UTC-8 Ted Durant wrote:Not to be overly contrarian, but ...Planing is a terrible word for the phenomenon in question, which is when the flex characteristics of the bike are such that the energy stored in deformation (of the frame and all the attached parts) is efficiently returned to power the rear wheel during the lower power part of the pedaling cycle. When a boat planes, it rises out of the water, resulting in a large reduction in coefficient of drag. The equivalent on a bicycle would be the development of a vacuum around the bike and rider at a certain speed. That would be fun, but it's certainly not what's happening on earth. Ironically, there is a well-known and used term in Jan's back yard, for the exact phenomenon he is trying to describe. Rowers have long used the word "swing" to describe a shell and oars whose flex characteristics synchronize well with their strokes, allowing them to go faster for a given power output. Jan claims that bikes that "plane" magically increase a rider's power output, but the reality is that bikes that swing well waste less of the rider's  power. A better way to put it might be that such a bike puts more of the rider's power to the back wheel. The flex characteristics of the frame are important, of course, but the entire bicycle (and its rider) is a system of springs and in such a system the softer springs affect flex first, with the stiffer springs becoming more relevant as the forces increase. For most of us on this list, we don't spend a lot of time putting enough power into the pedals to get to the point where frame flexibility is significantly tested. At 57kg, I can tell you that I rarely put out that kind of power. I have a brevet bike made of .7/.4/.7 standard diameter tubing, and I can make that frame flex, but not for very long. That bike rides on 42mm tires at about 33 psi, and the tires are definitely the soft springs in that system.I don't attribute aluminum, or stiffer frames in general, to an increased focus on cadence. Track cyclists have always been obsessed with cadence. With the introduction of multiple gear systems for road biking came the opportunity to develop notions of "ideal" cadence. Note that when Jan talks about frames "planing" for him, he almost always talks about it working for his preferred cadence. Stiff frames, in fact, reduce the importance of cadence, as they reduce the contribution of the frame to swing (for a given power input). For me, cadence is only important when going uphill or into a headwind. It is important because I need enough momentum in my feet to keep a steady speed. Without that momentum, I am repeatedly accelerating during the power phase and decelerating during the non-power phase. That is terribly inefficient. And that is why, as discussed in the recent thread on gearing, it is so important to have low gears in steep hills. Long before aluminum frames were a twinkle in Gary Klein's eyes, cyclists talked about "staying on top of a gear" when climbing. It meant to maintain a fast enough cadence that you were pedaling smoothly, maintaining a constant speed. Cyclists have also long talked about using smaller gears and a higher cadence to "work your heart, not your legs." So, I also don't have _the_ answer to why some bikes seem/feel/are faster than others. Many of my best Strava times on climbing segments and my best 100km time are on my Heron prototype, which is a road frame but has the heavy rear stays from the touring frame. You can feel the weight of the stays (and the weight of the old SunTour freewheel) when you pick up the bike. Maybe it's just that I have so much invested in that bike that it inspires me to push a little harder. I tend to believe Jan's hypothesis that stiffness in the downtube and chainstays and flex in the top tube, relative to each other, help a bike swing in a way that returns energy to the rear wheel. Interestingly, old Reynolds tube sets were always spec'd that way, with thinner walls in the top tube than in the down tube. Somewhere along the way they switched to the Columbus standard, where top tube and down tube walls are the same. The Heron Road bikes have .1mm thinner top tube walls than down tube, and my prototype has extra heavy stays, so there you go.Ted DurantMilwaukee WI USA

Black ankle socks with catchy "Route 66" graphic and late 1980s/1990s Shimano 3-strap SPD shoes and custom cycling cap from Little Packet, no longer in business.* Very tastefully converted from a very nice pair of Nordstrom wool dress flannels with nylon wind panels on inside front and replaceable matched-color wear panel on seat and crotch.I have to say: I've spent considerable bucks on very many supposedly purpose-designed riding pants, knickers and long pants, and I have never had a pair of cycling pants that fit as well and are so well adapted to pedaling as converted dress pants, with the high waist and roomy -- not baggy; not 1950s -- cut. They come up high enough in back that you don't have that continual exposed skin anxiety, and they just feel much more comfortable. So many knickers and pants designed for cycling, so they say, are simply cut too low in the back and just feel uncomfortable, and I'm very trim. Re: [RBW] Roadini or Homer

2023-10-12 Thread Keith Paugh
These are really great posts. Thanks for cataloging your experiences guys!I for one would LOVE to see photos of all three of those bikes (The Indy Fab, the Roadini, and the new Homer) if you have a moment to post them.k.On Oct 12, 2023, at 8:52 AM, ShumotoSoundRoom wrote:I own three steel bikes: A 2003 Independent Fabrication Independence (their full touring frame, designed by Mike Flanigan), a low trail rando frame with 650b wheels made by a small builder, and a 2020 Roadini.  The Indy Fab is a miraculous bike for loaded touring; incredibly stable with full panniers and surprisingly light and quick when stripped, given its stout tubing.  I rode it across the US in 2004, and it has seen many, many miles since.  I have converted my rando frame to function as  errand runner, for I determined over the course of thousands of miles, that I just don't like the feel of 650 wheels.  Since acquiring the Roadini in 2020, I've ridden nothing else.  It felt, in so many ways, like the perfect bike for my needs.  Exactly what I wanted from a "road + gravel" bike.  The vast majority of my riding is done alone, on some combination of gravel and road, rides falling between 20-70 miles.  I'm not as fast as I was in my twenties, thirties, or forties, but I keep a fairly brisk pace.  I generally ride with a lightweight frame bag (made by Swift Industries) with no other bags or racks on the bike.  I'm running Paul centerpulls which allows me to comfortably fit Rene Herse 38's, my favourite tires to date.  Until last week, I sort of figured that the Roadini would be the bike that I would ride for the rest of my life.  But then, after a short fifteen mile ride on mixed surfaces, on a different bike, everything changed.  My wife and I finally caved and bought our son a great bike, as he is almost sixteen and wishes to join me on longer rides.  He has just surpassed my height, so we bought him an A. Homer Hilsen as it will fit him longer if he keeps growing, and it seemed the most versatile of choices.  After the build was finished, I took the bike out to make sure that everything was working properly, and within a few miles, I quickly determined that this was without question, my favourite bike that I had ever ridden in my life.  No, it did not feel as quick as my Roadini, but it didn't feel as sluggish as my unloaded Indy Fab; which struck me as odd, given that the chain stays are MUCH longer on the Homer.  The comfort level was astounding.  There are moments on the Roadini where I hit a smooth stretch of recently paved road, the feeling of flying is accentuated and I think to myself, "this is such a glorious sensation!"  The Homer felt that way the entire ride.  On both road and gravel, I felt like I was simply gliding.  The steering felt a bit slower and the bike didn't accelerate as quickly, but the stability and comfort were so incredible that I just didn't care.  I live in New England and some of the old gravel roads can be rough, such that I normally lift off the saddle over bumps and hold the bars lightly.  Not so with the Homer.  It was, to my great surprise, even smoother than my Indy Fab.  I should note that I was using the same Rene Herse 38's.  Anyway, I could carry on and on, but I just wish to say that I find the two quite different.  The bike also feels noticeably bigger (the frame is a 58) which may also contribute.  To shorten what could be a long story, I came home, walked in the house, and ordered a Homer, which is set to arrive today.  Once I build it up, I intend to sell the Roadini.  After about thirty years of 3000mi annually, the Homer was instantly the bike that I'd dreamt of for a long time.  You can't really go wrong with either.  To me the question would come down to this: do you want to maximize the feeling of quickness or gliding comfort?  For me, there was no comparison.  With the Tektro side pulls and all of the same parts, I cannot tell a weight difference between the two; perhaps the Paul brakes and extra bits nullify the frame savings.  Anyway, I was in a similar decision dilemma as you a few years back and went with the Roadini, and while it all worked out in the end, the Homer was the right choice for me.  Good luck!   On Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 1:08:07 PM UTC-4 kwi...@weimar.edu wrote:The Homer will be 'heavier' or stiffer in terms of feel than the Roadini; I actually find the Roadini too stiff for my riding style.KarlOn Thu, Sep 23, 2021 at 7:38 AM Bones wrote:I know these comparisons have come up frequently, but here is my particular situation:I had a 62 Hillborne. It serves the purpose the Hillborne was meant to serve (the Hillborne always felt a bit too bulky for my intended purpose... which is primarily riding on roads with light loads). Sometimes I feel like I overshot with the Roadini though, and the Homer would be the best choice. I

It's my first and I hope this meets your rigorous group standards for what a "ride" consists of. For me, a ride is a ride - short or long, intense or easy, fast or party pace. Most of my rides these days are with my family (wife and 3 year old son). I am reporting on our week of rides vacationing on the Island of Oléron, of the coast of France (we live inland near Fontainebleau, so Oléron is only a few hours' drive away). Oléron is the second largest Island (after Corsica) in Metropolitan France. It's got a fairly mild climate in winter and summer and the main industries (if you want to call them that) are oyster farming, salt production, and wine growing. So, if you like quiet beaches, bikes, white wine, and oysters, it's not the worst place to spend your vacation. We took our 2 Clems, a Burley Bee trailer, and our kid's bike on the bike of the car and drive the 4 and half hours to get to the island, sitting in traffic to get across the bridge until we finally made it to a small BnB in the village of Dolus. We then parked the car and didn't touch it for the rest of the week. All our trips around the island were by bike and it is almost a perfect island for bike exploring on bike paths or dedicated bike lanes (there's only a few places we found where you can't avoid going onto a big main road with not shoulder). There are over 130 km of dedicated bike paths on the 30x8km island. The weather was less than stellar the first day we arrived - it was raining most of the drive to the island, and though the rain had stopped, it was cold and dreary the first day. That first evening we rode down to La Chevalerie for an "Oyster festival" though, I think it was just an ad hoc restaurant that one of the oyster farms set up for people vacationing on the island. Either way, I had the best oysters I've ever had, really great moules frites (which, we probably ate at least once a day while we were there), and decent bottle of local Pineau. We shivered a bit sitting outside with our meal, but once we were back on our bikes and riding through the cold night air, it was extremely pleasant riding weather. The rest of the week , it was warm, sunny and yeah, more/less perfect for riding and swimming. Our rides consisted mostly of riding la Cotinière or St. Pierre d'Oléron a few km away, or a slightly longer ride to St. Trojan les Bains in the south (to ride the famous little train that's there) or go see Fort Boyard from Boyardville. The routes to St Trojan or Boyardville go through tons of oyster-beds, and it's nice rustic scenery to ride through. The island is almost perfectly flat, so there's not much elevation to speak of - most of our rides were meandering around, stopping to look at horses, take photos, or check google maps again because we had gotten off track. Most of the bike routes are gravel or paved, but a few of them went through small forest tracks and we found ourselves in a bit of mud the first couple nights riding back in the dark after dinner (Google maps has some fun ideas about bike routes - definitely can take you off the beaten path, sometimes right into someone's garden, but always an adventure. After a few er, um... mistakes, we starting paying better attention to the bike path signs and stuck to them a bit more closely). Our pace was probably around 20 km/hour on average, not fast riding for sure, but definitely taking in the scenery. And with a kid on board, the joy is exploring, rather than fast riding anyway. He kept up his own though, riding a few kilometers here and there when we were in dedicated bike paths and getting in the trailer or the child seat for the longer rides. And Oléron proved to be ruggedly beautiful, blue-collar, calm, with lots to explore: everything you'd want in a family vacation by bike. Anyway, that's my "ride report". And here are a few photos.cheers,John

I'm thinking I'll do velocity cliffhangers with a SON up front and a nice rear hub. The rear is not yet totally decided as I like quiet hubs but there are not many options in rim brake, 36-40h hubs these days. I've got an onyx silent hub on my crust and love it but they only go up to 32h and I'd prefer 36 or 40 as I'm a big dude. Which is why I'm thinking about a white industry (loud as they come) rear hub in 36 or 40h. Anyway. I'd like to hear about your preferred wheel builders.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-22 Thread Keith Paugh
Agreed.
I love the Harvest/Dark Gold colors, and the old Appolossa Mustard is so
lovely that if one ever surfaced in my size, I would recklessly snatch it
up on principle.

Normally green is my go to, but I was ever-so-slightly disappointed that
LimeOlive had made its way to another model so soon.
I thought we might get something new.

That being said, I would agonize over the perfect hue.
I'd love it... but don't envy being in charge of it.

Re: [RBW] Compact Half-Step plus Granny gearing

2023-02-26 Thread Keith Paugh
This is really cool. Interesting ideas at play.I want to see it in action.k.On Feb 26, 2023, at 9:49 AM, lconley wrote:Among other changes that I am making to my Bombadil, I am converting to my favorite triple gearing: a half-step plus granny. The idea behind a half-step plus granny is that the two large chainrings on a triple are close in size so that you can split the difference (half-step) between any two sprockets on the rear. The inner chainring on the front is a small bailout or "granny" gear. This strategy works best when you have a limited number of rear cogs - fairly unnecessary when you have 11 or 12 rear cogs. The rear cogs should maintain as constant of a % difference (step) as possible - this means that the number of teeth difference between cogs will increase as the cogs get larger.I had a Sugino triple on the front - I kept the stainless steel 24t granny and used TA Zephyr 39 and 42 middle and outer chainrings (from Peter White). The 7 speed freewheel is an NOS Suntour New Winner 12-14-16-18-21-26-34 that I bought a few years back for this purpose (they seem to have gotten very pricey as of late). This gives me 18 distinct, non-overlapping gears from 19 to 95. You do have to double shift (front and rear) sometimes to get the gear you want. When I was younger, I taped my gear ratios on top of the stem.I use 7 speed freewheels for the rear hub for the same reason that Rivendell is looking into producing 7 speed cassette hubs - less wheel dish means a stronger wheel. So far I have acquired 3 Phil Wood rear hubs that were either 7 speed 135mm, or that I converted to 7 speed 135mm - a 36 hole, 40 hole and my latest - an NOS 48 hole. The 48 hole is going on the Bombadil to replace the 40 on it now.One kind of odd thing about this is that the chainrings have ramps and pins, but the freewheel has none. I expect it to shift just fine. Rear derailleur is all silver Sun XCD and the front will be either the all silver IRD Alpina-d already on the bike or an all silver IRD Sub-C - whichever plays best with the chainring combination. The chain is a stainless steel Wippermann 8 speed that I have ultrasonically cleaned and Molten Speed Waxed.Bar end shifters will be either Dura-Ace 8 speed or Rivendell Silver 2. If the indexing works with the Dura-Ace shifters - they will be used, otherwise friction will be the Silver 2.LaingDelray Beach FL

Re: [RBW] Intense Swiss alpine descents cycling video

2023-02-09 Thread Keith Paugh
This is great. Fun to watch.
Beautiful country. I love it when a place is unmistakable for any other.

Reminded me of the Claude Lelouch film Renez-vous

Another very different type of "riding" mind you.
Thanks for sharing!

This is well outside the style of bikes and riding we discuss around here

discussed or shared before.

https://youtu.be/0GkDEmalrRc

It's from Safa Brian, a former bicycle messenger with a popular cycling
YouTube channel. And you might have seen in some of Terry B's videos (also
NSFRBW). The video collects some of his long descents from a trip to
Switzerland in 2022.

There are beautiful vistas, impressive roads, cows, bridges, cobbles, fog,
mist, chateaux, tunnels and stunning mountains. There is crazy speed,
carbon bikes, dangerous maneuvering, fast music and a crash.

I've watched this twice in the past few months and find it totally
mesmerizing, it's a blast. I've read about all of these passes in Jobst
Brandt's alpine ride diaries so it's nice to have some moving pictures of
these places.

At over twenty minutes there's plenty to see and there are some nice scenes
intercut with what looks like 8mm film footage and alpine b-roll.

Too crazy for you? A fun viewing experience? I don't think I'll ever ride
anything like this but I've found it a real pleasure to watch.

First of all, When I finished watching the video I felt that “oh this video should be shared with English speaking Rivendell fans(means this "RBW Owners Bunch) too” so I started translating the video briefly. Then I found someone commented that “Subtitles please!” and Blue Lug replied “we’d love to but at the moment we are too busy so we need a help”. I thought that “why don’t I do that?”It took me a week to complete subtitling between my work, playing with my baby, feeding my baby, putting my baby to sleep, sleeping with my baby, chatting with my wife and commuting by my Platypus. It was a really fun work to do related to not only the things I’m passionate about which are languages and bicycles but also favourite people who are Rivendell and Blue Lug!I would be very happy that if I could be a help for Rivendell and Blue Lug. Ultimately I hope people who watch the subtitled video will find how Rivendell bicycles are amazing even better than before, that would be amazing.Link to the video↓https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx83uMhIgKAMasa

I've attached a packing list that's accurate to the best of my memory. It's a lot. I'd also love to go rackless. I tried to mount the Chest from my saddle but couldn't get it all worked out. So a series of rides and ideas came together and I booked a primitive cabin for Monday night, earlier this week. I decided to make a loop of some fire roads I checked out in September with a stop for the night in the middle. Once I made the reservation I reached out to Paul R. to see if he’d like to join. To my surprise he was game for a Monday night out. Temperatures Monday were predicted to peak in the high 40s and dip down well below freezing up on the mountain where we’d be staying. Rain and snow were in the cards for our return on Tuesday and warming up to 38º. With bad weather and short days in mind we met at the cracking hour of 11:00 AM. We would have preferred to start earlier but obligations sometimes call for a late start or no start at all. I unloaded my Appaloosa and did a final check of my luggage and gear. Paul arrived with his XL Susie Longbolts shoved in the back seat of his Honda. Even with the front wheel removed the wheelbase barely allowed the back doors to close. By 11:50 we were on our way, with temperatures comfortably in the high 40s. The first eight miles took us through beautiful rolling countryside with cattle grazing, old brick houses on hills and the last rusty brown vestiges of crumbling foliage. We were on a mix of pavement and well-maintained gravel roads. The route took us through a neighborhood of small beautiful farms on a road that runs parallel to a stream. The road continued on in a way that felt like trespassing as we rode between barns, over corn and soy fields, past a tractor shed and through fields cut for hay. Next we turned onto a painted highway with a posted speed of 45mph and rode along for about two miles. During our first day this was our only stretch of riding with paint on the road. We skirted around a mountain and had our first fun and short descent on a twisty paved road. We pulled into a neighborhood of old apple-packing warehouses and a convenience store with a deli, likely a good place to stop, according to Paul who ran inside. Bulk candy, camping goods, deli sandwiches and the rest. We surveyed a few bins full of local apples that were stationed out on the road. I found my local favorite, the Black Twig and we got four apples for $2. They were fantastically good. We enjoyed some more lovely country riding before starting on a long climb that took our elevation from 600 feet to 3,500 feet over 18 miles without interruption. The way up is via a wooded fire and maintenance road that is at times quite rocky but easily passible by bike… if your legs are up for it. You would need a serious 4x4 vehicle with clearance to make it up these roads and the few campers and people out fishing were in one-ton trucks. There are a few steep, rocky, loose descents on the way up, short reprieves from long and steady climbing. According to my GPS we climbed for three hours. We took one snack break early on and had a few quick stops but for the most part we were grinding away. Paul longed for a bag of potato chips, craving salt and tired of all the chewing required of his nutty trail mix. I don’t have many pictures from this section as I was very focussed on trying to make it to the cabin before dark. The early sunset and our vital camp chores were top of mind. Once we arrived we needed to gather firewood and water. Without electricity or plumbing we were reliant on the woodstove for heat and the spring for hydration. Stumbling around in steep and unfamiliar terrain searching for wood and water was something I hoped to avoid. As we were passing a gate with signs that announced bicycles were prohibited we encountered a traveller on a flat bar mountain bike with

2022-10-21 Thread Keith Paugh
I kept double tapping, trying to “like.”

I'm also enjoying this thread. One thing I've wondered about WRT Susie-Gus
vs. Clem: Is the reach / effective top tube shorter on Susie/Gus than Clem
of similar size? I have a 59 Clem L that is great but even with a very
short stem flat-ish bars are too far away.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Fork Paint Options!

2022-10-07 Thread Keith Paugh
Whew! Had to take a minute after seeing that existing brown bike color! Took my
breath away.

I vote for painting the fork to match, but if you need a change, that schwinn
red would stop traffic. 
