Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Droptube Rivendell Custom 54cm

2024-05-10 Thread Keith Weaver
I'll add some bicycle content by saying I think it's great if one is able
to change up what bikes you have, based on your current riding desires and
ability. I hope someone steps up and buys Joe's beautiful bike!

A bit more off-topic motorcycle content: I recently sold my V-Strom 650 as
I didn't find myself riding it anymore. The biggest excitement of the sale
was the additional space in my garage! I find I want to spend my free time
on my bicycle(s) more than on a moto. Also, all my moto friends sold
theirs, so it became a more solitary pursuit. I have been thinking about a
Yamaha XT 250, but that may remain a distant "want" for a while longer.

Cheers,
Keith

When you ride it, it's a custom.
To anyone else, it's a well-made used bicycle.

Save up for the motor bike, and watch for deals.
Unlike a motorcycle, your bicycle doesn't cost anything just

Bill,

I also have a brown Gran Premio! I especially like the Suntour symmetric
shifters. Univega was the brand sold in my childhood bike store, so when I
saw mine in a used bike shop, I had to have it. They'll always have a soft
spot in my heart. If I were to ride mine in the CA Eroica, I think I'd need
some lower gearing, maybe the Velo Orange 46-30 crankset.

I have the VO 50.4 bcd cranks on my Saluki and a 118mm bb was actually
too short. I had to use a 122.5 and even that was pretty tight.

I’ve had the same question, but about my latest gen Appaloosa. I don’t understand why the Appaloosa doesn’t include fork braze ons to work with standard low rider racks.I had been thinking the hub area rack was the only option, but just saw this at Blue Lug: https://global.bluelug.com/catalog/product/view/id/31396/s/nitto-s-rack/category/41/It’s only supposed to be for thru-fork joints, but they have a blog post showing it mounted on an Appaloosa.Has anyone managed to mount a Tubus low rider or similar?Cheers,KeithOn Jan 7, 2024, at 4:40 PM, Brian Turner wrote:Thanks for the input, Armand! I see your point, and it's a good one. I'd need to take a measure of the Gamoh adapters, but if the spacing was right, I should be able to distribute the forces across two other points of attachment besides the QR: In theory, I could run the fender stay bolts through the hole on the Gamoh that lines up with the rear-facing braze-on on my fork dropout (assuming it also lines up with the QR axle - but that would remain to be seen). So that would be one direct mount to the fork. The other direct mount would be the crossbar on my Tubus rack that mounts to the mid-fork stay. I would like to think that triangulation of forces would take a lot of the burden off the QR. My options would be wide-open if only my "touring" frame had all the appropriate mounting points to live up to its potential... but I digress. I really hate the look and the thought of pipe clamps - always have. Also, this bike will have fenders most of the time, so that complicates things a bit as well.I own a Tubus Nova that I love, and hoped would work with this bike, but sadly it just won't given this configuration. Re: [RBW] Re: Whoosa Getting an Appaloosa? 2023

2023-05-26 Thread Keith Weaver
I'm hoping to get one, have been planning the build for months now. I have
a pair of Velo Orange Crazy Bars that I bought for a 90s MTB conversion.
That MTB had such a short steer tube I couldn't make it work, but I kept
the bars. We'll see if they work for the Appaloosa. I do have a pair of
Albatross bars around as a backup. I bought a used pair of Vittoria Terreno
Dry tires (Thanks, Joe!) that are 47 mm wide as my starter pair. Not sure
what type of tire I'll end up with, but these look like a decent compromise
to start.

It's been a lot of fun acquiring old parts, I'm going with an XTR rear
derailleur, Dura-ace clamp-on front, XT parallel-push V-brakes. I had Rich
build up a pair of wheels with a SON dynamo, also my first dynamo bike.

I'm going for the Limeolive, can't quite get excited about the purple. I
really wanted mermaid, but oh well.

Cheers,
Keith

2023-01-19 Thread Keith Weaver
There's a small (48 cm), red(!) Hillborne in the Bay Area that I'm trying
to resist buying myself. I think it may be a bit small for me with my 79 cm
PBH, and not quite what I need to replace my Disc Trucker. I'm trying to
hold out until the next batch of Appaloosas.

Re: [RBW] Re: A report on my new leather saddle

2023-01-19 Thread Keith Weaver
I have found a couple of solutions to the lack of bag loops on modern
saddles. Velo Orange sells clamp on loops, but they didn't look very strong
to me. The Restuvus saddle attachment is nicely made and feels very secure.
I haven't used mine a lot, but I think it's a great option. One source I
found is here: https://builtbyswift.com/shop/hobo-pieces-restuvus/

[RBW] WTB small Atlantis or Appaloosa

2022-12-07 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi all,
I've been agonizing over trying to buy a Sam Hillborne today, and I think
I've decided it doesn't quite fit what I want. Really the only space in my
bike stable would be if I could replace my Surly Disc Trucker. I think I
shouldn't try to make the Hillborne fit into that slot, when it isn't
intended to be a fully loaded touring bike (feel free to tell me I'm
wrong...).

So, it seems that the Appaloosa or Atlantis is really what I need. Does
anyone have a small one they're looking to move along? I have a 78 cm PBH,
so the smallest size of the latest generation would be what I'm looking
for. I would also be interested in older generations as well, if available.
A frameset or a full build would both be of interest to me.

Good luck to all who are going for a Hillborne today!

[RBW] WTB wide(r) saddle

2021-11-10 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi,
I’ve set up an old Univega MTB with albatross bars and have found that the old
WTB Silverado saddle that I had around isn’t very comfortable for my upright
riding position.

I’m wondering if anyone has a wider saddle sitting around they’d like to sell?
I’m thinking about a cambium c19, or something with a similar shape.

Cheers,
Keith

This topic is definitely interesting to me. I have a circa 2017 26" Disc

to have a second bike that would fit fenders with Snoqualmie Pass tires.
When I moved up from Barlow Pass to Snoqualmie Pass on the SH, fenders

I was concerned about how the DT would ride with it's oversize tubing,
but I find it rides great. the SH has an oversize down tube of 31.8mm like
the DT and 2 top tubes of 28.6mm vs the single top tube of 31.8mm on the
DT, but I think the top tube on the DT is thinner gauge, justing by the
pitch of ring when tapping on it. Seat tube on both are 28.6mm.

Re: [RBW] Re: rides sought

2021-05-17 Thread Keith Weaver
I camped at Mckerricher state park a few weeks ago, near Fort Bragg, and
found a couple of good rides. One is along the coast, between Fort Bragg
and Mckerricher. This is a paved, very flat trail. The next ride is in the
Jackson State Demonstration Forest, near Mendocino. I started fairly high
up the slope, along the Forest History trails. This was very steep, I
wouldn't recommend it too highly, unless you want steep MTB action.

When I got to the lower portions of the trails, I had a lot of fun riding
along the Big River. It was relatively flat, smooth soil with some gravel.
I didn't go all the way along the trail, due to time, but it had to be a
couple of miles long at least. This would be from the intersection of Road
700 & Road 730. I think Trailforks calls this the Big River Haul Road, and
it looks like it goes all the way to Mendocino.

I found a site describing a new trail in this area with a bit of climbing,
it's the Observatory Trail. Below are a couple of links that may be helpful.

[RBW] Front pannier rack for Appaloosa

2021-03-01 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi all,
I may soon be buying a Joe Appaloosa, and I'm wondering about using it as a
loaded touring bike. It sounds like the bike should work well for that
purpose, but the fork's upper eyelets seem a bit problematic.

I have a Surly Disc Trucker with the Tubus Duo pannier rack, it's been a
great setup for me. It looks like the Appaloosa fork has only one set of
upper eyelets, which are too high for the Duo rack. The only simple,
elegant front pannier rack I've seen that would work with those upper
eyelets is the Nitto Mark's hub area rack (with hoop). That rack is sold
out, and I guess there was a recent batch in stock that sold out very fast.

I could mount the Tubus Tara rack or similar using clamp on eyelets, but
I'd like to avoid those clamps if at all possible. Does anyone have
recommendations on other rack options, or a hub area rack they would sell,
or comments that I shouldn't do this at all?

Cheers,
Keith

[RBW] WTB: Small Atlantis

2021-02-10 Thread Keith Weaver
Hello,
I thought I'd just throw this out and see if anyone has a small Atlantis
frame or complete bike that they're interested in selling. My PBH is 78.5
cm, so I'd be looking for a 47 cm current design, maybe a bit larger for an
older version (unless I don't understand the sizing of the older versions).

I have a Surly Disc Trucker, but the beauty of the Atlantis is calling to
me to replace the Surly and maybe have a touring bike I enjoy using more
when it doesn't have a full load on it.

I could also be interested in other similar Riv models that would be a good
replacement for the Trucker, if someone has something else that may fit the
bill. Say, an Appaloosa, or a Hillborne.

I'm up for shipping a bike to me in Reno, or I could drive a ways to pick
it up, if that influences the deal.

Thanks,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Electric bicycles (Was: Copenhagen wheel)

2021-01-14 Thread Keith Weaver
I have an XO-3 that I had a shop install a Bafang BBS02 system on several
years back. It uses a Revelate 1/2 frame bag to hold the battery just under
the top tube, while still allowing me to run a small water bottle in the
seat tube cage. The system has plenty of power for me, and has given me a
range of almost 40 miles, although I've only run out of battery once.

This is a "mid-drive" system that replaces the crankset and bottom bracket,
with the motor sitting just ahead of the bottom bracket. I'd recommend
doing a bit of research on mid-drives vs hub motors, the option that will
work best for you may depend on the kind terrain you intend to ride on.
I've read that hub motors aren't as well suited to long, steep hills as
mid-drives.

I went with a shop install because I wanted to have someone to repair it if
needed, but if doing it again, I'd probably do it myself and save a lot of
money. Bafang kits are available for much less than I paid, most with a
battery that mounts to the down tube cage mounts. I might recommend the
BBSHD, as it is a bit more robust than my BBS02, and doesn't have the
problem with the driveshaft bearing that I ended up repairing myself.

I will say that my kit is not as "natural" feeling as other ebikes I've
tried, because it only has a cadence sensor, no torque sensor. This can
result in the motor engaging in a bit of a jerky manner at times.
Nonetheless, for retro-fitting an existing bike, I think a mid-drive is a
great way to go. Another benefit of my kit is that it includes a throttle.
I don't use it often, but it's great to be able to get a burst of speed
when trying to get into a left turn lane on a higher-speed street.

[RBW] WTB: Brooks Cambium C17 (Preferably brown)

2020-11-24 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi,

I'm interested in trying out a cambium saddle, and thought I'd see if
anyone on the list has one they're not using and would be willing to part
with. I like brown saddles, but any color would be OK. I'm assuming the C17
size would be best for me, based on how much I like my B17.

Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: 50cm MIT Atlantis with 26” wheels?

2020-04-14 Thread Keith Weaver
I'll chime in and say that I rode a 50 cm Atlantis at Riv last spring, but
I'm not sure what the wheel size was. My PBH is 78-79 cm, Will said he
would recommend the 47 cm for me, but they didn't have one built up to
ride.

The 50 cm felt great to me, I'm sorely tempted by that CL listing. My issue
is that I already own a Surly Disc Trucker, that has a large amount of
overlap with the Atlantis. I'm sure I'd like the Riv better, but am having
a hard time justifying the new purchase.

Re: [RBW] Cycling Glasses

2020-03-26 Thread Keith Weaver
I just went through this, and settled on some that I've been happy with.
They are the Tifosi Tyrant 2.0. I got them with the brown polarized fototec
lenses. That is a photochromic lens, they do lighten and darken based on on
surrounding brightness. I can't say I've noticed the light transmission
varying a lot, but they have been about right for cloudy and dusky
conditions, as well as sunny days. There are a lot of other lens options
for these, and they are interchangeable, so you can switch them up if
desired. I also wanted some shades that would be somewhat stylish in off
the bike settings, these are acceptable for me, if not the most
good-looking casual shades.
Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: Crash Stories

2020-03-16 Thread Keith Weaver
Mountain biking has of course resulted in more crashes than I could count,
luckily none with anything more lasting some minor scarring. One memorable
one was on Maui, riding in the Poli-Poli area on the slopes of Haleakala. I
fell off the downslope side of the trail and landed in the dense tropical
vegetation, suspended about 5 feet above the actual ground. My friends said
it was striking to watch, I just disappeared into the vegetation. I was
unharmed, but it was quite a struggle to get back up to the trail without
being able to reach the ground!

One that was a bit more of a teachable moment for me happened when I was
16. I was riding down the only hill in my town, on the sidewalk on the left
side of the street, building speed for a jump that was on the next block.
It was a ridge in the pavement where two driveways were right next to
each other. Not much of a jump, but it was fun for me. A car pulled out
across the crosswalk I had been planning on riding through at top speed,
and I hit the right front fender. I did a full front flip, with my hands
still on the bars and my bike above me, over the hood of the car. I swear I
remember looking in the windshield of the car, at the family of four, their
mouths open in horror. I landed approximately on my back, with my feet
hitting first, then my butt, then my back. Generally unharmed, I don't
think I even got scratched up (no helmet of course, this was 1986). The
fork of my bike collapsed, and the front wheel was toast, but otherwise it
was OK. The driver was very apologetic, and loaded my bike in his car and
drove me home. My takeaway from this: only ride on the sidewalk if you
must, and be careful at intersections!

Cheers,
Keith

I have to say, I love this bike. I had a Univega touring bike in the same

racy road models. I keep an eye out for them on Craigslist, but don't know
if I could justify more space taken up in the garage by another bike.
Luckily for me, 61 is about 8-10 cm too big for me, so I can let this one
pass me by.

2019-12-13 Thread Keith Weaver
Kent,

That's a great story! I hadn't realized you were posting on your blog
again, It was a great treat to get to read some of your other new posts.
I'd guess most folks on this list are familiar with your blog, but if not,
I'd highlight recommend all of it.

Leah, I don't have any Christmas bike stories this year, but I can
definitely relate to your tale of the joy and anticipation that new Huffy
brought to you!

Happy holidays to all,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: New 2019 frame geometry charts up on RBW's website

2019-11-19 Thread Keith Weaver
I'm right between 78 and 79. If I bought a new Riv, it would probably be an
Atlantis. I test rode a 50 cm this summer, it felt great. They said they'd
actually recommend a 47, for standover clearance, but the 50 felt
comfortable for me.

If anyone has an Atlantis frame in one of those sizes, or a corresponding
earlier version, I could be tempted...

But, I am still confused why I can't find PBH on that table. I have to be
missing something, right?

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for a replacement for the old MUSA short sleeved merino wool jersey

2019-07-17 Thread Keith Weaver
I've been wearing the Minus33 merino 1/4 zip short sleeve shirts for
several years. Good durability, one of mine has a few holes, but I think
those are due to moths. My newer one was purchased almost two years ago and
has no holes. I wash them in the machine with Kookaburra wool wash and hang
dry. They're actually a little loose cut. No pockets unfortunately, but
quite good otherwise.I get mine at amazon, see here:
Minus33-Merino-Wool-Tarleton
.
These are the closest I have found to a merino bike jersey in a cut that is
compatible for my heavier, shorter build (5'6", 200 lbs, size 46 chest). I
wear an XL in these.

Re: [RBW] Suggestions for best cycling shades?

2019-06-05 Thread Keith Weaver
I wear Native Nanos, and bought a pair of the Nano2 (squared) a little
later. It seems like these have been discontinued, but Native has similar
frames available now. Many of their models include their sportflex (light
orange) lens as well as a dark lens. Lots of their frame styles provide
good wind protection, and the lens interchangeability can be handy.

REI carries them, you may be able to find the brand elsewhere as well.

Re: [RBW] Appropriate Areas to Ride in Reno

2019-05-06 Thread Keith Weaver
I'm in Reno and can give a few recommendations. The classic road ride is
the Reno to Verdi loop. Start in NW Reno, head to the west to Verdi
(pronounced verd-eye) and come back the same way. You can make it a fairly
flat ride along the river, or detour up into the Somersett development on
the north side of the route to add some climbing. About 25 miles round
trip, generally quiet traffic, pretty good views of the surrounding
scenery. Here's a map link from a local cycling club:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14682543. You don't have to go out to the
spur shown with points 14, 18, and 16, but I like that stretch.

We do have a path along the Truckee River, it's about 12-13 miles round
trip from downtown Reno out to the east end of the valley and back. It's a
bit bumpy with tree roots assaulting the asphalt, and it can be a bit
sketchy with the fairly high homeless population. I rode it on Saturday, it
was fine, but not the best representation of our community.

Another fun ride is out around Washoe Valley. You can start at Bowers
Mansion, and ride either direction around the edge of the valley. I like to
go south (counterclockwise) and out along Franktown Road. The eastern side
of the valley (Eastlake Blvd) is a little less inviting, but still not bad.
This route is best to ride earlier in the day, as winds can get very strong
down here.

We have a new separated pedestrian path along Veteran's Parkway, from the
Truckee River south to South Meadows Parkway. It's about 5 miles one way,
quite flat, and gives you a nice view of the east side of the valley.

Feel free to ping me privately for more details

Cheers,
Keith

That sounds great! Living in Reno, the Tioga Road from Lee Vining is my

They usually do a bikes-only weekend on that road as well, your message

Re: [RBW] Quick cockpit swap (say that 10x fast)

2019-04-10 Thread Keith Weaver
I have an S coupled bike, I'd recommend using those kind of splitters.
This is assuming your frame has split cable stops to let you pull the cable
attached to the bars out easily.

Here's a link to a site that carries them:
http://www.davincitandems.com/components/. Take a look down toward the
bottom. You'll have to get two brake kits, as an S bike normally only has
one brake cable split.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bar tape color recommendation

2019-04-09 Thread Keith Weaver
I'm not fully committed to the Sella, it's sagging and will likely need to
be re-covered fairly soon. I do have a honey Brooks on another bike that I
don't ride a lot, I've been toying with putting that saddle on the Riv. I
have also been considering going to a more standard, lighter black saddle.
I've really enjoyed the WTB Silverado on my other road bike, and may get
another to go on this bike.

I'm not committed to cloth tape with shellac, but I'd like to try it for a
while. On other bikes I've used the Lizard Skins tape, and leather bar tape.

Thanks for letting me know, but I already found one yesterday that should be

[RBW] WTB: Small Saddlesack, Brooks cambium

2019-04-01 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi all,
I'm thinking I'd like to try a saddlesack for my 54 cm Riv Road. Of course,
it looks like the now discontinued small size would be the one for me. I
have about 9.5" between my saddle loops and the rear tire, so the new
BagBoy won't really work for me. Let me know if you have a Small size
saddlesack for sale.

The bike is currently running an older Sella Anatomica saddle that is at
the end of the adjuster bolt and still feels kind of saggy. I think I may
eventually get it re-covered, but in the meantime, I've been interested in
a Cambium saddle for quite a while. Does anyone have a Cambium sitting
around that they would part with?

On a related note, these parts are for the Road frame that I previously
posted about regarding my Albatross bars situation. It wasn't very
comfortable with those bars, likely due to the cramped cockpit and
relatively harsh ride of the Ruffy Tuffy tires when sitting up so straight.
This weekend I mounted a set of 46 cm Noodles that I bought from a list
member as a complete cockpit, with Tallux stem, Tektro brake levers,
Suntour bar-ends and multi-color bar tape. I rode it both days this
weekend, and I think I like this bike a lot more as a drop-bar bike. I'm
considering going for the Compass Chinook Pass EL tires once I wear out the
Tuffys, or just get tired of them. Now I just need to figure out what frame
I should get to put my Albatross cockpit on!

Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Enable my bicycle buying issues!

2019-03-19 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi Greg,
I haven't noticed if the BB is chamfered. I bought the frame off craigslist
from someone in the East Bay area about 4-5 years ago, so it's possible
that it is your frame.

It's good to get this input from the group, both on the suitability of this
frame for Alba bars (at least for me), and on whether it really should stay
with the beausage it has right now.

I think I've just gotten in the habit of acquiring a new bike every 12-18
months for the last 3-4 years. I just need to realize that this habit
requires that some bikes actually leave the garage eventually.

Re: [RBW] Enable my bicycle buying issues!

2019-03-18 Thread Keith Weaver
Thanks Joe! You're right, the paint is pretty good, although there are some
decent-sized patches where it's gone that you can't see in that photo. I
made a rough attempt at color-matching, then gave up on that and covered
them with clear, just to keep rust out. A re-paint would really only be to
get the cream accents in place that to me are some of the highlights of the
Riv look.

Re: [RBW] Enable my bicycle buying issues!

2019-03-15 Thread Keith Weaver
I think the Riv Road should be about right for me as a road bike. It's a 54
cm frame, I don't have exact top tube and seat tube lengths right now. My
PBH is ~79 cm, I have had a 54 cm Romulus and a 54 cm Rambouillet in the
past, and they felt about right. I have it set up quite upright right now,
but it doesn't feel cramped. I haven't tried it with drop bars, I think it
should work well.

I'm going to NAHBS tomorrow, hope to be able to talk to the RIV staff there
about what would work for me and what would be the right size.

[RBW] Enable my bicycle buying issues!

2019-03-15 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi all,
I've been feeling an itch for a new bicycle, or at least a frame to tinker
with, but I'm kind of stuck. A bit about the current stable: A Lynskey S
coupled Ti all-rounder, that will clear tires up to 42 mm. It has a carbon
disc brake fork, and cantilever rear brakes. This was intended as my
do-it-all, lifetime bike, but I neglected to account for my enjoyment of
bike buying and tinkering. A Surly Disc Trucker, for long, self-supported
tours. A full-suspension, 27.5 Scott mtb. A Bridgestone XO-3 with a Bafang
mid-drive motor kit retrofitted. Last, but not least, a circa ~1995 54 cm
Rivendell Road Standard that I bought as a frame and built up with
light-ish components and Albatross bars.

The Rivendell has never been that comfortable with the Albatross bars,
likely due to the Ruffy Tuffy tires. I think I haven't really enjoyed the
benefit of the Albatross bars, and they may work better for me on a bike
with bigger tires than the Road Standard can take. The other downside of it
is that the paint is kind of rough, and there are no cream accents. I've
been on the fence about where I go next. I could repaint the Road Standard,
and get the cream accents added. I could buy a used Rivendell bike/frame,
likely a Rambouillet. Or, I could buy a new Rivendell frame, likely an A.
Homer Hilsen. I'm a little concerned that the new Rivendells may be
heavier-built than I really need or want, given that I already have the
Disc Trucker. The Roadini may be a little more what O would want, but I'd
really like any new Riv I get to be fully lugged.

Short version: Should I re-paint my classic Road Standard frame, buy a used
Rambouillet frame, or buy a new A. Homer Hilsen frame?

Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-18 Thread Keith Weaver
I have to admit that I'm also an e-bike owner. I put a Bafang mid-drive
conversion kit on my XO-3. It's a lot of fun, and lets me do my 12-mile
(one-way) commute on days when high temps or high winds would otherwise
discourage me from riding.

If you have a frame/bike you already like, one of these kits can be a great
option. I'd recommend researching mid-drives vs hub motors, as each has
their pros and cons. I have noticed that the majority of new e-bikes I see
use mid-drives. A purpose-built e-bike will have the benefits of cleaner
cabling and may be more secure in terms of reducing the chances of the
battery being stolen. But, you will pay a fair bit extra to get the good
quality component level you already have on his Rivendell.

Cheers,
Keith

That's a great write-up, I definitely would be interested in getting a
detailed route from you. I'm in Reno, and have been wondering how to get
some more touring in locally, preferably with less traffic.

I have a Surly Disc Trucker with panniers front (lowrider) and rear. I
currently have Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 26x1.6 tires (non-tubeless). I
don't know if the stock rims will work tubeless, I haven't tried or
researched the issue. Do you think that setup would work for the route you
did?

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 56cm Blue Rambouillet "complete"

2018-11-18 Thread Keith Weaver
I'm thinking this would be a perfect fit for me, assuming it actually is a 52
cm frame. I'm 5'6", with a 79 cm PBH. I'm a little torn about getting a 26"
bike, but I get why Riv uses smaller wheels for smaller frames.

I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase, because there's a lot of
overlap between the Ram and my current bikes. I have an older Riv road
standard, to cover the lugged steel Rivendell place in the stable. The problem
with that bike is that I can't run tires larger than 28 mm. I got some great
input on using supple tires with that bike, haven't tried that yet. I really
want that spot to be filed with an Albatross barred bike, I don't know if the
road standard will ever be great with those bars. One other issue with that
bike is that it doesn't have any cream details, it's solid light blue. A great
color, but I like the cream fills on the Ram. Then, I have an S coupled
Lynskey Ti all-rounder, that can take up to 42 mm tires. The 3rd road bike in
the garage is a 52 cm, 26" wheeled Surly Disc Trucker, that I only use for
fully loaded touring.

So, I guess I'm looking for input on whether I'd love this bike so much that I
should give it a spot in my stable? It does feel like a good deal, given the
stated condition. I'd have to drive a couple of hours to get it, but I think it
would be worth the trip.

Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] FS - Mustard yellow Clem Smith Jr - 52 H

2018-11-17 Thread Keith Weaver
I saw this listing a while back and while it's not quite the right bike for
me, I just had to say hey to a fellow Ellensburger! I don't live there any
more, but my parents do. I'll be visiting next week for Turkey Day, I love
coming back to the Kittitas Valley. Best of luck in your sale, it's a
beautiful bike.

Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 56cm Blue Rambouillet "complete"

2018-11-17 Thread Keith Weaver
The craigslist post says the frame size is 54 cm. Is that not correct? I
have a 79 cm PBH, I would assume the 52 cm size would be better for me than
a 54 cm. I don't need another bike, but I have been looking at this one,
it's pretty sweet.

[RBW] FS: 50cm A Homer Hilsen

2018-11-09 Thread Keith Weaver
Sighted, a red 50 cm A. Homer Hilsen, for sale in the east Bay Area.
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/d/rivendell-l2010-homer-hilson/6742038832.html
.

I'm definitely liking this, but having a hard time justifying yet another
bike. I especially like the Phil Wood hubs and Chris King headset. I have a
79 cm PBH, so it looks like this would be just about right for me. $1800
seems a bit steep, I'd probably prefer to build one up from a frame.

If anyone has a Rambouillet, Romulus, or A. Homer Hilsen frameset in my
size, it's possible I could be tempted into an impulse purchase...

Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] 650B conversion for my Road Standard?

2018-10-31 Thread Keith Weaver
The Compass ELs do sound like a good option, and I really don't want to
have to give up these brakes and buy new wheels. How much Orange Seal would
be recommended? I'm guessing around one ounce per tube?

Thanks for the generous offers to test some 650B wheels, unfortunately it's
a long haul from Reno, I don't think that's going to work for me.

I do have a Velo Orange sprung saddle on another bike (Bridgestone XO-3), I
could test whether I feel any benefit using that saddle. I will say I
haven't felt it doing much on my XO-3 to soak up the bumps, maybe I just
can't tell.

Regarding the bar height, I think that photo makes it look a little more
extreme than it actually is, but I'll try dropping them a bit to test the
impact.

[RBW] 650B conversion for my Road Standard?

2018-10-30 Thread Keith Weaver
I found a Riv Road Standard frame on the SF Bay Area Craigslist 3 or 4 years
ago, and found myself compelled to pick it up. I had seen on the Riv website
Grant describing the Albatross bar, and saying if you don't have a bike with
these bars, you need one. I didn't really need another road bike, so I decided
to build this up as my Albatross bar bike

I built the bike fairly light, Albatross bars with cork grips and Silver bar
end shifters, Velo Orange Grand Cru brakes, VO 50.4 BCD cranks, Velocity
Synergy O/C wheels from Peter White, 28 mm Ruffy Tuffy tires, Campy Record
front derailleur, Deore XT rear, wide range 10 speed cassette, Nitto stem and
seatpost, Riv gripster pedals, Sella Anatomica saddle. I love the way this bike
looks, sorry I don't have an easy way to link to a pic right now

My problem is that the narrow (for a Riv) tires are transmitting a lot of road
shock to me, especially because I'm sitting upright with these bars. It feels
nicely light and responsive, just a bit rough. I tried to put Jack Brown 33.3
mm tires on and found they didn't fit at all in the rear, it immediately rubbed
on the chain stays. I didn't even try the front, although the clearance looks a
little better. I don't know if a 30 mm tire would feel much different than the
ruffy tuffys.

I'm hesitant to move to 650B, mostly because I like these parts, especially the
new wheels and the VO brakes. I'm guessing the brakes wouldn't work for 650B,
as they're listed as 47-57 mm reach. I have the pads at the top of the slot now
with the 700c rims, but it sounds like the reach would change by more than 10
mm when going to 650B.

Can anyone give me some input on whether I'll love this bike with 650B and the
Albatross bars, or should I just put drops on it and look for another frame to
be my upright bike?

Thanks in advance,
Keith
