[RBW] Re: Let's see your Rivendell headbadges

2023-12-18 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Nice! I wish I had the badges I used for the poster, but alas they were all
loaners (Grant sent me a bunch for the original poster), or photos I found
online. The only badge I have at this point is the one on my Clem. Tell me
more about the 5th one from the left. Looks like it could be the original
pewter, or maybe a pre-cloisonne. Some of yours also look flat - clue us
in.

Cheers,

Marty

[RBW] Re: Headbadge Poster Update and Outtake

2023-12-08 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
FYI - I've had good luck at Walgreens for printing the badge posters, but
have also done them at OfficeMax. The hi res file is sized at 18" x 24"
(5400 x 7200 @300dpi). Plenty of frames that size to choose from .

Climbing past 2,300 views now - a new record for these updates! Glad you
all like it. Beginning to think about something new. Open to ideas from the
bunch as to what kind of Riv-related poster (or calendar?) you might like
to see. I've done one of the bike models before, but it was difficult to
find good hi-res photos of all the bikes. No promise that I'll do something
in the near future, but when the mood strikes I want to have some ideas in
mind that this group would appreciate.

Re: [RBW] Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-12 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I may have shared this years ago, but when the idea of a diagatube Hunq was
floated out there, I took the liberty of photoshopping the concept based on
the double top tube model. That led to a conversation with Grant and a
whole bunch of quick iterations for different paint and graphic details.
Here is the complete series. You may notice I eventually used the tire
graphics to keep track of which was which - I think it ended at #22. I am a
rank amateur when it comes to photoshop, but it was close enough at the
time. Crazy to look back now and imagine how different it could have been.
Have fun browsing the pics! See if you can spot the nifty details like an
extra seat tube badge on a couple of them. (I still like that idea.)

[RBW] Nivex on a Rivendell?

2022-12-12 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
The Nivex is on the market now, and I really like the look of it. Even at
$729.00 it feels like money well spent if you want something a little
different and appreciate all that goes into making something like this.
KUDOs to Jan for sticking with it.
Nivex Rear

For a custom Rivendell, it might make for a very sweet build. If my ship
comes in I'd be tempted to spring for one, but I'll hold out until I see
the new Riv rear derailer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Annual Head-Badge Poster Update

2022-11-30 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Badges have been done by different artists over the years, I have no idea
if there is any way to ID who did what - Grant would know. I've had good
luck printing at Walgreens in the past. Bring the file on a thumb drive or
set it up on line. The Hi Res full size print is large - it's 300dpi - so
plan accordingly.

Heron was a bit of an outlier - yes a different company but a big dose of
the DNA of Rivendell at the time was baked in. Later on, SOMA also built
bikes that were advised/designed by Grant, but not quite the same thing.
Early in the poster series Grant mentioned Heron belonged, but SOMA not so
much.

[RBW] Annual Head-Badge Poster Update

2022-11-30 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Had some time to update the poster, and made a number of changes to keep
things interesting. Hope you all like it.

   1. Highlighted the very first Rivendell badge (cast pewter) front and
   center and larger than life.
   2. Swapped in a new version of the Riv badge in purple at the top left -
I had not seen this one before. I like it!
   3. Brought back the Heron badge. I LOVE it!
   4. Swapped in a different version of the Roadeo badge - this time in
   blue.
   5. Added the latest badge: the "Roaduno" even though it's not being sold
   yet.
   6. Enlarged the entire poster to 18X24 to accommodate all the badges.
Frames are standard for this size print.

I keep thinking this will be the last update, but if RIvendell continues
to add new models I'm duty bound to plug ahead.

As always, here's the link to the hi-res file on Flickr. Download and print
to your heart's content! Enjoy the holiday season and every ride throughout
the year!

[RBW] Clemuno

2022-08-19 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Today's Riv email mentioned the Roaduno is kind of like a Clem H singler.
Pretty close! In this overlay you can see my ghosted Clem behind the
Roaduno.

[RBW] Hecho Where?

2022-06-01 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I've always liked the Made in USA labels on Sackville products, and support
many companies who try to support US-based businesses. Not easy these days.
I'm not anti-non-US made stuff, but I try to be aware.

A recent purchase of a Kangaroo pouch came to me with a variation on the
label - now it says "Hecho in Connecticut". (Shouldn't it be Hecho *en*
Connecticut?) I get narrowing things down the the state where it is made,
but why the Hecho part? When did that start? Not a deal breaker, but I
prefer the simplicity of "Made in USA".

Not sure it has anything to do with anything Riv related, but if it fires

[RBW] Re: NBOD: New Bike Ordered Day! The mythical canti-Roa!

2022-04-05 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I like the idea Bill, and wholeheartedly APPROVE! Are you thinking cantis,
or v-brakes? Timing-wise the new Riv Vs might coincide with frame delivery.
I'm guessing drop bars? Back in my distant past (and before Riv) I had
canti bosses added to a Paramount I had custom built. That was a sweet bike
(and one I never photographed...) so I get the attraction. Color-wise I
lean in the direction of silver metallic (not grey) and have always liked
the idea of a red head tube. I grabbed this pic years ago (someone here?)
and it's still an inspiration. maybe add some red cable housing.

Looking forward to following along.

B67 - Check. The flip/flop hub will accept a splined cog for fixed, I just

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem H - Holy Hell

2022-03-02 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I did the same to my dedicated one-speeder - a Proteus - with Campagnolo
dropouts, and it's been going strong for over 30 years that way. I could
always go back to gears using a bolt-on hanger, but that's not going to
happen. The Clem may shift again down the road so I kept the option alive,
and the hanger threads clean, by using the bolt. I often plug unused
rack/fender eyelets with shorty bolts too, but I try to use the little
dome-shaped ones if I can find enough of 'em.

This group seems to work that way. Not sure if it can be done at the thread
level, or needs an entirely new group to set it up to see last post first.

Yeah, maybe too good a deal. It was sold before I could make the call.
Someone here snag it? I had a 64 QB a while back, but it always felt just a
little too tall for me. Fun bike though.

That was fun to watch - thanks for taking the time to make it. Gotta love
the cup & cone BB! You put grease in all kinds of places I've never thought
to put grease. A little woodworking thrown in is right up my alley. The
build turned out great. Would love to have seen it ride off into the sunset

[RBW] The BOB Gazette - The Complete Archive

2021-12-29 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Thanks to several members of this Bunch and the iBOB group, we now have a
complete record of every BOB Gazette (and companion BOB Cat) published in
1993 and 1994 - eight issues in all.

The story these tell - the ups and downs, the people who made it work, the
optimism and the defeat - paint a picture that stands the test of time. Of
course we all know where it led, but for now let's enjoy the journey Grant
(BOB #99) and others took us all on when life was simple. I highly
recommend reading them in order. Special thanks to BOB #717 for making this
record available, and Reed for hosting. I may have had a BOB # myself, but
it's long gone. Thankfully, the memories remain, and the archive below will
keep them fresh. Enjoy!

2021-10-11 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Need to see that Puegeot! My knees are also letting me know that I'm over
65 now, so I tend to err on the low side gear-wise. (And I lived in central
Illinois for a while so I know the prairie headwinds) The trail I ride
inclines slightly (2%?) for 20 miles in both directions toward it's summit
near where I get on. Amazing how it looks dead flat but if I ride too far
in either direction I pay for it on the way back. I used to live near the
beginning and it was uphill until the turnaround, then a nice easy
"downhill" ride back to the start.

2021-07-08 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Not to suggest your definition of "complete" is not accurate Eric, but the
first few BoB Gazette issues (three I think?) are wonderful too, and led
directly to the Reader format when Rivendell was formed. I had them for a
while, and scanned them for the bunch a while back. Long gone I'm afraid.
Not sure where you would find a printed version now, but you never know.
The '92 - '94 Bridgestone catalogs Grant did are also great, and very much
a part of Rivendell history IMHO. You may already have them. Good luck

Re: [RBW] 1x Long Chain Stay Need 2 chains?

2021-06-02 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
My Clem H is running a 36 up front with a 12/34 out back. Needed extra
links to work. I too thought I could do it but one chain was not quite
enough. My stays may be longer than yours though. I also had to swap in a
longer tray on my fork mount roof rack. Good thing I had a spare from an
upright mount. Worked out well. Transporting these long bikes can be a
challenge.

[RBW] Downsizing a Clem

2021-04-28 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
This popped up out of nowhere and I thought it was worth a read. I don't
think I had seen it here, so apologies if it has been posted before. My own
59 Clem H is nearly complete - will do a dial in ride tomorrow. Pics to
follow next week as I'll be out of town for a few days.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Mouseproof handlebar bag

2021-04-13 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Irish Spring soap (shaved or grated) seems to deter mice. I had a nest in
my AC unit beside the house, and one in my snowblower. (And we have cats!)
A pile of soap shavings took care of them. They recommend the same for pop
up campers that have lots of fabric to chew on. Maybe a cheescloth bag of
soap shavings in the bag would work?

[RBW] In Praise of Park Tools

2021-03-21 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I have one of those workstand seat tube holder things, but the top knob
broke a while back. It's not something Park has sold for many years, and I
probably could have come up with a fix, but I took a chance and called to
see if they had a knob for it. Talked to a real person who pointed me to
the secret place on the site to find obsolete repair parts, and I was able
to order a NOS Park-branded knob and the plastic sleeve thing for a few
bucks. The guy kind of laughed and admitted they had not sold this thing
for at least fifteen years, but was happy to put this one back in service.
It showed up in the mail two days later. Shipping cost was less than 4
bucks.

Love it when a company is willing to take care of you and be pleasant about
it. The guy on the phone called me by name at least three times. Kudos to
Park Tools. May they live long and prosper.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best hat for sun protection while walking? -- Not too off-topic

2020-12-15 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I have a Tilley, but much prefer my OR Seattle Sombrero - lightweight,
GoreTex and wide brim that can be Aussiefied on one side or both as needed.
Great in the rain and snow, which is a good thing given the forecast for
Thursday here in PA.

https://www.sunnysports.com/p-orssslrbk/outdoor-research-seattle-sombrero-rain-hat-large-black?gclid=Cj0KCQiA2uH-BRCCARIsAEeef3mXE2Ypr3-JO_lmiizBjpxrcG3w2Qfdhz8ZLx3WuRhT513sst4deLwaAvK-EALw_wcB=aw.ds

The XL fits me better than any hat I've ever owned. I have a black one, but
am tempted to get one in a lighter color for summer.

Re: [RBW] The “Is It Normal Or Is It Broken” New Bike Game!

2020-12-06 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Maybe you have checked, but one thing I've experienced more than once is
the sound those little "tire feelers" make inside a fender. You know, the
little stringy things you get on new tires - leftover from the
manufacturing process? They stick up and stick out and rub on things even
though the tires have plenty of room. You can trim them off easily. Fenders
also seem to amplify sounds. I suspect if you ran without fenders some of
the sounds would disappear. I love a silent bike s much as anyone, but
every bike has a voice of it's own . When it makes little sounds, it's just
singing along for the ride. In your case, it's the sweet song o' the
Platypus.

[RBW] The Sound of Silence - Just Ride Quietly

2020-06-09 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Might be a first for this topic. I was out on my All Rounder this weekend,
a local rail trail that has sections of pavement here and there. My current
set up is one speed, using a Paul Melvin matched up to an eight speed
cogset on an XT cassette hub out back - one of the middle cogs, (not sure
which) and a single TA zephyr ring up front - a 36 I think. Anyway, one of
the best things about biking for me, and a goal of mine in general, is to
ride as quietly as possible. Similar to sculling on flat water, which I
have done my share of, the feeling of self propulsion in total silence
intrigues and pleases me.

On gravel, the Rivendell makes very little sound while pedaling or not,
just a light crackle/hiss from the tires. (700c Big Ben's in this case) But
on pavement, damn if all sound doesn't evaporate entirely! I love that!
Granted, at 64 - and having played drums for many years in my youth - my
hearing is diminished somewhat to begin with. Regardless, my mission to
ride silently appears to be achieved. Having said that, there may be room
to improve. I suppose a fixed gear hub would eliminate any chance of pawl
noise, and smooth tires may take it down a notch too. I have a White ENO
flipflop hub laced to a rim that would work, so that may be my next
experiment.

Any other ideas for silent running are welcome.

For *you* Joe. Maybe not for someone else. This is close to something I
would ride. Personally, I don't live in a 650b world. If someone was
looking for a cool custom 26"-wheeled Rivendell-badged bike like this,
where are they going to find one? Like the recent custom Riv sold that was
not just right for Vaughn, seems to me there is a lot of seller-bashing
going on here lately. If something pops up FS here that you are not
interested in, why comment at all? If you are interested, reach out to the
seller and make an offer for what you think it's worth. Still too much?
Walk away.

I thought posting that ad here would help someone find their perfect ride
as a fair price. Didn't intend to start a thing. For the sake of sellers
out there, I won't do that again. Let the cricket's chirping send a message
that the price may be out of line. Other non-bike groups I frequent
discourage if not ban the whole topic of what things are "worth" for good
reason. I'm all for that.

What are you paying for your $1500 custom Joe?

I think the asking price is very fair. Seems like a good way to *save*
$1500 on a classic Rivendell to me. The BG cantis alone ran $300+, not to
mention the rest of the build. Lower the saddle and bars (looks a little
goofy that high) and take some nicer photos and I think it would sell.

[RBW] 3-speed cassette?

2020-03-10 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Thinking of taking 5 cogs out of an 8 speed cassette and using a pair of
the gear-clamps Riv sells to end up with a 3-speed. Something like 16-18-20
or close to that. The idea is that for rail-trail riding I want minimal
clutter, but would still use a rear derailer and single shift level. Using
the gear clamps would help optimize chainline. Anyone try anything like
that before?

the headbadge and blue sky. Has me thinking about a repaint on my
Goodrich-built AR. Good luck with the sale.
