My 51 cm 650b w the Tektro side-pulls runs the 41-ish Fatty Rumpkins right
now.

I am curious if the Paul Racers would allow me to go bigger as well.

[RBW] WTB: Blue Paul Racers and a Large Silver or Gray Trunk Sack

2024-02-11 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Riv Riders!

Like so many specialized parts these days, I find myself in need of a
couple that are supposedly still made, but that I can’t find through the
normal channels.

1. My 2017-Era Orange Caliper-Sam is trimmed out in blue whenever I can.
Since I need a brake upgrade, I thought I would go big and go for the Blue
Paul Racers. The home-office is out of them right now. Anybody out there
got a pair for sale?

2. Still looking for a Large Gray or Silver Trunk Sack for my Miyata 1000.

LET ME KNOW!!
-Nathan Mattia

Re: [RBW] Hi & Questions...

2020-12-26 Thread Nathan Mattia
Yeah, but Grant would tell you something like “ a skilled rider on a Sam could
handle the trails“ you showed. The frames are stout enough, and the Joe
definitely is.
It’s all about big enough tires and enough stopping power and you can do that
with the Joe.

It’s “touring” like how the 1983 Specialized Expedition is basically a mountain
bike frame (just some different geometry specs) , but was built with smaller
tire clearances so I can’t take it off road. The difference is, with the Joe,
the clearances are such that you can. They’re just not super-huge like with the

It’s only “road touring” as they try to define differences between that and
their “hillibikes”.

Ok, with those trails the Joe might do you better than the Sam.

The Rene Herse crankset was on my list of most wanted parts for many

It gave me a bunch of grief. It came loose several times. It wasn’t the
1st time I mounted a taper spindle crank set. I’ve done hundreds of times.
The only time one came loose for me, was the very first time I did it. I
couldn’t believe this one. I ended up using a breaker bar to tighten it
 down.
This was the end of my desire to send Jan Hein any more money. He has

2020-12-20 Thread Nathan Mattia
Greetings, Phillip!
Your lone picture turns me green with envy. I s want to visit my
Mother Land on my Mother’s side, and hopefully ride there too.

I would have to agree with Ed and say that a Sam Hillborne is just the
thing. I have a 51cm with 650b Fatty Rumpkin tires and it’s a fantastic
ride.
Here’s a build post about my Samwise Hillborne from my blog

If you want footage of someone taking a Sam on rougher terrain, check out

And this one’s even about what bars make more sense on the Sam:

Cheers, and I sincerely hope to see you on the trails one day!

[RBW] Re: Comparing Rivendell Bikes to the old Bridgestones: Has anyone here experienced both a Rambouillet and an RB-T?

2020-12-02 Thread Nathan Mattia
Matt--That's an interesting theory about the smaller frames not flexing as
much. It's kind of what I figured. I took the RB-T out this morning for
20 minutes and man, it just cycles up to speed so quickly for me compared
to my 650b Sam with Fatty Rumpkins.

Bruce--Good to hear from someone who has ridden both!! I had always
assumed the Ram was a level TT but looking at the pics with that in mind, I
see it now, though it is not nearly as pronounced as my generation of
Hillborne.

I also hadn't taken into account the rear spacing differences and what that
means for tire choices.

Re: [RBW] Comparing Rivendell Bikes to the old Bridgestones: Has anyone here experienced both a Rambouillet and an RB-T?

2020-11-30 Thread Nathan Mattia
I had a 1992 50cm RB-T that was too small for me, no matter what I did to
it. It was my first Bridgestone. It felt neither lively, nor spritely.

But for some reason, this 56cm RB-T (same year) most definitely feels
supple. I haven't ridden enough to know if it's planing or not, but my
guess would be no. It's just a lot faster than my Hillborne and my
Expedition. Both were 700c wheels with stock parts. It may be
counter-intuitive, but I think the larger frame helps with the feel.

It's just interesting to me that the 92 Bridgestone Catalog describes the
RB-T as being their Road-ish fire-trail capable bike, pretty much just like
Riv is describing a Sam Hillborne now. But the bikes are not the same.

I would like to try a Ram sometime, or even a Roadini. I think I would
still want Moustache bars, though. I can't stand the posture of drops.

[RBW] Re: Bike of the Month: Sam Hillborne

2020-11-06 Thread Nathan Mattia
I think the reason people are so excited about the Hillborne’s is that they
resemble something of a more mainstream bike. I realize it’s not entirely
true, but it seems like for several months, the only bikes you could buy
from Riv had insanely long chain stays or were all step-thru mixtes.
I know that a Gallop or a Platypus may inevitably be in my future, but
people dig more traditional bikes as well.
I’m a bit surprised the middle sizes are sold out so quickly.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Jeffrey
This year I finally stepped up and built up a Hillborne after Rivving up a
1992 Bridgestone RB-T, a 1993 Bridgestone XO-2, and a 1983 Specialized
Expedition.
You can read all about and see those pics at
PipesBikesandLeather.com

Once I rode the Hillborne, all of those others faded into the memory of my
affections. The Sam is that good.

Re: [RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-06 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hey Ray,
Until a few months ago, I had both a 1993 XO-2 and a 1983 Expedition in my
stable. I sold the XO-2 when I got my Sam Hillborne in March and I’ve
never looked back. The X0-2 definitely felt speedier, but my actual ride
times in my 9-mile loop around my part of St. Louis showed the Expedition
usually winning out. I built both up with Albatross bars. Make sure you
get a longer stem than I had for my XO-2.

At the end of the day, the Expedition always felt a lot more solid and
required far fewer adjustments. Everything just worked, which I found
amazing on a 37 year old bike. I had racks on both at different times.
The Expedition never even blinked. Just kept rolling like a Cadillac.
The XO could get squirrely with a load.

Cleary bikes are only made for kids and have some real winners and
thoughtful design, imho.
The meerkat might be just the thing for her. BUT the 5 speed is $594.

My son rides a 24” Priority Start, which is decidedly NOT Rivish, but which
had some features he needed for his CP. It’s 399.

If you’re sticking to $200, I don’t think there’s ANYTHING out there new

All this is soo true!
I called a month ago for a Large Royal Trunksack, after hearing crickets
here on the forum for a month when I put out a WTB notice.
Turns out they never actually put Large Royal Trunksack into circulation.
 They don’t really exist.
But you know what, they had one at RivHQ in the back. It even had a
missing rivet, so Will sold it to me at a significant discount.
I am loyal for life now.

2020-04-23 Thread Nathan Mattia
Well, I’ve never done a group ride in my life, so I’m not suggesting that
for the meet up.

As far as I’m concerned, we can all agree to ride in from different points
on the compass so that we don’t have to calculate our velocity and distance
and radii of possible transmission under speed.

The point is, the conversation and comradery. Could they be had on an
online forum? Sure, but it’s not the same. Could we accomplish those
safely? I think so.

[RBW] Re: Let’s have a St. Louis Meet Up!

2020-04-23 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Bill,

When Samwise Hillborne was ready to roll last month, the FIRST ride I made
was from here in Richmond Heights, down the River Des Peres Greenway, to
Grant’s Trail. By far, my least favorite part was Grant’s Trail. I have
discovered that if the route is going to be long and flat, it at least
needs to be scenic. Riding Grant’s Trail reminded me of driving on
highways in Mississippi. Lots of trees with no scenery for miles and
miles. Except with Grant’s Trail, there aren’t even any Cracker Barrel’s.
I DID note that even on the semi-blustery day I was riding it, there were
a fair amount of people utilizing it, so that’s good.

Touché, Kevin.
Are you a man of the Lou? Allow me to explain. IT IS a great time for a
meet up. 1) I can’t imagine there are more than 10 of us in the area here
on the forum. But if there are, I’ll be thrilled. 2) I don’t need to
touch your bike, much less you. I can tell everything I need to tell from
a medically/ acceptable distance. And more importantly, we can talk. I’ll
even don the mask and gloves. 3) I don’t know about your area, but with
the reduced traffic, rides through the central corridor of the ‘Lou have
never been more enjoyable.

[RBW] Let’s have a St. Louis Meet Up!

2020-04-23 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello my fellow Riv-Heads of the Gateway City

In the 3 years that I have been back into bikes, and aware of Rivendell, I
have had the pleasure of running into 3 different Riv-Riders. One, the
venerable Jeff Smith, had enough time to stop and have a 1/2 hour
conversation before my wife called and started yapping about missing dinner.

The point is, that conversation was lovely, and I need more of it. I want
to see other people’s rigs up close and personal. I want to know which
local mechanics are worth their salt. I want to know some insights on the
local trails beyond my beloved Forest Park.

Let’s get together, shall we? There has never been a time (since, perhaps
college) when I have had more time to go for a ride and a get together. I
am literally free for at least a part of every day.

[RBW] Re: What have you learned during the isolation?

2020-04-20 Thread Nathan Mattia
Yes, the increase in crazy and faster driving was almost instant in St.
Louis. I usually drive 10 over, and I was getting passed on city streets
that aren’t passing types of streets.
I think part of it may be that some of our good driving habits are really
us reacting to what’s going on. For instance, I’ve ran way more red
lights in-intentionally in the middle of the night when no traffic was
around than I have in normal daytime traffic.

Yeah, I actually thought these were going to be friction shifters (love it
on my Expedition tube-mounts) but not so! I’m disliking it right now
because of some phantom shifts on my last 2 rides. I’m trying to figure
out if it’s just new bike cable stretching or if my shifters suck, or if
it’s the derailleurs that are at fault.

Was your Sam a Caliper or Cantilever? Do you run fenders as well?

The Expedition is a 56 cm which makes it just a wee bit too big for me. I
think a 54 would be perfect for that frame.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day: The Wait is Finally Over!

2020-03-20 Thread Nathan Mattia
Here’s the rundown, as best as I remember it while typing this fro bed:

-This is an MIT 51cm Samuel Hillborne, made for Caliper brakes.

-brakes are the Riv caliper Tektros

-Shimano Tiagra brake levers.

-shifters are some Shimano thumbies, rigged up by Rich at Kenton Cycle
Repair, in Portland.

-Deore XT derailleurs.

-13cm Nitto Tallux Stem

-Albatross bars w/ cheap cork grips from Amazon b/c Riv was out, and
Newbaum’s tape.

-Mark’s Rack

-Old Pletscher Rear rack.

-Riv Standard Sugino 2x Crank

-A23 Rims, Dynamo front hub 36 spoke, Deore Rear hub 36 spoke. The Swiss
double-butted spokes. Wheels built by Cursed Bikes here in the StL.

-Tires are 42mm Pari-motos

-8-Speed Cassette

-SKS pedals

-B17 Saddle, nicely broken in by an unknown previous owner. Came with my
old RB-T

-Blue Cable Housings.

-Busch & Muller IQ-X light

[RBW] Re: What Can Rivendell Make That's Not Custom?

2020-02-24 Thread Nathan Mattia
So far it’s looking like this

Orange Sam Hillborne 51” frame
Tektro Side-pulls
Albatross bars with Shimano thumbies and MTB levers
Nitto M12 front rack w/ small green trunk sack and Busch and Miller
Dynamo hub front wheel
MKS Silver Pedals
Brown Brooks B17 Saddle
Hammered Silver Fenders
Front Busch and Muller IQ-X light

Still trying to figure out tires. Maybe Fatty Rumpkin lights?
Might add a Pletscher rear rack or a stout Nitto if I find a deal.

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2019-07-31 Thread Nathan Mattia
Thanks, Nick. That’s good information. I honestly can’t imagine a bike being
more stable than my Expedition. It rides like an 80s DeVille. Classy and solid.
No phantom shifts, etc. But then, I’ve never taken it on a loaded tour yet.
Still, I think there may well be a Sam or a Homer in my future.

Here are some pics of the Expedition before and after I began to Riv it up.

2019-07-28 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Posters!
I am currently struggling (2+ years later) with the same question as the OP
here.

I’m looking at an AHH and it’s looking at me and I’m wondering if there could
be a love connection, BUT I already have an 83 Expedition set up like I would a
Hilsen, and I’m wondering how alike they would be.

Wgats the BB height on a 57 cm Hilsen?
