I am on a new Hillborne complete with the Kenda Quick Tendril tires in size 38. 
Really thought they would be the first thing to come off the bike. 
After 4 weeks they are staying on, smooth and supple ride.

My Cheviot has room for 700x40 tires with fenders according to Riv specs. The 
Cheviut will be used for daily commuting and loaded touring/s24o trips. Riding 
will be mostly done on pavement with some non-technical dirt and gravel trails. 
I value flat protection highly, as I loath changing flats on the way to work! 

I am coming from 26" wheel bikes (Atlantis and LHT) where I had phenomenal 
success with Big Apples 26x2.1 and Compass 26x1.75 tires. 

Rivendell has two options in the close to 700x40 size: Schwalbe Little Big Ben 
wire, RaceGuard Performance line, HS439 - 700c x 38 (40-622, 28x1.5) - 10128 
And 
Schwalbe Marathon GreenGuard HS420 tire 

Compass has the 700C x 38 Barlow Pass. 

Jack Browns seem too narrow (about 33.mm) when I have room to approach 
40mm. 

I would appreciate learning the merits of these tires and which would work 
better for me. What is the difference between the Marathons and Little Big Bens 
besides weight? Do the marathons give greater flat protection? Do the Barlow 
Pass have the flat protection of the Schwalbes? Are there other tire options I 
should be considering? I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by options and a bit 
clueless especially in comparing marathons to Lil Big Bens of almost identical 
size and price.

1969 Schwinn Twinn-which my oldest daughter (8) thinks is the coolest bike 
ever. Mostly because she doesn't have to pedal. And it has baskets for all her 
dolls. 
Jamis Capri 24 that's my oldest daughters ride. Fine little bike. First one she 
got to pick out all by herself. I asked her why she likes it best-she said it 
makes me feel like I'm a teenager-I'm in trouble. 
Surly LHT which usually sees super nasty weather duty. I'm not sure if I'll 
hang on to that one but it's a good bike so I probably will. 

Needless to say we have never had a car in our garage. My wife stopped 
complaining a while ago. So I guess it's ok.

For a size medium: Long arms, short tail (won't stay tucked, and was designed 
that way), pretty big in the body, fairly broad radius on the collar points 
(peter-pan-ish), red button thread. 

I wear a 15 1/2 X 34 dress shirt, and the medium is a good fit in the arms, 
short in the tails (I think it would benefit a lot from longer tails), and 
pretty loose in the body. 

Great fabric, lovely color, unfortunate oddities in the design that'll prevent 
me from wearing it to the office. The fabric and construction quality doesn't 
need quirky flair to differentiate it from other shirts.

P.S. If Rivendell wants to build bikey clothing (they've done some good stuff 
in the past, and they used to claim their long arms on shirts were for that 
purpose), I'd vote for the three-pocked derby sweater (that was a design 
classic, and I'd still be wearing mine if Woolistic hadn't lost it when it went 
in for moth hole repair), their Ktena 3-pocket summerweight jersey in a mossy 
green color like the Wooly Warm jersey (I wore the black one they made for a 
nano-minute until it was threadbare), and their colored armwarmers. The 
mustard-yellow ones were a perfect contrast with the green jersey, and easy to 
find in a pack while on the move.

I swapped out Noodles for the Albastache a while back on the Roadeo. 
This greatly improved all aspects of every ride on this bike. 
Very natural feeling and position, but must say I top out at 50+ miles on 
longest rides. 
Just not interested in massive long days in the saddle anymore.

decade, but eventuallty found them uncomfortable for long (50 miles +) days. 
Noodles are good all day long. But how are the Albastaches holding up on longer 
rides? I like that they're wider, have less drop, and come back further... and 
I never ride on the drops of the Noodles.

I ran the mustache bars on a quickbeam for a few years with 6mm stem, then 
swapped stem to a dirt drop and liked it a lot more. 
Now have the albastache bars on the roadeo with a dirt drop and the set up is 
perfect for me.

Well they may not be completely over. There still may be a chapter or two. 
Eric, we may have ridden in some brevets together in CA already but not have 
known each other. 
I started my brevet riding with Bill and Lois down in Santa Cruz, the Big Basin 
200k was my favorite. 
Also did the Duck Double once, the Clear Lake 600k and many others there. Did 
alot here in Colorado too. 
Just seem to enjoy my shorter country rambles more these days. 
Keep trying to make plans to get back to California to ride, if I do I will 
give you a shout for sure.

A little background, at 54 years young my brevet days are good memories. I love

SimpleOne more and more for the upright comfort. 

Ever since the Albastache bar was introduced I could not stop thinking about 
how these would be on the Rodeo. Made the switch a couple weeks ago. 
The comfort level is through the roof fantastic. The more upright position 
feels totally natural. 

Also put the longboards on and took off the big ring(never used it) and added 
the chain guard. 
And I obviously am not too concerned with fender lines :) The bag is a 
Carradice Barley. I plan on adding a front rack at some point with another bag 
or basket.

First thing I do when I take a new tube out of the box is throw away the valve 
nut. It has no purpose other than to hold the valve in place for the first few 
pump strokes, after which air pressure in the tube takes over. I use my finger 
to hold the valve for those first few seconds. 

Or, I suppose you could put the nut on, pump up the tire, and then take it off. 

Either way, once there’s air in the tube, the nut just sits there … or, as you 
note, sometimes lodges there.

have a pliers on my leatherman that I keep in my repair kit, so I guess that 
would work. Thought I'd alert y'all here in case you didn't. 

So if you haven't had a flat in a while, check your stem nuts today. Give them 
a whirl and free them up.

They are pretty worn as they are my go to glove for cold riding temps.

Rambouillet, 60 Quickbeam 
Current Rivs in garage: 59 Rodeo, 60 Simpleone 
The 60 Rambouillet was a great fit, no issues at all. Great for long road 
rides. 
I rode a demo Ram 62 for a weekend when I lived near WC. It was a bit large. 
Also like the bars up above the saddle.

foot 11). Based on those measurements I would be best fit on at least a 58 
Rambo - perhaps even a 60. 

By the way, if anyone has a Rambo that has a PBH similar to mine, I would be 
curious about your recommendation for size -- would I fit best on a 58 or a 60?

Melody in Arvada. I found them through Bilenky bikes as I was looking to set up 
my in-laws up with a Viewpoint tandem. When I looked in his garage and saw a 
Quickbeam I knew I'd met a kindred spirit. Little did I know that he had a 
treasure trove in the basement. Mike said he'd seen my posts about Thailand 
from this group and we talked about a bike trip to SE Asia. FYI, you guys are 
always welcome to Chiang Mai for a great bit of riding. I also have a house off 
the Colorado Trail in Jefferson, CO and we are here in July most years. Once 
again, you are always welcome to the house. We have plenty of room. Last time a 
made an order at Riv I threw down the gauntlet and said that Jefferson, CO was 
the S24O capital of the world. Dave said, Prove it. I'd like to propose a 
Colorado Riv Rendevous in the future where we can get together for a weekend of 
riding, campfires, and cooking. I think it might be in order to get Grant out 
of the Bay area for this one. We are taking a sabbatical in two years time when 
we'll be able to host in September. That's the best time of the year to see the 
color changing in the aspen groves right by the house. Thanks again for being 
an inspiring group of folks.

I had been going back and forth between JB's and 40 Supremes on the SO. 


With the JB's, zippy feel, the bike is a joy. 


With the 40 Supremes the SO has been nicknamed The Commander. It just has 
this take charge feel that I love, and reminds me of my Shwinn Bantam 
days of childhood in the 60's. 


There is still alot of room left and I want to try some bigger rubber like the 
Big Apples. 
Anybody have 50's on their SO/QB ?

Well, all it takes to convert the S3X into a standard 3-speed hub is to spin 
on a single-speed freewheel (or a White Industries Dos Eno 2-speed). The hub is 
splined for standard Sturmey Archer cogs, but also threaded (BSC) to accept a 
freewheel. 


While this is totally conjecture on my part, my gut tells me that the lack of 
pawls in the S3X--and the fact that it is made for fixed gear riding--makes it 
more durable. The White Industries Eno freewheel I put on should be extremely 
reliable, and it can be rebuilt fairly easily if anything does break (S-A hubs 
are much harder to get into and repair). 


So far, it's working like a dream. Shifting is easier than in fixed gear mode, 
because the bike coasts. 


Gearing for my current setup (46x16) is: 77-58-46 Go down to a 44T chainring, 
and you'll get 73-55-44 


I'll keep everyone apprised of any news about the setup. As I said, so far, so 
good.

chainring on the stock SR crankset. 

First thought about this setup: It works great. Shifting was flawless, and the 
hub is absolutely silent while pedaling. By comparison, the 8-speed hub made 
clicking noise while pedaling, while coasting … all the time. It was a bit 
annoying. The S3X also locks up the internals in the top gear (1:1 drive), 
making it very efficient. I'm hoping that, since there are no pawls inside the 
hub, it should be even more reliable than a standard 3-speed hub. (The middle 
and low gears, by the way, are 75% and 60% of the top gear. On Saturday's ride, 
the climbing never got steeper than about 10%, and even then just for short 
pitches. I dropped into the middle gear a few times, but I did more than 90% of 
the ride in a 44x16 gear.) 

Second thought is how nice it was to have 700x28 tires. There are about 4 miles 
of hard-packed gravel road on the DC route this year, which gave me no trouble 
at all. I can imagine some of the go-fast guys out there next week for the 
official ride struggling with 700x20 tires. 

I'm planning to change out the crankset to one with a 46T ring this week, which 
will address a minor issue of being spun out at fast cruising speeds with the 
44x16. I'll report back on that. 

In the meantime, I'm thoroughly enjoying the QB in its latest incarnation. With 
fenders, a Schmidt hub, great lighting, and now gears and coasting, this is a 
great randonneuring machine.

This is not a stock color but was painted at DD based on the colors of Marks 
custom cross bike. When I first saw pics of Marks bike I was taken back by the 
colors and ordered my Rodeo with those colors. Right after I got it Riv came 
out with the same color scheme on some of its other bikes. 


These were taken soon after I got the bike, the banana bag has been replaced 
with a canvas small Kevins bag. 
Great bike, True temper platinum OX frame, reynolds fork, made in the USA at 
Waterford.

That is a great choice of color Toshi. 
One of the most beautiful to my eye customs that I have seen at Rivendell (I 
used to live nearby) was a dark red custom. When I asked what color red that 
was the answer was ox blood red. That was years ago and I have not forgotten 
it. When (not if) my custom frame gets ordered that color will be in my top 3 
choices.

You will love it. I have owned mine for i think has been 3 years + now. It is 
made in the USA, has wonderful lugs and I marvel at its beauty and ride 
quality. 
When I first ordered it and was going through the build with Mark I wanted to 
put the Rolly Polly tires on it. Mark said that the frame was designed for the 
33. JB's. I was a little hesitant as I used the RP's on my previous 
Atlantis and Rambouillet and loved them. 
When the bike showed up and took it out for its first few rides I fell in love 
with the JB's and have them on the SimpleOne also.

Well, I did it! 

I ordered a Roadeo frameset. 53cm Ram Orange with cream accents, threaded fork 
(going to use my Nitto lugged stem). When the custom raffle was going on, I 
bought a gift certificate just so I could get entered into the raffle. I didn't 
win, of course, so I am using the gift certificate on the Roadeo frame. This 
bike is going to be my club riding bike and faster solo ride bike and the set 
up is going to be more aggressive than my Sam Hillborne. I have some time to 
think about wheels/components and general setup which I am actually thankful 
for as I could use the time to get some money together. Brifters or 
barends?hmmm. Can't wait for it though, it is going to be cool and a good 
compliment to my Sam!

Kinda sad that I missed out on what I believe was the Golden Years of

Rivendell wool jersey!  Always feel like when I find one my size on ebay 
they go for 4 !times the original price. I like pockets on my back I feel for

Aussie leather slipper wool socks  I had two pairs of these that were a size 
too big for me but I would still regularly used on camping trips. I loved them! 
But after a couple of washing the leather bottoms were done. When I went back 
to try to get them 


Wool Uno pocket shirt--- I remember seeing these on the website and thinking 
how smart it was but never jumped on it because I was a poor college student. 
Now Rapha sells one for like 80 dollars! I felt they were a smart design that 
was way before their time. 


Rivendell Brooks saddle? -- I've seen these floating around the internet from 
time to time. I thought it was a neat idea. 


Anyone else have other things they wish Rivendell still sold?

My ageing Miyata 6-10 sport tourer that I bought new in 1982 was starting to 
complain a bit. Went looking for another steel lugged frame. Saw a Romulus in 
Pegasus Cycles in Danville, Ca(2003). Asked about it and was told that it was a 
Rivendell, from just up the road in Walnut Creek. Found the humble Riv HQ and 
bought an Atlantis. Went through that, a Rambouillet, Quickbeam and 
Bleriot/Protovelo. Now own a SimpleOne and Rodeo. Love these bikes.

When my Rodeo was ready to ship, I asked Mark to send a pair of Rolly Polly 
tires with the order. He steered me to the JB's. Said the frame was designed 
for this tire size. My previous road bike was a Rambouillet and I loved the RP 
tires on it. I was hesitant to go with the 33.'s on the Roadeo. After the 
first ride I was hooked. 
My Roadeo is a 59 and my Rambouillet was a 60. Dont really notice a weight 
difference between the two. However the Roadeo is way lighter than my 
SimpleOne, but they both get ridden a good amount.

I ran the #'s through JimG's trail calc , and interestingly enough, on 59cm 
frames , the trail (and presumably handling) is the same when the Roadeo has 
28mm tires (60mm trail), and AHH has 40's (61mm trail). So if you like the way 
Rivendell's handle/steer, your choice of bike should include a decision on the 
size of tire you want to ride most of the time. 

The threadless headset mentioned above is nice on a Roadeo, too. I'm quite the 
convert to those. Would like to get that option on all Rivendell bikes.

I did the SFR Del Puerto Canyon Brevet last Saturday. The ride on Del Puerto 
Canyon Road was spectacular. It has been a while since I did a 24 mile 
continuous climb. Fortunately it was only steep at the end, but dang it was 
steep at the end. Beautiful country there, especially since it was cool and not 
yet raining. The only place to have a control out there is The Junction Cafe, 
and all the randos treated themselves to a big plate of whatever. I had a 
monster helping of chili fries. In front of the Junction Cafe, I spotted an 
unmistakeable rig. The rider had overnighted mear Mt Hamilton and his group was 
going to camp again Saturday night, despite the guarantee of rain. It was odd 
running into a familiar face and rig out in the middle of nowhere. Name that

The brevet finished with 2 hours of darkness and about 3 hours of rain, but all

Last Saturday was work on the bikes day out in the garage. Changed up the bars 
on the SO from mustache to albatross, and changed the noodles to mustache bars 
on the Roadeo. Also got some marathon supreme 40's from Riv to put on the SO. 
As I was starting to put on the rear of the SO I'm looking over at the 
Roadeoclearance for fatties? Riv says 35 is max for Roadeo, the supremes 
measure closer to 37.5, I gotta try. Take off the rear wheel and put on the new 
tire, fit it back in and I cant believe it fits. No room for fender but it 
clears chain stays and brake. Put the front one on and I am laughing in 
delight, the Roadeo is transformed into a beast! Took it out for a quick mixted 
bike path, road, and dirt trail ride, and tickled with delight on how versatile 
these bikes that Grant designs are. 


I will go back to JB's on the Roadeo so I can fender it up for winter, and put 
the supremes on the SO. They are a nice tire. Really shocked they fit on the 
Rodeo.

The 700 x 40 Marathon Supremes I have measure 40 mm on a Mavic A719 
rim (fairly wide touring rim). So the 37.5 mm is probably on a 
narrower, more high performance rim. The rim is the other variable to 
consider when pushing the envelope on tire fit. 

The 40s look nicely chubby on my Atlantis; they must give the Roadeo a 
wild look.

[RBW] Wooly Warm Sweater

I bought a vest back in '04 and it has been my favorite ever since.  The first 
run has tight arm holes and I will get a new one because the arm holes were 
made bigger. 



When Riv announced the pre order for the new run a few months ago I jumped on a 
Seargent sweater.  Just got it yesterday afternoon.  And although it was 90 
outside and I had just got back from a short favorite ride, I pulled it on and 
wowwie zowwie!  The fit was awesome, it felt so good.  I was concerned that a 
large size would be too small but is is perfect. (170lbs. and 5'10).  This 
sweater has large ribs and the old vest that I have does not have the ribs.  
This Seargent feels like it will last forever.  My old vest feels the same 
way.  These are awesome garments.   Thank you Rivendell for for bringing back 
this fantastic piece of clothing!

Im 50+, have drops on the Rodeo and mustache bars on the SimpleOne.  The m-bars 
on mated to a dirt drop stem.  I love this semi upright position, and almost 
prefer it alot of times to drop bar rides.

[RBW] Australian Wool

I am really glad to see in the email update that Riv is bringing in another 
shipment of the Australian Wool.  I hope that it is the same stuff that they 
had 5-6 years ago.  I loaded up  on long sleeve and short sleeve shirts then 
and some of them are getting tattered now.  If it is the same I will load up 
again!

I have already added one to my stable.  Jumped on one of the dark maroon 
prototypes.  It is so awesome.  Just like the Quickbeam that it replaced. 

That headbadge looks great and cant wait to fill the blank space on my headtube 
with it.  It is just not right to ride a bike from Rivendell that does not have 
an awesome headbadge.

Great looking Atlantis!  Looking at the pix, the chainstays dont look like they 
have the S bend, they look straight, and the front fork looks just like the one 
on my proto SimpleOne.  The fork crown on my Atlantis from '05 was different.  
Did you order something different with this Atlantis?

which allowed me to swing the $120 hub. 
I may paint the hub black before I build it, in order to make it 
completely unsellable... :^) 

It also has a thumbshifter, not a bar-end shifter, but I intend to 
mount the shifter-part to the seatstay, anyway.

Doug makes an excellent point.  When I rode my 61 Atlantis (pbh87) with ruffy 
tuffy's it felt like a good size, but when I put on the pasela 37's for dirt it 
made the bike feel to big, and wishing I had a 58.

Well, I just finished reading Taube's book on my iPad. I'm traveling 
for business and didn't want to wait. I have to say that even though I 
was familiar with the concepts, his clear evidence based presentation 
of the topic has left an indelible impression. 

No more second guessing or partially trying to do something that 
doesn't quite make a lasting change, as well as gaining the complete 
understanding of what has been happening with me since I first learned 
about carbohydrate addiction in 2002 after many previous failed 
attempts. 

I just got started on this approach with no dabbling or excuses. 20 
net grams of carbs per day and all animal meats and fats. I was 
already gluten free since June and lost about 20 lbs but had plateaud 
since August due to all the gluten free carbs I was eating. 

Now the path is fully clear and my paradigm on the subject has been 
fully reshapen. What more can I say but thank Grant for bringing this 
up to my attention with his post? 

Thanks Grant!!! I'll still be purchasing a few books when you have 
them in stock to give to family and friends as gifts of life.

Anne, you will have a blast.  You are going to be with such a good group.  Make 
sure to hook up with Lois Springsteen for some if not all of the ride.  She 
will help you out alot.  Bring a headlight and one for your bike and a 
taillight and reflective stuff too.  But dont over pack.  You will need less 
than you think and you will finish faster than you think.  There is not alot of 
climbing on the Grey Whale 200k. 

Congrats on signing up, the Santa Cruz Randon group is the best!

I have had good results with a solution of simple green, water and some type of 
small brush.  So far this fall/winter we have had very little precipitation, so 
no cleaning needed (yet).

When you adjust the back velcro snugly, the business end of the Splat 
assumes a curvature that stiffens it in the same way you can stiffen a 
sheet of paper by making a channel strong enough to roll some marbles 
down, or scoop dang sand. The fabric is the Stiff Scottish Stuff (3S) 
that starts with more substance than, say, seersucker. 
I used Splats during the later rains of last year, and never had 
flappage, even though the design might suggest it. I considered 
nipping the suggestion in the bud with another strap on the toe-end t 
hat could T into the arch strap, but that complicates construction 
and addresses a problem that's more in one's head than on one's foot. 

Splats are as simple as they can be made. They beg to be complicated 
in the name of improved, but I like them just the way they are. 
They're made with rich-man's fabric by a USA minifacturer, and they're 
still only $28. They repel a certain number of people because they 
look so funny, and shoe fetishists won't go for them, or fashionistas, 
and most females won't, either (if I can call that a prediction 
instead of a generalization, I may be able to get away with it). I 
predict two things: 

1. We'll sell 50 pair before the end of the year, with no impact 
whatsoever to our financial well-being, but maybe some fashion 
demerits and damage to our classy reputation. 

2. Within two years a slicker, more commercial version will appear, 
fulla features and widely accepted and available. 

A local guy commutes 60 miles a day by motorcycle. He's going to try 
them out, and may experience some flappage. At bike-riding speeds---so 
far, no problem!

[RBW] First Snow Yesterday

Hi Bunch, 

Got our first snow here yesterday.  Its a little late coming this year and 
after a great autumn I am not complaining.  

I like winter rides, and ride alot in winter.  Bundle up, wool layers, dialing 
in what works clothing wise to keep fingers and toes warm.  Its a bit more 
challenging in the winter.  I prefer the warm summer rides, but winter comes 
and the bike gets me out of the house for some mini adventures. 
My rides in winter are shorter, and on the single speed its fun working hard to 
stay warm. 

Yesterdays ride was 19 miles and 1.5 hours with a great little break.

[RBW] Another Roadworthy Simpleone('er two)

Hi Bunch, 



Jumped on the 60cm Simpleone a couple weeks ago.  Had to sell my Quickbeam a 
couple years ago and really miss it.  This will be my main winter bike and it 
will get very mucked up.  Wanted to get some pix before I fender up. 



Had the Phil rear hub w/ a 7speed re-done by Rich at Riv.  Kevens idea for the 
2 speed option.  When I had my QB I did not change gears much.  But a slightly 
smaller gear for those times when going against the wind on my way home from 
one of our many brewerys here in Fort Collins could come in handy.  Gotta wait 
for a headbadge.

Fantastic Dave! I came very very close to grabbing a simpleone while 
visiting Riv back in September. The oxblood paint is beautiful. 

I talked myself out of it though. I have a nice Peugeot singlespeed 
hanging in the garage that has not seen the road for 2 years now. 

I blame the Hilsen really.  Add one great all rounder bike to the mix 
and the fringe bikes start getting dusty!

Consider getting a second wheelset with the studded snow tires mounted on 
them.  This is what I do and it makes it easy to swap out the wheelset when bad 
wheather rolls in.

So I got the bike about a week ago and finally got it set up and ready 
to go. It needs fine tuning with saddle height and position as well as 
bar height but overall it's ready to go.  I rode it for a few miles 
and it's simply amazing. I am really glad I went this way. It's 
interesting to feel the difference in the ride of a country bike (my 
Bleriot) and the more road oriented Riv.  Both are insanely 
comfortable but there is a spryness with the Ram that the Bleriot does 
not have.

So I got the bike about a week ago and finally got it set up and ready 
to go. It needs fine tuning with saddle height and position as well as 
bar height but overall it's ready to go.  I rode it for a few miles 
and it's simply amazing. I am really glad I went this way. It's 
interesting to feel the difference in the ride of a country bike (my 
Bleriot) and the more road oriented Riv.  Both are insanely 
comfortable but there is a spryness with the Ram that the Bleriot does 
not have.

Got my new Rodeo a couple weeks ago, have ridden up, down and all around.

No offense at all here.  Email is not my #1 way to communicate, and I really 
kinda suck at it.  Its just that weight was not a major concern/care when 
ordering this bike.

I understand. I was asking because I am going to order a Roadeo and 
was wondering how much weight going classic would add. I am on the 
fence about which way to go.

Head up Diablo, for sure.  There are many options to go off the pavement on 
your way up or down.  Descending Diablo on pavement is so awesome!

Where would you go? 

I am going to be in the area this Thursday through till next Wednesday 
and want to set aside a day for a ride. I already spoke to Jay at 
Rivendell and taking a demo is no problem. 

My initial thought was to ride in/near/up Mt. Diablo. I have seen so 
many beautiful pictures of the area posted here it's hard to not want 
to go there. I also understand it's quick to access from RBW 
headquarters? 

I am thinking my best 2 possible days will be Monday or Tuesday. I 
would much prefer trails to roads. Something maybe 30-40 miles? Out 
and back from RBW would be optimal. I am not scared of climbing or 
rough stuff, but it does not have to epic. 

Any recommendations would be great, or if someone is planning a 
similar ride I would love to meet up too. Obviously want to work in 
some Riv visit time as well.
