[RBW] Re: Has anyone tried White Industries Urban Pedal?

2010-06-29 Thread JoelMatthews
I am interested in getting this combo, but I was wondering about your
comment re: dirty shoes. I've noticed that when I put a Sigg bottle in
my Nitto stainless cages there are stains from the contact, so I'm
wondering does stainless steel also stain shoes, or is that ONLY with
 the Ti?

Stainless is not as bad as Ti but does mark shoes as well. I
certainly could wrap it with something - handlebar tape, rim tape,
cork, twine if I had 40 minutes or so to spend. There are even some
costlier leather options for those so inclined. I resist as I like
the all metal look.

Also, if anyone who's got these pedals could post the dimensions of
them that'd be great. I got expensive Tiogas once and couldn't stand
them because of the tiny size after a while.

If you do not mind dirty shoes (and do not mind paying a whole heck of

Perhaps you should try a smaller size toe clip???
The White pedals extend forward from the pedal spindle about 3/8 to 1/2
further than a traditional old Campagnolo Pedal.

I run White Pedals and my strapless clips on my city bikes - there is no
easier combination to get in and out of than that set up.

White pedal dimensions - 8.5 cm wide x 7.5 cm long. With the large
Gordon half clip I have almost 14 cm.

So do these pedals definitely work with the Power Grips that RBW

I do not own Power Grips but cannot think of why they would not work
with the White Ind. pedals. The pedals have a lot of different places
to attach the grips. In fact, I believe I saw a jpg with the set up
somewhere, but could not find it in a quick google search. I'ld check
with Riv. They must have seen some White pedals by now. Or call
White themselves. It is a small operation. I am sure they will be
glad to help.

I got a pair of these for my custom Rivendell (which Mark Nobilette
built last week. Next stop: JB.) I got the pedals from Rene Herse,
but I do want to pick up those Bruce Gordon clips to go with. Pay no
more than $195 for these pedals.

Also, last night I put some Lyotard Marcel Berthets on my girlfriend's
Bleriot. This is the pedal that WI knocks off so beautifully. It's
all about that massive, curving, art-deco kick tab.

I'm thinking about getting a pair of Dromartis, the type without

I have both. The Lyotards are more narrow and not as long. I can
measure tonight when home if you want exact figurs.

I love the Lyotards (in fact I have 3 NOS sets in my home display

quality is no where near that of the White.

Assuming the weight is correct, there is no way the platform will be
more durable than the heavier competitors. The listed pedals are all
primarily aluminum. Higher grade aluminum costs more. VO's
manufacturer must have used a lighter grade of aluminum.

Yes, I have a set of the White Pedals with the Bruce Gordon half
clips. I was an early adopter and bought this combo before Bruce
started offering it at a discount. These pedals need a clip, an BG's
are great. I recommen the combo.

The pedals themselves are wonderful. They fit my size 10 medium
weight shoe easily. They spin as well as anything, even the MKS RX-1
(which the Whites replaced). I guess you could say they are heavy in
a relative sense anyway. The weight has not bothered me.

Have not had to do any maintenance on mine yet, but it appears as
though it will be quite easy. There is a (rather lovely) brass nut
that you pull off to grease.

Definitely recommended.

I'm surprised Joel M. hasn't chimmed in yet. If I remember correctly
he's a big fan of these pedals. Chances are I'll impulsively buy a
pair someday but there's other bike related expenses that are taking
 priority for now.

Just came accross it on an online review and am curious to see if anyone has
tried it and how it compares to the platform pedals Riv sells.

I winced at the price. But, if they are as comfortable and easy to
get into as they look, it is something to consider.
