The video was slightly vertigo-inducing, but that does indeed look like an
awesome ride--scenic, nice dirt mix, appears to be low traffic, too. And
the high school jazz band sounds pretty darn good.

I do have a Road+ frame in a box. That build may happen this year, or
might not. I have a ton of riding ambitions that I want to complete before
I get into another build. I do not anticipate pushing out any of my Black
Mountain bikes. They are absurdly inexpensive and all have been awesome.
The only reason I can imagine not keeping one is that I wanted to give one
away to somebody I cared about who had zero money and couldn't afford even
an absurdly inexpensive frameset.

I love my Monster Cross Disc, which has knobbyish 40mm tires. I’ve often
thought of supplementing it with a rim brake Monster Cross for road bike use
with 32mm tires and fenders.

To keep this on topic, the Roadeo looks quite nice!

I agree with Austin agreeing with me. :)

More clarification of the MC slot in my stable: I'm a devoted member of
San Francisco Randonneurs and my favorite part of the SFR calendar is their
adventure series. On the adventure series they have two 200k brevets that
very well might be the two hardest 200k brevets in America. Assuming
equivalent weather and wind, I know of no other routes that are as tough as
La Ruta Loca 200k and Marin Mountains 200k. I love those rides so much
that I maintain a slot in my stable just for the execution of those rides,
and my Black Mountain Monster Cross is my weapon of choice. Here's a music
video I filmed when I first completed La Ruta Loca. 126 miles, 12,500 feet
of climbing, roughly 50 miles of dirt. Not only am I repping El Cerrito
with my racing kit, the music is also the El Cerrito High School Jazz
Ensemble. For coffee snobs, the song is Kopi Luwak.

So I own both a Roadeo and a BMC Monstercross amongst others. Road racing
is not something I've ever done nor will ever do, so my comments below do
not apply to that category.

That said, the BMC Monstercross is actually a pretty road bike as well.
Even Bill rated it a 5 as a road *racing* bike. Take the word "racing" out
of the equation and I'd rate it higher.

Before I got the Roadeo, the Monstercross was my primary "endurance" road
bike running 38mm Barlow Pass tires. I had a couple calls with Mike V.
trying to choose between a Road and a MC and have no regrets with my
choice. When I want to enjoy the rougher stuff, I swap out my wheelset for

Bottom line, I concur with Bill's ratings based on my experience.

[RBW] Re: New ROADEO

2020-01-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
John W,

It really depends on what you are asking. Where I put a bike in my stable
is exactly where I decide to put it. I put the Black Mtn Monster Cross in
the "monster cross" slot of my stable. That's where I'd put it. Is that
what you are asking?

If that isn't what you are asking, then here are a bunch of other questions
that may be closer to what you are after:

*On a scale of 1 to 10, how good is each of those four bikes at being a
rim-brake-monster-cross bike? *

Black Mountain Monster Cross: 9+
Black Mountain Road: 2
Leo Roadini: 3
Roadeo: 2

*On a scale of 1 to 10, how good is each of those four bikes at being a
road racing bike? *

Black Mountain Monster Cross: 5
Black Mountain Road: 8
Leo Roadini: 6
Roadeo: 9

*On a scale of 1 to 10, how good is each of those four bikes at being an
all-rounder? *

Black Mountain Monster Cross: 8
Black Mountain Road: 4
Leo Roadini: 5
Roadeo: 4

Those three road bikes would make lousy off-road bikes for me. If the
Roadeo was my only bike, I would not use it as a mountain bike. I'd mainly
limit my riding to things you can use a road racing bike for.

If my Black Mountain Monster Cross was my only bike, it would serve as a
good platform for a lot of different kinds of builds. I'd tune my build
for the things I wanted to do. I'd retain tire selection as the main way
to change the bike's personality from ride to ride. I'd have no qualms
about running Barlow Pass Extralights (700x38) on it for it's raciest
configuration.

I own a 59 Black Mtn Road, a 59 Roadeo, and I used to own a 57 Leo. Some
5'10" folks would have chosen a 54cm Leo. The 57 Leo was a much larger
bike than the 59 Roadeo or the 59 Black Mtn. That site doesn't have my
rendition of the Black Mtn so I used the 58. The 58 Black Mtn and the 59
Roadeo are very close to the same bike (fit wise). The difference is Seat
Tube Angle with which I am very familiar. I run my saddle about 1cm
farther forward on the rails on the Roadeo because the STA is more laid
back. They both fit like a glove and fit the same. The Leo is a lot
different with a huge stack, which I described above.

Rivendell lugs, Mark Nobilette, all add to the gloriousness of the Roadeo,

if I was wearing racing kit." For me, another way of thinking about bicycle
differences would be to ask, "would I run flats or clipless on this bike?"
That might also determine if I'd wear a racing kit or not on that bike.

Last winter, I did a big 80 mile dirt road loop in southeastern Arizona
with a group that included Ultraromance (I don't want to start an
Ultraromance debate here--he was always been friendly and open with me). He
was riding a pretty 61cm blue Roadini with a mix of old and new components
with cream colored 38mm tires stuffed in. I was on my Ritchey Ascent with
650b x 48mm tires. I rode the most technical part of a big long descent
right by him and I was impressed with how fast and confidently he road it
on dirt. I know this is mostly due to the rider, but I suspect the long
chainstays helped too. Based on chainstay length (also not trying to start
a fight about that here) I would guess the Roadini would have a slight
advantage among these three if you were going to do more or your riding on
dirt roads than pavement.

Bike insights has geometries for the Roadeo, Roadini, and BMC road on their
site and using the "Bike on Bike" comparison, the 63cm Roadeo and 61cm
Roadini are very similar. The only sizable differences look to be stack
height and chainstay length:
https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries[]=5bb29e327581960016665a33[]=5b8578f548f3a30004789b19[]=[]=

When you compare the 63cm Roadeo and 62cm BMC road, they are really
similar, but the BMC road has a bit less trail, and a bit longer reach, and
less stack. Bike insights categorizes the BMC as "Somewhat aggressive" and
the Roadeo and Roadini as "Somewhat upright." Bill's first-hand
observations, which I'd trust more than the numbers based Bike Insights,
are interesting because just looking at the numbers, the Roadini and Roadeo
would seem more similar to each other than the BMC.
https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries[]=5a1e64fe62315c0018d7[]=5b8578f548f3a30004789b19[]=[]=

As some of you might have seen, I posted at WTB for a 63cm Roadeo a few
weeks back. I had a couple of responses, and I let one in the Bay area slip
away whilst I dithered. Part of my hesitation was that a 62cm BMC road is
such as bargain and is pretty similar, minus the fancy lugs, and MUSA
heritage. I like lugs fine, but I nice fillets and even clean TIG work, so
I've also thought about having another US builder make me a medium reach
brake road frame along the lines of the Roadeo, but minus the lugs.
Nobilette was one of the builders I was looking at after listening to a
podcast interview with him over the holidays where he said that things were
slow and he was looking for more work. It looks like the good folks at
Rivendell heard this as well and stepped in. So now, if I'm ordering fancy
new semi-custom, it might make more sense just to get a Roadeo as I'd be
able to support both Rivendell and Nobilette with the purchase. It really
just all comes down to budget, at 4.5x the cost of the BMC Road, the Roadeo
is definitely more of a stretch to afford.

[RBW] Re: New ROADEO

2020-01-14 Thread John G.
Fender line is much better now, thank you very much! Just needed an extra
5mm spacer.

Adding to Bill's and Mike's thoughtful description. At no point did Bill
ever say the Roadeo was uncomfortable, but for some folks, the term "race
bike" might connote uncomfortable and aggressive geometry. Personally, I've
found the Roadeo to be an extremely comfortable brevet/century bike, both
physically and mentally. It just sorta handles itself after a while. I
sometimes prefer standard diameter tubing, but I do think the (very light)
OS tubing on the Roadeo contributes to its reliable but lively handling. I
know I often get hung up on wall thickness and tubing, but I really think
geometry and fit make more of a difference than standard vs OS tubing.

And yeah, it's fast. Am I faster on my Roadeo than I was on my Black
Mountain? Maybe a bit, but not so much faster than I get home in time to
kill an extra 20 minutes browsing iBob.

If I ever move this Roadeo on, it will be because I have a
similarly-purposed Weigle that fits just a smidge better. But I also
believe you can never have too many road bikes that fit 32mm tires.

2020-01-13 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi LL:
For small sizes that you're seeking, I'd recommend a call to Riv. There's
sometimes a hidden treasure in the warehouse of frame sizes at the
extremes. I'm sure they'd like to sell them, if they have them.

Good luck!

Rich,

Thank you for the notes and prompts. It's always a bit of an easter egg
hunt to find the right and still available Riv frames (via dealers and
email inquiries). I'm thinking the 47cm or 50cm Roadini might be the ticket
(raising an internal subdebate about whether I would prefer 650b or 700c on
this bike).

Side note: I saw a really nice Atlantis build at the Rivelo shop in PDX. 56
cm with 650b wheels. It would be a great bike for the right person.

I appreciate the notes on the Hilsen as well.

collection (which I do) only "makes sense" if I'm going to keep them at
different locations (which I do). My Black Mountain Road lives at my mom's
house. I can grab it off the hook and rip off a 20 - 120 mile ride and
it's like an old friend. The Black Mountain Road is different from the Leo
in exactly the ways the Roadeo is different from the Leo.

Another way to represent the difference in attitude that I've used before
and that a couple listers found useful is this: On the Roadeo and on the
Black Mountain Road, I feel a little bit weird if I'm not wearing racing
kit. On the Leo, I felt a little bit weird if I was wearing racing kit.

Thanks, Bill. So, what you're saying is ... the Rodeo is a race
bike? Point driven home!

Kidding aside, a couple of your points popped out to me, applying to any
type of bike and riding:
- Actual and perceived speeds are likely significantly different.
Geometry, and tires, fool riders.
- Toys are nice to have! No justification needed.

[RBW] Re: New ROADEO

2020-01-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
They are very different bikes and both excellent. The Roadeo is a very
traditional, conventional, but mature road racing bike. I have no doubt in
my mind that if we had a time machine and swapped Greg Lemond's Della Santa
with a Roadeo, he would have have won the same races. If we gave Miguel
Indurain a 21 pound Roadeo to replace his 24 pound Banesto bike, he would
have still won the tour de France several times. The Roadeo is a race
bike. If you want a race bike and do the fun kind of riding that people do
on a race bike, it's a spectacular bike for that. Traditional,
conventional, optimized, stunningly beautiful, masterfully crafted RACE
BIKE.

The Leo Roadini is an evolved road bike. If your approach to road riding
is more relaxed than a real race bike kind of approach, you might prefer
it. The bars will be higher. I ran my bars slammed and they were still
high. It feels less racy, it is more comforable. I felt I was in a sofa
it was so easy and leisurely, and for me the surprise was it was
objectively faster. Faster or not, more comfortable or not, it did not
feel like I was racing. People who want their road bike to feel like they
are racing might be turned off to it. Defintiely people who want a
traditional, conventional race bike look are pretty consistently turned off
by the Roadini.

If you need you bike to feel like a race bike, you will likely prefer the
Roadeo. If you need your bike to look like a race bike, you almost
certainly will prefer the Roadeo. If your strength and flexibility demand
that you get the bars low, your will definitely prefer the Roadeo.

If you are looking for a more evolved and dignified 'just ride' approach to
paved riding that costs ~$1800 less and may be measurably faster for you,
then the Leo is a good option.

Why do I have a Roadeo when the Leo was so good? I want a race bike in my
stable. I actually have three race bikes in my stable. The Roadeo is a
race bike. The Legolas is a race bike. My hard tail mountain bike is a
race bike. I use them for rides that are fun to do on a race bike. The
race bike slots in my stable are far more "toy" slots than "tool" slots. I
own them because they are fun to own, and fun to ride. If I moved to a
one-bike living situation, all my race bikes would be out the door. That's
a fact. I'd likely keep a brevet bike that can do errands, commuting, road
rides, touring, and light trail stuff. That may be my current Sam
Hillborne, or it could be my actual brevet bike, a Norther Lyon.

I see , thank you !

Apparently the email arrive in their own time.

The Rodeo looks just like a Rodeo ;-)

As to the bit about the "secret menu", I always considered any mainstream
production model Riv made as available as a custom, as it's not as if the
know-how is lost, forgotten or forbidden . Just ask ! Since it's a
custom that also means if there was some detail that wasn't on the original
that you'd wish it had, and it was "in line" with the Riv sensibilities,
it's likely a yeah. Pretty great !

I love my parallel TT Bombadil . I've not ridden since the last warm spell
a few weeks ago so I went for a jaunt between the rain bands around the
driveway and then up and down a few streets to stretch my legs, so to
speak, and it was Grand ! All this talk about long chainstays and
wheelbases reminded me how at the time it was longest production frame in
both that Riv had ever made.

I don’t like the price of the RH crankset, but if you want an 11 speed
compatibility, 177mm arms, a very narrow Q factor in a subcompact double (I’ve
run 30/46 and 32/48), there are no other options that I know of. IMO the RH
style looks perfect for a Roadeo. If you can live with 170, 175 cranks with a
slightly wider Q factor, there are other choices.

If I recall correctly, all Rivendellian Atlantises are of the “2” variety,
since the name was borrowed from a Bridgestone product called Atlantis. Thusly,
whether an Atlantis is from Toyo, Waterford or the Taiwanese company, they are
all called Atlantis 2.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the compliment! I'm planning to add it to a
"resources" sticky over on the iBOB list sometime soon. I'm not quite sure
how aligned this project is with the Riv philosophy, so I've been
relatively quieter about it here.

I'm also planning to write a blog post about the project once I have more
data (and time to write something more professional).

Of course, the problem now is figuring out which ones those are! I guess

I do have another sheet where I track frames I've measured against

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread Lum Gim Fong
True, but tires and wheel size/makes made no diff, in my experience between the
bike models.
(GB30,42/Compass28,32, 38, 42/Pasela/Swifty/Rumpkin/Marathons). Whole spectrum
tried. Alleged fastest and alleged slowest tires made. 650b/700c. Twin
Holla’/GB/Pacenti/Synergy/A23/CR18/, LX/VO,Velocity/105, Sapim/DTSwiss/Wheelman
wheelsets.

Each bike model retained its innate ride characteristics no matter what I used,
though suppler tires helped them each along individually. All my Rivs had
Rivish Nitto/Sugino builds, except my 55 Bleriot was Ultegra’d out. Still rode
like my heavier 53 Nitto/Sugino Bleriot. Sam rides like Bleriot. Ram a step
above. Roadeo a leap above them all.

Roadeo in a different efficiency/speed class than my other 4 rivs.

Regardless of tire model, I found that a Bleriot still rides like a Bleriot;
Sam like a Sam; a Ram like a Ram, etc. Roadeo a step above in ease of movin on
down the road.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Keep in mind that these tubes are OS, so the 8/5/8 will flex similarly to a
9/6/9, and the 6/4.5 would translate roughly to a 7/5/7 in terms of
measurable flexing properties. It of course matters more when you are
comparing Rivs to vintage standard tubing steels like 531, Columbus SL,
Ishiwata 022 and Tange Prestige.

I kind of get the planing thing, but I'm not convinced that tubing of the
main triangle is the main reason a bike will feel good. Tires as we know
makes a big difference, as do lots of other factors that add up. Bottom
line for me these days is, I'm pretty easy to pleasy.

What kinda wheels you have on it?

The Ram rode the same for me at any weight. Not as good on hills as Roadeo,
but good enough and a fantastic, comfy ride.
It also has a little more room for fenders and 32mm tires than Roadeo.
I love the blue paint, too. If I ever have to repaint the Roadeo I think I
would do it in Ram blue, if I can ever find out what that color is called.

But if someone wanted to trade me their Roadeo for it I would take them up

Aha. That may explain the difference in your experience. I'm almost 30 lb
heavier, and I'm pretty sure that the tubing on my customs is not as
thinwall (Chauncey Matthews came by to pick up the '99 Joe Starck frame --
f/f/hs -- for alteration. He lifted it and said, "Huh. Not so light.") But
damn, that bike just feels fast, and it has been surprising me in that way
for coming on to 20 years next April. Light wheels, certainly, but I'm
convinced that fit/position/geometry has a effect. (The '99 Joe is 18.1 lb
on a digital scale with conventional parts.)

For the curious, the tubing wall thickness measurements I've taken of
several similar-sized Rivendell bikes can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

Please note that I strongly suspect Riv uses different gauges of tubing for
different sizes, so these measurements almost certainly do not reflect the
tubing spec of smaller frames. I look forward to measuring other sizes and
finding out for sure!

That said, since the Hunqapillar, Rambouillet, Roadeo, and Hilsen shown at
that link are all in the same size "neighborhood" it probably does give a
fair idea of the relative differences between the models.

If anyone is around the SF Bay Area and would like their bikes measured,
please drop me a line!

get out of my own way on the 8/5/8's, regardless of tire types.

So maybe the lighter tubing of the Roadeo behaves better for my weight
class? Maybe 8/5/8 is more cooperative for people in the 175+lb. range like
a 6/4/6 would be for people below 175? Just speculating. But I have owned
three 8/5/8 Rivs and the Ram was best at climbing and had lighter tubing
rear triangle than Sam and Bleriots I had. But it still would bog down on
hills but not as bad as the Bleriots and Sam did for me. Though I have
loved riding them all.

2018-09-22 Thread Mike Godwin
Ooh, ooh, I got one too! :) Found it on local CL, looking for an Atlantis
at the time but this came up for a steal of a price, so who could
resist? White with blue accents It too has downtube cable stops rather than
shifter bosses. I would prefer shifter bosses, but for a bike in my size
and decent parts and great price within 20 miles ... Came with Rich built
ultegra hubs/open pro rims, 3x 14 g straight gauge spokes. The bike felt
dead, not Surly Crosscheck dead but nothing like a Legolas, or my Lemond
Zurich or even mid 70s Bob Jackson. The shoes it runs on now are velocity
aerohead/dura ace 7x00 (thanks Mark R) with 14-16-14 g spokes, continental
4000 GP extra special wunder bar etc tires. Much more lively ride. Fits 36
mm measured tires. Braking by Royal Gran Comp/koolstop. I removed the
bulky ultegra brakes and fugly 4-arm 105 black crank. It sports a Ritchey
Logic crank with willow rings (thanks David B).

As I understand it the Roadeo has significantly thinner tubing than the Romulus
and Ram I owned. Noticeable enough that my one very short ride around the
building at RBW told me I was riding a different, whippier, snappier bike than
what I was familiar with. To my mind it was the difference between a Riv road
bike built to a survivable standard under fairly stout riders, and one with a
definite weight limit. Almost a "production custom", if you will.

2018-09-21 Thread Patrick Moore
That's very pretty, and built much as I would build one.

You say it's much faster than your Rambouillet. I found my Ram spritely,
but not as spritely as my lightest road bike, but then there was a big
difference in the wheels -- MA40s with even Parigi Roubaix 29 mm 700C tires
are going to be heavier than 370 gram 559 Sun semi-aeros with 178 gram Elk
Pass tires.

What do you attribute the difference to?

I rode the gofast today. I have to say, as much as I like my other bikes,
including the "commuter" Riv custom, if someone held a gun to my head and
said, "Choose 1," I'd have to choose the gofast: it just seems to
accelerate and maintain speed easier than any of the others; and I ride
principally for fun.

2016-05-03 Thread Eric Karnes
Ha. Fantastic! It had swankier wheels back then.

I've been riding it for the last two weeks and it's absolutely fantastic.
I've done fast-ish (for me) road rides, gravel paths, and some general
wandering with lunch, gloves, and a raincoat in my Saddlesack...it has
excelled at everything. I may also try some cyclocross tires like the
Roadeo recently featured on the Blug. With the exception of my old Trek
commuter, I've decided to sell all of my other bikes (if anyone is looking
for a neat old Litespeed mountain bike or barely-used CrossCheck, lemme
know).

I ended up taking of the albatross bars off and replacing them with VO
porteur bars. I really like this setup. With road levers set up like on a
mustache bar, it gives a bunch of hand positions. And it gives a much more
responsive feel than the high, wide albas.

And a SE PA non-race ride sounds like a great plan.

You will probably just try them all at some point if you are anything like
me, but my faves over the years have been the Porteurs, the Albastaches,
and Noodles. It may take a while to get comfy on a Noodled bike, but they
are great for longer rides if you put the time into finding the right
coordinates. For me that was 1-2cm above saddle height. I find myself
migrating back to uprights now due to my love of
off-road/gravel/exploratory stuff. Choco's look to be perfect, but I
haven't gotten time to put them on my Hunqa yet.

Thanks all!

I may give the drops another shot...I agree that this bike looks pretty
sweet with them and I've always suffered from a bit of drop bar envy. But
with anything longer than a 50mm stem (even with the bars high), I start to
feel it in my back and neck pretty quick. Maybe I'll bring it to the LBS

As it's my first Rivendell, I can't really speak to how it compares with
other models. But I rode it a few more times this week and would describe
it as a really wonderful mix of sporty and stable. I don't go super fast
when I'm riding, but I love the feel of a light, sporty steel road bike
(like my 531 mid-eighties Trek). This frame has that really nice quality,
but also feels much more stable when descending and turning (even with bars
that weren't specifically designed for it...which I feel speaks to
Rivendell's fantastic geometry). My old Trek feels squirrelly on rougher
roads and gravel. But with Jack Browns, it works flawlessly on crushed
gravel paths...and still feels quick and responsive. Even though it's
marketed as a 'club-ride' bike, like any Rivendell, it excels at lots of
different tasks. I wouldn't take it on single track, but with some 35mm
Cyclocross tires, I'd feel totally comfortable doing rougher dirt paths,
fire roads, etc. It's feels like a solid-enough bike.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo

2016-04-27 Thread jeffrey kane
Hey Eric,

I love fast(ish) road bikes and upright bars as well. I've spent a good
deal of time on Alba's and recently configured a new ride with new
choco-normal -- primarily because I liked the flatter look of the choco to
the Alba. However, having been on narrow drops for so long (I took a 3 year
break from Alba's) my only complaint is similar to yours --- I just wish
they were narrower. So I thought the same thing: I should have just snagged
a pair of V/O Porteurs because for once, I can since I'm not using bar end
shifters and won't have to compromise with those not-so-great looking 23.8
road bar diameter "city" levers.

Anyway -- that's long way around to let you know (if you didn't) that the
V/O bars aren't as well thought-out as the Alba's and Choco's in that they
can't run 22.2 mtb levers and bar ends ... that bit of brilliant
forethought seems only attributable to GP and Co. designed bars.

I was never able to find any non-race oriented groups in my 5 Philly years.
However there are so many paths and places to ride you'll bump into some folks

Congratulations on the new Roadeo. Please report on the ride qualities and
post plenty of photos.

What exactly is reamed? Were they undersized, or irregular? I've never
gotten a frame from Rivendell (five so far) that wasn't spot on.

The build is done except bar tape. The seat tube and head tube had to be

slight tweaking. I'm really tired and will post photos as soon as I get
 them taken. Good night!

I cannot comment about ride so much because I haven't been able to give it
a proper ride due to poor air quality in my area. So frustrating. However,
I do believe my stem extension might be a centimeter too long in casually
pedaling up and down my street. That may need swapping down the line.

Here are a few details about the current build:

   - Nitto 176 Dream Bars
   - Nitto Deluxe stem
   - Nitto Jaguar seatpost
   - Sugino Mighty Tour Cranks with 48x34t chain rings
   - Campagnolo Veloce brake/shift levers
   - Shimano 105 derailleurs with Ultegra 12-30 10-speed cassette
   - Jtek Shiftmate to allow Campy shifters with Shimano drivetrain
   - H Plus Son TB14 rims laced to Ultegra hubs with Wheelsmith double

   - Grand Bois Cerf 28mm tires

I had a couple add-ons brazed on in the form of downtube shifter bosses

This frame really is beautiful in person. The clichè that pictures don't

I had a couple add-ons brazed on in the form of downtube shifter bosses
and a seat stay-mounted chain hanger to keep the chain secure when the rear
wheel is removed like 80's steel bikes used to have. The lead time was
about 4 months even with added braze-on.

This frame really is beautiful in person. The clichè that pictures don't
do justice is true here. They call it white, but it's actually an
off-white, almost cream color in person and it looks great with the red
 accents!

The build will begin Saturday and I'll try to take some pictures of the
 progress.

 Paul

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo frameset has arrived!

2014-01-04 Thread Paul G
The build is done except bar tape. The seat tube and head tube had to be
reamed but all the threads were perfect. The RD hanger was perfectly aligned
as were the rear dropouts, but the front dropouts needed a very slight
tweaking. I'm really tired and will post photos as soon as I get them taken.
Good night!

Re: [RBW] Re: new Roadeo

2012-04-25 Thread Steven Frederick
As I recall, since the Roadeo is intended as an alternative to carbon bikes
for fast club rides, the figuring was that most would end up running some
style of brifter so the DT shifter mounts were left off in favor of cable
stops.

how used to them I am. I have thought about doing a brifter Shimergo

Beautiful bike Forrest, thanks for sharing it.

What is the thinking behind putting the Rodeo out without DT shifter

to add dt shifters after the fact. If I bought a Rodeo (unlikely although
tempting), I would want to put dt shifters on it.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo frame. Now what?

2011-04-03 Thread MichaelH
I run Ritchey Race Slicks on my old racing bike. Affordable and
reasonably durable. I do however sense the bike handling is quicker
than 23mm Michelin clinchers and certainly a lot quicker than my Ram
with good 28s.

It is surprising how fast wheel weight can build up though. Yesterday
I realized that, having retired from work and commuting, that I no
longer needed the MA 40's and 38MM Avocets on my All Purpose Ebisu, so
decided to throw on a set of wheels with Open Pro Rims and 32 MM
Pasellas. I did a before and after weighing on a bathroom scale and
was amazed to see a 1 1/2 lb difference.

Good ideas. I like your Ram.

On Mar 28, 1:14 pm, MichaelH mhech...@gmail.com wrote:
Great question.  I am going to assume that this is a go-fast bike,
built for fast club rides and maybe an occasional rondenee, yes?

For a drive train you will want a nice compact double, like the better
Sugino Alpina, or the Da Vinci, unless you have you heart set on a
TA.  A 48/34 mated to a Hyperglide 12/27 cassette gives .  If you need
or want a lower gear (I do) I would strongly recommend springing for
the White VBC, which is a beautiful crank and you can set it up as a
44/30 with an 11-28 cassette for an excellent gear range and shift
pattern.  Still cheaper than TA musa.  For BB anything economical
will do, and for this bike i would definitely not go PW.

Wheels - Open Pro rims mated to either White or Ultegra hubs,
depending on whether you prefer sealed or serviceable bearings.  I
like the White hubs - lighter and cheaper than PW.  Some people find
them noisy, and they do have a loudish hum which you can hear when
 coasting below 17/18 mph.

Silver Down Tube shifters.  Faster than BE, cleaner looking than SIS
and in many situations, faster too. Least fussy shifters money can
buy.  If you have never used them you have nothing to loose but your
 fear.

Aero levers mated to your hand size.  I like the fat Cane Creek/
Tecktro, but some people find the narrower 105's more to their
liking.  Brake caliper's depend on your fender choice.  If you are
putting a nice pair of Honjo Hammered (which would look great on this
bike) then the first choice should be Paul's Racer Ms, unless you are
really up for scouring the internet for old school and using a
crescent wrench to set them up.

Bars are pretty personal but very few people have ever been
disappointed with the noodle shape.  Nitto Pearl or Tech. delux stem.
If you search around you can find lighter, silver posts than Nitto,
 but they are good posts.

Saddle, if you want to safe some weight, consider a Terry Ti-Fly.  A
good compromise between a Brooks or Selle Anatomica and a full blown
 racing saddle.

Pedals, a light weight touring pedal - I like the Speed Play Frogs,
which work well with my Keen Commuter sandals.

I have my Ramboulliet set up as a go fast, here's what it looks like:

Most important of all:  ENJOY THE PROCESS; ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING
 ANYWHERE!
