I tend to agree with this, Bill. I have various bikes with various forms of
boltage, and would prefer to never worry about a QR being incorrectly tightened
or accidentally knocked open. They work well enough to not replace, but they're
kinda pointless.

Benz asked : "What gives? Security concerns?"

I'm not sure what exactly you are asking when you ask "what gives?"
Nothing gives. QRs are sufficient to hold wheels on, in most situations.
I have QR wheels on most of my bikes. They are fine. I have nothing
against QRs, far from it. I'm just pointing out that the only people who
NEED them are people with a team car following them. I carry the tools I
need to do the mechanical things I need to do. A wrench to loosen a 15mm
axle nut is just one tool in the kit.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-08-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
A couple people commented on my red/orange lugged Nitto stem.

I used to have a 56cm Bombadil. I bought it 'off the rack'. It was
powdercoated orange. When I got it, they also got a batch of Bullmoose
bars powdercoated in the same colors, so I managed to get a bullmoose bar
that matched my Bombadil exactly.

Later, as always happens, I decided to set up a drop bar cockpit. I needed
a 9cm stem for the really long TT of the Bombadil. Jay showed me a Tech
DLX and a Nitto lugged stem in standard dullbright, and also showed me a
raw Nitto lugged stem. He said "we'll paint it for you, no extra charge".
I couldn't pass that up, so I chose the raw one. A couple weeks later I
picked it up and it was WAY too yellow. Jay said, "well, that sucks, let
me try again". The second time around it was close, but a little too red.
I just took it, and nobody seemed to notice. When I sold my Bombadil, the
buyer didn't want the not-matching Nitto lugged stem, and it's been sitting
in the bin. I thought about trying to sell it, but what would anyone pay
for a weird red-orange $220 stem? Besides it has sentimental value.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2017-01-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
At the beginning of this thread I showed my new Rosco Bubbe road bike. I
pointed out that one thing that I consider sub-optimal about it is the
horizontal dropouts, and the lame fender lines forced by horizontal
dropouts. People pointed out that there are plugs that force the wheel
forward in the horizontal dropouts and that you can use a chainring bolt as
a 'free' substitute for those aftermarket plugs.

I've implemented that chainring bolt modification. I found a couple of
alloy chainring bolts from my weight weenie days, and installed those. Now
my wheel is solidly registered against my chainring bolt plugs and sitting
at the front of the horizontal dropouts. That 'fixes' the gap at the front
of the fender. I trimmed the stays to correct the new gap at the rear, and
now I have nice fender line.

Here is a link to the BEFORE
 shot of the big
gap because the wheel was back in the dropout

Here's a close-up of the dropout now plugged with a chainring bolt.
There's on on the other side as well

..and here's the now-better fenderline as a result.

thanks for the tip!

I know about the Spring Thing. I haven't tied one, but I'm 200% convinced it
will rattle, and I would rather have silent fenders in the wrong position than
noisy fenders with perfect lines. As much as I like showing off photos of

The more likely solution that I might pursue is making my own dropout plugs to
push the wheel all the way forward while still allowing reliable and repeatable
wheel installation. That way the fender gap doesn't need to be huge.

If one of you kind and helpful recommenders of the Spring Thing is sure it
won't rattle, please let me know and I will try one. Please be sure though,
because I will likely have to drill out the M5 threads on my kickstand plate to
install this thing.

2016-12-20 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Man, that Roscoe McCarthy is a cool bike like no other. The shade of blue
is spot-on. The head badge iconically retro. The lower horz tube, which
looked weird on the test mule olive color, looks totally natural in the
blue. I've been hauling bikes of all types up to my (thankfully only)
second floor condo. The lower horz tube is a no brainer, as in "why did no
one think of this before?". Well, maybe someone did, but if the cycling
community didn't know about it, the point is moot.

As for the fender issue with horz dropouts (ala my old Bstone and Trek, but
the Trek has adjuster screws), I co-opted someone's idea on iBob from 8-10
years ago for rear fender fit issues. To wit, long carriage bolt through
chain stay, with spring mounted between chain stay and fender - adjust
nut/bolt until fender is equi-distant from tire. I'm sure you're familiar
with that type setup as a few iBob/RBW members have used a similar setup -
otherwise I wouldn't have a clue!

When I need to remove the rear wheel on the Bridgestone, which has SKS
fenders, I just push it forward and the fender moves forward via spring
just enough that I can drop the wheel out "gracefully".

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

Bill,

I was wondering about those BonJonPass tires. How do you like them in
comparison to Barlow Pass? They came out after I bought my Barlow Pass tires

[RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
Haha Rod, I was thinking about writing a short treatise in defense of the
long dropouts. I think a wheel, when installed, should have a 'right'
position. That's the main reason I like vertical dropouts. The weight of
the bike on the axle guarantees the rear wheel registers against the
dropout in exactly the right, repeatable position. With horizontals, you
pull it back until something stops it, or you decide to position it
manually before you lock it into place. With adjustable horizontals you
adjust the stops to the desired position and then wheel installation is
unambiguous. With non-adjustible horizontals like this you get nothing
except pull it all the way back, which is what I've done. It maximizes the
long chainstay effect and I think there it no downside to long chainstays.

But.all the way back in horizontals requires you to make an unsightly
large gap at the front of the rear fender to allow you to get the wheel
out. It's ugly, but I'll get over it:

BIG gap

The key is to be casually deliberate about it. I meant to do that.

In my first few rides on the bike, I'm astonished how silent my drivetrain
has turned out. When I shift, I can't even hear it shift. It's
incredible. I'm now starting to suspect that I'm getting benefits from
having the extremely large chain wrap having the axle way behind the rear
der. It starts to look like the massive chain wrap you see on Cyclo and
Nivex rear ends:

Nivex Example

By wrapping the chain 180 degrees around the cogset, there is no chain
tension at the links that are actually shifting. With some of these 1x
setups, the chain wrap is closer to 90 degrees. So, my working strategy is
to slam the wheel all the way back and call it a modern version of an old
french rear der setup. In other words: APPROVE. The fender issue is
something I can defend.

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
George asked about my S500 brakelevers.

Regular brake levers work well with cantilever brakes. No special adjustability
is required. These levers do have a reach adjust screw, but that's more to tune
them to your hand size, not to change the mechanical advantage. You would
likely need a travel agent or similar device to use these levers with full size
V brakes, but mini v brakes and cantilever brakes work fine with no special
maneuvers

Another question, if I may, now that I'm looking at the finished build:
Those SRAM S500 levers - the manf.'s literature on the Web says their
adjustable for many applications. I assume that they were adjustable
enough to work with the canti's you're using without the need for a travel
agent? They look like very nice brake levers with good ergonomic
qualities.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
George asked: "Did you select this particular model specially for your
commute, to carry it on board the BART trains? "

Short answer: Yes

The longer answer is more nuanced. I really dig the whole Rosco Bubbe
project and the way it allows us to kind of crowd-fund Rivendell's
continuing to explore bike concepts that flat out do not exist anywhere
else in the world. I particularly dig the headbadge and the rocket. My
ultimate custom Rivendell would possibly be a cantilever equipped Roadeo.
The 58cm Rosco Road is exactly that, for about $2700 less, albeit
tig-welded with heavier tubing. The deal killer for me was the horizontal
dropouts. Horizontal dropouts are completely useless unless you want to
convert your geared bike to a single speed. Three of my bikes (including
this Rosco) have horizontal dropouts and I'd change them all to vertical if
I could wave my magic wand.

But then I rode it. It rides like a great road bike. I tested out the
Liftatube and it's perfect for me. I kind of hated the look of the top
tube and head tube extension. The top tube looks "dropped" for no really
good reason. Lifting the bike by the handle gave me a good reason. It
fits! The top tube is right in my arm pit and I've got a great grip on the
liftatube. It's like a tailor measured my sleeve-length and custom built
that liftatube for me.

Still, the combination of the price, the horizontal dropouts and the look
of a cheaper tigged bike still had me on the fence. I had almost the
entire build on-hand. I had sold my low-trail, flexy ('planing') road
frameset, and had a great dynamo road wheelset ready. I almost backed into
a used Ebisu All-Purpose that would have become this build. I lost out on
that one, and decided to build this purpose built every day bike instead.
That made the price more palatable because I was going to buy a used frame
for $1450, but I got this one for $925. It's like I SAVED $500, right? :-)

Anyway, it's going to be an optimal bike for my every day BART + bike
routine. I will experiment with a couple bike camping load configurations
on it, and if I spend as much time riding this summer as I expect to, I
will not rule out putting a pair of Compass Stellacoom 700x38 knobbies on
it and doing some cyclocross races this next fall on it. A Legolas at a
$2000 discount? Maybe

Bill - I noticed from your photo of the Rosco that it's one of the first
frame designs that Grant came up with that has a cross-piece welded in just
above the front derailleur, presumably to facilitate carrying the bike
while walking or running. Did you select this particular model specially
for your commute, to carry it on board the BART trains? Very nice
build-up, BTW, and as others have posted, I like that color, too.

The build is pretty much done now, including fenders, lighting and
tape/twine/shellac.

ALBUM of Rosco

It turned out very nicely. I need to bolt a Dutch Taillight to the rear
fender. I also pre-ordered a big handlebar bag from Ocean Air, the
Docena. When that comes in, I'm going to do a version of a decaleur
utilizing Nitto Accessory Mounts. I should be able to take it out tomorrow
and press it into commuting duty right away.

Haha. That's a good thing! My stable is in a state of flux. Very
recently I've sold 4 bikes, and a 5th is being relocated. That's enabled
me to fire off a few new ones.

Doing builds is one of the very best things I do. If I was forced to
either give up riding or give up doing builds I would probably give up
riding. Fortunately, nobody is forcing me to give up either one.

Oops! I lied about that 110BCD

My double-singlespeed bike is the one that has the 110bcd crankset. This

Ebay as a 52/42. I scrubbed the teeth off the 42 to make a chainguard,
bought the 135bcd 39T tripleizer and the 25T granny from David Banzer

Steve asked about bike security at BART stations

I think you asked because you think I'm going to park my new bike at
BART, which is the opposite of the use-case. People park a bike at
BART for one of two reasons:

1. I drive to BART. BART to destination station. Unlock parked bike
and ride it to work
2. I bike to BART and park my bike. I BART to destination station.
 I walk to work.

Neither of those is my use-case. My use case is: Ride from front
door to BART. BART to Union City Station. Ride to office.

You mean BART lets you take the bike on the train at rush hour? Far cry
from the DC Metro! Off hours only here.

Not that I have all that much experience riding Metro with a bike - did
it maybe 3 times, all tiring: very hard to keep the bike stable just
standing there, even with fairly empty trains. And the first time,
riding into town at 7 pm for a Moonlight Monument ride, trains still
pretty crowded, was really memorable. The guy behind me was ranting to
his girlfriend about how he was going to kill his supervisor at work.
More and more lurid descriptions of blood, dismemberment, knives and
guns -- and all the while I'm there rocking from side to side
desperately trying to keep the bike from bumping into this guy, white
knuckles on the brake lever, lest he go off on me.

To answer your question which does not apply to me, bike security
varies station to station. Some stations have nice lockers you can
pay for. Some have crappy lockers you can pay for. Some have
supervised free bike parking inside the station. Some have nothing
useful. I've never once parked a bike at BART.

My office has nice bike lockers.

That explains a great deal, and I feel much relieved.

The free valet parking at my BART (Fruitvale Station) is excellent.
The BikeLink lockers at West oakland are well used and I've not heard (cue
report of) of a daytime work hours theft.
There is ample before the payment turnstile parking at most. There is sparse
after the turnstile parking at some.

I've only used the valet parking - excellent as I said - and have a BikeLink
card that I'm too scared to test using my Saluki or wife's Betty.

I often put my Saluki in my wife's trunk, carpool from East Oakland (Maxwell
Park) to San Francisco (Western Addition) and then ride home at night to BART
in SF and then ride the 7-20 miles home depending on route and preference. So
that's my "BART Bike."
