May be a good time to revisit Riv - they're apparently covered up in small frames. A deal might be had. If you don't mind the lack of lugs, a mid-90s Trek 850 is a great bike. I'm sure there are other chromoly frames from that era that would work equally well. As others have said, watch for the long top tube, though. You'll most certainly need to replace the stem with something shorter in any case. -- Liz On Sunday, February 2, 2014 8:34:32 PM UTC-5, Lesli Larson wrote: Starting project to build up a new fire trail / off-road bike . Hi Lesli , in our family we have have been very satisfied with old Trek Singletracks, please see pictures; the red one is a 16.5 and the black one is a 18, both are used for daily use as well as loaded touring on/offroad (mostly Swedish and Norwegian gravel roads) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/thih8xxm6jkga1t/bvi-d3Gmp0?m= Living in Denmark would make any Rivendell bike extremely expensive, so we must try and be creative. best regards Soren -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
The ECR is a 29+ bike with 31 diameter wheels. I recommend against an ECR for a short person. I can't suggest a 29+ for someone who normally rides a 48 to 50 cm bike. I'm waiting for my own 29+ bike, a Surly Krampus. I worked with Cycle Monkey for a while on fitting and finally chose the smallest Krampus size, and I'm 5'8. I don't think someone who is much shorter than I am will fit on a 29+ bike; those wheels are huge. As mentioned, top tubes are what will limit your choices. Would a Hillborne work, or is the TT too long? If not, how about a Salsa Vaya? Smaller sizes have 26 wheels and fit 50mm tires. Is the 50cm TT too long? http://pathlesspedaled.com/2012/12/salsa-vaya-1000-mile-review-or-our-thoughts-on-salsa-vaya-vs-surly-lht/ Sound like real great bikes! If you can find one, a used Salsa La Cruz in their 47cm size easily converts to 650B: http://salsacycles.com/files/pages/LaCruz.pdf I've done that and love it, but has a 53cm TT. Thanks so much for the trail bike suggestions to date. I'd love to invest in the Atlantis or Bombadil and that may be the down the line plan. On that front, in the smaller size range, is there really much of a difference between those two models for trail use? I'm well equipped in the areas of rando/go fast so I'm looking for something stout and beautiful. I don't have room in my life for too many bikes so I'd like to look for something interesting from the past as a trial bike. Love the idea of maybe a vintage Trek. I do prefer a rigid front fork and of course something lugged and steel. In the end, I'd rather have something vintage than a new, non Riv bike by Surly. Good point about the long top tube. I think those Trek Singletreks look terrific. Love this list for make/models to cruise via craigslist. I'm hoping that 48 cm vintage frames are not too scarce. I love my two Atlantises. But I don't think an Atlantis is ideal for a trail bike, because it doesn't, quite, accept big tires. I have two Schwalbe Big Bens in my garage, that were supposed to go on my Atlantis. They don't fit. Not sure if it meets your needs but I've got a nice MB-4 in purple... Really small... That need a new home. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/bik/4312290767.html My 5'5 wife can fit our slightly larger MB-5 so this smaller one is ready for a new home. Cheap and has some 'Grant influence'. I hadn't listed it here previously because I didn't think anyone would want to bother shipping on a lower priced frame... but I would ship of anyone wanted it. [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
There are a bunch of very nice lugged steel mountain bikes from the 80's. I've got two early Stumpjumpers and they make great light-duty off road bikes. And it's fairly easy to retrofit modern type shifters stuff if you're inclined. I just stay with period stuff (which there's plenty of) and friction shift to my heart's content. You'll have the same challenges I have, albeit at the other end of the size spectrum (6'3). Miyata ridge runners, peugeot orient express. I'd be quick to second the Bontrager suggestion but most of those US type early bikes (Bontrager, Ritchey, etc) command some fair coin these days. Craigslist, yard sales, maybe ebay. Good hunting! Re: [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
To follow up on Kellie's idea, a used Surly Troll would work. If that is overkill, then look for a used 1980's Fuji mountain bike. My wife had one in a small size in the late 1980's. Fit her very well. A lot of older mountain bikes have longer top tubes. Keep that in mind when looking. [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike
I second the notion of looking out for those long top-tubes. That's the primary reason a vintage MTB won't work well for me. If a Bombadil or Atlantis is what you want and it's financially feasible, I say just go for it. If you have financial constraints you might consider Velo-Orange's Camargue. In your size it will have 26 wheels and it's built as an off-road expedition bike. Imagine a 90's MTB with lower Bottom bracket and a shorter top-tube and you've got the Camargue. I'm seriously contemplating the 700c version. My current bike (Handsome Devil) is a great bike and probably usable within the same parameters as a Sam Hillborne but I REALLY want the option of running full 29'er tires and that's the one place it falls short. I'd look out for a small Bontrager. The collectible ones are the Race and Race Lites. http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc017-carygosset0605.html The more plebeian ones are the Privateers. The '99 Privateer Comps came with Chris King hubs... stock. My Privateer has Midge bars, and I'm still happy with the bike after 14 years. Rode it today. It was great for Oregon's logging roads and singletrack for the 6 years I lived in McMinnville. Fast, good climber, stable descender. It looks (eBay and Craigslist) like you can get a Bonty for ~$4-500. Which is about $100 more than they were going for a couple years ago. For example: http://for-sale.yakaz.com/bontrager-privateer#lo=4docid=0005ps87m5jotl3q Another option would be to rescue one of the $100 commuter bikes on Eugene Craigslist.
