[RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-10-27 Thread J Imler
It’s real, a Bubbe. One day out riding, my boy on his Specialized and me on my
Appaloosa, my six year old asked if he could have a bike like mine and I told
him he could have my bike when he got older. He said, “For free? I’m one lucky
kid.” So cute. Anyhow I told Grant the story and the Bubbe was pulled down from
storage and now a loaner for my boy. We’re spoiled having RBW as our LBS.

Btw, the boy is his fastest yet on the Bubbe.

Oh yeah, that clutch thing is a bugger. I had a SRAM version that had a thingy
you slid over which would hold the pulley cage forward for wheel removal, that
was nifty.

Nice Clem! My L is 1x, too..no Wolftooth but I have a Paul Chainkeeper on it.

2019-10-24 Thread scott minor
Joe, the cranks are old 7410 Dura Ace that I had in the bin. I got a
wolftooth 40T chainring for it, and already loving the combo of that chainring
w a clutch derailleur, especially with that much chain length! The chain runs
smooth and sticks like glue. The stiff spring of the clutch makes taking the
wheel on/off a bit of a struggle, need a strong third arm to hold the rear mech
out of the way.. but hopefully will find a trick for that. Also getting a
very useable chainline w a 107mm BB spindle I already had.
cheers, -scott

The overlapping hearts logo on the side means it is a RuthWorks bag by Ely
Rodriguez. One of his “wedge” seat bags, maybe the Ultralight Large. He’s on
the iBOB list.
Check him out at https://www.ruthworkssf.com

I got an UltraLight Brevet Handlebar bag from him this spring. He is easy to
work with and you can do some customization with in-stock colors and a short
list of useful options. My bag has been adaptable to several bikes, perfect for
necessities on short rides and requires neither rack nor decaleur — It attaches
with nylon straps and elastics.

Yes, a gorgeous Ram!

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-06-29 Thread Erik Wright
Sean & Chris,

I didn't have to dimple the chainstays, but I did have a local builder add
canti posts at 650b height. I will say that the clearances are tight both
at the fork crown and the chainstays, but there's about 3-4mm of space left
in both places. I haven't measured the actual tire width, but I'm guessing
the fact that they're mounted to Velocity Dyads is keeping them from
pumping up to their full 54mm stated width.

Related to wheel diameter, a big concern of mine with this conversion was
dropping the bb too low, especially given my intent of riding off road. I
am getting a bit of pedal strike on rocky trails, but I'm just having to
pay closer attention to my riding technique and not blowing over the
terrain. I used this website to
crunch wheel diameter numbers before I committed. I was running Snoqualmie
Pass tires before, so 700x44 = a wheel diameter of ~710mm. Now with
650x2.1, it's ~690mm.

When I thought about the conversion dropping the bb 2cm lower, I also took
into consideration that the bike likely wasn't designed around a 44mm tire,
and probabaly a 35 or 38mm tire, which has a wheel diameter of ~696mm. So
while it's 2cm lower than where I had it, it's not really much lower than
it *would* be if I had 700x35ish tires.

All in all, these are approximations, and I just went for it. The bike is
very, very cool and I think I'm having the most fun on a bike I've had in a
while. I'm amazed at how fast and fun the ride is. I attribute it to great
frame design and great tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-06-28 Thread Erik Wright
I just finished up a 650b conversion on my Sam Hillborne. My intent was to
squeeze in 2.1" tires for more offroad touring adventures later this summer
when I head West for a couple months. Sure, the bike likely could've
already handled that duty with it's max clearance of 700x45, but heck, I
think this bike is pretty neat. Plus, Paul Motolites afford the opportunity
to swap 700 and 650b wheel sizes. Likely not necessary, but I like options.

I'm fortunate to have some local MTB trails in my office's backyard, so I
ride on pavement ~9 miles to the woods, ride some singletrack for 20-30
minutes, then pop up to the office. This is a great bike to do it.

[RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-06-14 Thread Eric Grim
Greetings! I bought one of Alex Wirth's remaining RBW *Joe Appaloosa*
bikes, the 58cm one. It arrived Wednesday, and I changed a couple of parts
(saddle, tires, pedals; little things just to make it mine). Today I took
it for a few minutes ride, all I had time for, and it was great. It gave
me a permagrin. I would not have thought a 22-inch frame would be near big
enough for me, but with the big tires the fit is very comfortable (such a
short test ride, I know).

That's a Makeshifter Canvas Works *Outback* saddlebag (bought from another
member of this list). Tomorrow the bike'll get a Nitto R10 saddlebag
support rack to help hold it off the tire (that's why the picture shows a
green zip tie holding the bag to the seat post).

I think the butterscotch-colored frame looks good with the brown Brooks
saddle and the brown Little Big Ben tires. At 38mm wide (nominal) the
tires aren't so wide, but they're wider than the tires on any of my other
bikes. Pressure is about five atmos, and they feel really cushy.

I bought an RBW *Atlantis *frame last fall, but have not finished getting
parts to build it up. When Alex Wirth posted notice of the remaining RBW
bikes since the closure of his shop (sad!) I fell in love with the
Appaloosa, especially the fork crown. Sure the Atlantis has a lovely fork
crown, but it's the same as the crown on my Grant-designed Soma San Marcos
(bought from fellow lister Nick). So I already have an example of that
one. Anyway I'll be posting the Atlantis frame "for sale" on this group
soon, FYI (59cm).

I'll take this bike on a longer shakedown ride in a few days, along one of
our local rails-to-trails MUPs. There's one that runs thru Turnbull
Wildlife Refuge, and then the pavement runs out and it's just RR ballast
(very coarse gravel, albeit nice and level). I want to see how the bike
feels on that rough surface. I bet it'll be nice, whereas it's pretty
punishing on narrow tires.

I hope the link to a groogle pics web address works. I looked for a
"sticky" on the best way to post pics to the group, but didn't find it. I
will be pleased to learn a better way if you share it with me.

Cheers, Eric "Limper" Grim (Spokane)

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-06-09 Thread Matt Beecher
Thanks Rich, but I cannot say it was planned. I had the tape, brakes, and
fenders on hand. I do have a variety of Newbaums available, but black seemed
better after I assembled everything.

Although I would have prefered white or cream fenders, it seemed silly to buy a
new set instead of repurposing these.

The bike rides great, so it is a shame that they did not sell well enough to
continue them. Maybe someday, the QB or S1 will return. When I asked a few
months ago, They had no plans for another single-speed. I had already missed
the FJ.

If anyone is thinking about trying a singlespeed, I recommend it, especially if
you live in a relatively flat area like I do.

Cheers,
Matt in Oswego, IL

color (powder coat) and decals by Brad Click of Denver, from whom I
purchased it in Jan., 2015. He did a great job!

I use a Sam for my touring because it is stouter, but this one just feels
so lively under me! I can bomb down steep and chunky gravel roads without a
worry! 38 mm Vittoria Hyper Randooneurs for rubber. I added the older VO
fenders I purchased ages ago when Virginia became the new Seattle! They
keep the drivetrain cleaner!

Lovely color, nice fit-out. Those Toyo frames are well made and a
delight to ride. Just for accuracy sake, the TT is level-ish, but has a
slight upslope. Attached is the geometry from the 2011 RBW handout. Like
you, I prefer a level TT. My 1995 Road is that way, and a 99 Waterford. The
Rambouillet is like your Hilsen. Looks level but slopes up a tad.

Thanks Rich and Bill. It’s a Toyo from the first design when the list price was
$2400 for the frame, fork and headset. It’s a 56 650b that does take Hetres and
fenders with a little work and has the flat top tube that I prefer
aesthetically.

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-05-19 Thread William R.
Patrick: 8-10 lbs sounds about right. I had two large and full water bottles in
it this morning with a couple of pieces of extra clothing, phone, keys and a
little food. I was afraid it would make the steering floppy, but I was
pleasantly surprised. Even riding no hands was not a problem. It felt good.

John: yes, it is a klickflix attachment. Nice and secure.

The bag is a little high and not level with the bar. Maybe an inch and a half
above it. The Klickflix puts the rear of the bag about two inches ahead of the
bar. It all works quite well for me. No problems. Plenty of room to move about
the cabin. I like it!

Nice!

Excuse my ignorance, but how does one attach the handlebar bag? Is it a
klickfix or some such?
(I really liked the Nitto handlebar bag rack that Riv sold to go with the
handlebar bag by Carradice, and later, by Baggins, then sackville, but one
thing I did not like is that it had no easy, quick way to get the bag off the
rack.)

2019-04-29 Thread André Pinter
I can't say what your dollar to value ratio is, but for me I've got no
regrets! I really liked working with Matt and being to pick it up locally.
The rack does the trick quite well and unlike my old rack (a JandD extreme)
it let me mount fenders without doing anything funky like bending/routing
the stays around the rack. It's also got a slick tab on the bottom of the
stays for mounting fenders if your fork only has a bottom set of eyelets.

2019-04-24 Thread Mike Williams
Hey Reid, I gave the builder the forks specs ( of the older Joe App, I
believe V2 has a slightly beefier fork) and he said it was ok.

Jeff, Walt from Waltworks did the mods. Awesome to deal with. $150 total
for front/ rear tabs. I did not have the canti studs removed, also no cable
guides added. This would’ve increased price by a little. I just used the
canti posts/ rack brazeons and some zip ties to keep housing in place. Works
pretty good. I’ll post some pics when I get a chance. To my eye, the
discs don’t seem out of place at all on the Joe and I prefer them for the
rainy/ cold weather. -Mike

Hi Doug,

Sorry, I didn't see your question til just now... that's cool about your
99 riv std... our bikes are like brothers... is there a picture?

I really like the wood rims -- they are 36 hole, and they are built up with
DT revolution spokes, which adds to the overall sensation of springy-ness.
The rims are roughly 400 grams, which makes them equivalent weight-wise to
many box section tubular rims, and lighter than the "aero" flavors... The
only hassle really is that I have to swap out brake pads when switching
wheels -- I use a cork-compound dura-ace brake pad meant for carbon rims
(and wood is basically carbon fiber, right?). On the plus side, when I
brake hard with this setup, I get a nice wood-smoke aroma wafting up...

Have some Billie bars on the way to see if I can get a little less rise,

Kai, you have possibly the coolest bike in the world. I've never liked wood
fenders, but somehow they are perfect on that bike.

2019-04-12 Thread Friend
Thank you Lambbo! Indeed that's the plan. Working with the components I
have, it will have drop bars, no fenders, and likely no racks. Light and
nimble. I'll put the Caradice QR on the seat post that's currently on the
Joe and have some slick 35mm tires on it. The reason I haven't built it up
yet is because I am still sitting on my Trek 520 and having 3 built bikes
is too much room for me right now. Pondering what to do with the Trek.
It's on the local CL, but no bites in a while. And it's also handy for
riding to places where it will be locked up outside for a long time.
Provides peace of mind not caring too much about it!!

Friend! Your appaloosa looks comfortable and capable, not to mention sized
right (or at least not too big for you). So you're also building up your
AHH, is that going to be a go-fast speed demon to balance your sturdy
commuter?
