[RBW] New Bike Day: My Little Platy

Finally. New. Bike. Day.

This bike was a long time coming. I bought the frame in November 
(November!) and have waited this long for the plethora of specialty parts 
to arrive.

Purple is a fun color; it never takes itself too seriously. It goes with 
most other colors, which is what led me to choose…all the colors. 

The theme for this Platypus is: 80s My Little Pony. I call the bike My 
Little Platy. 

The bike is a 50cm Rivendell Platypus with 650b wheels; it can be taken on 
Amtrak and bus racks, which is something its 55cm siblings cannot do. I put 
fat tires on it so it can handle gravel. My Gravel & Travel Platy.

I adored My Little Pony in my girlhood, and my favorite ponies had rainbow 
hair. Why settle for just pink or blue when some ponies had ALL the colors? 
I started out this build incorporating a color here or there. (I had my 
Paul brakes already cerakoted in blues.) But while looking for grips, I 
found Ergon oil slick clamps and had my revelation: I wanted oil slick

All the makers of these parts worked with me to make this bike happen. They

[RBW] New Bike Day and other ride photos for the Road Curious

I built this Romulus over the Winter and have held off taking it on its 
first ride until after I knocked out another few S.M.A.R.T. goals.  I was 
especially eager to ride it because I just pulled together a sweet ILE 
porteur bag setup on a Riv Basket Rack.  Leah's thread that may result in 
her getting a Romulus finally made me take it out, on a ride to the 
dentist, the bakery and the wine shop.  Pics prove it happened.  This is my 
new Ding Ding Album to collect photos that I think Leah may like.  Included 
is my Pink Roadeo in front of some great flowers that I took on my Sunday 
100k.

[RBW] New Bike Day X2

Hello Riv Bunch, 

My first Riv was a 2TT Sam Hilborne that I purchased in 2017. I had an 
Appaloosa that I sold just over a year ago. I've regretted selling my Joe 
ever since. I even saw my old 2TT silver Appaloosa at this years Nutmeg 
Nor'Easter. I thought about offering to buy it back but I never did ask the 
new owner. I doubt he would have sold it back to me anyway. The only 
consolation is that the new owner told me that he loves the bike and rides 
it nearly every day. 

While at the NNE I saw so many cool Riv's. I was talking to fellow Riv 
Bunch member Justin Kennedy about his Platypus. My UBU (unresonable bike 
urge) has been in high gear ever since. 

I will soon become a proud Man on a Mixte and my 60cm Sergio Green complete 
will be on the way to me very soon. I'm going to change the bars right away 
to Billie's and will build a nicer wheelset with a Dyno hub before getting 
it on the road. I figured if Leah can own 3 Platypus's its got to be a good 
bike! I'm exciting for it's arrival and can't wait to ride it. 

The second inbound Riv is a A. Homer Hilsen frameset. I'm going to build 
the Homer up as a drop bar road bike keeping it rackless and light as 
possible. I am thinking about building it as a retro mod with downtube 
shifter and some older parts. I still need to decide on that. Anyway I 
thought I'd share the exciting news with fellow bike nerds. The Sam, Platy 
and AHH will give me a nice collection.  I am feeling very fortunate to be 
able to add two new bikes to my collection. N+2!

[RBW] New Bike Day - 2002 Size 60 Rambouillet

I haven't had a proper Riv for about 5 years and had been itching for a 
simple, rackless bike to take out on mid-day rides with no destination in 
mind. I picked this up from a seller on Pinkbike. Aside from the 
wheels/drivetrain, I've switched up everything else about the build. I 
especially like the aesthetic of the lugged stem/seatpost with the lugs of 
the frame, so many lugs! Frame has the expected paint rubs and an 
unexpected small dent in the top tube, but hey, beausage! Now I don't have 
to be so precious with it. I'm very curious how it will ride compared with 
my 650b Rando Fitz. 

It's currently kitted out with 48 Noodles, but may switch to Mustache which 
I'm finding I like more and more. I've got 35mm Bon Jon Pass tires in there 
now with very little fender room to spare. I may go with 32mm tires and 
fender it up for the winter and put 35s back on for the summer. I think the 
wheels are stock Dura Ace 9sp era hubs. The TA cranks are gorgeous, though 
I'll likely switch them out for WI Road Cranks. I also haven't used DT 
shifters in at least 10 years, so am excited to try out the Silver Shifters 
on here.

My ultimate plan is to build up a 700c SS wheelset with WI ENO Eccentric

Riding with another Platypus in our Michigan Riv Rides will thrill me TO NO END. I’m SO glad you got your mermaid Platy. I am on the bottom end of the 55, so I bet mine fits the same as your 60 does for you. I love it and would never want to size down. So excited to hear all about your rides and how you like your first Rivendell. And very wise to have your other step thrus, too. Thompson seat post and Specialized body Geometry saddle from 90's. Alfine single ring crankset. Wheels are pretty nice, DT Swiss 240s hubs and not sure which DT Swiss rims. Fenders are Bontrager meant for 26" tires, but fit well. Planning on front rack that will tame the quick handling a bit, but worth the utility. Tom PalmerTwin Lake, MI

Tom, my Clem came with a 135mm FacePlater stem & Bosco bars. I was absolutely 
convinced it would be way to long & the first thing to get changed. It is now 
one of my favorite things about the fit & the ride. I just love how roomy the 
cockpit is and how that contributes to the “in the bike” feeling you describe.

The stem is longer than I anticipated with Albatross bars and such long 
reach- 90mm stem. I emailed Will at Riv and he was confident it would fit. 
I did another ride yesterday and really gelling with the bike. I feel 
really "in" the bike, which is primary directive for all of my bikes. 
Handles so well and yet comfy as a Cadillac.

Thanks!  I think the real deep philosophical question is: can I call it a 
tourer before it's been taken touring?  How long of a tour counts as 
touring?  From a pure 'naming' or 'categorization' perspective, there is 
such a thing as a touring bike.  That generally accepted "touring bike" is 
a touring bike even before it goes on a tour, even if it never goes on a 
tour.  So, for a bike that is not universally categorized as a touring 
bike; does it become a touring bike because it is taken touring?

 which I also had on-hand on the chainring board.  I have a 16/18 freewheel 
 on the way, and then I'll convert it to an 8-speed singlespeed, with gears 
 ranging from 43 to 69 inches.  

 There's another order in the works to make this 'Beam even weirder, but 
 that project is a few weeks out.  We'll see if this build concept makes 
 its 
 way onto a Roaduno.

The build concept was a single speed tourer.  Whether or not you can 
imagine using it in a particularly steep hilly area is not part of the 
challenge.  Tour on it someplace where the gearing is sufficient :)  

My target is an overnight visit to UC Santa Cruz this September, where my 
daughter is a student.  By sleeping on her floor, I don't have to carry a 
tent.  By starting and finishing near civilization I don't have to carry 
much food, or a stove.  More like an S24O, I guess. 

The rear rack is the Nitto 27R, which has detachable lowriders, which are 
large and rectangular.  The Carradice panniers pictured on there are made 
for that large rectangular lowrider attachment.  You aren't supposed to 
hang a pannier on the "short lower rail" you see when the lowrider is not 
attached.  Detach the lowriders when you don't want to run panniers.  Bolt 
the lowriders on when you do want to run panniers.

[RBW] New Bike Day (last week) A New to me Quickbeam

A while back I posted a WTB for a 58cm Quickbeam.  I finally found a 
frameset/wheelset on a trade.  It had all been ridden pretty hard as a 
commuter, and that pre-installed beausage kind of liberated me from some of 
the usual perfectionist tendencies that I have with my builds.  

A thread over on iBob showed off a ~$3000 Pro's Closet listing of a Vanilla 
branded "single speed tourer", and one of the responders suggested that we 
should have a build-off: build the nicest single speed tourer you can for 
the minimum amount of money.  

In response to that challenge I threw together a one-day build using 
entirely stuff laying around in my parts collection.  Particularly 
iconoclastic details include a gold anodized Nitto Pearl 11 stem, a heavily 
modified brakeset, and handlebar tape entirely fashioned from remnants.

It's actually a 6-speed single speed.  In the album, there are 35/38 
chainrings, a 20/22 Dos/ENO freewheel on one side and a 17T fixed cog on 
the other.  I did some calculations targeted at utilizing the generously 
long Quickbeam dropouts, and decided I can get away with 40/34 chainrings, 
which I also had on-hand on the chainring board.  I have a 16/18 freewheel 
on the way, and then I'll convert it to an 8-speed singlespeed, with gears 
ranging from 43 to 69 inches.  

There's another order in the works to make this 'Beam even weirder, but 
that project is a few weeks out.  We'll see if this build concept makes its 
way onto a Roaduno.

I, too, am a big fan of low BB drops.  Riv introduced it to me and it’s one of 
the first dimensions I look at when I look at a bike’s geometry chart.  I love 
the feeling of riding “in” a bike instead of riding “on top” of one (if that 
makes any sense.)

hello fellow riv fans. i got a new riv on saturday and built it up on 
sunday (yesterday). i rode it to work this morning & it's real nice! 

Highlights include:
Compass 700x55 antelope hills (really amazing)
Paul v brakes & levers
Son dynamo hub & light
Velocity cliffhanger rims
Deerhead shifters
XT derailment worldwide

This bike received the créme of the crop parts list from my Hunqapillar 
(recently sold to a lister).

I stole the fillet brazed nitto bullmoose bars from my Cheviot but will 
likely put them back - this bike has +5cm ETT on the Cheviot, & I am not 
sure which way to go for bars yet.

I'll echo Justin's experience. No flats since putting Stan's in my tubes. I 
have used Schwalbe Thunder Burts Lightskin and Compass RTP's. This includes 
a ~280mi, mostly forest road camping trip a couple weeks ago. I will say 
that it has clogged a valve core which made pumping with an HP-X kind of a 
pain, but not impossible. I think it's worth it if all I have to replace is 
valve cores every two months or so.

I've only had one puncture (it sealed) where I could hear air escaping but 
maybe there have been other would be flats, too.

I've bottomed out the tire when riding tubeless on my Chameleon on the 
trails and nothing popped as there was nothing to pop.
Tubeless is great.

I've yet to puncture the tire and have to seal ..

Since adding tubeless sealant to my tunes I have had zero flats. Off road, rock 
gardens, on road, East Oakland streets, nothing. On a ride this weekend 
someone’s rear tire went low and he just pumped it back up to pressure and it 
held just fine. Very little hassle. A single anecdote does not data make nor is 
the plural of anecdotes data.

Yes, for every "my garage is covered in latex!" story, there's a few happy 
stories that often go untold. That said, I wouldn't go tubeless with pizza 
cutter tires, but with your clearances that's not likely to be a consideration.

I disagree, my Crust has tubeless with Orange Seal. A few weeks ago the rear 
generated the dreaded 'air escaping' sound for 5 seconds, then stopped and on I 
went. I put a little more air in when I got home and that was it. Tubeless 
rocks.

Rusty, I was in much the same boat as you, so I tried Orange Sealant in my 
tubes (not going full boar tubeless) to get an idea of the effectiveness of the 
flat protection. I still flatted, and had a whole lotta mess to deal with. My 
conclusion for me is that the fussiness of sealant exceeds the fussiness of any 
benifit I experienced.

“Tubeless”, has just been one of those things buzzing around the outer edges of 
the biking part of my brain.  I just don’t know enough about it, to know if I’d 
like to try it.  One reason for that may be that I’ve always run the nearly 
flat proof Schwalbe Marathons on the Hillborne.   I’ll have to pay more 
attention to that buzzing…

Will gave you good advice, the cliffhangers are fantastic, so very tough. Are 
you going/have you gone tubeless? I have some cliffhangers set up tubeless with 
60mm Schwalbe Big Ones (liteskin, not "tubeless easy" but mount readily with 
the cliffhangers). Flats are over, and speed and comfort are phenomenal.

I know the intended use of the BMC is different than your Sam, but I’d love

A BMC Monster Cross with some Barlow Pass EL o light wheels would make 
a splendid road bike. Put some racks and fenders on it and now it’s a touring 
bike. It’s a very capable and very versatile bike.

green is so loud, obnoxious and awesome it makes we trade up. Great build, 

I had 50's on mine but they were a tad big for the riding I was doing and

I'm going to regret this, but for sale is a Waterford built 2006 A. Homer 

Hilsen that I have owned it since 2010. When I bought the bike, I thought 

I'd own it for the rest of my life, but it turns out that it just doesn't 

fit the type of riding I'm doing as well as I thought it would. It is one 

of the more beautiful frames I've ever put my eyes on and when I purchased 

it I painstakingly cleaned the frame and carefully touched up all the chips 

with matching enamel paint (first sign that I'm not a true "Riv guy"). 

 

The paint is darker blue than the current Homer and anyone that is paying 

attention knows that the AHH has gone through a lot of hues of blue over 

the years. I was also missing the brifter index shifting from my sportier 

road bike, so Homer's bar end shifters got swapped for a full Shimano 

Ultegra 6500 triple groupset (second sign that I'm not a true Riv believer) 

which I believe to be the last classically beautiful group that Shimano 

produced. I don't need to go into how great these frames are and how well 

they handle, or how beautiful they are, but I will say that the size 59 

frame was on the verge of being too big for my 5'11" frame, but it was

Aha, by ‘brake placement’ , John W meant ‘shift lever placement’. 

I placed them as wide as the 31.8mm section of the Salsa Cowchipper bars would 
allow. I chose the Salsa Cowchipper bars because the 31.8mm sleeve is quite 
wide. I decided against normal bar-con placement because they are flared drops 
and didn’t want them sticking out. 

If I find that I want to do a lot of mountain biking, I might want to switch to 
a clutch rear der to mitigate chain slap. If I do that, I may switch to a SRAM 
10-sp Brifter on the right hand side.

I installed the cantilever brakes DIRECTLY onto the cantilever brake posts. . 
Maybe you meant something else?  Brake lever placement was an educated guess 
based on the assumption that 100% of off road downhill braking will be done 
from the drops. 

As others noted, when CX70s went out of production I took note. I stocked up

Jonathan D asked where I place this bike in my lineup

Second hook from the right. 

Jonathan D asked for me to compare the ride vs Rivs and my Black Mountain Road. 

I only buy framesets that fit me. I know the numbers well enough and myself 
well enough that I can always grab something that fits. I’ve done a LOT of 
builds for myself over the last decade and it’s gotten a little boring that I 
do a build, get on the bike for a first ride and it’s “yep, perfect again”. 
Anyhow this is a perfect fitting bike for rides that I feel like doing on a 
full rigid drop bar mountain bike. My Black Mountain Road is a perfect fitting 
bike for rides I feel like doing on a stripped down road racing bike. My Rivs 
each have their little “mood niche” as well. My Hillborne is set up to be my 
brevet bike. My two Rosco Bubbes are set up to be Bart bikes. They all fit 
perfectly and all ride well and I choose one based on mood. I don’t think of my 
stable in terms of ‘better’ or ‘worse’, and for as much as I know about bikes, 
I’m not as sensitive as the trail zealots or the planing zealots. I expect that 
may not be a satisfying answer.

This Boxcar Stem is tons stiffer than any hanger. That’s for sure. A good 
hanger like a Paul Funky Monkey is much nicer than low end hangers. I did it

Any noticeable diffs in braking with stem drilled vs. headset hanger vs. fork 
crown hanger? I don’t like the looks of hangers, but too chicken to drill a

front derailer and brakes from Riv.  The whole idea of a Monster Cross, or

Rosco Bubbe is down in the books as bike #7 in my 200 miles on 10 bikes 
challenge.  The Medium Mountain Step Thru went out with a bang, on a 
classic Riv-content ride.  Out my front door, to the top of Mount Diablo 
and back to my front door.  




78 miles and 6700 feet of climbing on a practically perfect day in the Bay 
Area.  We're looking West from the summit and that bump on the horizon is 
Mount Tam.  The bike did spectacularly well.  I've continued to dial in 
this bike, now with a Black Brooks B17 and a Mountain Campee front rack 
with detachable lowriders.

Thanks for posting the graphic, Philip. You did a nice job. I remember 
running across that catalog page years ago, and tried with no success to 
find it during the most recent mixte discussion. I am of the opinion that 
mixte in this sense  does not mean co-ed, but "dual" or "mixed" as in the 
twin top tubes and/or the dual seat stays. Because otherwise why wouldn't 
all the other styles be co-ed as well?  But I am decidedly a derailleur guy.

result of the tire swaps left me with a pair of Compass Babyshoe Pass 
Extralights that could go in the tire box, or could go on another bike.  
So, I decided to deck out my Medium Step-Thru as a stripped down road 
racing machine.

rack, we'll be totally Rando-Ready.  

On my 10x200 challenge, I've been doing shorter rides including all-out 
effort intervals.  I'm tracking my progress/fitness by shooting for 
Personal Records on all my frequent East Bay Climbs.  Today, I went all-out 
for a PR on the climb up Wildcat Canyon.  I felt very good about it, only 
to find I accidentally hit the "stop" button on Strava and failed to record 
any of my 35 mile jaunt.  We'll never know whether I did a PR or not.  Did 
it really happen?  Is Strava equivalent to Pictures?  

As it stands, I'm still at 6 bikes.  I should be able to finish up 200 
miles on both my Mountain bike as well as the step-thru this week.  That 
will leave my double-speed Gunnar and my Rosco Road bike as bike number 9 
and 10.  I'm about ready to concede that there is no way I'm getting 200 
miles in on my tandem.  There is just not enough willing stokerage going on 
in my immediate vicinity. I'm OK with that.

I was convinced that I was going to have the bike repainted. I decided to not 
do so. Mainly due to the fact that I have a Roadini coming next that I am 
definitely going to have repainted. Decided to not put the extra money into the

Harsh directional light doesn't flatter that color much, bit in foggy 
conditions out in the wild it looks great.
I think this might be a concept/category that Rivendell could exploit with good 
success  in the near future! At least until it gets copied. This looks kinda 
like what I was hoping my Clementine would be.

Haibike makes hi-step and low-step versions of their ebikes, which correlate 
well to the H and L designations Riv uses for the Clem. This seems a much 
simpler descriptor than trying to explain when a step-through is not a mixte 
and vice-versa.

Btw, the BLUG announced that RBW would be closed for a bit for "the 
occultation". Nice work, Bill!

Mark explained he was not referring to the name Medium Mountain Mixte that I 
used in the subject line of this thread, but was referring to Rivendell's 
referential use of the term Mixte when describing a non-Mixte design

I think I understand better now.  Thanks. Why would somebody who knows better 
deliberately use the wrong term to describe something?  Is it marketing?  Is it 
sloppiness?  Did they forget?  

If I had to guess I would say it was just convenient communication. Last month 
the path of the moon was just right that observers on earth could see it block 
out the sun. Almost everybody referred to that event as an eclipse, even though 
everyone who knows better knew full well that it was not an eclipse but an 
occultation. When you said "the eclipse" people knew what you were talking 
about, and little harm was done by using the incorrect term. 

These eclipse/occultation/Mixte minutiae are fresh in my mind because last 
month Grant used the term 'eclipse' in a post and I called him on it, just for 
fun. When I went to pick up my frame, Grant called me on using the name Medium 
Mountain Mixte, also just for fun. That's the irony, that we're speculating why 
Grant would use the wrong term when it was Grant correcting me for using the 
wrong term. 

Part of language is just trying to convey an idea efficiently. The speaker is 
guessing at what words to use to get the job done. I've used the term 
'step-through' for decades working at bike shops and usually when speaking and 
with the bike present I still use the term step-through along with a little 
pantomime motion towards the dropped top tube.  

If Rivendell sometimes used the term Mixte to describe a non Mixte design, I 
trust it was just to briefly point out that the thing had that step through 
feature.  A Facebook post, a BLUG post is an environment where writers might 
get a little loose with descriptive terms. When it comes to actual NAMING of 
objects, like frame decals or a product brochure I think it's right to expect 
more precision.

Conversely, the Clem L has a more elegant, "dutch bike" look IMO. Which is a 
pleasant surprise for me: I've always liked Rivs and always liked step-through 
omafiets..I never thought I'd see the two converge.

Thanks, Jeremy, that answers my question. I suspected it probably had a 
shorter tt since it was not designed specifically for the Bosco bar. I 
think the look of the Rosco M is a bit more rugged/masculine than the Clem 
L.
