This morning I finished detailing the Hunqapillar.

Changes made after riding it for a week:
 - Changed to a 13cm stem.
 - Changed brake levers to Paul's polished reverse brake levers. They work
much better than the Tektros and don't have that squishy feeling.
 - Changed to a green Brooks B17 I had lying around, and used Brooks green
 leather tape.

This bike has an amazing ride, especially with some weight on the front
 panniers.

I spent a long time deciding on the color scheme, particularly debating
between pewter and silver. Pewter ultimately won and I'm so glad I chose it.

Rick Stefani at DD did the paint job. He's local and Keven sent me
there. He paints a lot of the Rivendell frames.

I do like the downtube shifters but after I fine tune the fit of the 55
Bosco on the 120mm Tallux stem, I'll see if there is space for the shifters
on the stem's quill. I have them like that on the Betty and love them. They
didn't fit with the Bullmoose Bosco, but they may fit on the regular.

The reverse levers are great, but the Tektro 4.1 seem provide a braking
feel that is too flexy. On the Betty, with the front Paul Racer and the
rear Silver, they cannot lock the wheels on a steep downhill. The braking
seems to be a bit better on the Hunqapillar with the Neo-Retro/Touring
brakes, but I ordered a set of Paul's reverse brake levers that can be
configured to work both with long and short pull brakes. I have a strong
feeling, from the time I tried their regular levers, that they'll be much
better than the Tektros. The Tektros work well on flat commutes and regular
street riding, but I want to make sure I have brakes when I need them, and
not that I'll be pressing the levers like crazy while my tires slow and
 then stop... or don't.

 Hi all,

After spending all weekend in the delicious task of rebuilding my newly

 minute of it.

 Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/

Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything
around the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset
moment in the garden outside the Rodin museum.

I did several updates to this build:
 - Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with
a 172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to
handle the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been
doing fine with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the
Low Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is
working... The 24 will definitely help me in the climbs, at least until I
lose significant weight, and for the same reason, the 38 may be a bit more
friendly on the flats, especially when riding loaded or on a headwind.

 - Went with the 55cm steel Bosco handlebar instead of the previous 58cm
Bullmoose Bosco. While the Bullmoose is awesome and very stiff, after
riding it for a while before the repaint, it seemed a bit too wide. Riding
the much narrower GB Promenade handlebar on the Betty has made me realize I
prefer narrower handlebars than what I used to ride. While the Promenade
may be too narrow for the Hunqapillar, especially off-road, the 55cm Bosco
seems like a perfect middle ground. I've also noticed than as I've started
riding narrower handlebars, my shoulder and neck pain have also
significantly improved. Even when riding the GB Randonneur bars on the
Atlantis with their more forward position. Another improvement I chose is
to use reverse brake levers in order to get the full smooth sections of the
Bosco bar while improving the hand positions that still allow me access to
the brakes. I currently have a set of Tektro 4.1 reverse levers, but will
try a set of Paul's reverse brake levers as they provide more versatility.
The Tektro reverse brake levers also seem to provide a very flexy braking
experience, so I want to see if the Pauls work better.

I tested it out w/ my Bombadil's wheels first, so all I had to do was swap

[RBW] Re: How I made a quick release basket that can be installed and removed in seconds, or even one handed.

2013-03-31 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Slick, indeed... but I would be slightly concerned about lateral stability,
particularly when carrying a load that is heavily weighted to one side...
do the connectors front and rear have enough strength to keep the basket
from 'rolling' left or right without putting undue strain on those
connectors? Lateral stability seems to be the weak point for a wide basket
on any narrow rack; not so much front/rear stability. I wonder if you
could use the front tongue idea (brilliant), by simply having one face left
and one right, and installing it in kind of a twisting motion to clamp
under the sides of the rack. You don't really need the forward/rear
stability (because the length of the rack already stabilizes the basket
front to back), but now you'd have excellent left to right stability.

Thanks for sharing this; I may try that idea... I'm sure I'd struggle
getting the 'cam over clasp' properly positioned.

[RBW] Easter Morning Ride

2013-03-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
Since my brain prevents me from attending Mass, I headed to the Highland
Cathedral on my Hunqapillar. I left in the early pre dawn, getting amazing
views of Ute Pass under iridescent purple sky with the near full moon over
Pikes Peak. Then came the alpine glow on the peak, which I caught the end of in
a photo. Hoarfrost was forming out of thin air under the windless clear skies.
What a grand way to spend four hours while my family was at Mass!

[RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b

2013-03-31 Thread BenG
Hi, Hugh. When my 1972 Sports Tourer started breaking spokes, Rich Lesnik
built new 700C wheels with Synergy rims on my original hubs, which look
like the Phil 'Rivy' hubs. Thus it needed no frame spacing change in the
rear; and the O/C rear wheel improved the strength of the 120mm-spaced rear
wheel. It's been all good since! I kept the original center-pull brakes
by extending the shoe slots with an endmill to gain the 4mm or so of
adjustment required. That's not a recommendation!! A brake with more
reach would have been the safe approach.
I looked over my '90 Bstone MB-1 with XT cantilevers, and if yours are
similar, the brake shoe post will have to angle downward to contact a
smaller wheel's rim, because there is no adjustment for rim diameter. I
don't like the prospects - some of your braking force will be lost to a
bending moment applied to the shoe's post, and the angled shoe will have
more chance for tire contact. Those are old brakes, and mine are old eyes.
Maybe the adjustment you need exists in a modern brake, or maybe I just
didn't see it. So take a good look at yours!
Ben

I have a Brooks B17 in the same green, but unfortunately, after you've
been riding it for a while, the green starts to wear off and show the
black underneath at the wear points where your sit bones go and where
your legs rub each side. Same with a couple of grey Brooks that I have
on other bikes - the black is starting to show through. The only Brooks
saddles I've owned that retain their original colour with long use are
in either honey, brown, or black. The other colours seem to be a finish
applied on top of a black saddle.

They work much better than the Tektros and don't have that squishy

- Changed to a green Brooks B17 I had lying around, and used
Brooks green leather tape.

This bike has an amazing ride, especially with some weight on the

 Hi all,

After spending all weekend in the delicious task of rebuilding my newly
painted Hunqapillar with its low trail fork, I'm happy to report that I'm
mostly done and share the photos that proved I worked hard and loved every
 minute of it.

 Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/

Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything around
the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset moment
in the garden outside the Rodin museum.

I did several updates to this build:
 - Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with a
172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to handle
the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been doing fine
with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the Low
Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is

 - After much thought, I decided to not mount the Pass Stow rack that I
had before and instead, mount the Nitto Mini + Tubus Nova that I first used
on my Bombadil. I'm still keeping the Pass Stow rack and may install it
again, but I didn't like the Porteur bags so much and will try using front
 panniers instead.

 - Decided to try a pair of 50mm Schwalbe Big Ben tires, and I have to say
I'm quite impressed. They roll very nicely, and on the dirt and rough
pavement provide a definite cushy ride. Did I say I'm quite impressed?

 - Still pending is the taping of the handlebars. I'd like to experiment
with the full leather sewn-on bar cover that Velo Orange sells, but may
also end up using Brooks leather tape or the super cushy Cinnelli gel-cork
tape I'm using on the Atlantis. I really like it. I'll probably end up
taping the handle bars next weekend, once I'm sure everything on the
cockpit is the way I want it.

Happy riding and planning an S240 soon, since I couldn't make it the last
 one organized through this list.

 René

What? Someone without Luke Skywalker's binoculars? You must be the last
one! Grin. I realized I forgot to add the worlds iPhone app to the
description, so it reads like this now:

Since roads always look flat in photos, I used my Theodolite app on my
iPhone to measure this road at 7˚ incline. or a 12% grade if my math is
correct. The road gets steeper for a few switchbacks just round the bend.
This is Rampart Range Road, N out of Woodland Park.

So, if you have a smart phone, for a few bucks more you to can have Luke
Skywalker's binos. I actually got it as an attempt to help me visually
learn to recognize vertical and the horizon again despite the protestations
of my vertigo. It hasn't worked yet as I still take crooked pictures almost
all the time, but it makes a nifty way to measure the angles of things.

Nice shots! Looked like a chilly, but fun ride.

 If you don't mind,

I have a couple newbie-to-Albatross bars questions in case I switch to them
one day:

 1. No cut out on your saddle, but I see it is very tilted - nose up. I
take it it works well with the ablatrii bars since one sits more upright
 with them?

2. How does sitting upright without a sprung saddle feel? Not too much road
bumpiness on the unsprung saddle? Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Easter Morning Ride

2013-03-31 Thread Deacon Patrick
No'a'tall, Michael. Happy to answer any questions. That's the beauty of
this gangly bunch! Grin.

The ride started out at 25 at my house, likely dropped to 15 at the high
point and was 45 at home when I got back. It's a fun thing to arrive at the
bottom of a long mountain descent far warmer than you started out.

Saddle tilt: I don't know this is the bars. I think it has a lot more to do
with hip rotation. I run and ride with my hips open (which essentially
means rocking the top of your hips back and the bottom of your hip forward,
or tucking in your rear). With the seat more level, I slide forward too
much and bits get un comfortable and go numb. I don't like that. We floor
live (no chairs or bed), which leads to a strong core and limber, lithe
bodies as well as moving differently than most people are accustomed to. So
I suspect the saddle tilt is the result of that. I've never ridden a
cut-out saddle, so I can't compare them.

Road Bumpiness: I have constant vertigo from brain injury so avoided the
sprung saddle because I was looking for a stable platform to maximize
proprioceptive feedback. So I can't compare. But I love the saddle and I've
ridden several hundred miles of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail
(Central CO to the NM border), which had some rocky bits. What I learned on
that trip was that Grant is right: we have the best shock absorbers in our
knees and elbows. I floated along standing (squatting, really) on my
peddles with knees and elbows bent while my bike bounced away beneath me
and the descents on rough road were marvelous. Climbing rough roads is
great, generally too slow to matter much, though climbing heavy washboard
is no fun.

Hopefully somewhere in that rambling is something helpful.

With abandon,
Patrick

2013-03-31 Thread Earl Grey
Sweet! You can even lock it if you want to. :) I don't quite understand the
angled basket to keep the cam tensioned. Wouldn't serious weight in the
basket push the basket all the way down to flat, which would then reduce
tension on the clasp just as you need it most? What am I missing?

 Hi folks,

A while back I asked the groups opinion of the public bikes basket and
it's quick release. The opinions I got back were negative and got me
thinking on how to adapt a basket that could be installed and removed
easily but be very secure. I live without a car and use my Atlantis for
groceries etc. I didn't want to haul around an empty basket all the time,
or deal with zip ties constantly taking the basket off and zip tying it
down the next time I needed it to go to the store. So my requirements were:
Instant on/off, secure, elegant, lockable to the bike and not too heavy.
All was achieved but the elegance. Not ugly, but I need to paint the silver
 bits...lol.

I run panniers and a rear rack regularly. The basket is used as an
additional overload for *planned* shopping trips.

Check out the photos and descriptions. I tried to be clear as I could so
you could make your own if you so desired. Progress through the photos from
old to new. It should make sense after you get through the series of ten
 photos and the descriptions.

[RBW] New Riv Weekend!

2013-03-31 Thread Brencho
Hi folks,

For a long time now, I've been reading these pages and also saving up for
my first rivendell. I've learned so much over the years from the riv
readers and from conversations with those fine folks that it hardly felt
like a choice! After a worthwhile wait, I picked up my Atlantis on Friday.
It's a 58 cm frame, ready for anything. I recently moved to the bay area
and didn't bring my car, so this bike is ready for my (very pleasant 15
mile) commute, heavy loads of anything (groceries etc), and lots of fun
weekend rides and camping trips to get to know the area (and some longer
west coast rides over the summers). I've been reading/lurking on here for
so long that I felt compelled to share my excitement/enthusiasm and post a
picture of my bike as yet another example of the myriad ways you can set up
a rivendell! Thanks to all the fine folks at rivendell for being so good at
what they do.

Big week for me and the bike, as I finally took the studded tires off on

ala Jared in one of the new Bikes of the Month at Rivendell.

The main thing I've noticed is - nothing. Can't really tell if the second
top tubes adds anything or not. If so, it too subtle for me to notice. At
least yet. The 60cm frame definitely fits me better than the old 56.
That's probably a bigger difference than any extra tube. The fancier lugs
are really nice. As is the present paint scheme. Very detailed for an
inexpensive Rivendell. Still getting used to sidepull brakes. This is the
first bike I've had since high school with these things. They're working
fine even wet and with all the puddles I went through today they were
 plenty wet.

Do have the Marathon Racers on the bike now. Will be swapping out to Baby
Big Bens in the real near future. In part because the Racers are getting
worn. At least for me, they wear down faster than other Schwalbe tires.
Personally like them more than the Marathon Supremes.

ready to go for anything! I especially like the racks set up for touring
but at the moment set to commute and grocery runs. Enjoy that beauty in
good health.

Thanks to all the fine folks at rivendell for being so good
 at what they do.

I think the heading says it all. I've been getting impatient with Acorn

they don't want anymore? I'm thinking a little worn will add character like
buying faded jeans with out all the effort.

[RBW] New (to me) Betty for the wife

2013-03-31 Thread PeterG
Drove down to Riv. on Saturday from Reno to pick up the wife's Betty
Foy...I took along my Sam Hillborne...The Saturday crew was great as usual
and even helped me with a shifter problem I was having (self imposed) while
we waited for the Betty...This is my third Rivendell for the family and we
couldn't be happier! I now have what I consider the perfect pair...a Homer
and a Sam. The Homer is set up as my go fast bike with drops, no racks or
extras. The Sam is set up as my wanderer. It has racks, bags, bells, 47cm
tires, Bosco's and sometimes even a doggie basket up front. My wife is
lovin her 58 Betty and we can't wait for biking picnics and riding along
the river in Reno. Thanks again to Joe, Sean, Harry, Will and especially
Kevin for all the continued advice and help.PeterG

[RBW] New Riv Weekend!

2013-03-31 Thread Pondero
That is a wonderful bicycle. I have often thought that maybe everyone needs an
Atlantis with Albatross bars. Since I don't have one yet, my wife is the only
one I need to convince.
