[RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread E Lee
I recently picked up the Thule Apex 4. Pricey but so far I have no
complaints. It has a knob to tighten a wedge in the receiver. fits 1-1/4"
or 2" by way of a bolt on adapter.
The LBS also has the Thule double track pro. They are great looking racks,
and seem to be reasonably priced.

I highly recommend 1UP. 100% MUSA. They sell adapters to work with fenders.
I also really like it because it's easy to take on and off. I usually leave
mine in the back of my car and only put it on the hitch when i'm going on a
bike ride, it's that easy.

[RBW] Re: How much drop from the bar can I get out of a Berthoud decaleur?

2017-08-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Ron. I've been curious about an aspect of decaleur use and this is
perfect time to ask.

I use Acorn front bags with the stabilizer straps that came with it, looped
around my drop handlebars below the brake hoods. When the lid is closed,
the top is laying over the bag's opening and the rearward flap slips down
behind the bag and I fasten the elastic band to the hook on the bag. In
your picture and in many other pictures I've seen of decaleurs installed,
the 2 bars going from the stem to the bag occupy the same space as the lid
flap does when it's closed.

How do you handle this---do you always leave your lid unfastened and never
loop it in?

OK, great, Thanks, y'all. Looks like I can get plenty of drop. Nice!

Once I get the Tallux/Bosco mounted, I will measure how much length I will
need and order.

*Only question is ...where to order from???*

Seems like I cannot find a retailer with the horizontal versions in stock
online for the 121 or 91, which I am sure I will need.

I've used (and sell) Swagman racks. They worked well enough. I just got a

+1 for the 1UP. If you get the single one (which can have another one or
two added for a total of 3), you don't even need to open it to get to the
rear door if you have an SUV. Must be the same with a car, but haven't
tested it. I leave mine on permanently and folded; no interference on my
Highlander.

[RBW] Silver crankset not 10 speed friendly?

'm using an 8 speed Logic with 10 cogs and 10 sp chain and it all shifts
perfectly. I've used ancient Pro 5 Vis cranks with 9 cogs and I wouldn't

work with 10 sp chain. Why does Rivendell say that?

Re: [RBW] Re: How much drop from the bar can I get out of a Berthoud decaleur?

2017-08-15 Thread René Sterental
I've gotten them in the past from:
- Ben's Cycles
- http://www.boulderbicycle.bike
- The Touring Store

Sometimes, based on availability, you have to order the correct length but
a different version and then separately, order the adapter to convert it to
yours. Boulder has that configuration in the 121mm, I believe.

If, by any chance, your brakes don't need a cable hanger (V-brakes) or some
other configuration where the rack doesn't attach to the fork crown and you
have the cable holder placed there (like I do in my Atlantis), you can
adapt a normal cable colder to be the holder for the decaleur:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/27565556620/in/album-72157625129486363/

This has the added advantage that the handlebar height/type doesn't
interfere with the decaleur.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roast your own coffee?

2017-08-15 Thread 'tim petersen' via RBW Owners Bunch
I follow the same process as you except I stick with 1 pound batches for
roasting.  Great minds think alike I guess.  I don't have a problem with cold
weather roasting (even though I live in SE Minnesota) with the Behmor 1600
since I store the machine in the house between roasts and my garage will get
down to a minimum of 20 plus degrees in the dead of winter.  Do you have a
sense of why you had a fire?Tim

On Sunday, August 13, 2017, 2:09:27 PM CDT, ADH wrote:

I've been roasting for over 20 years. Started with a Freshroast and have had a
Behmor for probably 10 years. All my beans have always come from Sweet Maria's.
One great reason to buy from them is that Tom (the owner) travels around the
world to source beans and he pays way more than Fair Trade prices to the
farmers. He pays directly to most growers and has long-term relationships
around the world.
I agree with most every comment so far. Roasting is WAY cheaper than buying
good roasted beans. Most Maria's beans are about $6+ a lb (order in bulk and
shipping only adds another $0.50 a lb). Note that beans lose some of their
weight during the roasting process, so your 16 oz. roast may net at 14 oz.
I never tried the popper/heat gun/economical methods. Here's how I would make
the decision. Buying a Behmor breaks even at roughly 50 lbs of coffee (figuring
$6/lb between roasting and retail. Maria's sells it for $369 which includes 8
lbs of beans). So, if you use a pound a week, it'd be a year or so. BUT... if
it's not something you decide to do long-term, you can easily sell a used
Behmor on eBay for probably 75% of what you paid for it. So that's the math.
As for the "experience"... it's not exactly set and forget. I used to roast
small batches frequently because... the coffee police say beans need to be...
perfect and perfectly fresh. Some years ago I decided that it just didn't
matter that much. Most times when I drink coffee, I just drink coffee and don't
think about whether it has hints of dried fruit, molasses, and dense chocolate,
or it's floral with citrus overtones. My ritual now is to roast 3 lbs of beans
consecutively in one pound batches (that I throw in the freezer). I do not wait
an hour for the Behmor to cool down. I don't pre-heat. I don't check voltage
and I don't vary from the automatic program. I hit the 1 lb button and start.
When I hear the first crack I press the C button. This batching method takes
about an hour (20 mins a roast). I do it outside. The Behmor has two quirks,
both of which are irritating. One, as mentioned, is that it won't work in low
temps. I live near Boston, so that is a pain. Second, there is an insanity
inducing requirement to press the Start button when the roast is 75% done,
otherwise the machine shuts down. The purpose is so you don't walk away from
the machine during a roast because it can catch on fire (which I can attest
to). But there is no audible alarm, so it's a pain. Another "chore" is cleaning
it. I use a Dustbuster to clean out the chaff between roasts. And every 5 lbs
you need to Simple Green the inside. Have I convinced you it's too hard? Hope
not. I've been doing it for 20 years and I am not a coffee snob. I do it
because...
I love good coffee that is not overroasted (which means no Starbucks, etc.).
The coffee I like costs $12-15/lb. retail, which kills me. I also enjoy the
process of roasting beans. I read or listen to music for the hour or so it
takes. I don't mind cleaning the machine. I also love my own coffee enough that
I rarely buy a cup retail (I used to buy a to-go cup or two of coffee at least
once a weekday... that was probably $1000/year). After 20 years, I have
probably saved at least $5000 on the roast side and $15-20,000 not buying to-go
coffee. That's not an exaggeration. The money I didn't spend was invested in
the stock market. Someone else can do the math, but I figure roasting my own
coffee for 20 years just paid for my new car and then some.
Finally (I know, you thought this would never end)... I live near George Howell
who is a coffee legend. I met him at his company and among other things told
him I liked my beans best after resting 5-6 days, not 2-3. He agreed. But it
doesn't matter what I like. Roasting will consistently give you $12 results for
half the price. But only if you enjoy the process.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Fender recommendations

2017-08-15 Thread Peter Turskovitch
Gilles Berthoud makes wide enough fenders (60mm). They are stainless steel,
which I know you weren't asking for, but the weight is within 100g of the
honjo's, they are much stronger, the hardware is better, and they cost less
than half as much. They are also perfectly flat laterally and evenly
radiused, unlike the similar-looking VO fenders.

[RBW] WFS : Berthoud H-121 Decaleur

2017-08-15 Thread Keenan Cummings
Or looking for a recommendation of a nice and long Decaleur. I've got a good
amount of space between stem and random bag. I've got a big ol' Ocean Air
Cycles Docena "demi-porteur" bag. From all my searching, the Berthoud will do
the job. But they are hard to get a hold of (Peter White, Box Dog, and Ben's
Cycles are all out). Any help is very appreciated.

I've got the Zeppelins (650b version) on a bike with WTB Horizons, (650b x

a lot of overspray getting past the fender and onto me and the bike. If
you're at all worried about frame clearance, though, I agree that the

[RBW] Re: Dog trailer for bikes - any experience or recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread gordo
I thought I'd post an update now that the dog has become comfortable in the
trailer and made his maiden voyage:

The Burley Tail Wagon was a cinch to set up and attach to the bike. I
scored a used one on Craigslist and it is just large enough for the pooch.

Wally's gradual approach was key - I first set up the trailer in our living
room and loaded it up with treats hidden in every nook and cranny so that
Pancho (the dog) would become comfortable. I added a rectangular travel
dog bed to the floor of the trailer to prevent sliding and to make it
harder for him to find the treats (I placed them under the bed so that he
would really have to twist around and get comfortable moving within the
space). I did all of this with the main flap open to avoid claustrophobia.
After a few days, I introduced some extra tasty treats (beef lungs) and
closed the flap. After doing this a few times I moved the trailer into the
lobby of our building and attached it to my bike - I then lured Pancho into
the trailer with some beef lung bits and the rest is history. We rode to
the dog park today and he was calm as can be. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that he will be up for a repeat adventure tomorrow.

Now I need to swap out my granny gear for the smaller 24t - pulling around
a 50 lb dog is no joke!

Thanks again to all who responded with suggestions.

Cheers,

Eric in SF

[RBW] Re: Clem H with drop bars?

2017-08-15 Thread Jeremy Tavan
Just as a follow-up, I have removed the dirt drop bars after a few rides.
While it was comfortable enough to ride, I just wasn't a fan of the overall
aggressive feel of the bike set up that way, particularly for the family
rides with my son on the trailer bike clamped to the back of the Clem. I've
put on a set of Albatross bars on a long (130mm, 105°) stem that I had
handy, and this seems to put the bars in a comfortable place for me. I'll
know more after some test rides, but this more-conventional approach seems
like it may work better. Oh well - it was an easy enough experiment.

[RBW] Boulder Tips

2017-08-15 Thread Minh
Hi all,

I'm heading to Boulder next month, there seems to be a few locals here?
I'm not bringing a bike but could use a few tips on trails--either hiking
or trail running. I like peace and quiet so would prefer those types of
trails (if possible). I'll have a car so getting around won't be a
problem.

I'll also take any food suggestions you may have--not much of a drinker
though but you can offer your beer suggestions for the crowd! Thanks for
any tips.

[RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread Scott Calhoun
For several years, I've had the Thule Doulbletrack Rack that I think is a
generation earlier that the one you are inquiring about. I think you can
still buy it new
here:
https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Bike-Racks/Thule/TH990XT.html?feed=npn=EAIaIQobChMIyL6gydHZ1QIVBZR-Ch1vQAu6EAQYASABEgJF4PD_BwE

I like it because it accommodates all of the bike types and sizes that I
deal with and will work with fenders just fine. Sometimes, handlebars and
saddles will interfere with each other, but you can slide the wheel mounts
fore and aft to make it work in most cases. It also locks. I've driven with
bikes on it from Tucson to N.C. and back and Tucson to Portland and back
without issue.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Saluki 47cm

2017-08-15 Thread G.E.
Up for sale is my 47cm Rivendell Saluki. It is being sold as
frame/fork/headset/bb/cable stop-guides only.

The frame was purchased new and directly from Rivendell earlier this year
as a new-old-stock item and painted at that time. Since then, it was built
up and ridden fewer than 100 miles. Due to the build, there are some
scratches/blemishes to be found on the frame that have been circled in the
photos. One is on the underside of the top tube and is small, but visible,
and there are also a few blemishes/paint indentations on the chainstays due
to chain slap and the former attachment of a kickstand. I also noticed
while taking photos that there is a smaller, approximately 1in section on
the seat tube that seems to have some sort of hazy substance on it. This is
also circled in one of the photos.

The frame takes cantilever brakes and 650b wheels (not included).

It's a fantastic (and beautiful) bike, but is a duplicate for me and I need
to make room for and help fund a project that is coming my way soon. $1450
(shipping not included, but available within the continental US with buyer
covering actual costs). Photos can be seen here:
https://flic.kr/s/aHsm1hi6AG. If you have questions or interest, feel free
to PM me. Thanks! :)

[RBW] Re: How do you guys do it, buying a bike sight unseen

2017-08-15 Thread Garth

Firstly, not all Sugino cranks are labeled as 9/8/7 speed, the Mighty Tour
110 double and or triple is called a 10 speed.

2. The only difference it seemsFrom here, reply #13 and 15,

* "10 speed cranks offset the rings apart 7mm vs. 6mm for 9 speed cranks.
(According to a machinist in the Frame forum who measured.) I suppose to
gain more cross chain clearance in the small ring and link alignment while
shifting for the 2 special 10 speed ring sets. *"

*"The wider 7mm ring-center to ring-center spacing of 10 speed is
ironically the same space that 7/8 speed rings had - meaning you can update
an older crank if you want with new 9/10 speed rings assuming the bolt
patterns are compatible. As to the 10 speed chain on the 9s rings... yes
that will work fine." *4. So in real world use it may not affect anything
using a 9 sp crank and 10 sp. cogset.

5. Frankly, I have been riding on Origin 8 110 double cranks for a year and
am quite happy. The sell for $50 with a nice silver finish. I can honestly
say these feel notably stiffer and thicker than the XD's which they
replaced, at least the 3 pair I had. Standing I can tell. I had not ridden
a double in a long time, and it reminded me of how much I love doubles.
36/50 rings and a 13-32 sp. FW. And I do love the big rings and big cogs, I
never liked the small small stuff, just never made sense to me.

I used to believe more $$ always gave you more ... it never did.

[RBW] Re: Jan's Yellow Rivendell

2017-08-15 Thread iamkeith
I guess i don't see how that could be considered a high or artificially
driven-up price. It's still considerably less than any current, lugged
production frame - US or otherwise - and, in near perfect condition, has just
as much life left in it. It's also historically significant and more unique
with those lugs and that crown. On the other hand, in contrast to the
Sachs-built frame being discussed concurrently, it doesn't suffer from the
baggage of being a custom, and the idea that it was 'too' unique, and built for
a specific person. I guess I understand that some people might think that a
used bike should always be obtainable for bargain prices, but not me. If i was
in the market for a road frame and this one fit, I'd choose it over a roadeo in
a heartbeat, even at the same price. Unique is good.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roast your own coffee?

2017-08-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lee, you're conflating two people and certainly insulting Tim in the
process. Grin.

Yes. You can use a saucepan and wood spoon to constantly stir a pound of
beans on medium heat that will yield 14ish ounces. 1-3 days before that
runs out, roast some more. You'll spend about 20 minutes per roast, set up,
roasting, and clean up all said once you get familiar (which will take you
one time. Seriously. It's easy.). If you like it and want a machine
dedicated to roasting, go for a roaster after you've experienced it the
saucepan way.

Patrick

Does anyone know the date, the angles, size, tubing, etc? I know Jan wrote

follows or deviates from the usual Grantian design.

[RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread Ed Carolipio
I have the Swagman XTC2 rack which is similar to the Hollywood one but IMO
the fit and finish on the Swagman is a little nicer. (I've owned both.)
I've had no issues with fenders, racks, or mixte frames, and I've even
hauled our Xtracycle Edgerunner (long tail cargo bike) with room to spare.
Not as fancy as the Thule so it costs less.

http://www.swagman.net/product/x-tc2/

It doesn't come with a decent integrated system to lock the bike or the
hitch bolt. (Workarounds are, of course, available.) There's no mechanism
to move the bike out of the way to open the trunk or tailgate, so I just
plan accordingly. And I wouldn't use it with a carbon fiber frame.

As a side comment, I personally would be reluctant to get the Thule rack
you link. It's a great rack but I don't like how it doesn't fold compactly
when off the car. Platform racks are large and oddly shaped, so the ones
I've owned have been a pain to store. With lots of room, that wouldn't be
an issue, but garage space for me is a rare and precious commodity.

[RBW] Re: New Medium Saddlesack (Blue)

2017-08-15 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Hi Tim,

"Much contempletion" has me smiling.
I just bought a saddlesack and went through a similar thought process: blue
vs olive, medium vs large, etc.
I ended up buying the medium and exchanging it for the large without
installing it. Interesting that you found it looks bigger on the bike.
Maybe I could have kept the medium and avoided the hassle. Oh, well. I'm
happy with my decision.
And FWIW my wife rejected the blue for my gen 1 green Sam.

Enjoy.

[RBW] Re: How much drop from the bar can I get out of a Berthoud decaleur?

2017-08-15 Thread Ron Mc
I've posted these before

Set up for a tall Acorn rando on a 25" Raleigh frame, I just measured the
drop - right at 80mm, using the long Berthoud decaleur, with it tilted
forward enough to grab the bag properly.

I'm looking to buy another of these to also use the bag on my upright bike
with Map bars in almost identical height position.

[RBW] Re: New Medium Saddlesack (Blue)

2017-08-15 Thread Broccoli Cog
Hi Jay, I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one that struggles with
this type of thing. Oh well, we are fortunate to have such good choices and
the means to purchase such a gorgeous bike bag. To clarify when I put it on
the bike I didn't think it appeared large rather I was surprised as to how
much stuff you can pack inside. For me the choice was correct because I
wanted it to hold my sleeping bag, tent, stove and a few other items for
overnights. I have a Wald basket on the front with a Swift Sugarloaf bag as
well. For me this is a perfect setup. For my next bike I may end up getting
the large. I think there is also quite a bit of value in having that extra
space when you need it.

[RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
I use a Transit rack that I got for $200 from Performance a few years ago.
It looks exactly like the 2-bike version of the Hollywood rack that Weth
linked to above, and I love it except for one thing: I have to secure it
with a strap leading from the pole to the front edge of the trunk,
tightened down to prevent bouncing. The strap comes with the rack, but
it's a minor hassle to install and prevents access to the trunk while it's
installed. The link to the Hollywood says it "features patented 'no
wobble-no tools' hitch tightening system" which would make this perfect for
my bikes, all of which have fenders. I'm going to look more into the
Hollywood when I get a chance.

I noticed that the Berthoud decaleur looks like it has alot of
downward reach to it.

There are (according to Peter Whiter's web site) two sizes, one with
more downward reach than the other. Looking at the Berthoud web site,
I see listed for the part they call the "fork" -- you'd call it the
arms, probably -- there's a select list with four sizes: 121, 90, 70 &
50. Not sure about the units, but am guessing they're mm.

Can I swivel it downward for max reach, or does it just stick out from
the stem straight?

Yes you can, as you can see below.

About how much drop could I get cm-wise depending on which length
extension I used?

I figure I will mount the Berthoud on-the-bag receiving rods just
above where my Compass decaleur flat bar on the bag is.

Then I can swap the bag from bike to bike as needed.

*But the main question is how much drop reach below the bars could I

This is a Berthoud 2886, same size as the GB28, and the bike is a 60
cm. The full size image is here:

Re: [RBW] Hitch rack recommendations?

2017-08-15 Thread Tim Gavin
John-

The Saris Superclamp has hooks that go over the top of the wheels, like
many other tray racks.

If you have fenders, then the clamp goes over the fender. I don't trust
the security of that (my fender holding my bike up), and I think it would
eventually damage the fender.

That's why I prefer ones that clamp over the top tube, like the Thule
Double Track, Saris Freedom, or the Hollywood racks. Most top tube clamps
are easily compatible with a mixte, without adapters.
