Re: [RBW] Re: 60cm Maxway Hillborne Photos
Looks great! You really take some fantastic bike pictures. I love that Hillborne orange. I've been riding a Surly Pacer quite a bit lately, and it's equipped with Shimano Tiagra brifters. It's the first brifter equipped bike that I've ridden in a long time. I know it's sort of sacrilege on this list, but I really like the brifters a lot. They're super ergonomic and they shift perfectly (at least for now). What kind of bar tape did you use on the Hillborne? Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?
I'm having my Atlantis repainted this winter. The original paint is still in pretty good shape for the most part; other than minor scratches all over it and a fairly significant ding/dent/gouge in the top tube. But I've never been a huge fan of the stock 'lantis color (although it has grown on me some). I'm having the repaint done by Chris Kvale (a local frame builder) and while I'm at it, I'm going to have him add mid-fork and mid-seat-stay rack braze-ons. And in a distinctly non-Rivish move, I'm seriously thinking about having him replace the threaded steerer with a threadless one. I just like the threadless set-up a whole lot better and I found a TIG welded stem tby Chris Kelly that would work perfectly. In fact, I could have it painted to match. Re: [RBW] Re: Filed down Sugino XD2
I'm going along with those who are saying they'd bolt those cranks on and ride. Back in the early 90's I had a Cook Bros. crankset that wouldn't quite clear the big square chainstays on my Mountain Klein. I took them to work and and had a machinist there take almost 1/4 of material off the inside of each arm so they'd clear. Never had a problem with the cranks. Finally retired the frame (after having a crack in the seat tube repaired) when the dropouts were completely beat out by the axles. Once you bolt them on you'll probably never think about them again. [RBW] Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe

I'd like to verify that the TD is indeed a 12cm because I'd like to sell it and I don't want to sell someone a 11cm stem that I've advertised as a 12cm. Re: [RBW] Re: Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe
On Mon, Dec 6, 2010 at 12:23 PM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: Well then all you want to do is determine the right name of your TechDLX, so you can sell it correctly. Right? The bike I have in the cubicle now has an 11cm TechDLX and it measures a true 110mm, center to center, laying my metric ruler flat along the top line of the stem. My Nitto Pearl, which is also called an 11, measures more like 113mm by the same method. Perhaps your lugged Nitto runs long like the Pearl and is really 123mm or so? So I think what you are doing is deciding if you should sell your TechDLX as a 12 or an 11. My 11 really measures 11. There is no way I could convince myself that this TechDLX is either a 10 or a 12. It's definitely an 11. It sounds to me that your TechDLX is most likely a 12 and you are finding that the lugged 12 runs a touch longer than the TechDLX 12. Is that possible? Yes. Correct. I'm trying to determine the correct extension (as specified by Nitto/RBW) for my TechDLX. Thanks for your help William. I'll measure my TechDLX in the manner you described when I get home and see what I come up with. It is quite possible that they're both 12cm and the lugged stems run a little longer. But it's also possible that I've got an 11cm TechDLX and I'm erroneously remembering it as a 12cm. Re: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?
I don't disagree with the responses that you've received so far, recommending the Hunqapillar, Bombadil, and Hillborne. Any of those bikes would perform admirably in the conditions you describe and would make great choices. Of those, I'd probably lean towards the Hunq/Bomba for the increased tire clearance. Anyway, I just wanted to add that the tried-and-true Atlantis would work every bit as well under those conditions. It seems like it's sort of being overshadowed by the newer crop of bikes that Rivendell is offering. The Atlantis is still a great bike! I've had my Atlantis set-up with both 'stache bars and Noodles. I definitely prefer the Noodles. I like mustache bars a lot too. Re: [RBW] Re: Computers? No computers?
I didn't have a computer on my Atlantis up until last year when I started doing gravel races that require riders to follow the course using queue sheets that are based on specific distances. I never really had a desire to put a computer on the bike before that. I've had them on other bikes in the past and sort of fell into the routine of being a slave to them. But this time I've tried not to let myself go down that road. I just try to use it as a source of information and not to gauge my performance. In some ways I like knowing how far I've gone and how fast I covered the distance, etc. But I'm fine without one too, when I don't need it as a means to navigate. Re: [RBW] Re: Japanese Atlantis vs Wisconsin Waterford Atlantis
I wasn't aware that the remaining Toyo Atlantii were snapped up in the manner described when Grant first made it known that they would no longer be produced by Toyo. But I do recall some speculation that the end of the Toyo Atlantis may be the End of The Atlantis. So that might explain why the remaining ones quickly sold out. I agree with what others have said in that, despite subtle differences, neither is superior to the other. [RBW] Insane Dent Removal on Atlantis
Another dog-related bike damage story. I had the Atlantis in the work stand doing some work on it. When I was done I took it off of the stand, and leaned the bike against the stand with the saddle resting on the clamp. I had a couple of the dogs in the shop with me and when I went to put the tools away a Great Dane wrestling broke out (not uncommon). Sure enough, the bike and the work stand went down in a noisy heap. When I went to retrieve the bike, not only was there paint damage, there was a fairly significant dent on the top of the top tube. This is actually the second bike that I've had dented on account of a dog toppling it over. Crazy! I'm sure the dent was purely cosmetic but after I got over my initial anger and frustration, I got to wondering about how the dent might be removed, or if it were even possible. I had a channel lock and a clean rag sitting right there so I spontaneously stuck the rag into the jaws of the channel lock, adjusted the channel lock and positioned it below the top tube with the ends of the jaws on either side of the dent. I started gently and carefully (as much as possible) sort of oil-canning the tube. The bike was positioned under a fluorescent light fixture and there was a perfect line reflected along the top tube and it distorted when I squeezed the channel lock; so I could see what was happening with the tube. Kind of interesting! Anyway I patiently worked the dent in that manner, squeezing and releasing pressure while rotating the jaws and working them towards the dent. All the while watching the line that was reflected in the top tube to see how things were progressing. To my amazement, the dent was definitely improving. After working at it for quite awhile, the dent was almost completely gone! The paint is still bunged-up around where the dent was but if I were to touch it up, I bet someone who didn't know it was there would never even notice that the frame was dented. I can't say that I'd recommend this technique because it could easily end-up doing more harm than good. Especially if one got over zealous. I have a bad habit of trying things that could result in making things worse. And often times things do get worse! I mean really? Squeezing the tube with a channel lock? On a fairly expensive frame? This time it worked quite well though. I'm still somewhat in disbelief. Just thought I'd share it with y'all. Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
I've used both the 35mm Paselas and the 38mm Marathon Racers on the Atlantis. I actually wore out the tread on the Paselas and never had any problems with the side walls. Both ride nicely. I would say that the Racers ride a bit smoother; probably just due to the slight increase in volume, but it could have something to do with the casing material as well. I don't know if I'd say that the Racers have more tread than the Supremes. The tread pattern is really shallow and they almost function as a slick. That said, I've ridden the Racers on gravel and they perform well. The Racers *seem* to be wearing a little better than the Paselas so far. I'd say that I like the Racers better but they're considerably more expensive than the Paselas too. Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?
Someone recently asked for the actual width of the 38mm Marathon Racers. I measured mine with a digital caliper and, as I recall, they were at about 39mm. They are mounted to Sun Ryno Lite rims, which are fairly wide. Shaun Meehan On Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 10:36 AM, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote: Interesting, my 6 month old JB Greens measure 33.5mm on Synergies. But Michael_S's 42 ETRTO Schwalbe Smart Sams (UK only) measure 41 knob to knob and 38 wall to sidewall (don't know what rim), so I guess severe undersizing isn't true for all Schwalbes. Does anyone have a Racer they can measure to compare stated with actual width? I have found the schwalbes measure true to stated ETRO data not what is on the box at times. Proportionally it should be like moving up from Rolly Pollys to JB, the 38 racers are the next step as far as I can see. For the moment it is JB green for me. I just want something that won't wash out in deep sand as easily, and still be really nice on the road where I ride 70-80% of the time. For dedicated offroading, I have 42mm IRC Mythos XC Slicks, which do the job very well and still are decent on the road. On most of the skinwall tires I have had, the sidewalls turned threadbare (due to UV/ozone, I assume) before the tread wore out, and I'd much rather have that happen but have a supple tire than have a bomb-proof tire that feels dead. So I'll probably give the regular Marathons a miss. :) I am about ready to order the 35 Paselas, because I have the sneaking suspicion that the 38 Marathon Racers are actually skinnier than the 35 Paselas, given that the 42 Supremes run 37.5 according to rivbike. If the Racers run true to size, please let me know as I may try them instead. I was on an organized charity ride where a rider went down in front of us right out of the gate, on a fairly short but steep climb. This incident was in a relatively populated and accessible area, but even so, we found out later that the guy didn't make it. He'd had a massive heart attack. [RBW] Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam
It's not that I don't like the bike. It's not that I don't use the bike. I ride it nearly every day. In fact, in a way, it might be my favorite bike. But while I'm riding it, my poor Atlantis collects dust in the garage. I've been thinking of building up a go fast bike because I've been doing some riding with some folks who like to pretend to go fast. Also, I've done a couple of sprint triathlons, and I might do more, and a fast type bike would be nice for that. In a way, there's quite a bit of overlap between the Atlantis and the Quickbeam in that they're both fendered, chubby tireable, lugged steel, set-up to carry stuff, etc... So I'm thinking of selling the QB, setting up the Atlantis as my primary commuter/errand bike and using the cash from the sale of the QB to fund the purchase of a go fast. I suppose I could set-up the 'lantis as a go fast but to me it seems like I'd be selling it short of its potential and it's probably not the ideal bike for that. Anyway, I'm posting to see: 1. What you all think I might be able to get for a complete 68cm QB (essentially stock except I moved the noodles to the 'lantis and put moustaches on the QB). Orange. Excellent condition. 2. If there's anyone on the list that might be interested in purchasing a 68cm QB if I decide to go this route. 3. To see if any of you think I'm crazy for considering doing this. Part of me thinks that someday I might regret selling the QB, especially since RBW may not do QB's anymore. Let alone 68cm QB's. But I can do everything I do with the QB on the Atlantis and I just don't ride the Atlantis all that much. And the Atlantis is a great bike too! It deserves to be ridden more. [RBW] Re: Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam
Interesting. Most who responded essentially said don't do it and no one expressed interest in buying my QB. If someone would've said please, please, please sell me your 68cm QB because I *really* want one and there are no more, I think I'd have thought seriously about selling it. After all I have a great 68cm Atlantis and it would be sort of cool to help out a fellow, tall Rivendell aficionado. All of the comments along the lines of you may never be able to get another one have definitely given me pause. As far as Patrick's comments regarding the importance of SS/fixed... I'm not sure how significant an issue that is. My Quickbeam was rendered out of commission for several months awhile back and I was forced to ride the Atlantis while I waited for a replacement. I didn't really miss a beat and it was cool to ride the Atlantis. I know Patrick is a big fan of fixed gears but I can't really say I missed the single-speed aspect of the QB. What I did miss was the perceived sportiness of the QB. But yesterday I compared the geometry of the 68cm Atlantis and Quickbeam on Jim's RBW page and they're very, very similar. So I don't know why I feel like the QB is sportier while the Atlantis feels more cruiserish. For some reason when I ride the QB, it feels more compact, and agile than the Atlantis (for lack of a better description). In any case I've got a lot to think about and I appreciate all the responses. I have to say that now I'm leaning towards keeping the QB and either setting-up the Atlantis as a better go-fast or finding some other means to fund the purchase of a (perhaps less expensive) go-fast bike. Out of curiosity (no one answered this part of the question) what do you all think a complete, used Quickbeam might go for? Thanks! I'm on my second Selle Anatomica. Mine is the Clydesdale version of the Titanico. I'm 6'5/~225 lbs. The first one I had stretched quite quickly and I had it almost fully tensioned when the threaded tensioning hardware piece broke off of the saddle frame at the welds during a ride. I sent it back to SA and the immediately sent me a replacement. In the meantime I had put an old Brooks B17 on my bike. I just put the replacement SA on the Atlantis this spring. I don't have a ton of miles on the new one but so far, so good. Anyway, I find them to be comfortable but I'm not so sold on their durability yet. [RBW] Re: Nitto R14 Users
I've got a Mark's rack on the back of my Quickbeam and a Top Rack (R14) on the back of my Atlantis. Both of them are rock solid and neither of them rattle at all. They're great racks! I mainly use the Top Rack for carrying a Big Loafer and the Mark's to support a large saddle bag. I suppose the extra struts might be nice if you're carrying a lot of weight but they're definitely not necessary just to prevent jiggling and rattling. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam and Carbon Belt Drive
There was a thread about the belt-drive Trek Soho on a commuting forum that I occasionally participarte in. Three Soho owners chimed in and two of them said that after a period of time, their belts became very loud. Gates worked with one of them (through their Trek dealer) and they were able to quiet the drive on a couple of occasions but the noise continued to recur. I like the concept of the belt drive but that would be a deal breaker for me. Re: [RBW] Re: 700x35c tires
The Marathon Racers roll really nicely IMO. I ran a set of 700 X 38's on the Atlantis last summer/fall and really like them. Very little tread wear so far. I did have one flat with the Racers but that's not bad. I'm starting to think that you can't go wrong with Schwalbes. I've got about 1,500 miles on a set of the Marathon Pluses. Zero flats and it appears there's a lot of life left in them. Not a fantastically comfortable ride with the Pluses, but for flatless (relatively) commuting, I'll take it. Re: [RBW] Re: Carboon failures
Yeah, March can get dicey on some lists. But it's starting to get nice here in Minnesota! Anyway, I agree with Jim's take on it. I think what Grant is getting at when he says steel is repairable is that it's possible to do a functional (albeit in some cases ugly) field repair that will get you on the road again on a steel frame. Even in Smalltown, USA or Lower Slobovia or wherever. I don't think he's claiming it's impossible to repair a carbon frame at all. It's been demonstrated that carbon frames can indeed be repaired, but it's necessary to ship the broken frame to an expert to do the work. Just wanted to add a little clarification to what Jim was saying. Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: More Hunka news
I think it looks great! It'll look even better when it gets the grey paint with the red, blue, or orange panels. I didn't like the look of the double-top-tube bikes at first but it has grown on me. I ride a 68cm Atlantis and Quickbeam now, and I don't notice much (if any) frame flex or anything. But for a bike that's more dialed in for off-road riding, like the Bomba or the Hunqa, it's probably a good idea. Even for the bigger AHH, it can't hurt. It's definitely a distinctive look! Re: [RBW] Re: steel handlebars?
As a point of reference, back in the day (when mountain bikes still used flat handlebars, thumb shifters, and no suspension) light-weight aluminum bars were becoming all the rage for mountain bikes; Answer/Easton was introducing the Taperlite and Hyperlite bars in a variety of zany anodized colors and competitors were following suit. I remember Salsa bucked the trend for a long time and offered their Moto handlebar in butted 4130 chromoly. The weight was fairly comparable to an aluminum bar and the claim was that it was more durable and that it offered better vibration damping properties than the aluminum bars. Re: [RBW] Re: google maps
I wonder how Google will go about deciphering and incorporating the data they receive from feedback. The route that it tells me to take for my commute is 8.7 miles, which is considerably shorter than the 13 mile route that I usually take. I really dislike riding that route, even though it's much more direct, because it sends me down a two-lane, blacktop highway with narrow lanes, no shoulder and a LOT of cars going 55mph to 70mph. I've ridden it occasionally when I'm in a hurry but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. At the same time, I would hesitate to report it as a problem because it *is* ridable. If someone like the woman Jim was discussing reported all of the problem routes that she identified, the folks at Google could be led to believe that virtually no roads are safe for riding. It's just so subjective that it seems like it'd be very difficult to sort through the feedback.
