Looks great! You really take some fantastic bike pictures. I love that
Hillborne orange. I've been riding a Surly Pacer quite a bit lately,
and it's equipped with Shimano Tiagra brifters. It's the first
brifter equipped bike that I've ridden in a long time. I know it's
sort of sacrilege on this list, but I really like the brifters a
lot. They're super ergonomic and they shift perfectly (at least for
now). What kind of bar tape did you use on the Hillborne?

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-08 Thread Shaun Meehan
I'm having my Atlantis repainted this winter. The original paint is
still in pretty good shape for the most part; other than minor
scratches all over it and a fairly significant ding/dent/gouge in the
top tube. But I've never been a huge fan of the stock 'lantis color
(although it has grown on me some). I'm having the repaint done by
Chris Kvale (a local frame builder) and while I'm at it, I'm going to
have him add mid-fork and mid-seat-stay rack braze-ons. And in a
distinctly non-Rivish move, I'm seriously thinking about having him
replace the threaded steerer with a threadless one. I just like the
threadless set-up a whole lot better and I found a TIG welded stem tby
Chris Kelly that would work perfectly. In fact, I could have it
painted to match.

I'm going along with those who are saying they'd bolt those cranks on

wouldn't quite clear the big square chainstays on my Mountain Klein. I
took them to work and and had a machinist there take almost 1/4 of
material off the inside of each arm so they'd clear. Never had a
problem with the cranks. Finally retired the frame (after having a
crack in the seat tube repaired) when the dropouts were completely
beat out by the axles. Once you bolt them on you'll probably never
think about them again.

[RBW] Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe

I can, of course, measure the two and determine the difference. The
problem is I'm not certain what the specified extension on the Techno
Deluxe is. I trust that the lugged stem is a 12cm because I just
bought it from RBW and it was labeled as such. I bought the Techno
Deluxe when I bought my Atlantis frame and IIRC, I ordered a 12cm.
When I hold them side-by-side the lugged stem looks a little longer.
I'd like to verify that the TD is indeed a 12cm because I'd like to
sell it and I don't want to sell someone a 11cm stem that I've
advertised as a 12cm. I looked and I didn't see the extension length
stamped on the stem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe

On Mon, Dec 6, 2010 at 12:23 PM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:

Well then all you want to do is determine the right name of your

The bike I have in the cubicle now has an 11cm TechDLX and it measures
a true 110mm, center to center, laying my metric ruler flat along the
top line of the stem.  My Nitto Pearl, which is also called an 11,
measures more like 113mm by the same method.  Perhaps your lugged
Nitto runs long like the Pearl and is really 123mm or so?

So I think what you are doing is deciding if you should sell your
TechDLX as a 12 or an 11.  My 11 really measures 11.  There is no way
I could convince myself that this TechDLX is either a 10 or a 12.
 It's definitely an 11.

It sounds to me that your TechDLX is most likely a 12 and you are
finding that the lugged 12 runs a touch longer than the TechDLX 12.
 Is that possible?

Yes. Correct. I'm trying to determine the correct extension (as
specified by Nitto/RBW) for my TechDLX. Thanks for your help William.
I'll measure my TechDLX in the manner you described when I get home
and see what I come up with. It is quite possible that they're both
12cm and the lugged stems run a little longer. But it's also possible
that I've got an 11cm TechDLX and I'm erroneously remembering it as a
12cm.

I don't disagree with the responses that you've received so far,
recommending the Hunqapillar, Bombadil, and Hillborne. Any of those
bikes would perform admirably in the conditions you describe and would
make great choices. Of those, I'd probably lean towards the Hunq/Bomba
for the increased tire clearance. Anyway, I just wanted to add that
the tried-and-true Atlantis would work every bit as well under those
conditions. It seems like it's sort of being overshadowed by the newer
crop of bikes that Rivendell is offering. The Atlantis is still a
great bike!

for those things; and they're better for everything else. At least in

got the 48cm version and the wide flats make it almost like having a

Re: [RBW] Re: Computers? No computers?

2011-02-15 Thread Shaun Meehan
I didn't have a computer on my Atlantis up until last year when I started
doing gravel races that require riders to follow the course using queue
sheets that are based on specific distances. I never really had a desire to
put a computer on the bike before that. I've had them on other bikes in the
past and sort of fell into the routine of being a slave to them. But this
time I've tried not to let myself go down that road. I just try to use it as
a source of information and not to gauge my performance. In some ways I like
knowing how far I've gone and how fast I covered the distance, etc. But I'm
fine without one too, when I don't need it as a means to navigate. I guess
you could say I can take them or leave them.

[RBW] Insane Dent Removal on Atlantis

2010-04-18 Thread Shaun Meehan
Another dog-related bike damage story. I had the Atlantis in the work
stand doing some work on it. When I was done I took it off of the
stand, and leaned the bike against the stand with the saddle resting
on the clamp. I had a couple of the dogs in the shop with me and when
I went to put the tools away a Great Dane wrestling broke out (not
uncommon). Sure enough, the bike and the work stand went down in a
noisy heap. When I went to retrieve the bike, not only was there paint
damage, there was a fairly significant dent on the top of the top
tube. This is actually the second bike that I've had dented on account
of a dog toppling it over. Crazy!

I'm sure the dent was purely cosmetic but after I got over my initial
anger and frustration, I got to wondering about how the dent might be
removed, or if it were even possible. I had a channel lock and a clean
rag sitting right there so I spontaneously stuck the rag into the jaws
of the channel lock, adjusted the channel lock and positioned it below
the top tube with the ends of the jaws on either side of the dent. I
started gently and carefully (as much as possible) sort of
oil-canning the tube. The bike was positioned under a fluorescent
light fixture and there was a perfect line reflected along the top
tube and it distorted when I squeezed the channel lock; so I could see
what was happening with the tube. Kind of interesting!

Anyway I patiently worked the dent in that manner, squeezing and
releasing pressure while rotating the jaws and working them towards
the dent. All the while watching the line that was reflected in the
top tube to see how things were progressing. To my amazement, the dent
was definitely improving. After working at it for quite awhile, the
dent was almost completely gone! The paint is still bunged-up around
where the dent was but if I were to touch it up, I bet someone who
didn't know it was there would never even notice that the frame was
dented.

I can't say that I'd recommend this technique because it could easily
end-up doing more harm than good. Especially if one got over zealous.
I have a bad habit of trying things that could result in making things
worse. And often times things do get worse! I mean really? Squeezing
the tube with a channel lock? On a fairly expensive frame? This time
it worked quite well though. I'm still somewhat in disbelief. Just
thought I'd share it with y'all.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?

2010-04-21 Thread Shaun Meehan
I've used both the 35mm Paselas and the 38mm Marathon Racers on the
Atlantis. I actually wore out the tread on the Paselas and never had
any problems with the side walls. Both ride nicely. I would say that
the Racers ride a bit smoother; probably just due to the slight
increase in volume, but it could have something to do with the casing
material as well. I don't know if I'd say that the Racers have more
tread than the Supremes. The tread pattern is really shallow and they
almost function as a slick. That said, I've ridden the Racers on
gravel and they perform well. The Racers *seem* to be wearing a little
better than the Paselas so far. I'd say that I like the Racers better
but they're considerably more expensive than the Paselas too.

I typically don't carry a whole lot of stuff with me. I have a Nitto

the total weight is probably in the neighborhood of 275 pounds. I
always default to the max recommended pressure when I inflate my tires
on account of my size; so initially I had the Racers inflated to 85
PSI. They rode fine at 85 but I noticed that after they lost some air,
they actually rode quite a bit better. The sweet spot for me seems
to be around 75 PSI.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tom Milton of Selle Anatomica

2010-04-27 Thread Shaun Meehan
I was on an organized charity ride where a rider went down in front of
us right out of the gate, on a fairly short but steep climb. Our
initial reaction was to stop and try to help, so we stopped
immediately. However some ride officials that arrived on the scene at
the same time we did, just as immediately told us to keep moving. This
incident was in a relatively populated and accessible area, but even
so, we found out later that the guy didn't make it. He'd had a massive
heart attack. So it's possible that Tom may not have made it even if
professional help were able to get to him sooner. Very sad indeed.

If anyone is stockpiling parts for a new Hunquapillar or just making
some spring adjustments to your current ride, I have identified some
items that are ebay bound unless someone here wants them first.  All
prices include US shipping.  I’ve priced things below what I think
they’ll likely fetch on ebay, so these prices are fairly firm.  Check
 or paypal.

Please contact me off the list at sprun...@cord.edu.

 Phil Wood wheelset.  $400.  36h. 700c.  135 mm rear OLD.  Takes 8/9
speed cassette.  No skewers or cassettes. Bontrager Fairlane silver
rims with asymmetric rear drilling.  Nice cosmetics.   I’m the second
owner of these wheels, but the original owner reported that he
purchased them from Rivendell in the pre-Rich days.  They spin smooth
and true. The freehub is nice and quiet.

 XTR M900 hubset.  $135.  Hard-to-find 36h version.  NOS.  135 mm rear
OLD.  Takes 8/9 speed cassette.  Screened logos are a bit faded.  No
skewers.  Build some light and sturdy dream wheels.  These are the
classic silver style hubs that Peter White raves about.  (Side rant:
where are all the older XTR skewers?  I’ve purchased three NOS sets of
these hubs over the last ten years and none have come with skewers.)

Phil Wood quick release axle kit.  135mm.  $50.  Here’s the axle and
spacers you need to convert a bolt-on hub to quick-release use or to
convert a narrower hub to 135mm OLD.  Everything is in excellent
condition.  This came off a 10-year-old cassette hub, but supposedly
it will fit a range of Phil hubs.

White Industries platform pedals. Silver.  $190.  These pedals are new
but without packaging.  They’ve not been mounted in a crank.  The
pedals are smooth and exquisitely made, but they’re not as wide as I
had hoped for my size 13 feet.  I stood on them in the living room and
decided to stick with my Nuovo Wides instead.  More info at
 http://www.whiteind.com/pedal.html

Tioga Surefoot 8 pedals, silver.  $55.  This is the BMX pedal that
Rivendell used to sell. The blunt tips are already installed, but I’ll
include the spikes and the little installation wrench.  Light and
 smooth.  Used about 25 miles.

Brooks B17 Champion Special.  $100.  Rare dark brown color. (not
honey).  Silver rails.  Ridden about 300 miles, so it’s not really
broken in yet.  Leather has been treated.  Tension screw never
touched.  I’ll include used matching leather bar wrap that’s been cut
into four pieces (I had one piece wrapped up from the tips to the
brake and one from the stem down to the brake.)

WTB Dirt Drop bar.  $80.  This is the classic drop bar with the
aggressive flair in the drops.  I bought this for a conversion that
didn’t happen because I decided that I preferred the more subtle Nitto
Dirt Drops that I got from Rivendell.  Sleeve shows some scratches but
the cosmetics are good overall.  Takes a 25.4 stem, such as the
Rivendell special edition Technomic Deluxe or the Periscopa.

WTB Slickasaurus tires.  26” x 1.5.  Pair.  $35.  This is a nice set
of 26 inch slicks.  They’ve been mounted but ridden less than 10
miles.  Blackwalls.   I have the 700c version on my Quickbeam, and
 they’re a quiet and smooth-riding tire.

Panaracer Pasella 700x37 TG tire.  Free for cost of shipping on 7# box
(or I’ll include them absolutely free with a larger item). Ridden
about 1000 miles on a front wheel.  Still looks pretty good.  Tan
 wall.

[RBW] WTT: Big Loafer for Little Loafer

2010-05-01 Thread Shaun Meehan
Hi all,

I'm reconfiguring my stable a little bit and the Atlantis is going
to become my main commuter/all-'rounder (in place of the Quickbeam,
which I sold). Oddly, for me that means I'm going to swap my Nitto Top
Rack for the Mark's Mini. Anyway, I've got a blue tweed Big Loafer
(very good condition) that I'd like to swap for a Little Loafer (any

anyone has a Little Loafer they'd like to swap for a Big Loafer,

 Will do, on the updates.

 Full on Rando bike.

 So far:
1 tubing, Sachs fork crown [possibly change that though, thinking
about options there ~would go with one of Bob's custom crowns, but
they are too wide for this build], fully lugged [of course], 130mm
spacing in the rear, might step into foreign waters and go with a
threadless steerer this time around [which of course allows for some
neat and inventive legroom for Bob to work some magic up front] and
 'yep' to front/rear racks + fenders.  No super-fat/no super-narrow
 tires, just super medium. ;-)

Most exciting for me [well, all of it is exciting!]... Bob has asked
me, and it makes sense based on our relationship, to let him really
 fly this solo.
We discussed basic details, wants/needs sorta stuff... and past that
he said, You trust me, that I know... let me go alone on this.  I
know what you love, I know what you're aiming for, I know what you've
got planned for your next 2-3 years on a bike, and I know what you've
accomplished on a bike so far.

He pretty much wrapped everything up with 'So, let me build you this
bike solo: it'll ride like you cannot imagine, and visually with the
little details I've got planned for things, the integration of things,
the lug carvings, all of it... well, let's leave it at, it's going to
be the most stunning bike I've ever built, period.

I couldn't really argue or disagree -on any level- with that kind of
 plan.

Really that's about it for now.  Oh, and it's 700c and going to be SS
 coupled too.

there's a lot of back sweep on the bar! Especially if you don't cut them

Cool! I've been thinking about buying a go fast bike and this would be
perfect. I wonder if it will be offered in the full range of sizes like the
AHH or if it'll be limited to the middle of the bell curve like the Atlantis

this bike is successful for RBW. It seems like it should be a welcome

Like others have said, I don't take Grant's post to mean that the Atlantis

Japanese, Toyo made bikes are going away. Grant frequently mentions in his

doubt that they'd dump it altogether. Anyway, time will tell I suppose.

[RBW] Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam

2009-09-25 Thread Shaun Meehan
It's not that I don't like the bike. It's not that I don't use the bike. I
ride it nearly every day. In fact, in a way, it might be my favorite bike.
But while I'm riding it, my poor Atlantis collects dust in the garage. I've
been thinking of building up a go fast bike because I've been doing some
riding with some folks who like to pretend to go fast. Also, I've done a
couple of sprint triathlons, and I might do more, and a fast type bike
would be nice for that. In a way, there's quite a bit of overlap between the
Atlantis and the Quickbeam in that they're both fendered, chubby tireable,
lugged steel, set-up to carry stuff, etc... So I'm thinking of selling the
QB, setting up the Atlantis as my primary commuter/errand bike and using the
cash from the sale of the QB to fund the purchase of a go fast. I suppose
I could set-up the 'lantis as a go fast but to me it seems like I'd be
selling it short of its potential and it's probably not the ideal bike for
that.

Anyway, I'm posting to see:

1. What you all think I might be able to get for a complete 68cm QB
(essentially stock except I moved the noodles to the 'lantis and put
moustaches on the QB). Orange. Excellent condition.
2. If there's anyone on the list that might be interested in purchasing a
68cm QB if I decide to go this route.
3. To see if any of you think I'm crazy for considering doing this.

Part of me thinks that someday I might regret selling the QB, especially
since RBW may not do QB's anymore. Let alone 68cm QB's. But I can do
everything I do with the QB on the Atlantis and I just don't ride the
Atlantis all that much. And the Atlantis is a great bike too! It deserves
to be ridden more. Any of ya'll have any thought on this?

Definitely a possibility I suppose. I do have to say that it feels sort of

[RBW] Re: Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam

2009-09-26 Thread Shaun Meehan
Interesting. Most who responded essentially said don't do it and no one
expressed interest in buying my QB. If someone would've said please,
please, please sell me your 68cm QB because I *really* want one and there
are no more, I think I'd have thought seriously about selling it. After all
I have a great 68cm Atlantis and it would be sort of cool to help out a
fellow, tall Rivendell aficionado. All of the comments along the lines of
you may never be able to get another one have definitely given me pause.

As far as Patrick's comments regarding the importance of SS/fixed... I'm not
sure how significant an issue that is. My Quickbeam was rendered out of
commission for several months awhile back and I was forced to ride the
Atlantis while I waited for a replacement. I didn't really miss a beat and
it was cool to ride the Atlantis. I know Patrick is a big fan of fixed gears
but I can't really say I missed the single-speed aspect of the QB. What I
did miss was the perceived sportiness of the QB. But yesterday I compared
the geometry of the 68cm Atlantis and Quickbeam on Jim's RBW page and
they're very, very similar. So I don't know why I feel like the QB is
sportier while the Atlantis feels more cruiserish. For some reason when
I ride the QB, it feels more compact, and agile than the Atlantis (for lack
of a better description).

In any case I've got a lot to think about and I appreciate all the
responses. I have to say that now I'm leaning towards keeping the QB and
either setting-up the Atlantis as a better go-fast or finding some other
means to fund the purchase of a (perhaps less expensive) go-fast bike. Out
of curiosity (no one answered this part of the question) what do you all
think a complete, used Quickbeam might go for? Thanks!

2009-09-27 Thread Shaun Meehan
I'm on my second Selle Anatomica. Mine is the Clydesdale version of the
Titanico. I'm 6'5/~225 lbs. The first one I had stretched quite quickly and
I had it almost fully tensioned when the threaded tensioning hardware piece
broke off of the saddle frame at the welds during a ride. I sent it back to
SA and the immediately sent me a replacement. In the meantime I had put
an old Brooks B17 on my bike. I just put the replacement SA on the Atlantis
this spring. I don't have a ton of miles on the new one but so far, so good.

I've got about 1,500 miles on a set of the Marathon Pluses. Zero flats

Re: [RBW] Re: Carboon failures

2010-03-09 Thread Shaun Meehan
Yeah, March can get dicey on some lists. But it's starting to get nice
here in Minnesota! Anyway, I agree with Jim's take on it. I think what
Grant is getting at when he says steel is repairable is that it's
possible to do a functional (albeit in some cases ugly) field repair
that will get you on the road again on a steel frame. Even in
Smalltown, USA or Lower Slobovia or wherever. I don't think he's
claiming it's impossible to repair a carbon frame at all. It's been
demonstrated that carbon frames can indeed be repaired, but it's
necessary to ship the broken frame to an expert to do the work. Just
wanted to add a little clarification to what Jim was saying.

Re: [RBW] Re: More Hunka news

2010-03-11 Thread Shaun Meehan
I think it looks great! It'll look even better when it gets the grey
paint with the red, blue, or orange panels. I didn't like the look of
the double-top-tube bikes at first but it has grown on me. I ride a
68cm Atlantis and Quickbeam now, and I don't notice much (if any)
frame flex or anything. But for a bike that's more dialed in for
off-road riding, like the Bomba or the Hunqa, it's probably a good
idea. Even for the bigger AHH, it can't hurt. It's definitely a
distinctive look!

Re: [RBW] More Hunka news

2010-03-11 Thread Shaun Meehan
I'd be curious to know what the seat height is set at on the 62cm bike
as it's pictured. Just to get an idea of how the expanded frames
compare to the traditionally configured frames size-wise. My seat
height is ~34 and I'm curious if a 62cm Hunqa would fit me. I have no
doubt that a 64cm Bomba would be a great fit.

Shaun, I read you post and had an idea  just out of curiosity, I
opened the picture in photoshop-  where there's a tool called the

arithmetic, I figure that the seat height on that 62cm Hunqapillar is
approximately ~83.5cm (this is assuming there is minimal distortion in
the photo due to the camera lens).

Cool! Thanks for the info. If that's accurate, I'd need to raise that
saddle by about an inch, which seems pretty reasonable. Especially
considering that a little extra clearance might be desirable for a
bike that would be ridden off-road, as Bill pointed out.

Re: [RBW] Re: steel handlebars?

2010-03-11 Thread Shaun Meehan
As a point of reference, back in the day (when mountain bikes
still used flat handlebars, thumb shifters, and no suspension)
light-weight aluminum bars were becoming all the rage for mountain
bikes; Answer/Easton was introducing the Taperlite and Hyperlite bars
in a variety of zany anodized colors and competitors were following
suit. I remember Salsa bucked the trend for a long time and offered
their Moto handlebar in butted 4130 chromoly. The weight was fairly
comparable to an aluminum bar and the claim was that it was more
durable and that it offered better vibration damping properties than
the aluminum bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: google maps

2010-03-12 Thread Shaun Meehan
I wonder how Google will go about deciphering and incorporating the
data they receive from feedback. The route that it tells me to take
for my commute is 8.7 miles, which is considerably shorter than the 13
mile route that I usually take. I really dislike riding that route,
even though it's much more direct, because it sends me down a
two-lane, blacktop highway with narrow lanes, no shoulder and a LOT of
cars going 55mph to 70mph. I've ridden it occasionally when I'm in a
hurry but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. At the same
time, I would hesitate to report it as a problem because it *is*
ridable. If someone like the woman Jim was discussing reported all of
the problem routes that she identified, the folks at Google could be
led to believe that virtually no roads are safe for riding. It's just
so subjective that it seems like it'd be very difficult to sort
through the feedback.

it is a VERY new feature and in Beta. A) Did you select bicycling as
the mode of travel from the drop down menu? B) If you did and it gave
you that result you should click the report a problem link and report
 the issue.

Personally... it gave me what looks to be a reasonable route from my
home in central Massachusetts to work in Boston (not a commute I plan
to make often at 32 miles but good to do once in a while).

 Looking forward to it!
