Re: [RE-wrenches] Sol-Ark 15k

2022-04-15 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
That's a different scenario, as a 100A genny would have a 100A OCPD. I
understand that the inverter output rating is limited, but what section of
code allows a 200A breaker to protect a #4 wire?

I'm not following the wiring diagrams for this new inverter. It has
200A pass-through capability with an integrated 200A load disconnect. But
then it says the wire gauge for the load out wiring can be #4 to 2/0.

In an off-grid scenario where there is no generator, the max continuous
output is 62.5A, so I assume 80A circuit protection could be used with 80A
rated wire (#4), but how is that circuit protection implemented if the 200A
breaker is integrated? Do you have to run a short piece of 2/0 to an
external 80A rated OCPD and then step down to #4?

You must meet all expected source output potentials within the design and
operating limits, as long as the distribution panel and connected wiring is
rated for the max output of the protected source then you are good. A 200
ATS connected to a 10 kW genny does not require 2/0 as it will never meet
that rating. Just remember its whatever the max output can be plus your
margin.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase

2022-04-15 Thread Jay via RE-wrenches
I’ve been following the enphase thread.

I’ve used AP systems before and so far reliable and much less expensive.

Their new DS3 inverters are much less expensive and larger capacity

But to the point of starting voltage MPPT range and watts
DS3 voltage range:
DS3 S/L 16-60v,
DS3 26-60v

MPPT range:
DS3 -S 22-48v
DS3-L 25-55v
DS3. 32-55

Wattage
-S 640 va
-L 768 va
DS3 880 va

I’ve got a system for micros coming up and probably leaning this way.
Curious what others think

Jay

Kirk,

We have seen many of the conversion kits not work out of the box. I believe
it is a firmware/software mismatch issue. If you call Enphase, ask them to
make sure the Envoy software is compatible with the conversion kit
microinverter and update all software. This should resolve the issue.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase Legacy micro replacement

2022-04-15 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
I have been dealing with a legacy Enphase system ever since the
installation about 11-12 years ago. And I stopped using Enphase after the
massive failure rate of these first gen M190 inverters. Almost all of them
have been replaced at least once, the good news is I only have about -15-
of the originals waiting to fail out of -113-.

As some of you know RMA replacements were at first the original M190 (i.e.
the type daisy chained w/ "internal" trunk cable), then the M215 with a
dedicated trunk cable, sent with adapters to mate with the M190, lastly the
IQ7 w/ its own adapters to the M190 and M215.

So my system is 208, 3-phase. I just swapped out -5- more of the M190's
with newer generation models and am getting "ac out of range" errors on
half of the micros that were working fine before the swap. The error is not
unique to any one string.

I wonder if all this replacing with multi-gen micros has created a phase
imbalance. Enphase stresses keeping the phases balanced, but I don't see
how they can follow their own advice mating all these different micros
together. I am awaiting their response.

Are the original M190s a true 3-phase output? Or are they smart enough
internally to balance the phases through some sort of switching? The M215s
and IQ7 series are 208 single phase, and the trunk cable is wired in a
repeating connector-to-connector: Line A-B, A-C, B-C single phase
arrangement for balancing. All thoughts welcome, thanks.

Not to sound like a commercial, but I've had good results with "Tub
O'Towels" heavy duty wipes.   Its got a lemon base that seems easy on
most surfaces, but it will take paint off with a few seconds of elbow
grease.   Hoe Depot has them sometimes, or Northern Tool carries them
too.  You'll use them for all sorts of stuff; good to keep on the truck.

We had some painters try to paint a house in 35 mph winds and (of

there any mild solvents you might recommend to help clean this up?
Or just elbow grease?

Thanks!

[RE-wrenches] Sol-Ark 15k

2022-04-15 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
I'm not following the wiring diagrams for this new inverter. It has 200A
pass-through capability with an integrated 200A load disconnect. But then
it says the wire gauge for the load out wiring can be #4 to 2/0.

Hi Wrenches,

We had some painters try to paint a house in 35 mph winds and (of course) the
overspray got onto some recently installed solar modules. They were using a
latex water-based exterior paint. Are there any mild solvents you might
recommend to help clean this up? Or just elbow grease?

Thanks!

[RE-wrenches] Razors & Removing paint from solar modules

2022-04-15 Thread Dana Orzel via RE-wrenches
If your use a razor only use a fresh razor blades. The moment you feel burrs
stop & replace the razor as the burrs will scratch the glass. Also keep the
surface always wet with a soapy solution [surfactant] to keep the surface slick
& this extends the short life of a razors edge.

Use a razor handle to hold the blade & keep a first aid kit available. Soapy
water & razor blades have interesting incidents. I owned a window tint shop 40
years ago & definitely had my share of razor cuts.

Just a razor blade. I doubt you can take if off chemically.

I’ve had good results from a combo of power washing and the Magic Eraser for
paint dust in the texture of the glass.
