i like using gutters, it keeps it clean
you can just as easily put the gutter vertical on the side and use close
nipples…..

Re: [RE-wrenches] HOA’s in Southern California

2022-03-01 Thread Max Balchowsky
Hello all, I don’t post much anymore but I’m in the process of installing a
small (6.4) kw system on my condo, I started putting it in and went to the
city for a permit but the city told me they can’t give me a permit without
HOA approval. I’m well within the parameters I know they require, but I
didn’t get their permission. The way I read the more recent Solar Access
Laws there is no grounds for this. Does anyone have any recent experience
with this?

Ck the current “solar access” laws, I haven’t felt with that in years, but
when we did a lot of residential solar there were laws, at least in

Wrenches, For the most part we are using Chemlink M1 sealant for to seal our
rooftop penetrations. It hasn’t let us down yet. M1 is a available in several
opaque colors and grey is the most common. Sometimes we want a good quality
clear sealant to put around conduit fittings, where our conduit enters
buildings, etc. We used Geocell 2300 in the past and I don’t have anything bad
to say to it but our current supplier doesn’t carry Geocell products. More
recently we’ve tried Chemlink Clear sealant but I’ve already seen signs that it
doesn’t hold up well in the elements – it seems to peel off the surface it was
installed on and turn brown relatively fast. Does anyone have a good
multipurpose clear sealant that they like? Best, August

I'm sure he will use the SW until it dies. I would. Never thought of running AC
from the 24v side to the dual outbacks to charge the 48 V BB. Would need a xfmr
though right?I would install a separate Midnite CC for each battery bank. I
know the classics output 12v at the aux, so what type of relay could be used?
Does it need to be solid state ?I would feel better using some type of control,
or as was mentioned, maybe talk him into just hooking everything up to the OB
system at the house. The 24v side would be for occasional use only.

I usually would combine both buildings all into one system, KISS principle,

are getting really dated. Great inverter, but they don't last forever.  They
have excellent resell value on Ebay for folks that need replacements in dual

Having said that, Jerry's idea of 2 controllers on one array sounds like it
would work, but not with Blue Sky because of the grounding as Larry mentioned.

 Hi Jarmo,

I agree and recognize your urgency in making us aware of the proper use and
charging of Li-ion batteries as well as the dangers of mistreating them. As an
early adopter myself, I am very cautious in my approach even to the point of
refusing to sell to some customers. Lithium battery technology is in a state of
rapid evolution.

Not wanting to harp on the GBS brand that I sell, but one of your points goes
to prove the safety of their integrated approach. You said, ...all it takes is
one poor connection or broken temp sensor on one cell. The GBS EMS system has
cell level sensors for temperature (and other data) and each sensor board
requires constant communication with the CPU. If the EMS fails to communicate
any information with any cell, the CPU immediately shuts down both safety
solenoids, disconnecting the battery. With the non integrated systems, failures
that don't report information to the management system could lead to disaster.

Please keep offering us the knowledge you are gaining as I am a firm believer
that Lithium technology is a large part of the inevitable replacement the aged
lead battery.

Hi:

I may sound like I'm a detractor against using Lion, but that's not it.

What I want to bring to light is that, being as the technology is new, not all
the issues are known and there are things to learn for all early adopters in
the foreseeable future.

From what I can gather the framework for the issues lies in that Lion
technology is based on intercalation, that is, a reversible insertion and
removal of Li molecules into compounds with microscopically layered structures.
This predicates that there must be no chemical reaction in the battery, but
rather only the shelving of the highly reactive Li ions.  If there are any
chemical reactions taking place, then in the least the battery performance is
compromised and in the most there is a thermal event or worse

There are some very robust Lion battery packs, a favorite of mine being from a
local company from Vancouver, (well Richmond, which is a suburb of Vancouver).
It's a small company, but they have designed, developed, built and successfully
approved their 6 kWh Lion pack for use in large car ferries in Scandinavia.
The ferries have stacks of these packs in the 100's, in the MWh size.  It can
be done.

What I'm advocating is that its best to work with companies that have the
time, interest and resources to work through the wrinkles, and if not, then
carefully put in reliable and precise BMS circuitry which includes things like
fail safe circuits for single point failures of critical sensing circuits, the
foremost of which is cell temperature.  When you're pushing large currents, all
it takes is one poor connection or broken temp sensor on one cell..

Here's a link to the Lion battery pack manufacturer, Corvus,

 http://corvus-energy.com/

I know they do a good job, but they're not cheap, for now...

Re: [RE-wrenches] Backsheet Camo

2014-12-26 Thread Max Balchowsky
We've put hundreds of tilted arrays on flat roofs over years. Some cities
required screening to make it more ascetically pleasing. What we did under some
circumstances was put a metal mesh surrounding the tilted array attached to
the back and edges to put a siding on the structure to make it look better. We
found a couple companies in LA and San Bernardino that manufactured a metal
sheeting that was used for screen doors, it had 1/8 holes about 3/16 inch
apart, from the street it looked solid, but had plenty of venting to allow a
good circulation of air. It came in 4' x 8'or 4x10' sections. Max Balchowsky

Bill,

It would be nice if people cared more about the earth and less about the
perceived beauty of a roof with no solar visible.  Anyway, my concern is
wind loading on the 6 of array you have exposed.  Not sure if you get
high winds but that array may be up there for decades.

Unfortunately I don't have a quick fix suggestion but maybe another
wrench has been there/done that before.  I'm thinking something dark
that looks like the roof but redirects the wind from the North up and
over the top edge of your S facing array.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Load Side Tap

2014-09-13 Thread Max Balchowsky
Fellow wrenches, I've got an install that is a little different than any I've
done before. We are going to put an 18 Kw groundmount on the side of a hill
(nothing new so far).
The Array will be about 150 feet from a 200 amp MLO subpanel in the garage of a
guest house. Still nothing new. The sub panel is 500 ft from the 400 amp main
service. The 200 amp sub feed is 250 MCM. There is not much load on the 200 amp
sub panel. The twist on this one is this, there is a pull box in the vicinity
of the proposed array location. It contains the feed from the House Main (250
MCM) It simply loops thru the box, I'm sure because of the length of the run.
We are 400 feet from the main 400 amp panel and about 100 ft from the 200 amp
sub panel. My thoughts are to tap the 250 MCM in the pull box to back feed the
subfeed to the Main. The other option is to pull wire from the pull box to the
sub panel and land a breaker for the 95 amp feed from the array. Any thoughts??

Most inspectors want to see a bond bushing following the array equiptment
ground wire all the way back to the panel. We bring it back to a gutter under
the equipment, then land it on a ground buss in the gutter. Everything else is
also grounded here… This lug is then grounded either to an existing ground rod

the EMT need to be bonded at EITHER end?

Some of our local inspectors are requiring bonding around all
concentric/eccentric knockouts, regardless of circuit voltage.

Friends:

Please help us settle a crew debate before we come to blows:  for circuits 250
volts and higher, do we need to bond EMT at both ends?  Or, if there is bonded
cabinet with a concentric on one end and a solid, bonded metal cabinet on the
other, do we need a bonding bushing on the concentric end?

I say a conduit needs to be bonded only on one end. My misguided employee says
both ends. Both cabinets are independently bonded.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Anyone know what this racking system is? The permit drawings say Unirac
with lag screws and Eco-Fasten flashings, which this pretty clearly
isn't. I'd never seen this before, and I imagine this wind resistance is
not quite the 140 mph that the installer claims it is. Of the ~250 wood
screws holding this system down into the roof, I think six of them
accidentally hit rafters.

Thanks!

Hi Bill,

That was my take up until recently. However, we’ve had lots of Enphase failures
with M190s and M210s (to Enphase’s credit, no failures yet with M215s and
M250s) so I’m hesitant to put more and more micros up on the roof. Plus, the
price starts to beat micros around a system size of 4+ kW. We’re seeing a lot
of competitors offer Solar Edge in the Bay Area including Solar City so there
must be some good reasons to use them. In my mind, reliability is of utmost
importance and I don’t have any firsthand knowledge on how the Solar Edge
systems are working. I think they’ve only been in the US for about 3 years.

problems with these failing in a big storm?    With solar panel frames not
being square it is nice to have a little extra to grab - I am always curious as
to why these clips are made with such a small area to hold the panels down.

All feedback on these clips is appreciated.

The only complaint with the Snapnrack rails is the thin wall can easily be

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solar Carport on a Parking Ramp

2014-02-05 Thread Max Balchowsky
Hi Karl, check with the Contractor that installed the parking structure if
thats possible. What you do will be determined by what type of construction was
used to build the structure, the carport manufacturer will want input, and they
will have engineering staff to advise you, you'll need to know if it is  Post
Tension,  Cast-in-Place Concrete, Precast Concrete or Steel Framed construction.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Sealing roof vent

2013-10-03 Thread Max Balchowsky
Are you talking plumbing vent or attic vent? Either can be moved, but we have
simply cut plumbing vents to be under the array where the jurisdiction will
allow. I wouldn't seal a plumbing vent.
Attic vents we lower and sceen to keep critters out but still allow venting.

Hello Wrenches,

We are moving a roof vent. My plumber suggested that we cut the old one
and cap it instead of having to repair the roof. I'm not sure a capped
vent would be short enough to fit under the array.

What if we were to cut the vent off at the flashing level and plug the
pipe. A rubber plug could be put in and topped with hydraulic water-stop
cement. Neoprene roof sealant could be spread on top of that.

Has anyone tried anything like that? Are there any other good options?
Can you see any issues with this method?

Thanks,

what would wrenches do for church/school installations in respect to

One person champions the federal tax incentive?
A corporation/congregation owns the proposed system?
Each member of congregation owns a module?

Is there any way to have tax/production incentives at a church?

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Feeding 160A 3PH to a 800A/800A Main Service

Dear Fellow Wrenches,

We have a small 50kW 120/208V commercial job with five 9kW 3PH inverters, each
outputting max. 25A.  We are landing those into a dedicated load center with
five 40A breakers. Doing the math, 5 x 25A x 1.25 = 156.25A, we would need a
160A breaker.  This also equals to the maximum we can backfeed into a 800A/800A
Main Service on the load side according to the 120% rule.

The problem now is that we cannot locate any kind of 160A breaker or even a
160A fuse for a AC disconnect.

Has anybody ever done this without doing a line-side tap? It is hard to
believe that there wouldn't be an existing solution to landing maximum PV into
a 800A service. Are we missing something?

Any good ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Pekka Laine

Re: [RE-wrenches] KAIC Rating

2013-06-14 Thread Max Balchowsky

I'm looking for information for plan check at LADWP. I'm installing a Solecria
60Kw inverter and feeding into a 90 amp breaker in an existing 800 amp Main
Service Stand up section.
The Fault current available at the service connection point is 42,500 KAIC. I
need to know the rating of the Solectria Inverter connection point, which is
the 3 pole AC Disconnect, which is an Eaton Disc. If I use a Fusible Disc at
the inverter and fuse it at 90 amp, then I'll need 4/0 wire between the Breaker
at the service panel and the Disc on the inverter, this wire size will allow a
lot of the fault current thru, therefore the rating at the Disc. needs to be
adequate. I can't find anything in the tech specs for the inverter.

I'm installing 35' of

Re: [RE-wrenches] PV on Mission Tile

2013-06-07 Thread Max Balchowsky
Jason, what we've done many tines on these types of roofs is had the homeowner
work with a roofer of their choice, or we would supply one, to remove the tile
on the area where the array will be. then they put down a hot mop or suitable
roofing material and we install the racking and array over it. The roofer then
comes back and installs the tile up to the edge of the array. This provides
them with a very clean looking install that looks integrated into the tile
roof. If they don't want to do that we usually use Prosolar tile track, or
something similar, removing the spots where the penetration is located,
drilling the tile for the riser and replacing it over the top of the riser.
Prosolar has a nice demo of this procedure on their website.

The only complaint with the Snapnrack rails is the thin wall can easily be

Re: [RE-wrenches] Cleaning Modules

2013-04-18 Thread Max Balchowsky
I cleaned my system in Palm Springs with rain-ex every 4 months. It did a great
job and left a coating that keep the dust from sticking to the modules
I probably didn't need to clean it that often, but it was easily accessible. I
put a garden sprayer on a hose to coat the panels after I cleaned them using
a dust mop on an extension handle to remove any dirt. Each time they needed
less cleaning. Rain-ex keeps the dirt from sticking.

Corey,
If rain water isn't doing good enough, which it usually does depending on angle
and other factors…..

-pick up a window washing squeegee (like at a gas station) that you can add a
longer, maybe telescopic handle.  That works great.
-Just use water, it works fine.  There is no need for additional chemicals or
cleaners.  If bird crap or dirt is particularly stubborn just wet it, scrub it,
wet it again and let it soak a few minutes, then it should wipe right off.
Keep in mind most module mfgrs recommend nothing more than a mild detergent
added to water (read the specific module instructions).
-Be wary of temp differences between water and module glass.  Cold water on hot
glass can cause the glass to crack.  Best to wash in the morning before the
glass heats up.

I've seen a few module washing products (automatic sprayers) advertised, but
have no first hand experience with any.

Good luck,
benn

I don't know your exact application, but I've used Carlon wireways for years.
Our application most of the time was to use the 4x4 gutter in lieu of metal

I'm looking for flat roof cable tray system that is cost effective. We
previously used Cablofil and Cablo-port FSL 12 tray but it is very expensive
for our current application due to the size of the roof. We need to install
about 200' of tray and Cablofil galvanized is eating up the budget. Can anyone
recommend a cheaper alternative.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Metal shingles

2013-03-21 Thread Max Balchowsky
We've installed 3 metal roof systems over the years and we used the pro solar
tile track. Now Prosolar has the small flashing to seal the all thread
penetrations. You might ask them about that application for a metal roof.
The problem we encountered was maneuvering on the metal, in some ways it was
more troublesome than the spanish tile

How is this roof type for flashing?  Do you just cut it with a tin snips?  My

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Metal shingles

Hello,

I looked at a site today and the roofing was a brand of
metal shingle. This was just a quick drive by and check
out the site so I don't have access to the brand or
method of attachment.

It still got me thinking, what are people doing for
attachments to roofing like this?  6/12 pitch, and from
the photos the client sent me, the structure is 2X6
truss running N-S, with 1x4 strapping every 4' running
E-W along with 5/8 OSB on top of the strapping.  The
trusses look to be on 4' centers (just judging by the
photo).

The only thing I can think of is EJOT type fasteners
through the shingle into the truss. The shingles would
crush a little bit, but the OSB would support it pretty
well.  Otherwise removing the shingles where the feet
would go and then.

As always thanks for all the help.

Glenn/Jason,
So you wouldn't use romex to feed an exterior outlet on an outside wall, or to
any outside lights???

Canadian Electrical Code's (CE Code) definitions…
wet location -a location in which liquids may drip, splash, or flow on or
against electrical equipment.
Damp location –an exterior or interior location that is normally or
periodically subject to condensation of moisture in, on, or, adjacent to
electrical equipment an includes partially protected locations under canopies,
parquees, roofed open porches, and similar locations.
Dry location –a location not normally subject to dampness, but that may include
a location subject to temporary dampness as in the case of a building under
construction, provided that ventilation is adequate to prevent an accumulation
of moisture.

If inside your attic is considered a wet location, then you have other
issues.  Are you sure the NEC's definition of 'wet location' is relating to the
location of the romex?
I just spoke to one of my inspectors and he sees no issue with entering the
bottom of a soladeck with romex.

On the grounding/bonding, I have been using the bare wire in the romex for the
enphase system ground (within the enphase cable) and running a #6 from the mod
frames and rails into the soladeck and along side the romex back to the
panelboard.

I need to get myself a copy of your NEC so I can be on the same page as you
guys.  I hear it is written in a way that is much easier to interpret than the
CE Code, which is written in a very legal jargon.

This would force you to use the proposed jbox in the attic for the transition

I also understood that you could combine the EGC and GEC into a single
conductor as long as it is continuous or irreversibly spliced, as part of the
’08 code.

We are considering using Romex in the attic for the first time. My plan was to
use the new Enphase coupler to connect the trunk cable to Type TC-ER, enter a
Soladeck passthrough box on the roof into a junction box in the attic where I
would make the transition to 10/3 Romex. I'm hung up on the GEC going back to
the service panel. Any suggestions?

By the way, we are on NEC 2008, and in most cases there is also a requirement
for an additional grounding electrode per NEC 690.47(D) (that shouldn't really
relate to my issue).

Re: [RE-wrenches] tile roof solutions

2012-07-06 Thread Max Balchowsky
We've used the ProSolar tile track over the years and it has worked well. I've
installed hundreds of systems in the Coachella Valley in the Palm Springs area
of Southern California. Many of the roofs are S-Tile. This tile is very fragile
and you need to expect to crack tiles that will need to be replaced. We drill
the S-Tile and replace it over the all-thread standoff, sealing the penetration
with one of the many solutions on the market. Another method we've used with
success is to remove the tiles under the area of the array and have a roofer
put down a layer of roll out roofing material, then we replace tiles up to the
edge of the array, it gives the array a integrated look, but adds a little to
the overall cost.

Re: [RE-wrenches] L feet no flashing in shingle roof

2012-07-02 Thread Max Balchowsky
In the early days before a lot of the manufactured mounting systems became
prominent we used a stainless rod hanger. it was 6 inches long with 4 in of lag
and 2 inches of thread. we'd put on a fender washer and bolt, filled the hole
with a product called through the roof - a fifty year sealant. We had used
power strut for years as a commercial electrical contractor so we'd put strut
between two stainless bolts and washers then use a custom t-clamp with bolt and
a spring nut. There were no flashings, just a good seal under the washer. I've
got dozens of systems installed like that, years old. No leaks. The important
thing was hitting the rafter in the center and getting good torque on the bolt.
I've come in behind other contractors over the years to fix leaks and more
often than not they missed the rafter or were on the edge so it eventually
became loose.

I've found that the Flashed
L-Foot connection costs about $0.10/w on a typical residential system,

using the slotted holes in a typical L-Foot. We need a lot of attachments
for 172 mph design wind speeds around here. Flashings at $500 for a 5kW
seems high, especially now as the percentage of the system price
increases. That being said, I would install L-Foot flashings on my own
roof - no exceptions.

On the other hand, I've seen sealed lag screw connections work with solar
pool heating systems for decades without indication of problems. A
variety of sealants were used in the old days but most
recently Sikaflex 1A (which incidentally is not indicated for asphaltic
roofs) and Geocell 2300 have worked great.

I'm quoting a job that has an existing array with L feet bolted down
to a shingle roof with no flashings.  I want to match the height of
the existing array.  Also some modules are being worked in around
skylights where it is unlikely that room would be available for flashings
to center over rafters.

I've always used flashings.  Would it be completely crazy to
follow suit of the existing array and bolt L feet straight to the shingle
roof with good roof sealant?  If so, how would you seal it?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Underwater wire

2011-06-10 Thread Max Balchowsky
Kris, I worked traffic signal systems for years, we spliced conductors in pull
boxes that fill with water on a regular regular basis. There are products
available that are rated for waterproofing connections and the THWN-2 is rated
for wet locations, but I don't know about submersed locations.

 Kris,
I don't know a Code-compliant solution, having not faced this. But I'll
suggest that you not attempt to glue and seal conduit to keep the
conductors
dry, as it won't work permanently. Use wet-rated wire, expecting any
conduit
to provide only physical protection. THWN is wet-rated - that's the W. You
might consider submersible pump cable also.

Kirk, we put a 4x4 gutter under the equipment (inverters, disconnects, AC and
DC, if not using an Inverter with the DC disc integrated)
it looks neater and then you tie wrap the DC together And AC together in the
gutter. 3/4 inch conduit risers to the equipment from the gutter and you have a
neat looking install that meets code. If the gutter can extend under the
service panel it works even better (out the back of the gutter into the wall

up into the service panel) If you want pictures, e-mail me direct...

Kirk,

Just zip tie your DC stuff together and your AC stuff together and keep the
two bundles separate. Then they can be in the same trough. At least that's
the way we do it. I don't know about in the same conduit, I'd guess no.

2008 NEC states that:

(B) Conductors of Different Systems. Photovoltaic source circuits and
photovoltaic output circuits shall not be contained in the same raceway,
cable tray, cable, outlet box, junction box, or similar fitting as feeders
or branch circuits of other systems, unless the conductors of the different
systems are separated by a partition or are connected together.

Can anyone describe and give an example of what connected together means
to inverter PV circuits in the same conduit as a branch (load) circuit?

I have a single existing PVC conduit to a barn with an AC load subpanel. I
want to run the output conductors of an inverter combiner panel in the barn
through the same conduit to get to be main building. The fill / derating
calcs work to do this. The inspector says I have to run a new conduit for
the AC inverter combiner because the subpanel feeder and the combiner output
conductors are not connected. But they are both connected to the main
building panel. Any insight will be appreciated. Thanks. I've also been told
that the NEC 2011 comments on 690.4 (B) clarify this. Can anyone comment?
Obviously I am not mixing DC and AC conductors.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Arc flash concerns

2010-09-01 Thread Max Balchowsky
Jeff, excellent advice. Even seasoned electricians are negligent in this area.
We've done lots of large commercial electrical installations over the years and
a rule that was strictly enforced over the years in our shop was to stand to
the
side and look to the side when operating breakers. On the larger breakers we
stand to the side and use a 2x4. On one occasion a few years ago we had a 2000
amp breaker in a stand up panel blow when energized. Had the electrician been
standing in front of the breaker he would have no doubt died.

Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] Arc flash concerns

First, I am not talking about NEC requirements for arc fault circuit breakers
in bedrooms!

I hope those on the list who are licensed electricians are very familiar with
the safety issues of an arc flash but I have run into many pv installers who
do not have a clue, and believe as long as the breaker they are working on is
disconnected there is no danger when working with the panel energized. This is
a VERY dangerous problem and it can happen on brand new or old electrical
switchgear. An arc flash starts with something across the buss bars of a
breaker panel or from a buss to ground. What is hard to understand is this is
not a true short circuit and will NOT trip any circuit breaker.

This makes it very dangerous when working on any energized panel. It starts
with any small or poor conductor across the phases or buss bars. This could be
anything from a fine wire, a dead lizard, rust falling off the interior when
you
slam the door closed, filings from drilling a hole in the panel side, or even
removing or installing a new or old circuit breaker even if it is not connected
to any load. This is just enough contact to allow an arc to form, and as soon
as the arc forms it goes into melt down which produces 35,000 degree
temperatures and blows plasma of vaporized copper out the front of the
enclosure. Having been near one I can tell you the sound is like holding a 12
ga. shot gun next to your ear.

Starting in 2004 the NEC started requiring arc flash studies and labeling on
all
electrical panels in all non-residential facilities. Most likely if you run
into one of these panels there will be a label on the door saying the arch
flash safe distance rating of this panel is 6 feet and indicate that arc
flash
protective clothing must used before touching this panel. Any commercial
building owner who does not comply with these new regulations can face criminal
prosecution if somebody gets fried. The safe way to approach any circuit
breaker panel is to stand to the hinge side of the door as you open it, and not
stand directly in front as most people do. This will deflect the high
temperature plasma away from your face if it happens.

Here are several short YouTube videos, one of a security camera view of two
licensed electricians doing normal maintenance on new switchgear. One guy is
standing in front of a new large circuit breaker that he is cranking into
position. Later analysis indicated one of the rear pins was bent, and as he
cranked he was deforming it sideways towards the ground buss. This new breaker
was not connected to any load. Let me say that again, there was no load and no
current passing through this circuit breaker.

Since an arc has resistance, it allows enough amps to maintain the arc, but not
enough amps to trip the breakers, which is why this will continue to burn and
not trip anything. Also, this may cascade back through multiple sub-panels as
their can be enough impedance in a long cable between a main and sub panel to
hold down the amps below the trip rating of the next breaker up the line.

Regardless of what you hear, this is not just a high voltage issue, and
definitely is a concern down to 208 volts AC which puts it into the normal
range
of a residential 120/240 VAC main panel. If you are adding or removing a
breaker in an existing panel to connect a new inverter, please make sure the
panel is de-energized and wear approved arc flash gear!

2010-08-25 Thread Max Balchowsky
Mick, here in California the fire department in the various agencies has the
final say on clearances. There is a very clear cut standard in place for the
state, but we have been successful a few times in getting allowances to vary
due
to various site conditions. A call to the local AHJ is the place to start. In
the early days of our installations (mid 1990's) we used power strut and bolted
panels directly to the rails. A lot slower but no gaps between panels. We went
from there to designing our own T clamps. There wasn't as many choices then
for mounting hardware.

Hi Mick,

To answer part of your post, the DPW Power Rail mid-clamps give you a 3/8” gap

Hello, Team~

I'm laying out some Sanyo modules on paper. Twelve of them fit the roof with
almost too much perfection: this would be difficult to install as it would fill
the roof edge to edge in both directions. Are there consistent guidelines
about the amount of roof edge which must remain uncluttered or is this mainly
driven by the amount of aggravation that the installer is willing to tolerate?
Which organizations would want to influence such decisions in the Atlanta
region? Details are: residential, new construction, wooden truss type roof
framing, finish roofing yet to be decided.

I've seen fancy photos of rooftops which are covered edge to edge, but I
suppose
those are building integrated PV systems instead of discrete modules mounted
above the roofing material. Who decides if those are OK' for no walkways
compared to a roof that is fully loaded with Sanyo type modules? How are such
decisions made?

I like the top clamp style mounts but UniRac SolarMount rail systems need
about a 1 gap from one module to the next. Is there anyone with similar
hardware that can get a grip within a smaller gap?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Best practices for mounting on cedar shake roof?

2010-07-14 Thread Max Balchowsky
I love that idea. We've been using the prosolar 3.5 in standoffs and the Oatley
flashing on comp shingles, then then roofing up to the array with tile, or
shake, or what ever the existing roof was, But the standing seam would give the
array a much lower profile. In the early days before all the fancy mounting
hardware we used power strut a rod hangers to keep a low profile. We'd been
using it for years on commercial roofs to hold a myriad of equipment. we
just finished a system in a very large So Cal HOA that has, and requires shake
to be used on any re roof. I'm going to use standing seam and the S-5 clamps on
the next one. Thanks

We have integrated a standing seam roof under the array area with the shake as
a

Subject: [RE-wrenches] required inverter and system testing

 Esteemed Wrenches,

I'm in the process of bidding a small government job. They're requiring the
following tests. I was wondering if any of you have ever run across this
before and if so how you went about it.

- Inspect inverters according to requirements in NETA Acceptance
Testing
Specifications.

- Test the PV system under prime solar design conditions to validate
system
power performance rating.Use instruments calibrated within the
previous six
months according to NIST standards. (not easy since the site they've chosen
will shade some of the array all the time. I should be able to just explain
this to them)

- Simulate malfunctions, including ground faults, to verify protective
device
operation. (I would create a GF and then replace the fuse for this test)

- Test anti-islanding shutdown function due to normal utility source
failure,
time delay and automatic restart after utility power restoration. (this is an
easy one)

- Test and record the total harmonic distortion (THD) content of
output
current at 25, 50, and 100 percent of system rating. Comply with IEEE 519
at MDP point of connection.

- Test and record the real power output for each inverter, and total
 power
delivered at the grid tie connection, for a 24 hour period. The continuous
power output during prime solar conditions shall meet or
exceed
performance requirement under part I of this specification.

- For each inverter, record DC input voltage for 24 hours, to
demonstrate
affects of maximum power point tracking (MPPT), voltage regulation within
inverter rated limits, and affect of partial shading on solar
modules.
Simulate partial shading by covering 50% of modules during prime
solar
conditions.

- Record of Tests and Inspections:Prepare and submit documentation
of tests and
inspections, including references to manufacturers' written instructions
and other test
and inspection criteria. Include results of tests, inspections, and retests.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted and appreciated!

Wow, this could be a hairball. Needless to say, we've all probably already done
this, more than a few times. Butas a former carpenter though claiming no
expert truss knowledge, my sense is that the top chord of the trusses should be
in compression. Therefore, a 3/8 diameter lag, for instance, would substitute
steel for wood in compression, not a bad move. The trusses should be very well
braced laterally by the roof deck. I don't see the problem.

Is the new roofing material being applied over existing roofing, applying
additional load? Are there circumstances that make this a special truss
application, cantilevers, slate roofing, etc.?

It would be interesting to talk directly with the manufacturer, to get their
entire scoop on the project. It may be an overly-cautious approach to liability
concerns. If starting from scratch, the truss manufacturer should be able to
design for whatever the application requires. Sistering boards to their trusses
might easily freak them out as well. Ask them what they would suggest. There are
lots of truss manufacturers if this one can't handle the job.

The truss manufacturer said there were problems with weakening the

Does this seem like a potential issue? Is there any data on this?

This thread brings up a very timely issue that I’m dealing with right now with
PV Power Purchase Providers. As an integrator providing turnkey PV systems of
X kW, I’m being asked to contractually agree to a minimum performance warranty
for said PV systems. I am EXTREMELY uncomfortable to any such clause in any
contract that I would sign. I have strong confidence in my PV design
capabilities and engineering support and in my professional crew to install a
top-quality PV system. I have a lot less confidence in an inverter
manufacturer being able to get to a site on a Hawaiian island in the middle of
the Pacific in a super timely fashion as the lost PVkWhs rack up. And as I
mentioned in a previous post today, we have an active volcano here that’s been
spewing since 1983, a volcano that could get a lot worse on any given day. I’m
leaning strongly against agreeing to any such clause. Way too bad a precedent
to set. Way too much of a liability.

Anyone else had to deal with this bugger of a performance warranty demand?

In response to this: Luckily the latest inverters from most manufacturers take
care of this need with their included/integrated but seperated fused DC
disconnects.

I actually wish the integrated disconnects for the new inverters were an option
when purchasing, i.e. when I order the inverter it comes with it automatically,
and is therefore reflected in the price. Where I live the AHJ and utlities are
requiring the handled-lockable-'regular' AC and DC disconnects regardless of
whether or not there is a UL-listed integrated disconnect with the inverter.
Alas, for me it is redundancy and extra cost for materials and electrical work
either way. I can either have the electrician wire it up and pay their cost, or
I can leave the integrated inverter out (when it is listed as optional in the
installation manual) but now I have a non-returnable part sitting around, which
is wasteful too. Alas, the best solution is more solar so everyone becomes more
familiar with it!

Made in Camarillo, CA, near the Solar World plant.
Dual MPPT inputs
90 to 500 VDC input window.
Transformerless (or balanced, as we would say in broadcasting) inputs
Nema 4 case.
Up to 97% efficient

I am particularly intrigued with the Transformerless input. This, IMHO is a
much safer scheme. Prior to a ground fault, no polarity is referenced to
ground, reducing shock hazard significantly. Any ground fault only
references one side of the circuit to the racking and metallic structures.

I'd like to know more.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Rooftop wiring methods between multiple subarrays

2009-10-14 Thread Max Balchowsky
Bill, as you know, if the array is on a tilted roof (tile track bkts or fast
jacks) and the array is monolithic, all the wires go directly from under the
panels to the junction box ( I mis-spoke when I said Combiner box, I too don't
see the need for combiner boxes on residential systems ).We go directly from
the weeb ground lug into the junction box then down. The panels are bonded to
the rails with the Weeb Bonding Clips. If the array consists of tilted rows,
we've used either a bare copper wire tie wrapped to the EMT between rows or run
in the EMT (most rows are 18-24 apart depending on angle). What I've done on
the last couple of tilted row residential jobs is used the mineralac clamps and
EMT between rows (inspector has bought it as a bond between rows then used
the ground lug on the last row to take the ground into the junction box and
down..

Max,

I’m not sure I understand your scenario completely. The
WEEB-Lug, superior to the ILSCO product, is intended for grounding the rack to
the equipment grounding conductor. Each rail gets a WEEB-Lug and an EGC ties all
those rails together and takes the ground to the j-box to enter the conduit
system (don’t like combiner boxes on residential rooftops). The key is how to
effectively bond metal conduit. Bonding bushings or box fittings are the only
means I know of to do this. As others have pointed out, the bushings currently
on the market are often not designed for outdoor use. This is particularly of
concern in high corrosion areas (where EMT is not recommended).

My experience is that it is better to bond with indoor lugs than
not to bond at all. When I check old lugs in the field with cad-plated set
screws, they often still have a good bond even though the screw is fully
rusted. The key is the bond between the conductor and the lug, and the between
the lug and the metal it is attached to. If both surfaces are tight and no
oxygen is getting to the interfaces, the bond will stay for a very long
time—possibly
the life of the system in a lower corrosion environment. The set screw is
mechanical pressure, not the bonding point—rust locks it.. It is best to use
outdoor-rated equipment, but in some cases, it may be impossible because the
equipment may not be manufactured, since the market is too small. Oh the joys
of exterior wiring.

Bill.

August and Max,

If all you are doing in supporting the conductors, PVC conduit
is sufficient with protective bushings on each end. Once you go to EMT, then
grounding
bushings must be installed at both ends and the EGC needs to pick up those
bushings. More expensive and time consuming, but it looks better and you can
span a greater distance.

How about using a water pipe clamps on the
EMT. A bare copper, # 6 or larger, should be able to be run outside
the conduit, as it is a bond between sub arrays. My reading is
that, from the combiner box on, an equipment grounding conductor
would need to be inside the conduit.

[RE-wrenches] Inverter Phasing on a single phase system

2009-10-09 Thread Max Balchowsky
I have a question on inverter phasing. By that, I mean connecting multiple
240 volt inverters to a common single phase sub panel or service panel and the
need (or not) of making sure that L1 -L2 correspond on each inverter to the L1
- L2 buss bar in the panel. I recall issues in the early days with the SMA
2500's and the need to phase the inverter ac outputs so that the L1 - L2 was
the same with all the inverters. I have a Sunpower system with multiple 5200's
that is reportedly back feeding half of what was expected, even though the
production numbers on the inverter are showing full expected production. I
haven't examined the site yet.

You can get metal NEMA 4 and NEMA 12, gasket sealed boxes made by Hoffman.
There should be no deformation issues. The only possible issue could be the
temperature of the gasket, but it would be held in place by the clamped cover.
Have the gaskets had an issue with the deformed PVC boxes?

We use pre-packaged systems when working with out of state electricians. We
have used SunWize kits in these cases and have been happy with them. Good
engineering design, solid components and good documentation/manual.

For our own local installs we find that working with individual components

For flat concrete tile and S-tile, we like the ProSolar Tile Track
product. It takes some time to install, however, the resulting penetration
(the annular ring gap between the hole on the concrete tile and the SS
all-thread is about 1/16 inch (worst case 1/8). The all-thread does a good
job of securing the tile in place.

I know that this has most likely been discussed previously on this forum,
but I am having difficulties with the sites search engine and finding any
results.

I am curious what is everyone's preferred method or product of choice is for
anchoring / attaching a racking system (UniRac or others) to a Flat Concrete
tile or Spanish tile style roof, New Construction versus Retro fit.

Does anyone have any experience with Creotec's AluTec tile hooks, or
equivalent?

I am trying to get an idea of what is out there, what most installers
prefer, what the pros and cons may be (does the tile have to be cut or not,
are they a pain to work with, etc...)

Not looking for a super detailed response, but a nudge in the right
direction would be appreciated. I know this seems odd, being employed by a
concrete tile manufacture and all, but up to this point it has not come up
with standard panels.

 Hey Mick,

We used a lot of SSRs in wind turbine controls. Found them to be
extremely reliable. Overrating the device is a very good idea. Also
be careful of very low temperatures, as the Current Transfer Ratio
(CTR) of the optical isolation can degrade over time and eventually
cause failure to operate at very low temperatures. When used within
their ratings, they are extremely robust and reliable with a long
lifetime.

Opto22.com is a very good resource.

Hello, Wrenchers and special greetings to the silicon
gurus to whom I address these questions about solid state relays.

A client wants a gizmo to connect grid AC In to their
inverter/charger when the battery voltage is low...resembling the LBX
function on the good ol' Trace SW inverter. The grid power would feed
into a 120/240 Magnum inverter/charger which is rated for 30 amps pass
through on each hot leg.

I may use a solid state relay for the heavy lifting: double-pole,
single-throw, normally open...with DC for the control voltage. Using a
voltage controlled switch, I'll send battery DC to the SSR when the
battery voltage goes too low for too long; then I'll remove that DC
trigger when the battery voltage recovers.

Question 1: Are SSR's suitable for the variety of loads (including
motors) that this circuit might carry?

Question 2: Should the SSR be massively over-rated relative to the
expected load (as with typical electronic design practice)?

McMaster-Carr stocks solid state relays with built in heat sinks; model
7456K43 is published for 30 amps @ 230 volts AC. If protected with a 30
amp double-pole breaker, would this relay suffice long term or would it
instead produce expensive smoke? (Let's assume free air conditions
around the heat sink and a 90 degree F ambient temperature.)

Question 3: Should I instead bump up to model 7456K44 with a 50 amp
rating for this 30 amp pass through situation?

I like the idea of no moving parts/no arcs/no clunks compared to a
mechanical power relay, but I also want no customer callbacks. High
speed switching (pulse width modulation) is not one of our
requirements, so...

Question 4: ...is it bad strategy to even consider using an SSR for
this application?

Thanks in advance,

Undoubtably many of us are getting interesting project requests as folks want
to sprinkle magic stimulus dust on things to make solar panels grow...

We have a project with a huge electrical load, pumping water for a medium sized
city. They want solar... great. Easy.

They had a power outage and kept running with 2.6 MW of diesel generators.
They are interested in solar's ability to do backup. I don't think that many
batteries will fit in my pickup truck, and I hate working with 300/0 wire.

QUESTION: (and maybe its an easy one and the SMA guys will say, sure, we did
that in Greece). Is it viable to set up a micro-grid in this scenario and run
an island-mode, with available solar reducing the genny plant demand? Should I
just say forget it or, at this MW scale, would the switchgear and effort be
practical?

Thanks.

If you are printing an image rather than
text to pdf, do a controlprint screen, open a new blank window in
acad and paste it in. You can then get whatever appears on the dwg file more or
less 1:1. It does not always give the sharpest images this way and colors
can shift but it does do some things acad won't.
Acad draws vector images instead of raster so they don't always blow

Greetings!  First off, thanks to Allan, Brian and Peter for your input on the
external disconnect signage - I won!  We're having a UV rated plastic sign made
right now.

I'm interested in hearing what company's policies are regarding filling a roof
with solar.  I have always advocated for a 2-3' perimeter around the array to
a) facilitate ease of installation, b) prevent excessive wind loading at the
roof edge, c) allow access for firefighters and d) I personally think it looks
better.  However, I've been getting a little pressure from the higher-ups to
let the designers place modules right up to the edge of the roof to increase
system size.  Their responses to my arguments are a) take all the necessary
precautions to keep the installers safe while installing at the roof edge, b)
install more attachments near the roof edge to strengthen the rack structure,
c) there is no requirement in our area for firefighter access and there will
always be access on the north-facing roof anyway and d) a roof full of PV looks
like a pile of money.

What is your policy on array size and why?

Hi Max,

I can't resist writing - Max is on the roof maxing out the roof. Now that I got
that out of my system, what we are seeing are increasingly restrictive rules
that limit how much PV a person can have. Granted, neighbors have the right to
protect themselves and their property from actual and potential dangers like
solar modules blowing off the roof or fires spreading from one house to
another. But do my neighbors' rights to protect include denying me the use of
my entire roof, or for that matter, anywhere on my property? Yes. Depending on
your local laws, you cannot stick your PV outside your property setbacks. You
cannot put your PV on above certain heights. You cannot put your PV up to your
roof ridge. You cannot fill your roof with PV. You cannot have ground-mounted
PV without taking measures to protect trespassers. And so on...

The same loss of freedom happened with other technologies (radio, automobiles,
airplanes, etc.) as they moved into the mainstream. So PV pioneers, enjoy your
success but add insurance, permit fees, legal fees, and other costs to your
cashflow budget.

Our policy on filling a roof with solar is dictated by the local fire marshall.
More and more they are gravitating toward the state standard (california) which
is 3' from the ridge and sides and 1 1/2 ft each side of the valleys. we've had
some exceptions but more and more we are finding them sticking to the state
standard.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Personal project: roofing colors

2008-09-24 Thread Max Balchowsky
William, the 6 years I spent in he Palm Springs area gave me a lot of exposure
to what works and what doesn't as far as roofing material. The longest lasting
and best insulators were standing seam metal and vinyl covered foam. A white
rooffing material made an incredible difference in tempretures. A roof that was
untouchable with gray crushed rock was very comfortable to the touch after
being painted white.

I have an energy question on a personal project. We are adding two rooms
to our house and it is time to select roofing colors. Nothing will match
the weird comp shingles already on our roof, so we are going to not match
and re-roof the rest of the house later. In the meantime, I need to pick a
shingle color. How much difference does a lighter roof color make here in
our inland California (Mediterranean) climate? We get over 100F frequently
in the summer.

Thanks for your insight.

Re: [RE-wrenches] offgrid system question

2008-08-19 Thread Max Balchowsky
You're right Mick, It is an XW 6048, there's only one and I really think I'm
going to find that the biggest problem is that there is not enough inverter
capacity capacity with just one unit (the scematic shows a 60 amp breaker on
the output). The system is new ( installed within the last 4 months and the
batteries were new) The AC unit is 240 volt.

Mick says: you didn't mention what brand of inverter is on board the system,
but in any case there's probably an error code that you can find to explain the
shutdown. The error could be due to the low voltage disconnnect point being
reached on the battery, or it could be due to excessive AC amperage demand from
the air conditioner...the latter case seems quite likely because of the 3.5 ton
thing, but even if you address that part of the problem there still may be
nuisance shutdown problems if there are battery health issues going on.

You mentioned MPPT60-150 as the charge controller. From that, I assume Xantrex
XW...and one might assume the inverter is from that same product line. They
build two 48 volt units...I'll bet if there's an XW inverter in the system that
it's probably model 6048...6 kW continuous with a 12 kW surge. Please confirm.

I have a client who tried running (two different) 5 ton air conditioners using
XW 6048 based gear. He didn't even try with a single but he found that
inverter doubles succeeded with one of his refrigerated air systems and not
with the other one. The difference was due to a different SEER rating. He added
a third inverter/charger and now has plenty of cranking power for either air
conditioner.

My big concern now is the grinding effect that such an intense load has on his
battery bank, but I digress...if there's XW gear involved in your problem
child system, throw another inverter at the load but watch the battery for
signs of puckering.

If you do stack a second XW machine, there is some setup involved in naming the
two units and in setting one up as the slave.
