[RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-14 Thread Hilton Dier, III
If it were me, I'd buy a case of Red Head A7 anchoring adhesive:
https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0228790

Get an engineer to do the static load calculations and design the
attachment disk and bolt pattern. Weld a big disk with holes around the
edge and gussets to the bottom of your pole. Drill however many holes of
whatever size the eng says into the rock and put in some B-type threaded
rod with the A7. Washers and nuts above and below the disk to level it.
Pack underneath it with concrete if you want.

Granite is a great base if it is flat and solid.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-14 Thread Dana
The last time I looked at an engineered ballasted on the ground type of mount:

90 MPH micro burst/120 MPH winds came in at 18 # of ballast per sqft of module
on a 38 deg rack with the leading edge at 3’ AFG. This was simple on flat
ground.

Back to the rock situation:

I would suspect drilling rebar at opposing angles and creating a concrete pad
with a rebar cage on a rock out-cropping would be a very stable platform
depending on access to the location. I have hired a concrete pump trailer to
overcome the 150’ distance from truck access to the array location.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-12 Thread William Miller
Aaron:

I recommend you consider a ballasted system. We have installed them on the
ground to good effect. We grade a gravel surface to provide a level pad.
With soil underneath we bound the area with railroad ties or similar,
pegged into the soil to keep the gravel together. On your rock surface, a
compacted road base should suffice. Wind conditions should be considered
but these systems are engineered with that consideration in mind.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-12 Thread Ray
We've welded a flanged plate to the bottom of the pole and then set
epoxy anchor bolts into the rock.  Another option we've tried is drill a
8" hole into the rock to get the base of the pole a foot down into the
rock and then poured a reinforced block of concrete on top of the rock.
smaller holes were drilled into the surrounding rock to attach the
concrete to the rock as well.

Ballasted systems could be an option, as well as low profile racking
with multiple anchor points.  Not fun but it can be done.

No, engineering is easy. If it is unbroken it should be at least as
strong as concrete. The epoxy in anchors will work. If the rock is not
perfectly level you can do a thin concrete pad on top of the rock to
make a flat spot to bolt to. Drill the anchors through the concrete
leveling pad and into the rock.

I love anchoring to rock. It's free and not going anywhere!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-12 Thread Bill Hennessy
Hi Aaron--
In high strength concrete, we've used red head trubolt wedge anchors, with 1/2"
plate (6x6), four anchors/plate, with the posts welded to the plate. This setup
passed engineering muster. The anchors were 3/4" by 4-3/4".
The racking posts were a tripod of 4x6 stock welded to a pipe that would tilt
the racking. A few years later, 90 mph winds sheared the pins that pinned the
racking  to the post assembly. A few cracked modules, but the wedge anchors
held just fine.

We've used a Bosch spline drive drill over the years (11265EVS, about $600) and
have been pleased with it. You can rent it or its big Makita cousin (HR5000)
since your drilling down. The hammer drills are also sold in a sds version, but
I've been old school. If you're not doing a lot of concrete rock work, I'd
suggest buy a new bit and rent the drill. SDS bits cost a little less than
splines and the 3/4" prices range from $25 to $50.

Hi all,
I have a customer that requires a mounting option I have yet to encounter.  His
site sits on top of of a massive hill of granite.  It is relatively flat.  Are
there any mounting options that could work here?  We are only talking about
(12) to (16) modules for an off grid array.  Is there anything that can bolt to
rock?  I typically use dpw or Mt solar pole mounts but can't imagine how these
options could work.  Any thoughts?

On a roof ground mount you just need four holes the front one should be
relatively level if you have to shim them with concrete or something or even
steel plates that would work

The rears are adjustable legs so it’s no issue

Look at DPW roof ground mount you’ll see what I mean

I'm pretty sure Unirac has a flange base that is designed to attached to
the bottom of a threaded pipe as part of their ULA rack that can be used to
mount directly to rock.

Hi Aaron,

Granite is a great substrate to mount to (once it's done). You could weld a
large flange plate onto the bottom of your pole, and bolt it to the granite
using anchor bolts. Rock climbers (including myself) drill into granite all
of the time. Bosch, among others, has a great drill and bit setup that
works well. Glue in epoxies are a great way to keep moisture out of the
hole for many years.

Ballast racks are available too but it seems like a shame not to attach to
the granite in some way.

Good luck

There are a few ballast roof mount companies that promote their racking for
ballast ground mount options. You may want to explore some of those.

If you could get a well driller with a sense of humor you could put a hole in
that you could mount a pole the other option is use a DPW ground mount and
drill and anchor it in the four spots where is the feet sit

Bob ellison

But you will have to run ground wire to someplace to get a good ground

[RE-wrenches] Mounting on rock

2018-04-12 Thread Aaron Mandelkorn
Hi all,

I have a customer that requires a mounting option I have yet to encounter.
His site sits on top of of a massive hill of granite. It is relatively
flat. Are there any mounting options that could work here? We are only
talking about (12) to (16) modules for an off grid array. Is there
anything that can bolt to rock? I typically use dpw or Mt solar pole
mounts but can't imagine how these options could work. Any thoughts?
