[Repeater-Builder] Re: linking and contrrolers
Warren, Not sure you really need the UHF equipment. Since these two meter repeaters are up fairly high I assume they can see each other. Why not just add a second receiver at each site looking at the other repeater? Of course without some tricky controls this would lead to locking up both repeaters. If you are using tone squelch you can use a different tone to activate the secondary receiver. For example, say both repeaters normally use 100 htz tone. The secondary receiver is set use a tone of 123 htz so it does not respond to normal repeater activity. Then someone comes along and wants to link up the two repeaters. He transmits 123 htz tone and his repeater transmits 123 htz. The secondary receiver in the distant repeater is activated now because it is listening for 123 htz. The secondary receiver in the distant repeater brings up its transmitter but with 123 htz instead of its normal 100 htz tone. This would activate the secondary receiver in the first repeater but since it is the secondary receiver the active, main receiver has priority and would override it. There are some gotcha's with this system, The main receiver in each repeater would need to respond to at least two different tones. The tones should be filtered and regenerated. The tones would need to be muted during hang time, there only when the receivers are actually hearing a user. The main receiver must take priority over the secondary receiver and mute it. For the user of this system of linking is very easy - just change the tone! In this description I mentioned using only two different tones. In practice four would be probably be better, less chance of feedback during turn around. If there are only two repeaters involved this is a great way to effectively tie them together at times. It is legal, at least in the States, (Canada - don't know) as the secondary receivers are just that, auxiliary inputs to a repeater, not technically links. There is no "bring up the link", "turn off the link", to it. The linking state is dynamic and controlled by each user. It only exists as long as someone is transmitting the proper tone. Getting a couple of receivers to work this close to your output frequencies may be a challenge, but with some shielding and yagis, it should be do-able. 73 and good luck with your projects, Al, K9SI PS: If you are using carrier squelch now you can use tone squelch only when you want to activate the distant repeater. < Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2005 14:15:49 -0500 (EST) < From: Warren "Beaulé" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Repeater-Builder/ <*> To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <*> Your use of Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Re: db products matching feedline question....
Kinda what I thought... rg-11 is an 84% VF. No clue for sure what the original vapor block was. I was going to try one at 38", but thought I should ask around. Counting the VF, the original 36" doesn't compute to a half wave, which would be 30.43" at the original frequency, but maybe that isn't what they were shooting for.. Re: [Repeater-Builder] db products matching feedline question....
I think you need to multiply the physical wavelength by the velocity factor... which is about ~.8 - .88 or so depending on the specific cable...on the longest frequency.. [Repeater-Builder] db products matching feedline question....
I'm rebuilding a db-252 corner reflector for use on 2 meters. The original (broken) dipole radiator was fed with a 36 inch piece of the "vapor block" db feedline. I think this stuff is 70 or 75 ohms, judging by the center conductor diameter. It's pretty much identical to RG-11 (75 ohm) cable. The question is, how do they calculate the length of the matching section? 36 inches is a physical half wave (not electrical length) at the original center frequency of 155 mhz. I guess I could just replace it with the same length, but I was thinking that it needed to be a tad longer for use at 147 mhz. Whadda ya'll think? I have run into this same problem with my 2 meter portapeater. In fact the first time I observed it was when testing a 3 element yagi that initially had a 10 foot RG-8X jumper on it. I ended up replacing that jumper with RG-142. Regarding the main feed, I tried using 45' of LMR-400 & had good luck with it, but that's probably only because the shield RF currents stayed on the foil shield. If a break ever develops in that foil or the RF "folds over" at a connector, you're doomed for desense. In my case, my guess is that any RF current near the antenna radiated off of the outer shield of the 10' RG-142 section, which is OK because it's silver plated. By the time the RF got to the RG-142/LMR-400 junction, enough of it had radiated away that the outer tin-plated braid of the LMR-400 wasn't an issue. My theory, anyway. If correct, a better solution would be a common-mode choke on the RG-142 to keep RF from getting to the LMR-400's braid. Yet another choice would have been to simply use RG-214 for the entire antenna run, since it's loss at 2 meters is acceptable for lengths < 40 ft. or so. Bob NO6B Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Hustler spirit antennas
Hey guys, Anyone played with the hustler spirit series of antennas, they any good? I'm thinking about getting a 2 meter one. Any thoughts, and any ideas on where to get them, and general prices? [Repeater-Builder] MVP (Adding the extra 2 poles of IF filtering)

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Good quality RG-8X ? (and GMRS port-A-peter)
Hi Neil and all Thanks for all of your input and suggestions. I guess I'll go with RG-214/U simply for the storage factor and rolling/unrolling I can see happening during drills and (hopefully not), an actual "event"...superflex, I'm afraid, might get crushed or "bent out of shape". I like the idea that was presented about the camper flagpole "mast". We have a camping center a few miles from here so I'll be making a call to see if they have them available. As far as an antenna is concerned, I'll prolly start out with the comtelco I currently have and run some real life tests...its small, light, and a mast made out of almost anything should support it. Russ, you mentioned a solar panel you put on the hood of your suv. May I ask the specs on what you use? The setup I am going to be using is: XMTR- 40 Watt maxtrac turned down to about 15-20 watts (with a 12V fan) into the duplexer (which is by the way, an old motorola TFE6080 "diplexer"), RCVR- 25 watt maxtrac, controller- mother "M" R.I.C.K.. I haven't checked the amperage that the setup uses...I'll have to get my hands on a meter...mine is blown up:-( For AC use and while assembling the unit, I have a maxon 12 amp supply that seems to do fine. Before someone says something about the maxtrac transmitter compliance, I know, I know...its 5ppm, but hey, this is for emergency use.
