<---Sorry Jim but that isn't what Kenwood says. They spec the TKR's at 100%
duty cycle @ 25 watts but they also plainly spec the 850 of being capable
of 40 watts at other than 100% duty cycle (I can quote from the service
manual if that helps)

That his 850 wouldn't make more than 27 watts, even when programmed for hi
power, indicates something is out of whack.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Wacom wp-698 1285 MHz Duplexer

2005-04-19 Thread Eric Lemmon

George,

My WACOM catalog is #941. I received it, along with Price List #933, in
May of 2000. The company was bought by TX-RX several years ago. TX-RX
apparently still has some WACOM product in stock, even though the
production line is closed. I see that Hamtronics still lists the WP-639
and similar duplexers as a product.

The reference I quoted was only found in the price list dated July 1,
1993, and not in the catalog itself. The term "BpBr" is generally
interpreted to mean "Bandpass - Bandreject" which means that both pass and
notch functions exist. Normally, that entails a threaded rod to adjust
the pass and a variable capacitor to adjust the notch. If there is no
notch tuning capacitor (usually a Johansen air variable capacitor with a
small brass cap) then perhaps the notch is fixed during manufacture for a
fixed split. Indeed, if there is only the one adjustment, then you should
tune it as if it were a notch duplexer- tune fr maximum rejection of the
opposite frequency, and accept the insertion loss that results.

You might contact Len Pringle at Telewave, Inc for tuning advice.
Telewave makes a big thing about having a product lineup that duplicates
the WACOM offerings.

2005-04-19 Thread Paul Finch

Bob,

Everything stays the same, only thing that changes is the PA and it's not
quite as broadbanded as the original but should work really well at the 460
MHz range. I bet the driver was starting to burn up, mine turned into an
expensive lump of coal before I found it in trouble.

I am surprised that your local Kenwood dealer did not want to take care of
that, like I said they make 82 bucks each time they change one out. It does
take a little over one hour to do the mod though but still pretty good money
and it does not have to be shipped. Kenwood got my new PA's to me in two
days, was supposed to be one but still great service.

Good luck,
Paul

Hi Paul

I called my local Kenwood dealer and they gave me the East Coast
service center number. I talked with a tech there and they want the
unit back. S, I'm headed off to the shipping place to send it
to Virginia Beach. They said the turn-around time is a day or so.
Ain't bad. The tech said it sounded like the flakey old PA board,
so hopefully in a week or so, I'll have a virtually new repeater!

One final question...I didn't think to ask the tech...will my
current software work with the upgrade or will I need to upgrade it
as well?

[Repeater-Builder] Re: MSR2000 CW ID'er Board

2005-04-19 Thread skipp025

Not that rare... the far left two or three
MSR-2000 backplane slots fit a number of
"wild card" options. Other choices are
multiple pl encode and decode options. The
white back plane plastic label doesn't
indicate all the cards, which fit and work
in those locations.

Sometimes the supplied control manual doesn't
even have the possible cards listed, ie the
ID'er and alarm cards. You find the info for
said cards in the original AS-Built docs.

Bob,

The Q-4 transistor is directly behind the final transistor and is a flat
pack device. Follow the circuit backwards from the final and there is a
black or dark grey transistor, can't miss it. It is a strange deal, it
looks like it's supposed to be heat sinked to the casting through the PC

If you are using the repeater at 462 MHz you should have full rated power,

Hello,

If it has the "New Improved" PA deck and he is below 450 MHz using one of
the 450 to 470 MHz split radios is the problem. You can tell the new PA
deck from the old by the Q-4 driver transistor. The old style was not
screwed into the casting, It's a surface mount looking thing. The new
driver is screwed to the casting and they also have copper colored "springs"
over the top of both the driver and final transistors.

I just did 5 of these updates to my TKR-850's and tested them all on 442.15,
none made rated power there but did above 450 MHz. To prove this he can
always program the radio to a higher frequency and check it there.

That his 850 wouldn't make more than 27 watts, even when programmed for hi
power, indicates something is out of whack.

Morning Russ and all

First, I want to thank you all for your responses. Russ, the label
on the unit says TKR-850 then under that is -1 so I assume its a
version 1 model. Also, the freq range is 450-480 according to the
info when reading the radio via software.

Another responder asks what the output looks like on a spectrum
analyzer...alas, this poor 'lil radio guy ain't got one.

Guess its time for a call/visit to a Kenwood dealer.

Thanks again all

2005-04-19 Thread Mike Perryman

I just looked it up as well...  WP Catalog #901, dated 1990.
Eric is right on the money...  but, unfortunately no specifics in
this catalog.  It appears on page 2 of the #901 price list.
But that is the only mention in this book, and Eric has already given you
all the data listed therein. As he stated below.
I would assume the "offset" is determined by the center tuning
of pass and reject..
Or am I missing something here?

<---Sorry Jim but that isn't what Kenwood says. They spec the TKR's at 100%
duty cycle @ 25 watts but they also plainly spec the 850 of being capable
of 40 watts at other than 100% duty cycle (I can quote from the service
manual if that helps)

That his 850 wouldn't make more than 27 watts, even when programmed for hi
power, indicates something is out of whack.

I have the spec sheet for the 750/850 from the Kenwood dealer site. It
says in a couple of places that it is rated for 15-25W in 100% cont.
duty repeater service. It's too big to attach to this email, and I don't
see the option for uploading into the files area for this group. If
anyone wants it, I can email direct I guess, it's about 633K. (651,264
bytes, give or take)

Bottom line: Kenwood says not to run it at more then 25W in repeater
service. Period.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] GE icom question . . .

2005-04-19 Thread Bob Underwood

Don
Before you order crystals, I think you've got a little more homework to
do: those two frequencies are pretty close together, so you will need
good duplexer. Are those frequencies legal to use for repeater service; I
realize this is not the place to discuss rules, but I think those are FRA
frequencies, and I know nothing about how that works.
By the way, I recognize your name from the Pacific Locomotive Association
list; I'm a (mostly) silent member of that organization too. I have a
pretty full plate at the moment, but I do have an HP8920 service monitor
and some experience (trustee and technical staff of AA6BT/R, 146.115+)
that might be helpful; let me know off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or

What about the 5C?  since I understand it's just for freq

How much $$ am I looking at?  I looked at the International Crystal

[Repeater-Builder] TKR-850

2005-04-19 Thread Russ Stafford

Hello All,
If you plan to use a Kenwood TKR-850 below 450 MHZ it must be ordered or
tuned to work
there. My Kenwood dealer set mine up and it works just fine. Ver twos will
do 40 watts all day and night.
Very best of 73,
Russ, W3CH.
