[Repeater-Builder] Andrew Antennas - Beware

2006-04-17 Thread w5aku1
This week i E-Mailed Andrew.com to order a replacement dipole element
on a DB-224-E antenna.
The reply from - [EMAIL PROTECTED] informed me that they Do not replace PIECE
Parts and I needed to order a new antenna.
It appears they no longer support the DB Products line. Beware!!
If you need Parts, Good Luck !! Mr. Haynes LL is 1-800-255-1479 I wonder if
Telewave sells parts for their products?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Mastr 2 PA Matching Unit

2006-04-17 Thread Andrew G.

Jeff, Larry, John Thanks a lot. I knew something wasn't right about the way those PA's were tuning up. With 110watts combined output each amp was drawing 16-17amps according to the metering panel (didn't run it too long of course). I'll be going back to the site tomorrow night and will report back on performance. If everything goes right I guess it will be time to start stocking up on those tiny resistors in the splitter/ combiner panel for when one of the amps lets go. 73 Andy KC2GOW

2006-04-17 Thread jeff
Those tiny resistors are rated for 100 watts dissipation. If one PA
fails, the resistor will dissipate one half of the remaining power, i.e.
50 watts. Don't worry about them, it's unlikely you will toast one.

The red connector from the test set goes to the

Depends on the configuration. And you don't always need a lot of gain. You
should choose the antenna for the application. I've got a four-bay, four
element array that gives me 9 dBd gain in the direction of the elements (all
pointed the same direction). I didn't want to needlessly send RF in an area
with no users.

 Hi Skipp...
The pricing scheme for flea market spaces had been in place for
many, many years, and is intended to discourage the larger
vendors from hogging all the spaces, while keeping things less
expensive for the guy who just wants to sell a few things he's
had lying about in his shack. Interestingly enough, the average
vendor buys just over two spaces ( kinda like the average American
family has 2.4 kids!). Also, this means that the vendors who
buy a lot of spaces, and generally require a bit more attention
and effort from the committee, pick up their share of the costs.

The comment about the 2-way shops is pretty astute, and is also
true for the build-your-own computer parts places, who have a
tough time competing with a $400 pre-assembled PC.

There is also the e-bay factor, although that seems to work both
ways, as I have had several people tell me they buy things there
for the purpose of bringing them to Dayton to resell.

The right place to go for information is [EMAIL PROTECTED],
but if that isn't getting any response, send a message to chair@
hamvention.org (and a copy to [EMAIL PROTECTED], the asst. GC). That's the
big boss, and he doesn't like it when inquiries go unanswered. He
has the power to make heads roll.

Understood, did not say (or I did not understand) you needed cardiod

It's not an omni, it's a cardiod. A DB-411 would be a comprable model. I
don't want or need any higher gain or narrower beamwidth; the site is almost
2000' HAAT in the direction of interest.

A DB-410 or newer DB-420, both omni directional at 9 dB.

Hello,

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger! I sent a email requesting an explanation
for their weird price schedule, not a single word! I have since decided I
am not going. Three spaces does not mean a commercial vendor to me, that is
the only explanation I have gotten so far and that was not from the
Hamvention people.

Please drop my previous reply informational only post
from your Hamvention Posts. I've gone the extra mile
by again asking someone to look into your comments, but
I honestly would rather duck out of the next serious

spam I receive increase 12dB.

I'll be there as will most of the people who know the
event will be a great time.

I can't wait to see the 3 or 4 new repeater controllers
said to be shown for the first time.

that is all...

See you at IWCE and Dayton... I'm the guy with the pen

[Repeater-Builder] High Power Mastr 2 Station

2006-04-17 Thread Andrew
One other query to put out. Does anyone have a couple of those
resistors that are in the splitter/combiner panel of a high power
Mastr 2 station? I found a spare panel for my repeater that I would
like to get going for just in case. I have the panel and the cabling
but one resistor is missing and the other is now cooked, well done. If
not any suppliers of them or a good replacement? Thanks

To save me a trip to storage, refresh my memory. Are the Wilkinson
resistors soldered to the back of that little square perforated box, or do
they have a mounting flange and attach to the box and rack plate with
screws?

If the former, I'm not sure where to get them. But they could probably be
replaced fairly easily with a flange mount type instead.

For flange mount types, try EMC thick-film resistors
(http://www.emct.com/microwavepassivecomponents-a40835.html). I've used
them for building my own Wilkinsons for other projects. They also make
terminators (one lead instead of two, with the flange being ground) which
are nice for building quadrature hybrids using twisted wire coax.

I've used others from KDI/Triangle too in the past (now Aeroflex, who also
took over IFR).
http://www.aeroflex-kdi.com/resistor-products/pdfiles/PMS.pdf

If you Google some combination of the words stripline, RF, resistors,
flange, etc. you can probably find others.

If you totally strike out, I might be able to spare one of the flange mount
ones from my stock.

[Repeater-Builder] back-up battery charging

2006-04-17 Thread Lee Williams
I am now in charge of some club repeater sites which use the standard
Micor power supply. These have back-up batteries on them which are being
boiled dry by the 14.9V the power supply delivers, these supplies are not
the battery back-up versions. I am looking for a good solution to solve
this problem, maybe someone else has been there, done that??? Are there
adjustments to set the voltage on these beasts? I thought about a
relay,some big diodes,but it looks ugly... 73,Lee

Re: [Repeater-Builder] back-up battery charging

2006-04-17 Thread DCFluX
Do not use off the shelf battery chargers, commonly found at Wal-Mart.
These are SMPS conviently located with a 600kHz operating frequency.

Try an LM-317 set as a constant current regulator to trickle the
battery with C/100, Say 1 Amp for a typical Deep Cycle marine battery.
A common wall wart should be able to be modified for this purpose
nicely.

Then I would use a 120V coil relay with 20A contact to switch to the
battery on AC loss, and a big 68,000uF Cap on the line going off to
the repeater to sustain DC during relay switch time.

I have to look at them again, but I believe they attach with screws to the sqaure boxes...The little white square resistors...When I get to the site tomorrow I'll note the manufacture/mounting of them. I can't distinguishanything from this blob of plastic that is sitting on the test bench that used to be a resistor.
