Retrospect not recognising E: drive volume.

2000-01-24 Thread Mary Ann Zhang

We have installed Server 5.0 recently and have various client platforms.

I have one pc with WinNT 4.0 and the server will see the client but
not all its volumes. Drive C: & CDROM available as backup option but
Retrospect is not recognising Drive E:.

There is no problem with all the other nt clients with multiple volumes.

I have reinstalled client etc to no avail. Has anyone any suggestions?

Re: Retrospect 4.2, OS9, and DLT?

2000-01-24 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Craig,

I'm glad the problems you were experiencing cleared up, but I assure you the
Retrospect Driver Update didn't contribute to that. The RDU only adds
support for more devices through added and updated drivers, hence the name.
:)

RDU 1.9 fixed the problems with Retrospect and DDS-4 drives, but only
because the problems were caused by Retrospect's driver for this device. By
including an updated driver, RDU 1.9 fixed the problems.

Chris, I'd encourage you to call us directly to assist you in
troubleshooting this if the Find By Content recommendation that Craig gave
you doesn't work out.

Re: Retrospect 4.2, OS9, and DLT?

2000-01-24 Thread Craig Gaevert

I was having a real problem until I added the latest driver update, the one
specifically for DDS-4 drives. While that update may not apply to DLT
drives it sure solved some serious crashes with OS9 and Retro 4.2. I think
it may have fixed some things other than just DDS-4 drives. You may also
find some relief if you remove the FBC Scheduler extension and Find by
Content Extension. That suggestion came from the ASIP bug team.

Retrospect 4.2, OS9, and DLT?

2000-01-24 Thread Chris Ross

I have a Lacie DLT 2000 tape drive... Recently I updated our server to
OS9, ASIP 6.3, and Retrospect 4.2 - from OS 8.6, ASIP 6.2, and
Retrospect 4.1. Ever since Retrospect has not been the same. It crashes
every time we try to back up and it retrieves most of the time ok. When
it crashes it also makes all lights on the DLT drive flash. I turn the
DLT drive off for a while and then its back to normal (I use that term
loosely), until it crashes again. I was thinking that the DLT drive
might need a firmware update, I have no clue but I haven't got a
good backup in a week. Lacie's webpage is no help, I don't see anything
for the DLT 2000. I was also thinking I might have to update the
drivers on the Hard drives (since they are FWB 3.0.1 RAID). I would like
to get a good back up before I do this though!!

My server is stable when Retrospect is not running!! Is anyone else
having problems with Retrospect 4.2, ASIP 6.3 and OS9? Any Ideas?

Re: New Server 5.0 User Questions.

2000-01-24 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Adam,

As long as your DVD-RAM disk appears to Windows, it should appear to
Retrospect. The only exception that I can think of off the top of my head is
if the drive is assigned letter A: or B:. If so, Retrospect will not
recognize it. Change its drive letter.

As far as your DAT drive, tape capacity is dictated by several factors, none
of which involve software settings or anything you can set as options. Tape
drives are streaming mechanisms, meaning that tapes move at a constant speed
during backups and do not wait for data to arrive to them. As such, transfer
speeds, whether you're doing local or network backups, and problems with
your hardware can all affect the capacity you get per tape.

You also might want to check out Dantz Technical Note 305, at

This note, "Streaming Tape Capacities Explained," should go into more detail
on the possibilities for tapes filling up sooner than expected.

As always, call us for further help.

Subject: New Server 5.0 User Questions.

I just purchased the server version after having much grief with Veritas
Backup Exec and have a few problems.

I called Dantz before buying the product and they said yes to the 9210 being
supported however when the media is in the drive it does not show up on the
list. The device area in Retrospect shows there is not a driver available
for the 9210 or the DVD drive or even the zip. I do have media in the
drives. What might I be doing wrong.

When doing a backup with a DDS3 tape it should handle 12 gig uncompressed or
24 gig compressed. When it gets to 12 Retrospect is asking for another
tape. I even tried to select choices for software compression but since
drive has hardware Retrospect will use that. The manual says that if the
drive says DC it supports Hardware Compression. The attached image shows
the properties of the drive. Ideas?? I have dried several DDS3 tapes. I
have also erased tapes several times. Format choices is not available.

System Properties

Windows 2000 Server RC 2 Build 2128

Micron PIII 600

320 Meg Ram

2 9 gig LVD SCSI Hard drives

HP 9210 CDR

Hitachi DVD Ram drive

HP 40i DDS4 tape drive

Internal Zip Atapi

Adaptec 2940u2 LVD controller card

The hard drives and the 40i are on the same SCSI chain with active
termination set and hooked onto the 68 pin LVD connector on the SCSI card.
The CDrom and the CDR and are on another chain hooked into the 50 pin
connector on the 2940 Adaptec card.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Re: Retrospect 5.0 PC w/ OnStream

2000-01-24 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Victor,

Retrospect 5.0 does not yet support backup to any Onstream drives. We're
still working to qualify these drives on the Windows side, though we hope to
introduce support soon.

As soon as Onstream releases their latest Mac firmware updater, however,
Retrospect Mac (version 4.2 with the RDU 1.9) will be able to back up to the
Onstream Echo 30 GB.

Please call us directly if you have any further questions.

Re: QUERY: CD-RW Yamaha S6416 mechanism problems??

2000-01-24 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Greg,

Dantz has verified that there is a bug in the firmware of the Yamaha 6416
CD-RW drive. While we have notified Yamaha of this bug, until we are
apprised of a solution to this problem, we can no longer officially support
backup to the Yamaha 6416 CD-RW drive with Retrospect or Retrospect Express.

The bug will cause the drive to intermittently return error 100 (illegal
command) when used with Retrospect on slower Macintosh and PC models. We
have some suggestions to try to work around this problem: use a faster
backup computer if there is one available, or try to increase the data rate
by disabling software compression and minimizing external activity during
backup. In Windows, you can also try disabling auto-insert notification.

Though Retrospect will recognize and load a driver for this device, you may
see the error when backing up to this drive on your computer. The only
computers I have not seen this error occur on are Power Mac G3s and G4s or
very fast Pentiums, though even these fast machines are not guaranteed to
work correctly with the drive.

Please call us directly if you have any further questions.

QUERY: CD-RW Yamaha S6416 mechanism problems??

2000-01-24 Thread Greg Jewett

Can anyone let me know why Yamaha S6416 mechanism would not be recommended?

I just purchased recently a Yamaha S6416 drive for my Macintosh. To
date, I have no problems with the drive, with the exception of a

What problems has the list heard about that drive, or experienced? I
would be very interested! :/

RE: CD-RW Does it make a difference which Mac you have?

2000-01-24 Thread Thone, Bradley A (Sbcsi)

You probably won't find such a list.

The "manufacturers" (branders?) will use whatever drive mechanism for which
they can get a good deal at the time they need to make the deal.

Computer makers do the same thing with hard drives and some other parts.

Brad.

I found the list of acceptable CD-RW mechanisms that will work with
Retrospect Express on the Dantz website.

Now is there a list somewhere that tells you what mechanisms are being
used in various company's models.

When I visit the sites they say they manufactured their product but my
research tells me that in most cases the inside mechanisms came from
somewhere else.

The name and number of that mechanism would sure be a help. Hopefully
there is a master list somewhere in this big wide world.

Thanks

Bruce
