Re: ASIP 6.3.3

2001-01-10 Thread jakob krabbe

Hmm...

First, I didn't know there was such thing as a 4.3 update for the mac os.
Should I change the current 4.2?

I have a beige G3 server for retrospect, an asip server with a 30 scsi raid
and some 10 mac clients.

---

Then I'd like to share another solved problem with you.

During my time with retospect, wich is close to two years, I have always
run into a strange error where retrospect just stops in a backup and dosn't
do anything. This can go on for days if no-one touches the computer. Not so
fancy feature and I really hoped changeing computer would make a difference.

It didn't... For another reason I changed the backup order so my computer
would be the last one to be backed up. Then I knew all others had been
backed up successfully (or at least been seen by retrospect).

For some strange reason THAT was the solution to the suddenly-freez-thing
above! Today is the third day in a row that backup has been made without
any strange break!

I have a win-98 machine, we have another win-98 machine and the rest are macs.

---

So, if you run into strange errors, try changeing the backup order of your
clients! :-)

thanx,

/ jakob - who hopes this lasts forever...

RE: ASIP 6.3.3

2001-01-09 Thread Peters J B (Brooks) CRBE

Dirk,

I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago, when two brand new G4's with MacOS
9.0.4 consistently failed to be backed-up as clients to a G3 server. I found I could
down-tune the Retrospect clients for these two systems from TCP/IP to AppleTalk, after
which their backups would run to sompletion. Prior to that they failed every time
with 519 errors after just a few megabytes had been copied to tape.

I haven't revisited the problem since. All software was MacOS 9.0.4 and Retrospect
4.3 (application and client).

I have a big problem, i'm wondering of this can be the cause of retrospect.

I work several years with retrospect and now i work for several
months with retrospect 4.3 and i work also with the 4.3 clients. The
backup works fine, but now i have upgraded our fileserver a G3 with
ASIP 6.2 with a 4.1 client of retrospect to a G4 with ASIP 6.3.3 with
a 4.3 client of retrospect, i have the appleshare IP 9.0.4 upgrade
done also, and retrospect give always the same 519 error and the
fileserver stops working. When i take no backups even a day or 4 the
fileserver stays stabile. Now i'm thinking of using retrospect 4.1
again to see of this is the cause of the problem. Do you now another
 solution??

I've seen similar messages over the past few months of people
upgrading. Both on this list the AppleShareIP list as well as
another list I am on.

This is growing concern that there may be something not working
correctly with G4's and ASIP and OS 9. All are running current
versions of everything and trying to do the backup over IP.

Something that Dantz and Apple may wish to investigate further.

Please spare me the "mine works fine" messages, it obviously is
happening to more than a few people.

Re: ASIP 6.3.3

2001-01-09 Thread matt barkdull

Thanks for the link, however I think the problem is specifically with
G4 Macs. People upgrading a perfectly working G3 machine to a G4
experience this problem.

I personally have not experienced it. I'll keep my ASIP server a G3
until all of the desktops are upgraded to G4 or better machines and
even then I really like the idea of having built in IDE and SCSI in
this Beige G3 for the server. Lot easier to find a replacement drive
in a hurry.

Garret,

Running a client on an AppleShare IP server should go fine. Check out
"Working with Mac OS File Servers" on p. 161 of the Retrospect 4.2 User's

 Subject: Re: ASIP 6.3.3

 Ronnie,

I have run ASIP 6.2 with OS 8.6 and am now at OS9 and 6.3.1. I have used
 both retrospect 4.1 and 4.2.

I started out using my ASIP server also as my primary Retrospect server
with no problems at all. I back up a 30 machine network to a Ecrix VXA
drive. No special config, no problems. I also have plenty of RAM for my
server.. G3 with 384 meg ram. I have the server cache set to 284, gave
retrospect 32 (though you don't have to) and left roughly 60 for my system.
I have also now moved my Retrospect to a completely different machine.. just
because I have an extra G3 sitting around and I prefer separation of
services as much as the budget will allow.

Why wouldn't you just run Retrospect clients to backup machines rather
than putting in a file server AND retrospect.. unless you need the server
 for other tasks.

My next mission is to see how ASIP server reacts to being a client on my
backups. I don't like to mount all the drives I need (especially the boot
drive) to back them up on my retrospect server so I'd like to run just the
client software.. Maybe Matt has some answers here??

 Hope this helps

I am looking to setup an AppleShare IP fileserver for a specific
application of duplicating files. I want to duplicate files out to the
server so and backup the server. I have seen some issues with ASIP and
Retrospect come through retro-talk. Will any of you out there that have
experience and insight send me a note describing any of the pitfalls/areas
of concern/work-arounds etc. of the ASIP/Retrospect setup. I will most
likely use a G4, maybe a G3 for my ASIP server.
