Re: Re: [RollTideFan] Sunday night, Monday night...
Otelco bought my phone service provider - Hopper Telephone, located in Walnut Grove, Alabama. I have no other options for land-line phone service. As such, back in 1998, and even until this very day, my only local-number access to the Internet was through Hopper.net. After about 1 1/2 years as [EMAIL PROTECTED] some other yahoo's and myslef waged war against the retarded banafan list boner. At about the same time, I was waging a private war with a bull-dyke in Nashville, Tennessee. Unbeknownst to myslef at the time, I was getting heavy artillery support from a forward position. When the smoke cleared, my hopper.net account was permanently terminated. A personal call to the dickhead Otelco President to plead my case was an exercise in futility. In fact, I was told that not only would I NEVER be allowed to subscribe to their ISP, I would be lucky if they didn't discontinue my phone service altogether. What's your story? [RollTideFan] (Ain't) MOO!
A man took his wife to the rodeo and one of the first exhibits they stopped at was the breeding bulls. They went up to the first pen and there was a sign attached that said: This bull mated 50 times last year. The wife playfully nudged her husband in the ribs and said: He mated 50 times last year. They walked to the second pen which had a sign attached that said: This bull mated 120 times last year. The wife gave her husband a healthy jab and said: That's more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him. They walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that said, in capital letters: This bull mated 365 times last year. The wife so excited that her elbow nearly broke her husband's ribs, said: That's once a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one. The husband looked at her and said: Go over and ask him if it was with the same cow. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] They call him 'The next Carnell'
If Attalla-Etowah star Randy Dupree lives up to his nickname, he'll be a great college running back. Around here the fans call me 'The next Carnell', says Dupree, referring to former Etowah and Auburn star running back Carnell Williams. I don't know about that, because Carnell was a great running back. But, hopefully, someday my name will be that special around here. Dupree is already pretty special to Etowah. As a junior, the 6-0, 200-pounder rushed for 1,500 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. I'm a power runner, Dupree says. If the outside is open, I'll take it. But I'd just as soon run between the tackles. I guess you could kind of compare me to Kenneth Darby a little bit. Dupree is already attracting attention from several schools, including Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Southern Miss. Two weeks ago at Alabama's A-Day game, Dupree spoke with Bama's coaching staff about the possibility of playing for the Crimson Tide. I spoke with Coach [Dave] Ungerer, Coach [Randy] Ross, and with Coach Shula, Dupree says. They haven't offered me anything in writing, but I guess you could say they offered me verbally. They said that they've watched my tape and that they really liked what they saw. They said that I could play at Alabama. They said they need some running backs and that I'd be good for them. Dupree says that he grew up a lifelong Alabama fan. But so did that other famous running back from Etowah. I talked to Carnell about it, and he said he was a big Alabama fan but that Auburn just felt like the right place for him, Dupree says. I'm an Alabama fan, but I'm going to keep everything open. I want to see how the running backs at Alabama and Auburn perform this season and then see which school is right for me. Dupree comments on his favorites Alabama I like the way they spread their offense out. They run a lot of draw plays, which I like. They pass to open up the run. I also like Coach Shula. I noticed when I talked to him that he puts education first. That means a lot to me. Auburn I've known Carnell [Williams] a long time. His mother is my neighbor, and they've told me all about Auburn. I even went down there [to Auburn] a few times with Carnell. I was down there last week on a visit and really liked it. Even though I'm an offensive player, I'm a firm believe that defense wins championships, and Coach Tuberville is a defensive coach. I like that. Mississippi State Their running backs coach, Freddie Kitchens, is another former Etowah player. He's going to be recruiting me. He's already told me all about Coach Croom and about their offense. Plus, I know that Freddie would treat me well. Southern Mississippi Believe it or not, Derrick Nix is coaching there now and he's also a former Etowah player. Derrick was a running back, and he's already told their running backs coach that I'm the man for them. His dad comes to all of our games and he tells Derrick all about us. Note: Dupree says that he's been timed at 4.4 in the 40. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] QA with Antonio Forbes
One of the Tide's top signees in this year's class is defensive lineman Antonio Forbes (6-4, 270) of Meadowcreek HS in Norcross, GA. During the course of his senior year, Forbes went from a sleeper to one of the most highly recruited players in the state of Georgia. The Tide won the battle for him against Texas AM, Florida State, Ohio State and many other top programs. Here's how it happened. QA with Antonio Forbes TI: Looking back to last year this time, nobody knew about Antonio Forbes. You just all of a sudden emerged through the summer camps and especially during your senior season. AF: Yeah, that's because I didn't play as a sophomore or as a junior. I wasn't eligible, so nobody knew about me. I wasn't serious about playing football until my senior year. I was just hanging out and doing whatever I wanted to. But I got serious as a senior. I knew that I had to do everything I could do in one season to earn myself a scholarship. It all started with the camps last summer. I went to every camp ready to show them what I could do. I thought I performed great at every camp. Then when the season started I just got better every week. My confidence shot up every game. I could feel that I was physically and mentally ready to play. I was leading the team in tackles and sacks in almost every game. We were losing, but that didn't stop me from playing hard every play. I just kept getting better and a lot of schools were noticing me. TI: What was the motivation behind your turnaround? AF: It all started with my coach, George Pugh. He came in and inspired me. He said I had the size and all the ability it took to play D1 college football. He was filling my head with a lot of positive thoughts. He said I could accomplish whatever I wanted to. I always had the ability to play, but when Coach Pugh came in, he gave me the inspiration and direction I needed. TI: So by midway last season you went from having no scholarship offers to having offers from schools like Alabama, Texas AM, Virginia, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State. Did that blow your mind? AF: Yeah, it really did blow my mind. I mean, all these schools were offering me and I couldn't believe it. It was just happening so fast. It was happening just like Coach Pugh said that it could if I put my mind to it. All of a sudden everybody was calling me. Schools were offering. And all the other guys wanted to be in my shoes. TI: After you committed to Alabama in January you had some second thoughts. In fact, you really didn't make a final decision to stick with Alabama until the night before signing day. Why the second thoughts? AF: Some guy from one of the big websites called to do an interview with me and he said that Alabama had a lot of defensive ends already committed. I didn't know that. I realize all the schools tell you that you're their top guy, but I wasn't aware that Alabama had so many defensive ends committed. At first I kind of got mad about it. Not that Alabama lied to me or anything, but I was thinking that I really shouldn't go to a place where they had so many defensive ends already. But I'm a competitor. I knew that no matter where I went that I would have to earn my position. I knew I could compete. I came close to changing my mind [to Arkansas or Virginia], but I never committed to any school other than Alabama. TI: Your high school coach, George Pugh, played at Alabama. Was he influential in your decision to sign with Alabama? AF: Coach Pugh told me that no matter which school I chose that I couldn't go wrong. He said Alabama was a good school and that their coaching staff was very good. He said Tuscaloosa was a great town and the fans were great. He didn't really influence me, but he did say that Alabama wouldn't be a bad place to go. TI: What is it about you that made you into the Gwinnett County Defensive Player of the Year last season? AF: I believe it is my intensity and my aggressiveness. I love hitting and going after the guy across from me. To be 270 pounds and run a 4.6 40, there shouldn't be anybody that could stop me. I just developed that kind of a mindset. I don't believe that anybody can stop me. At Alabama's camp last summer, Coach Randolph nicknamed me 'Taz' (Tasmanian devil) because, he said, I was so wild that nobody could stop me. TI: You were a defensive tackle in high school. Will you play end or tackle at Alabama? AF: I want to play defensive end. But Alabama is bringing in a lot of ends. If I moved to defensive tackle or even to tight end that would be fine with me. TI: Tight end? Has that been mentioned as a possibility? AF: Someone mentioned it to me. But the coaches keep telling me I'll play defensive end. I feel like I'm a natural defensive player, but I'd do whatever they needed me to do to help the team. Coach Shula says he can't afford to redshirt me. He says I can't help them on the sidelines and he wants to get me on

This is exactly what I was talking about? There are people spreading things in regards to this case that are half truths or out it out lies. First, it has been proven that he did not have relations with other women until she was in her veg. state. Second, the court experts ruled that her veg state was due to her heart stopping and the lack of oxygen being supplied to her brain. The cases of abuse have been gone through by the courts and have been proven no such abuse has occurred. So, where do we go from here? I can say that most people that I have talked to say that they would not want to be kept alive by these means. I myself am included. Her parents have recently stated that she is being abused and mistreated by hospice. In order for hospice to accept you, you have to be diagnosed as Terminal. These reports have also been found out to be false. I have come to believe that the parents will say and do whatever it takes to keep Terri alive. Even Lie! I feel for both of them but, I have not heard the Husband say one bad thing about her parents. For 15 years her parents could have paid for her medical treatment. Have they? No! The citizens of the state of Florida and her Husband have been doing that. I feel for both of them but, I feel that Terri would not want to be kept like she is in her current condition. What is life. She has no brain activity, she doesn't feel pain and now there are propagand being spred through the news she spoke up and didn't want her feeding tube pulled. Please, give me a break. The woman hasn't said it on either of the first 2 attempts the tube was removed. So, why now? Because, here is someone trying to push there own agenda. Let this woman rest in piece! I am going to repost an essay that I received off-list that seems to take an objective view of the situation. I have always suspected this husband is not what he is cracked up to be. Now, I suspect it even more. This is long, but worth the read. --- Life Through A Tube? by Techniguy 03-19-2005 For the past week now, the news and talk media have been dominated daily, with one or two exceptions, by one story; the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. With the information being presented by the media, I found myself at odds with the mainstream Republicans and the view of the Conservatives who have taken this issue all the way to the Superior count and the President of the United States. I have always believed that it's just wrong to keep someone alive with artificial means when their time has come to go whether it's by natural causes or artificial. I still believe that but there were questions in the Schiavo case that needed answering. The media turned this into a circus of ideological and moral issues with views from both sides of the question, but really hadn't given us enough information to understand what is really going on. All we really knew was that Terri was in a vegetative state with irreversible brain damage resulting from a heart attack 15 years ago and her husband, Michael Schiavo wants the feeding tube removed as it was Terri's wish, or so he says. There have been plenty of discussions regarding the legal issues involved, and who is right and who is wrong, but we've learned little more from them. I have been thinking about writing this article for a couple of days now which I knew would be controversial with most of my readers, but the way I saw it, no one would want to be kept alive in Terri's condition, and as her Husband, Michael is really the only person who has the legal right to decide the issue. It was bad enough that Terri's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, had been waging a seven year court battle to fight against the rights of the husband, but then when the Florida State Legislature, the Governor, and the Federal Government started getting involved in this, It seemed it was going too far. The law is the law, and the law says that Michael Schiavo has the right to have the feeding tube removed, so obey the law and grant him that right. Right? It turns out that the issue just isn't that simple. I am not going to

[RollTideFan] Wisconsin hunter wants open season on domestic cats
MADISON, Wis. - Hunter Mark Smith welcomes wild birds on to his property, but if he sees a cat, he thinks the invasive'' animal should be considered fair game. The 48-year-old firefighter from La Crosse has proposed that hunters in Wisconsin make free-roaming domestic cats an unprotected species'' that could be shot at will by anyone with a small-game license. His proposal will be placed before hunters on April 11 at the Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearings in each of the state's 72 counties. I get up in the morning and if there's new snow, there's cat tracks under my bird feeder ... I look at them as an invasive species, plain and simple,'' Smith said. Smith's proposal has horrified cat lovers, but is seen by others as a way to stop cats from killing wild birds. University of Wisconsin-Madison wildlife ecology professor Stanley Temple, who trapped more than 100 cats and analyzed their stomach contents during a four-year study, has estimated that between 7.8 million and 219 million birds are killed by rural cats in Wisconsin each year. It's obviously a very controversial proposal,'' Temple said, but added, I think there really is a basis for having a debate about it.'' The Conservation Congress is a five-member elected body whose duty is to advise the Department of Natural Resources and the Legislature on natural resources issues. DNR attorney Tim Andryk said the vote would simply be an advisory recommendation'' to state lawmakers. We (the DNR) don't have authority to regulate domestic animals. Legislation would have to be passed to accomplish this,'' Andryk said. You might also have to amend laws relating to abuse of domestic animals.'' But Temple said he thinks legislation is not needed. He said the department does have the authority to declare rural cats an unprotected species - because unclaimed cats can be considered non-native wildlife species like house mice, Norway rats, pigeons and starlings. If they are not a pet, if somebody doesn't claim ownership, they become a non-native wildlife species and not entitled to protection by the state,'' he said. Cat enthusiasts Cheryl Balazs, Ted O'Donnell and Adam Bauknecht are trying to organize opposition to Smith's proposal. O'Donnell, a co-owner of MadCat Pet Supplies, recently set up a Web site, dontshootthecat.com, to inform people about it. O'Donnell said Smith's proposal is a callous response'' to the problem of cats preying on wild birds. There's more humane solutions,'' he said. We as citizens should step up and solve the problem humanely.'' Sheri Carr, senior humane officer at the Dane County Humane Society, said the group has not yet taken a position on the proposal, but wants cat owners to abide by their local ordinances and not let their animals roam. I would hate to think that tame, owned cats who happen to slip out would be at risk of being deemed a wild, unprotected species,'' Carr said. It's a delicate (ecological) balance out there, but does that mean people should be able to shoot their neighbor's cat? Probably not.'' --- Information from: Wisconsin State Journal, http://www.wisconsinstatejournal.com ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] SCLC urges black athletes to boycott Auburn over firings
http://tinyurl.com/445r3 The president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on Saturday urged prospective black athletes to boycott Auburn University until the school rehires two black athletics administrators. Former administrators Stacy Danley and Eugene Harris were fired Feb. 10 in an administrative shakeup under Auburn's new athletics director. SCLC President Charles Steele Jr., in a statement Saturday, endorsed a vote by the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus on Feb. 24 that called on prospective black athletes considering Auburn to boycott the university until Danley and Harris are rehired. Steele, of Tuscaloosa, served in the Alabama Senate and the Black Caucus before taking the SCLC post in Atlanta. Steele was in Selma this weekend for events marking the 40th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Steele said the black athletes should boycott Auburn until the university takes a really strong look at addressing and correcting its reported discriminatory practices. I strongly urge Auburn University to address this matter immediately, Steele said. If not, we may have to extend the Selma-to-Montgomery march on towards Auburn. He said Auburn, like any other institution, must ensure that it offers equal opportunities and privileges to everyone, regardless of race, nationality, gender, or creed. I am in full support of those working to make sure that Auburn addresses the issue of diversity on its campus and in its Athletic Department and that they reexamine and reverse their decision to lay off Danley and Harris. In an earlier statement, new Athletic Director Jay Jacobs said Danley and Harris were dismissed because their jobs weren't needed under Jacobs' restructuring of the department. Jacobs noted that a white member of the department, marketing coordinator Marvin Julich, was also fired; and two blacks, Virgil Starks and David Mines, were promoted to associate athletic director posts. Auburn's interim assistant provost for diversity and multicultural affairs, Kennan Grenell, earlier described the removal of Danley and Harris as blatantly discriminatory. He had urged the SCLC to protest the firings. Grenell did not immediately return a phone message left at his home Saturday. Meanwhile, state Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, a member of the Legislative Black Caucus, said the caucus has discussed withholding state grant money to Auburn, but delayed voting on that move. Holmes said one member of the caucus chairs the committee that will need to approve Auburn's budget. Holmes said he planned to meet with civil rights leaders visiting the state this weekend in Selma to drum up support on the Auburn issue. He said they have also considered staging civil rights marches at Auburn. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Settlement reached in Neuheisel's lawsuit against NCAA and UW
By Seattle Times staff A settlement was reached this morning that will pay former University of Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel $4.5 million in his wrongful termination suit against the university and NCAA. The settlement, announced in King County Superior Court this morning just before closing arguments and after five weeks of testimony, would give Neuheisel $3 million - with $2.5 million of it to be paid by the NCAA and the remainder by the UW. The UW would also forgive a $1.5 million housing loan paid to him in 2002. The university's portion of the settlement will be paid out of the athletics department operating reserve fund. Neuheisel could have realized twice the amount had the jury found in his favor and awarded him the full benefit of his claim. The two parties tried to reach a mediated settlement the day before the trial began, but failed their last ditch attempt. I feel vindicated but the whole episode is a rather sad story, Neuheisel told College Sports Television, where he worked last seaons as an analyst. I have great respect for the NCAA and the University of Washington and filing the lawsuit against both was the hardest decision I have ever made. Ultimately I had to stand up for myself and I'm glad the matter is over. After his brief announcement, King County Superior Court Judge Michael Spearman called attorneys in the case into his chambers. Neuheisel had alleged the university wrongfully terminated his contract, and that the NCAA improperly influenced his employment by encouraging Washington administrators to fire him. The settlement in this case is the result of restrictions placed on the NCAA by the court about how the association could explain the bylaw and defend its rightful interpretation, said NCAA president Myles Brand in a statement. I have complete confidence that the NCAA enforcement staff acted properly and in compliance with NCAA bylaws with regard to Mr. Neuheisel's interviews. Even so, an independent examination of procedures and processes employed by the national office staff to implement NCAA bylaws will be expanded to review this specific instance. During the trial, the UW had argued that he had signed a contract that allowed for his firing for acts of dishonesty. School officials have said Neuheisel was fired for gambling on an NCAA basketball pool and failing to be forthright about it with NCAA investigators. Last week, Spearman left open the possibility of declaring a mistrial because the NCAA had failed to provide Neuheisel's legal team with an updated version of its bylaws during discovery. In a statement Monday, the university said it agreed to settle because a mistrial could be declared. The university presented the grounds for that decision in court and is confident of its position, said UW attorney Lou Peterson said. However, during the final days of trial, events outside the university's control raised the serious threat of a mistrial or reversal. The university is pleased that the NCAA assumed responsibility to help resolve the difficult situation that had developed around changes in its procedural rules. In four seasons with the Huskies, Neuheisel compiled a 33-16 record, including a Rose Bowl victory in 2001 and a No. 3 national ranking. Former athletic director Barbara Hedges fired him in June 2003 after she said Neuheisel lied to her about interviewing for a job with the San Francisco 49ers and about his participation in NCAA men's basketball gambling pools in 2002 and '03. Neuheisel has since been hired as quarterbacks coach for the NFL Baltimore Ravens. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
[RollTideFan] Tigers may wish they had Petrino
Saturday, March 05, 2005 In the past 15 months, the Auburn University administration has made two epochal decisions concerning head football coach Tommy Tuberville. The first, made (but not carried out) in November 2003, was to fire Tuberville after a bitterly disappointing season and replace him with Bobby Petrino of Louisville. The second, which was made official recently, was to reward Tuberville with a contract that will pay up to $3 million toward the end but will cost nearly $7 million to buy him off, even if he were to go 0-22 over the next two years. Which decision was the best one? It's easy and expedient to say paying Tuberville the small fortune after a perfect 13-0 season was the correct choice. Hindsight is always 20-20. However, was the other decision so flawed, considering the man Auburn wanted to replace Tuberville with is 20-5 after two seasons, including an 11-1 mark in 2004 and No. 6 finish in the final AP poll? In the contretemps that followed the revelation of Jetgate, one important feature was overlooked. Hiring Petrino was a pretty good idea. He had knowledge of the Auburn program -- having spent one year as offensive coordinator -- and he was considered a wunderkind in the coaching profession. One must remember that Tuberville was a dead man walking at the time of the infamous trip. Auburn, which started the season ranked high in the polls (The Sporting News had the Tigers No. 1), was 6-5 (three of those wins came at the mercy of Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Monroe) and had just lost at Georgia 26-7. So getting rid of him wasn't that far-fetched, considering Tuberville had an experienced team that was playing spectacularly below its potential. Where Auburn went wrong was the gauche manner in which it went about the furtive job interview. To Tuberville's enormous credit, he bit his upper lip in the aftermath, played the scorned woman's role to Oscar-winning perfection, then did something nobody could have predicted: He coached the season of his career in 2004. The team, led by a senior-laden and NFL-bound backfield, used the near firing of its beloved head coach and the pain of the misbegotten 2003 season as the impetus toward the best season in school history. In the aftermath, the administration, under a new president, had an equally dramatic but opposite reaction. Instead of trying to fire him like his predecessor, Ed Richardson, in essence, named Tuberville Coach for Life. Which one was the right move? Which move made more sense? The public reacted with vengeance toward William Walker and David Housel for daring to replace Tuberville with Petrino. Both heads were lopped off at what amounted to public executions. The public has reacted with a big yawn to Richardson's decision to give Tuberville the dizzying contract and nearly everything he wanted short of renaming the stadium after him. So back to the question: Which decision was best? Will Auburn be better off down the road with Tuberville as the football coach, ironclad contract and all? Or would the school have been better off to bite the bullet in the short run and bet on Petrino for the long haul? (Paul Finebaum's column appears Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Mobile Register. But like it or not, teams must prove themselves outside of their conferences to earn style points. It's as much a beauty pageant as it is a demolition derby. Auburn was put in this predicament after Southern Miss bailed out of a game because of conflicts with the new Conference USA schedule. But here's the hitch: Southern Miss informed Auburn last September. University officials knew for five months -- through a magical unbeaten season, through the controversy of not being able to play for the national title because of a pathetic nonconference schedule -- that they needed a nonconference game for 2005, yet they chose to continue down the same path. A university spokeswoman says Auburn needs seven home games per season to make budget. Fresno State didn't want a game in return -- We usually play on the road; we know that, Hill says -- but Auburn steered clear of a team that is 10-8 against BCS teams since 2000. Fresno State eventually signed up to play at two-time defending national champ USC -- which also will play nonconference games at Hawaii, against Arkansas and at Notre Dame. Notice the lack of cupcake directional schools. Albert Einstein once defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Change was staring Auburn in the face not so long ago. And the choice was Western Kentucky. You know him as Fresno State's brash and bold coach, a guy who has built a program from the scrap heap and will play anyone, any time, any place to gain respect. So I placed a call to Hill last week and told him Auburn just added a home game against Division I-AA Western Kentucky to complete its 2005 schedule. And before I could ask the question, he gave the answer. We called them, Hill interrupted. We wanted to play them. I guess their schedule was already filled. No, it wasn't. Fresno officials called before Auburn added Western Kentucky, and Hill is speaking with a politically correct tone because, well, he'd love a shot at Auburn somewhere down the road. Yeah, good luck with that. Auburn has bigger fish to flop. Like The Citadel. Or Western Kentucky. Or big, bad Ball State. This is why Auburn wasn't one of two teams playing in the Orange Bowl national title game last season, why the Tigers were stuck in the Sugar Bowl politicking for respect. Respect? Play someone with a pulse outside your conference, then we'll talk. Wait, I take that back. Aubie played USC in the 2002 and '03 seasons and lost by a combined 47-17. The Tigers also played Georgia Tech in 2003 and lost 17-3. Hence, the reason for last year's brutal nonconference slate of Louisiana-Monroe, The Citadel and Louisiana Tech. And the reason the Tigers weren't playing USC in the Orange Bowl. Look, Auburn shouldn't have to apologize for its schedule; it plays in the SEC, the toughest conference in college football. (KFT) that's shaped like critters run over by cars - complete with tire treads. The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy (search) - in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels - fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (search). It sends the wrong message to children, that it's OK to harm animals. And that's the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft, said society spokesman Matthew Stanton. The society is considering petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns to get the candy pulled from the market, Stanton said. After receiving a complaint from the NJSPCA Wednesday, Kraft officials pulled an animated advertisement from Trolli's Web site that featured car headlights and animals. No other decisions on changes have been made, said Kraft spokesman Larry Baumann. If you look across the Gummi category we certainly have many products that are offbeat, and that's what we were doing in this case, Baumann said. We didn't mean to offend anyone. My comments: What were you thinking? Road Kill Candy That is simply disgusting and a terrible lapse of judgment. What next? Little Fluffy Ignitable Candy? How about a candy that depicts starved and neglected dogs? Perhaps you could develop a rabbit candy with red liquid on the inside so that when you bite it, it bleeds. Or how about a hunter theme candy. The shapes could be deer, elk and other woodland creatures. But the twist would be to have an arrow sticking out of some of them and the rest could have a big hole where the bullet exited the body. Since this is marketed to kids, what other products can be thought of? I mean, since it appears to be ok to market the torture and killing of animals to kids, there has to be more open markets. Candy in the shape of lawnmowers running over cats; candy turtles where you can rip open the shell and eat the insides; maybe a dolphin caught in a candy tuna net; a little creativity could result in a fox, rabbit, mink or other furry creature type candy where kids could pull off their skins. And my favorite: A baby seal being beaten in the head for its pelt. And don't stop there. I'm sure there is a market for large, bloated candy in the shape of the tsunami victims. You know, with eyes bugging out and the body a faint green color. Maybe some could be missing an arm or a leg. Nothing like making it look real. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a member of PETA and i'll eat a hamburger any day. But the marketing of candy in the shape of dead animals is simply wrong - on so many levels. And to kids no less. Whoever thought of this, along with all the folks who thought it was a good idea should be made to work in an animal shelter for a week. Tonight I'm going to a Humane Society fund raiser to benefit our local chapter, so this hits me at a very bad time. I'll be sure to distribute the articles from the Internet about your new product line. I may not be able to effect the product purchases of others, but you can bet your sweet candy assets that I will take every opportunity to purchase products from any competitor of Kraft as long as this type of product is all that your company can come up with. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

JT - Original Message - From: Joel Perry [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'RollTideFan' RTF@RollTideFan.net Sent: Monday, February 14, 2005 10:15 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] Southern Pride. And gravy. Southern diet frustrates health officials By DANIEL YEE The Associated Press 2/14/2005, 9:35 a.m. CT DECATUR, Ga. (AP) -- Amid a national obesity epidemic and the South's infamous distinction as the Stroke Belt, health officials have been trying to get diners to flinch, at least a little, at the region's trademark fried and fatty foods. But nutritionists have found it's hard to teach an old region new tricks. How can Southerners give up delicious staples fried chicken, fried seafood, fried green tomatoes and cornbread slathered in butter? Even at the Atlanta headquarters of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leader of the nation's anti-obesity campaign, the cafeteria serves up such artery-clogging regional favorites as biscuits and gravy. CDC nutritionist Annie Carr said the agency is working to get its house in order by pushing the cafeteria to serve popular foods in healthy ways. The broader goals of the anti-obesity campaign are to educate people to cook with less fat and sugar and to promote the idea of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. And for the South, that doesn't mean vegetables and greens flavored with bacon and meat drippings. I don't think anything is wrong with the kind of vegetables we eat in the South - it's the way they are prepared, said former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, the interim president of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, who grew up eating traditional Southern staples on a farm in Alabama. We need more fruits and vegetables in our diet. When Becky Cleaveland is out with her girlfriends, they all pick at salads except for the petite Atlanta woman. She tackles The Hamdog. The dish, a specialty of Mulligan's, a suburban bar, is a hot dog wrapped by a beef patty that's deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions and served on a hoagie bun. Oh yeah, it's also topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. The owner says I'm the only girl who can eat a whole one without flinching, Cleaveland said proudly. Health officials' concerns with healthy eating in the South date back to 1962, when the CDC noted a large concentration of counties with high stroke death rates in the coastal states of North and South Carolina and Georgia. More than three decades later, the high stroke rates in that region seem to have shifted west to counties along the Mississippi River Delta. Health officials have spent thousands of dollars on grants to promote healthy eating, including sending nutritionists into community centers and churches. The food experts introduce healthier cooking practices, such as alternatives to frying and methods that reduce the fat in gravy and sauces. But those efforts have found resistance from some cooks who say the healthier recipes alter the taste of their dishes. Flavor is a big issue - when you modify Southern cooking, then you lose a lot of the flavor, said Laurita Burley, a clinical nutrition instructor at the Morehouse School of Medicine. The reputation of the Southern cook is at risk when you begin to modify it. Much of the South's traditional foods date back to the days of slavery. Frying was preferable in the region's hot climate, since it didn't take as long as baking and didn't heat up a house as much. Plus, Burley said, workers didn't have all day to prepare meals; they had to get back into the fields to work. Lard was also plentiful. Today, frying still is popular, especially in poor areas of the South, because it is also inexpensive. While it's quick, easy and adds flavor, frying loads ordinarily healthy foods with calories and fat. One of the common things in the South is that you fry everything, said Dr. Nicholas Lang, chief of staff of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in Little Rock. It's a major grease-transport mechanism - there's no idea how much calories you get when you get that. Other research has found that frying, grilling and smoking certain foods can cause chemical reactions within the food that can increase the risk of cancer. The best advice is to fry less and to eat their meat medium rather than well-done - and do like their momma said and add vegetables, said Lang, also a professor of surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Back at Mulligan's in Decatur, owner Chandler Goff is quick to point out that the bar also offers healthy alternatives, such as salads and sandwiches that aren't deep-fried. But he acknowledged that the Hamdog and the Luther Burger, a
