Hi and Welcome! Yes, it does. It can a) import into the current database in scid format and b) display READ-ONLY. In the gui a) click Database - Import. (NB import automatically saves in .si4 format) b) click File - Open (NB changes can be made but will NOT be saved in b.) If you are running a Linux then look at the script files in the bin directory e.g. $ ls /usr/local/bin/sc_* /usr/local/bin/sc_eco* /usr/local/bin/sc_import* /usr/local/bin/sc_spell* /usr/local/bin/sc_epgn* /usr/local/bin/sc_remote* Hope this helps Maurice On 07/02/2021, mayur...@kathe.in wrote: > Does SCID provide functionality to import databases in PGN format? > For example, the "Quality Base" product from "Chess Informant" (link > below); > https://sahovski.com/Quality-Base-2020-Download-Version-p184931479 > > Thank you. > > > > ___ > Scid-users mailing list > Scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scid-users > ___ Scid-users mailing list Scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scid-users

[Scid-users] Error msg after saving My Layout
Hi, I've been looking at the workings of the Game List window and deleted all those columns I don't normally pay attention to. Then I saved this layout to be able to recreate this at any time from the Full layout option. The next time I opened Scid there was an error message so that it did not load until I accepted it. It seems to be no big deal as it opened ok as expected but I thought it was worth mentioning. I attach the screenshot. Re: [Scid-users] Questions
Hi Carol The error message dpkg-query: package 'scid' is not installed presumably means that you compiled and installed scid for yourself. Is that right? If the package management system is not in control of the installation it may not have it added to the list of installed files. It seems that on Ubuntu systems Scid should install into /usr/games so that the list of files produced by $ dpkg -L scid ought to include /usr/games/pgnfix /usr/games/sc_eco /usr/games/sc_epgn /usr/games/sc_import /usr/games/sc_remote /usr/games/sc_spell /usr/games/scid /usr/games/scidpgn /usr/games/spf2spi /usr/games/spliteco /usr/games/tkscid Xubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) would install Scid 4.6.2 through apt or Software and 4.7.0 would have to be compiled separately on your own machine. Hi Carol, No problem. If you run the dpkg command to give you a list of files installed by the Scid package (you may have to prefix this with sudo, cannot remember) $ dpkg -L scid | grep bin You should get a list something like this : /usr/local/bin/pgnfix /usr/local/bin/sc_eco /usr/local/bin/sc_epgn /usr/local/bin/sc_import /usr/local/bin/sc_remote /usr/local/bin/sc_spell /usr/local/bin/scid /usr/local/bin/scidpgn /usr/local/bin/spf2spi /usr/local/bin/spliteco /usr/local/bin/tkscid /usr/local/share/scid/books/Elo2400.bin /usr/local/share/scid/books/Performance.bin /usr/local/share/scid/books/gm2600.bin /usr/local/share/scid/books/varied.bin The "local" folder may not used on your own system but I run OpenBSD where a separate local partition is standard for installed programs. The executable are all in the bin folder and of those only tkscid is a compiled program. All others are scripts which can be read with any text reader e.g. less or geany (colourises the text). Re: [Scid-users] Questions
Hi Steve, The documentation tends to lag behind the coded program quite a lot. I've volunteered myself to try to improve this. I've found that I need to know the program much better than I do to really get to grips with this. Lately I've been held up by ill health too. Had an operation 3 weeks ago but the recovery is going very well. Not everything works as I dare say we would like. If you press F1 anywhere in Scid you are intended to get relevant help. All the html files are generated from the Tcl code of the built-in help. Pgn files cannot be altered in Scid. They can only be read and all changes will be lost. The procedure to import a pgn file to a Scid database (which consists of 3 files - an index file .si4, a game file .sg4 and a name file .sn4) is as follows: Suppose you have a pgn file of AlphaZero's games called AlphaZero.pgn 1. Create a brand new Scid database with - and name it, for example "AlphaZero.si4 " (The index file implies both the associated files also) 2. Import the pgn file into this new database with - The imported games are saved immediately in the Scid database. Thus the old program pgnscid is now redundant. Note also the documentation currently references 3rd generation database files .si3 etc. rather than 4th generation. I think that the Windows fork of Scid code to "PC vs. Scid" was responsible for the 4th generation improvement and this has subsequently been drawn into the original Scid. I run Scid 4.7.0 on OpenBSD and on Windows 10 to try to satisfy myself of any anomalies between the two operating systems. If I can be of any further help please let me know. I'll do my best to respond within a day or two. Best Wishes Moss On 22/12/2019, Steve Cohen wrote: > 1. I'm using scid on Ubuntu Linux 19.04. Christian, You import a pgn to an existing Scid database in the same way: 1. Open the scid database you wish to import to viz: File-Open-"christian.si4" 2. Import the pgn: Database-Import File The act of importing saves the pgn games to the Scid database. [Scid-users] Replace Pgnscid with Import in the Help
I just managed to make Scid unstartable by altering help.tcl but it was OK when I undid the changes. This is the main bit of what I tried:- Import PGN (Pgnscid replacement) In help.tcl delete lines 3860-3926 inclusive. Then insert the below. # ### Import PGN help: set helpTitle(Import PGN) "Import PGN" set helpText(Import PGN) {Import PGN (or Pgnscid) Import is an inbuilt function used to convert PGN (portable game notation) files into Scid databases. For example, to convert a file named myfile.pgn to a new Scid database, you would create a new empty database (with whatever name you choose) then import the pgn. To create the new database you would click: File - New (Save dialog appears to type a name in) "newname.si4" This creates the 3 files of the new scid database(consisting of newname.si4, newname.sg4 and newname.sn4). Any errors or warnings will be written to the file newname.err. If you want the database to be created in a different directory simply switch to that directory in the Save Dialog. Note that the import function can not read Gzipped PGN files (e.g. mybase.pgn.gz) so you must unzip them first. Most all zip programs can do this. Windows 10 has the inbuilt ability. The second step is to import the pgn file by clicking Database - Import (Scid Dialog appears to type in a name) "newname.si4" You can edit (and even spellcheck) player, event, site and round names in Scid; see the Maintenance help page for details. (Updated: Scid 4.7.0, October 2019) } ### In addition, I replaced all occurences of Pgnscid with Import except for one. Don't even know how to start debugging. This was on Windows 10 by the way but I think I should stop trying to run before I can walk. lol !! We live and learn! I'll re-write my suggestion for pgnscid. Thanks Moss ___ Scid-users mailing list Scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scid-users
Re: [Scid-users] Documentation
Hi It is well possible I'll get used reading tcl files so I may well be slowly able to help a little in programming too. But we'll have to see. So I intend to read, in no particular order, the entire in-built help system and offer changes to bring it up to date. (Anything between angle brackets or guillemets <...> is something to be clicked on with the mouse. Anything between quotes "..." is something to be typed in.) For example, Pgnscid: pgnscid was a stand-alone command line program to convert a pgn database into a scid database. It has been removed as it is no longer required. Pgn files or G-zipped pgn files can be imported into an existing database. For example, suppose you had a G-zipped collection of rook endings in the file Rook_Endings.pgn.gz and wanted to convert this into a scid database then do - - (Save dialog pops up) - "Rook_Endings.si4" - to create the empty database then do - - - (another window pop up) - This imports the database and saves it immediately. == Thanks Moss (my nickname by the way!) If you think screen shots would help I'd be happy to make these for the wiki ___ Scid-users mailing list Scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scid-users
[Scid-users] Documentation
Hi, It's me again. Just want to introduce myself properly and say how I intend to help with the documentation. I'm 66, retired from the North Sea Oilfields and never done any never done any programming. Documentation would seem to be the best way for me to contribute to the scid project. For many years I would not touch Windows and used Debian based systems and then OpenBSD so I was delighted when Brian Callaghan ported scid to OpenBSD. His first port was when had not been progressed for some time and was still using the 3rd generation database system i.e. ".si3" index files etc. I was finding it difficult as a user restarting chess after 27 years away from the game. So I switched to Windows and the fork Scid vs. PC and 4th generation databases. I'm well chuffed you've taken up development again and I can move back to OpenBSD. (I keep my databases on a FAT32 drive so that they can be read and written by both operating systems.) In the OpenBSD project a lack of proper documentation is considered to be a serious bug. Everything there defaults to very carefully crafted and kept up to date man pages in the base operating system. External ports are another matter. I know very well that lagging documentation is par for the course in all Linux systems. So it is splendid that you folks have got Scid under development again. I think what I should do is to offer suggestions for updating the in-built help system to reflect the present situation and perhaps give the same in the wiki but add annotated screen-shots. Must go. I am summoned. I'll be back either here or on a wiki page. Cheers Moss ___ Scid-users mailing list Scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scid-users

[Scid-users] Contribute to Wiki?
Hi, Just joined scid-users. I use Scid a lot and I'd like to be able to contribute to the wiki. Is this the place to put corrections? This link is broken on page https://sourceforge.net/p/scid/wiki/Contribute/ : https://sourceforge.net/p/scid/wiki/[LeaveComment] (Not Found) These links are broken https://sourceforge.net/p/scid/wiki/GetResources/ : http://www.nowinchess.com/games.php (Not Found) http://www.looiseschaak.be/downloads/scid/TWIC.zip (DNS not resolved) http://www.hoflink.com/~npollock/40H.html (Not Found) Thanks Moss PS It cost me a deal of trouble to find an email address to post this to in the first place!
