Found this interview while taking a break and idling around. It's an interview
with Braga about Trek from 2007. What I find interesting is his comments about
the last ep of "Enterprise" being an admitted failure. The comment that it
"pissed off the cast" is interesting too. And while I always like shows that
have the nerve to upset the status quo, the odd fascination to kill off
Trip--and then handle it so badly--just puzzles me...

*

"I do have some regrets about that final episode [of "Enterprise"]. What we
were trying to do was send a valentine to all the Star Trek showsbut it was
languid. I don’t know if it fully delivered and it really pissed off the cast."

VegasCon 07 - Braga Reflects On A Life With Trek
August 12, 2007
by Anthony Pascale

Brannon Braga was one of the few Trek writer/producers to appear at this year’s
Creation Las Vegas Star Trek Convention. Braga started off almost reticent,
telling the crowd "it has been many years and so I am a little nervous." The
veteran of Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise made it clear that although
Trek was an ‘amazing experience’ which occupied most of his adult life, he was
not involved with Trek anymore and saw the con as a ‘nostalgic experience.’
After that, the Trek veteran’s appearance took on the nature of an exit
interview with Braga inviting the crowd to get it off their chests:

I wanted to stop by to say hi to you guys and to ask any last lingering
questions you had. This may be the last one I do so this is your chance to get
out you final gripes and questions.

Wouldn’t change a thing…well maybe some things

Braga’s time as a writer/producer with Trek goes all the way to 4th season of
Star Trek: The Next Generation and continued with 104 episode writing credits
(more than any other Trek writer) for TNG, Voyager and Enterprise. He also
co-wrote the first two TNG feature films (Generations and First Contact) along
with Ron Moore. During his tenure there were certainly highs such as the finale
of TNG ("All Good Things") and First Contact, as well as lows (who can forget
Voyager’s Janeway and Paris evolve into lizard creatures episode "Threshold").
Braga was asked if he had any regrets and if he had a chance what would he do
differently. His reply..

I honestly have to say that creatively probably nothing. There are certain
episodes that are really stinky that I wish I hadn’t done, but how can I go
back and change that. There were also episodes that turned out great that we
thought were going to be terrible.

However, in subsequent questions the writer did seem to voice some regrets. For
example when talking about the controversial season finale of Enterprise
("These Are The Voyages"), Braga seems to dislike it as much as most of the
fans:

I do have some regrets about that final episode. It didn’t quite creatively
align with the rest of the season. ….The final episode was very controversial
and I do have some regrets about it. What we were trying to do was send a
valentine to all the Star Trek shows. Enterprise just happened to be the show
on at the time and it turns out the episode was a failure. It had some great
stuff init and it was a cool concept, but it was languid. I don’t know if it
fully delivered and it really pissed off the cast. It was a hybrid show. Rick
[Berman] and I were involved in the franchise for years (Rick for 18 - me for
15). We felt like we wanted to send a valentine to the show, but I do concur it
was not a complete success.

One controversial aspect of the finale however, Braga has no regrets for…

It was the final episode, we knew the series was over and we could do anything
we wanted. Trip was always my favorite character on the show and I wanted to….I
just wanted to kill him. I cant give you a coherent response. We wanted to do
something that had emotional impact and had consequences which is something we
were never allowed to do.

Braga also seems to agree with most fans regarding the direction Enterprise
went once h

Yeah, same here. The early fights aren't that good either--even those with
McLeod. But I cut them a break because the show was new and needed time to
grow. And, back then, the kind of hyper realistic exciting martial arts work
we're used to now wasn't that common. It was a little while yet before the men
who trained Keanu and company for "The Matrix", Jet Li, and others took the
stage.

Keith, that's the only downside of this, the decision to air these
weaker eps. I've still been in this since nine (busy catching up on news

The Watcher intoduction ep really came across as a lot cheesier than I

Well, this is something good on SciFi. They're running an all-day marathon of
the "Highlander" TV series. It started this morning and runs until after
midnight EST. Unfortunately, since it's only one day, they're only going to get
through season two, which is in my opinion the weakest overall season in the
series. That's when they killed Tessa, and for a long time Duncan started doing
good deeds and fighting petty problems like some kind of immortal "Renegade".
After Tessa's death, for example, is an ep where Duncan fights a druglord in
the 'hood, liberating all the scared black folk...one where he helps a black
immortal who was a slave back in the day learn to get over his hatred of white
people...and an ep where Sheena Easton guests stars as a terrorist immortal
from Duncan's past. Easton tries to kill newly immortal Richie in the show, and
the actors are so terribly bad with a sword it's laughable. Ugh! It was obvious
the creators lost fo! cus for a while, as the pedestrian wandering hero angle
overshadowing the mystical aspects of the Immortals. There's a couple of bright
spots, such as the return of Amanda later tonight, but too bad they won't be
showing anything after season two.

Oh--they are airing the movie "Highlander: The Source" in the middle of the
marathon tonight. Trust me: don't bother watching. It stinks.

AP News

LONDON — Michelle Obama has done what few others have managed — getting Queen
Elizabeth II to break protocol. The first lady arrived Wednesday with President
Barack Obama. After separate meetings on the eve of the G-20 summit, the couple
attended an evening reception for world leaders hosted by the queen.

Mrs. Obama clearly made an impression with the 82-year-old monarch — so much
that the smiling queen strayed from protocol and put her arm around the first
lady in a rare public show of affection.

It was the first time Mrs. Obama — who is nearly a foot taller — had met the
queen. The first lady also embraced her.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman who asked not to be identified because of palace
policy said he could not remember the last time that the queen had displayed
such public affection with a first lady or dignitary.

"It was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection," he said. "We don't
issue instructions on not touching the queen."

When the former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating put his arm around the
queen in 1992, the tabloids dubbed him the "Lizard of Oz." When his successor,
John Howard, was accused of doing the same, a spokesman insisted: "We firmly
deny that there was any contact whatsoever." In 2007, President Bush gave the
queen a sly wink during a visit she paid to the United States.

The Daily Mail said the "two women clearly took to each other."

Wednesday's reception was followed by a dinner at Prime Minister Gordon Brown's
Downing Street home, where the leaders' spouses were joined by notable British
women, including "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling and Olympic gold medal
runner Kelly Holmes.

"Michelle walks in and she is as she seems," Holmes told reporters Thursday.
"So warm, engaging, a beautiful, beautiful lady — and I quickly got my photo in
the middle of her and Sarah Brown," the prime minister's wife.

Mrs. Obama also seemed to win over the often feral British press.

The last time a first lady made such a hit in Britain was last year with French
President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, the former fashion model wife and songwriter
Carla Bruni. But on Thursday, London's Times newspaper wrote "Carla who?"

The BBC described Mrs. Obama as her husband's co-star rather than supporting
act — appropriate for a Harvard-educated lawyer.

"She seems to be a good role model," said onlooker Rebecca Smith, who waited
outside Buckingham Palace Wednesday to catch a glimpse of the Obamas.

"A strong, intelligent woman, I think she'll go down very well here," Smith
told the BBC. "Michelle Obama has a strong aura about her, a bit like
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis."

Mrs. Obama attended a rehearsal at the Royal Opera House on Thursday with the
other spouses and guests. The program included music by Handel and a dance
performance by

[scifinoir2] OT: Queen Elizabeth Displays Rare Public Affection for Michelle Obama

2009-04-02 Thread Keith Johnson

Well! Old Queenie showed little emotion and showed Michelle some love! What a
funny world when a handshake or arm put around another person is big news!
The best I've ever seen though, was way back in the late '80s or early '90s
when the Queen came to the US.  She was meeting some regular folk-I want to say
it was back in Dallas--and an older black woman grabbed Elizabeth and gave her
a big hug! It was great: just like you'd expect from your aunt or grandma. Talk
about a meeting of cultures.

And I will say, it is reasons like this why it's important for people of color
to be in positions of power. Not that the Obama's are nothing more than their
skin--they're both accomplished and admirable way beyond that. But when was the
last time a black ballet troupe in London was rolled out to entertain
dignitaries? The Alvin Ailey group and Sweet Honey in the Rock have already
performed at the White House for the Obamas, which is cool.  What a great
opportunity to showcase even more the culture and accomplishments of Africans
wherever we may be.

And funny, they say the press has lost interest in Carla Bruni--and Michelle
Obama didn't even have to take her clothes off or cut an album to get
attention!

The program included music by Handel and a dance
performance by Ballet Black, a troupe set up to give performing opportunities
to black and Asian classical dancers.

Wearing a bright blue dress by Jason Wu — who designed her inauguration gown —
Mrs. Obama posed for photographs with Sarah Brown, Therese Rein, wife of
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso's wife
Chikako Aso, and Laureen Harper, who is married to Canadian Prime Minister
Stephen Harper, on the stage of the opera house.

Mrs. Obama had other events in London planned for later Thursday. She visited a
cancer center with other spouses Wednesday.

Forward from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blackscifihorrorfantasyclub/:

Has anyone here checked out the Black Age of Comics movement which deals with
graphic novels, comic books, games, & etc. that are created or derived from
the Black or African experience? It has an annual convention in
Philadelphia,, www.eccacc.com, the original one one in Chicago,
www.dablackage.blogspot.com, and one starting up in Atlanta htis summer called
ONYX CON. Plus one can search out The Museum of Black SUper Heroes as well.

I was hoping that this club could have some type of appreciative nexus with
those of us dealing with the Black Age Movment. And vice versa.

Nope. Not my nature to blindly have faith in anything or anyone.
