Many an architect has dreamed up visionary plans for city centers, but few
have actually seen their designs come to fruition in a real live urban
setting. And while many such unbuilt concepts are technically viable, others
are wacky, fanciful or downright bizarre. These 13 retro urban design ideas
for the future, from perfectly symmetrical egalitarian communities to the
egotistical demands of a deranged dictator, will probably never become
reality – and in many cases, we’re better off that way.
  Gillette’s Metropolis

 (images via:
 io9http://io9.com/5570345/how-an-imaginary-city-changed-the-twentieth-century
 )

Before his name was inextricably connected to safety razors, King Camp
Gillette had a utopian vision for the future which revolved around a
waterfall-powered tiered city he dubbed ‘Metropolis’. All residents of this
imagined city would have access to the same amenities including rooftop
gardens in the perfectly round, precisely divided multi-functional buildings
in which they would live, work, play and eat. Like many of Gillette’s ideas,
the design never went anywhere, but it’s notably similar to many very modern
21st-century concepts for sustainable urban centers.
 Broadacre City

 (images via:
 mediaarchitecture.athttp://www.mediaarchitecture.at/architekturtheorie/broadacre_city/2009_broadacre_city_en.shtml
 )

Like Gillette’s Metropolis, Broadacre City was meant to be an urban utopia.
But when renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright imagined the picture-perfect
society of tomorrow, he saw not highly compact and efficient high-rises, but
sprawling self-sustainable homesteads. Originally conceived in 1932,
Broadacre City puts each homeowner in a self-built single-family home on an
entire acre of land brimming with gardens. Complete with multiple
carshttp://weburbanist.com/transportationper family, it would almost be an
accurate prediction of future suburbia if
not for the airplane in every front yard.
 Atomurbia

 (image via:
 io9http://io9.com/5534528/atomurbia-the-most-spaced-out-neighborhood-in-america
 )

If giving each and every family in America an acre of land seems
impossible, imagine what life would be like if ‘Atomurbia’ had come to pass.
This concept, published in a 1947 issue of Life magazine, detailed how to
atomic bomb-proof America by spreading the population across the land in a
geometric grid and relocating all industry into underground structures so
that any single bomb would do a minimum of damage. The whole plan would have
cost a measly 5 trillion dollars in today’s currency, and the authors –
atomic scientists from Chicago – thought it could be pulled off within a
 decade.
 Hotel Attraction

 (images via: wikimedia commonshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Attraction
 )

Antoni Gaudi’s architecture defines Barcelona, Spain even today with its
fluid curves, reflective surfaces and organic shapes – but it would stick
out like a sore thumb in the comparatively staid cityscape of Manhattan.
Perhaps that’s what he had in mind for ‘Hotel Attraction’, commissioned in
1908 and also known as the Grand Hotel. The rounded, spaceship-like form
would have risen in the exact spot where the Twin Towers of the World Trade
Center were later built, but the idea was ultimately abandoned. Gaudi’s
unrealized design was actually considered as a
 possibilityhttp://www.sinehead.com/Gaudi2.htmlfor the Ground Zero memorial
after the attacks of September 11th, 2001.
 Welthauptstadt

 (images via: wikimedia
 commonshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welthauptstadt_Germania
 )

We all know that Adolf Hitler had many an ambitious plan that (thankfully)
never came to pass – but few are aware of ‘Welthauptstadt’ (German for
‘World Capital’), the Fuhrer’s design for a new Berlin to be constructed
after his expected victory in World War II. Taking elements from other
empires around the world, Hitler imagined a broad ‘Avenue of Victory’ down
the center as well as his very own ‘Arch of Triumph’. A test structure
constructed in 1938 to determine whether Berlin’s marshy ground could have
even held up such heavy Romanesque architecture (verdict: nope) still stands
 today.

Las Vegas, NV -- Eleven members of an all female gang have been arrested
after police say they went on a violent crime spree.

The women, ranging in age from 15 to 21 are part of a gang called the Lady
 Maccz.

Police say they dressed in pink and most met while attending Las Vegas
High School. They operated as a group for added force.

They used it to their advantage, says Sgt. Anthony Longo of Metro's gang
detail. They used that wolf pack mentality and overcame the victims in a
 brutal way.

The female gang allegedly stole an SUV on May 14 and then over the next
several days, used the SUV in a string of violent robberies and burglaries.

Metro says they walked into several clothing stores, grabbing clothes and
then forcing their way passed clerks to their stolen getaway vehicle.

One clerk says he was punched and choked. In another instance, an eight
month old pregnant woman says she was shoved to the ground.

These girls were willing to punch and knock over a visibly pregnant woman
causing her to have to go to the hospital for monitoring for several hours,
says Metro officer Dan Woodard. These girls were obviously willing to
raise the level of violence to accomplish their goal.

Police call them a hybrid gang. A newer trend in which gangs don't
operate in a specific turf making them harder to track.

All 11 of the women believed to be involved have been arrested. Six are
juveniles under the age of 18.

Las Vegas, NV -- Eleven members of an all female gang have been arrested
after police say they went on a violent crime spree.

The women, ranging in age from 15 to 21 are part of a gang called the
 Lady Maccz.

Police say they dressed in pink and most met while attending Las Vegas
High School. They operated as a group for added force.

They used it to their advantage, says Sgt. Anthony Longo of Metro's
gang detail. They used that wolf pack mentality and overcame the victims in
 a brutal way.

Well they said that it was 12 of them lead by a single leader so I guess
you can call it a wolfpack. The back story to this story has to be very
intriguing. The newscaster said that they were pitting rival gangs against
each other to boost their power. Some body has been watching Scarface. :)

thanks man.  yes, i prefer plasma because it has a 600mhz refresh rate...if u
are into sports (as i am) u have 2 watch it on plasma.  lcd at it's best is
120mhz (some just 60 and a couple are now 240) are still slower than 600mhz.
plus the added benefit is that the plasma has such richer color than an lcd.
those bulbs behind the lcd cause's it 2 blur out some of the darker colors, but
plasma gives you those deep rich blacks, and bright yellows.  plus, it's a hell
of a lot lighter 2 hoist up.

If you own one of these devices:

http://www.netflix.com/NetflixReadyDevices?trkid=921401lnkctr=mh_nfrdlnkce=nrd-ohmlnkce=ttwisnittv

Follow the instructions on your device to get an activation code.
Your computer and device must both be connected to the Internet to activate.

I admit those instructions aren't as helpful as I would like them to be. I use
my Viao laptop as my blu-ray player so I don't know where the activation code
would be.

But, for instance, to connect via the Wii console, Netflix sent me a disk. I
inserted the disk and simply followed the steps that showed up on my television
screen. Easy as pie.

That option does not appear to be available for the blu-ray players.

[scifinoir2] The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

2010-09-01 Thread Kelwyn
I am going to a reading by Rebecca Skloot tonight. Skloot is the author of
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The Immortal Life is the fascinating tale of Henrietta Lacks, a black woman
who died impoverished and in horrific pain from her cervical cancer (and the
treatment she received in the segregated ward at John Hopkins University), her
life, her death but especially her remarkable HeLa cells that have become the
go-to line for scientific research: HeLa cells have been used to help develop
polio vaccine, cancer medication, cloning and genetic hybrids.

Before the HeLa cells came along, scientists could not keep a continuous cell
line alive in the lab. The HeLa cells not only survive - they strive. These
cells are so aggressive they hitch rides on dust in the air.

One strand of Skloot's book is about her efforts to locate Lacks' relatives.
Lack's daughter, Deborah, could not comprehend the notion that her dead
mother's cells had been cloned and was troubled by notions of thousands of
replicants of her mother alive and about in the world.

Millions have been made from the HeLa cells but, alas, none by the Lack Family.

A movie by the dream team of Oprah Winfrey and Alan Ball (True Blood) is in
the works.

Right. Some of the newest, top-of-the-line LCD TVs from Sony and Samsung come
with the LED backlights that help reduce the light bleed through, and hence
give them darker blacks. But even then, all but the absolute newest (and most
expensive) still can't match the blacks of plasma. And you're right that the
240 mhz refresh rate is the best LCDs can do. I also find that, like
audiophiles who prefer the warmer sound of older equipment, I like the
warmer look of plasmas. Some LCDs look almost too sharp, too artificial.

Keith,

thanks man. yes, i prefer plasma because it has a 600mhz refresh rate...if u
are into sports (as i am) u have 2 watch it on plasma. lcd at it's best is
120mhz (some just 60 and a couple are now 240) are still slower than 600mhz.
plus the added benefit is that the plasma has such richer color than an lcd.
those bulbs behind the lcd cause's it 2 blur out some of the darker colors, but
plasma gives you those deep rich blacks, and bright yellows. plus, it's a hell
of a lot lighter 2 hoist up.

Yes it is. The wife and I streamed The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo the other
night and it was awesome. Also the blu-ray plan on Netflix is a lifesaver too.
I have The Book of Eli, Kick Ass and The Good, The Bad and The Weird sitting at

BTW I just finished setting up my surround sound in the man cave and I'm ready
to disturb the neighbors.

i have an LG too.  once u turn it on hit the home key on the remote.  mine is
blue.  u should see 7 cubes suspended in water.  they should be labeled:
Movie - Photo - Music - Home Link - Netcast - Input - Setup.
it is 'Netcast' that u want 2 scroll to. after u hit enter, u should see:
Netflix - Vudu - CinemaNow - MLB.tv - YouTube Videos - Pandora - napster -
Picasa - AccuWeather.com.

click on Netflix.  also, on your laptop go to:
www.netflix.com/LG
that is where u will start your free 30 trial.

Fate.

Its about time that this movie was done. There are others out there that
have benefited from poor souls like Henrietta Lacks.

I am going to a reading by Rebecca Skloot tonight. Skloot is the author of
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The Immortal Life is the fascinating tale of Henrietta Lacks, a black
woman who died impoverished and in horrific pain from her cervical cancer
(and the treatment she received in the segregated ward at John Hopkins
University), her life, her death but especially her remarkable HeLa cells
that have become the go-to line for scientific research: HeLa cells have
been used to help develop polio vaccine, cancer medication, cloning and
 genetic hybrids.

Before the HeLa cells came along, scientists could not keep a continuous
cell line alive in the lab. The HeLa cells not only survive - they strive.
These cells are so aggressive they hitch rides on dust in the air.

One strand of Skloot's book is about her efforts to locate Lacks'
relatives. Lack's daughter, Deborah, could not comprehend the notion that
her dead mother's cells had been cloned and was troubled by notions of
thousands of replicants of her mother alive and about in the world.

Millions have been made from the HeLa cells but, alas, none by the Lack
 Family.

A movie by the dream team of Oprah Winfrey and Alan Ball (True Blood)
 is in the works.

Robots are intrinsically fascinating, especially now that we almost have the
technological http://weburbanist.com/technology capability to create what
once was only a science fiction fan’s dream. We’re not quite there, however,
and so we continue to give life to our imaginations of a robot inhabited
world through the most permanent means at our disposal: ink. Here are some
of the most creative and well done robot tattoos around:

Vintage http://weburbanist.com/vintageretro toy robots are sparking

There’s plenty of room to get creative with robot designs… like this ominous

Much of popular culture involving robots deals with the differences between
man and machine, with a main focus being emotion. Can robots learn to feel?
Whether they can or not in reality, they certainly can in our tattoos.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland | Wed Sep 1, 2010 4:13pm EDT

(Reuters) - A man carrying a gun and possibly with explosives strapped to
his body took a small number of hostages in the Discovery Channel
headquarters building in suburban Washington on Wednesday.

Right now we have an unconfirmed number of hostages, a small number of
hostages that are with the suspect at this point, Tom Manger, Montgomery
County police chief, told reporters.

The man entered the building wearing what appeared to be metallic canister
devices on his front and back and he pulled out a hand gun, Manger said.

The man told everyone to just stay still, and he has remained on the first
floor area, he said.

It was unconfirmed whether a shot had been fired or whether there were any
injuries, Manger said.

A U.S. law enforcement official said he believed the hostage-taker was named
James Lee. A man called James Lee of San Diego was arrested in February 2008
after throwing money into the air in a protest outside the Discovery
building, the Montgomery County Gazette reported that year.

Police sealed off the area around the building and SWAT teams were at the
scene in the suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland. The building was ordered
evacuated and children were removed from a day-care center.

He appears to have some sort of explosive device on his person, police
Captain Paul Starks told reporters. He said the police were in contact with
the suspect, who had made some demands that police would not go into.

Police were watching the suspect on the building's closed-circuit security
system.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Discovery employees posted updates on the situation on Twitter including a
link to a website,savetheplanetprotest.com/, in which demands are made
against Discovery to cover environmental issues. It was not confirmed that
these demands were made by the man barricaded in the building.

Police in nearby Takoma Park, Maryland, sent out an e-mail to residents that
said, an unknown, armed Asian male (is) barricaded in the building with at
least one hostage.

Montgomery County Police Corporal Dan Friz said of the suspect: His
concerns are with the Discovery Corporation right now. He would not go into
further details.

A reporter from the local ABC affiliate said he saw an ambulance crew wheel
a gurney into the building about an hour after the incident began at 1 p.m.
EDT, but there was no official word of casualties.

Discovery Communications says it reaches 1.5 billion subscribers in more
than 180 countries with the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science
Channel and Planet Green networks.

Among the demands to Discovery on savetheplanetprotest.com were calls for an
end to programs promoting War and those encouraging the birth of any more
parasitic human infants. Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the
non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population, the website said.

A U.S. law enforcement official said he believed the hostage-taker was
named James Lee. A man called James Lee of San Diego was arrested in
February 2008 after throwing money into the air in a protest outside the
Discovery building, the Montgomery County Gazette reported that year.

Police in nearby Takoma Park, Maryland, sent out an e-mail to residents
that said, an unknown, armed Asian male (is) barricaded in the building
 with at least one hostage.

Among the demands to Discovery on savetheplanetprotest.com were calls for
an end to programs promoting War and those encouraging the birth of any
more parasitic human infants. Saving the Planet means saving what's left
of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population, the website
 said.

[scifinoir2] Best female villain?

In your opinion which character is the best movie and or comic / book
character?

I've always been partial to Mystique.

She got hosed in the X-Men films, but in the comics she was always a
very Machiavellian manipulator.
