Re: [SLUG] no '/dev/snd' with pulseaudio
The basic problem is that I have no /dev/snd and xfce4-mixer & alsamixer only show 'master controls'. Boot msgs include "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated -- done" .. but there is no /dev/snd, and "Setting up ALSA --done; none loaded". I also keep getting a red error msg flashing past as it boots which, from memory, says something about alsamixer .. but the basic problem is no /dev/snd .. 'vim /var/log/boot' gives me '(Nothing has been logged yet.)' I don't understand why. I'm not a comp.sci grad ... what would an init.d wrapper script look like ? Hi, I have just installed lenny on a machine with 800MHz AMD Duron chip, 1Gb RAM, 63.3 GbB /usr, & 320Gb /home yet get hanging and/or rebooting after opening applications in two screens (usually update/upgrade as root and mutt or a browser). [SLUG] Conflict between deb's & cvs
[Erm .. the previous email was sent from Misia's account, not mine.] Hi, I had a conflict between current debs and their deprecated cvs versions. Advice from various sources was to delete the cvs versions so I deleted libavcodeccvs51 libavutilcvs49 libpostproccvs51 libswscalecvs0 I located the latest non-cvs versions in the debian depository and installed them manually [dpkg -i]. I found the latest cvs versions at http://debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/f/ffmpegcvs/ffmpegcvs.php .. which I believe is Marillat's UCLA depository, and also downloaded them manually. The latest version is generally '20080610' .. [SLUG] Computer Scientists Take the "Why" out of WiFi

Kane, 858-534-3262 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] COMPUTER SCIENTISTS TAKE THE "WHY" OUT OF WIFI Why isn't my wireless working? Is yours? - Computer Scientists Respond "People expect WiFi to work, but there is also a general understanding that it's just kind of flakey," said Stefan Savage, one of the UCSD computer science professors who led development of an automated, enterprise-scale WiFi troubleshooting system for UCSD's computer science building. The system is described in a paper presented last week in Kyoto, Japan at ACM SIGCOMM, one of the world's premier networking conferences. "If you have a wireless problem in our building, our system automatically analyzes the behavior of your connection - each wireless protocol, each wired network service and the many interactions between them. In the end, we can say 'it's because of this that your wireless is slow or has stopped working' - and we can tell you immediately," said Savage. For humans, diagnosing problems in the now ubiquitous 802.11-based wireless access networks requires a huge amount of data, expertise and time. In addition to the myriad complexities of the wired network, wireless networks face the additional challenges of shared spectrum, user mobility and authentication management. Finally, the interaction between wired and wireless networks is itself a source of many problems. "Wireless networks are hooked on to the wired part of the Internet with a bunch of 'Scotch tape and bailing wire' - protocols that really weren't designed for WiFi," explained Savage. "If one of these components has a glitch, you may not be able to use the Internet even though the network itself is working fine." There are so many moving pieces, so many things you can not see. Within this soup, everything has to work just right. When it doesn't, trying to identify which piece wasn't working is tough and requires sifting through a lot of data. For example, someone using the microwave oven two rooms away may cause enough interference to disrupt your connection. "Today, if you ask your network administrator why it takes minutes to connect to the network or why your WiFi connection is slow, they're unlikely to know the answer," explained Yu-Chung Cheng, a computer science Ph.D. student at UCSD and lead author on the paper. "Many problems are transient - they're gone before you can even get an admin to look at them - and the number of possible reasons is huge," explained Cheng, who recently defended his dissertation and will join Google this fall. "Few organizations have the expertise, data or tools to decompose the underlying problems and interactions responsible for transient outages or performance degradations," the authors write in their SIGCOMM paper. The computer scientists from UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering presented a set of modeling techniques for automatically characterizing the source of such problems. In particular, they focus on data transfer delays unique to 802.11 networks - media access dynamics and mobility management latency. The UCSD system runs 24 hours a day, constantly churning through the flood of data relevant to the wireless network and catching transient problems. "We've created a virtual wireless expert who is always at work," said Cheng. Within the UCSD Computer Science building, all the wireless help-desk issues go through the new automated system, which has been running for about 9 months. The data collection has been going on for almost 2 years. One of the big take-away lessons is that there is no one thing that affects wireless network performance. Instead, there are a lot of little things that interact and go wrong in ways you might not anticipate. "I look at this as an engineering effort. In the future, I think that enterprise wireless networks will have sophisticated diagnostics and repair capabilities built in. How much these will draw from our work is hard to tell today. You never know the impact you are going to have when you do the work," said Savage. "In the meantime, our system is the ultimate laboratory for testing new wireless gadgets and new approaches to building wireless systems. We just started looking at WiFi-based Voice-O

[SLUG] Re. Etch on ibook
Alan, I also made the Great Migration from Feisty to Etch with xfce to find greater stability and ease of use. Etch has an automatic powerdown with an adjustable time-delay (somewhere - I'm still adjusting from gnome), and a 'suspend' option at login. I've been pleasantly surprised to have to revive via password a number of times. From http://www.rdegraaf.nl/index.asp?sND_ID=291639 At the moment of writing, hibernate works, and is placed on the s2disk whitelist. In contrast, s2ram is not whitelisted. Checking 's2ram --force' results in a suspend to memory, but some things did not restore correctly such as network, etc. However, /etc/acpi/sleep.sh does work for me. Test it for yourself from the commandline: # /etc/acpi/sleep.sh .. and http://thpinfo.com/2006/docs/debian-linux-macbook-headphone-after-suspend.html Interesting. http://blog.mondragon.cc/pages/tp-t42 suggests installing the 'acpi-support' package. apt-get reccomends also installing 'laptop-mode-tools' .. Apparently there is a 'sleep' hot-key (Fn+Esc), see http://www-spht.cea.fr/en/Images/Pisp/jbouttier/d420-linux.php Another way is to add a kernel option .. http://www.student.tue.nl/Q/j.f.berndsen/debian/ Regards, Adam Bogacki, [EMAIL PROTECTED] sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

GPG key A8B77238. Once you've '/home/user/.asoundrc' with dmix set up, it's not reallly an issue. Personally, after trying them all out I settled on using mplayer from the command line. It operates faster and more efficiently in terms of memory than any GUI based app, most of which use ALSA anyway. Eg, [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Media/Audio$ mplayer -playlist *.ram [or .wav or .mp3 or whatever] MPlayer 2:0.99+1.0pre8-0ubuntu8 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team .. [and so on] .. Getting you head around 'man mplayer' can be a bit daunting at first but in practice you only need a few relevant commands unless you wish to become an mplayer guru. It's a good idea to have a comprehensive codec selection and update frequently, simple on debian based systems. The difficult bit can be getting the initial *.ram or .asx files for streaming media, and staying in touch with changes on their websites. Mueller, 858-534-8564 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] San Diego Supercomputer Team Backs Firefighters in Recent "Horse" Wildfires Firefighters facing fast-spreading wildfires, especially in remote areas where communications and other resources are scarce, can now add "cyberinfrastructure" to their firefighting arsenals. Such combined hardware and software proved useful in the recent "Horse Fire" in California's Cleveland National Forest, when experts from the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, responded to the urgent request of state firefighters for quick and reliable wireless communication among widespread teams. That communication was speedily provided by the High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN), a resource supported by the National Science Foundation and staffed by researchers at the SDSC, UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and San Diego State University. Within a day, SDSC experts were on the scene, establishing high-speed wireless data links. HPWREN teams are no strangers to wildfires and catastrophes, but this was the first time that vital communication lifelines used Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) technology - allowing wireless links from the Horse Fire command post to the Internet and to deployed firefighting teams. Hans-Werner Braun, principal investigator on the program, and SIO seismologist Frank Vernon, co-principal investigator, lead the SDSC effort for HPWREN, and both recognize the value of cyberinfrastructure in responding to crises. "Reliable communication is absolutely essential in emergencies and disasters," said Braun, "especially when response teams may be spread over a wide area, where some forms of communication aren't available or won't work. The wireless links to the Internet we provide through the HPWREN collaboration can keep everybody talking and responding effectively - a practical, lifesaving application of our research that we find especially gratifying." Vernon agrees. "Although our primary roles are research and education, very important in themselves, we never forget that the ultimate aim of science, scholarship and study is improving people's lives - sometimes even saving lives." To help support the firefighter's command post, the HPWREN team worked closely with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the U.S. Forest Service, Viejas tribal leaders, and the San Diego Sheriff's Department. The HPWREN team's contributions to the fire-fighting effort did not go unnoticed. The National Science Foundation featured the team on its news page, in a story titled "Communication Team Erects Lifeline for Firefighters Battling California Wildfire" (available here: http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=107121&org=OLPA), footage of the fire and its fighters has been broadcast regionally, and Braun has been interviewed by local television reporters about the participation of the SDSC and HPWREN staffers. "Network connectivity, VoIP, and other technologies - backed up by the phenomenal computing resources available at the SDSC - give firefighters and other first responders fast, reliable tools in a crisis. High-performance wireless technology helps them work smarter and better - and that benefits everybody." I disagree. My 81 yr. old mother is one of my user group. Gizmo just worked, my only problem being "Login Error. No audio output devices are currently available" which I traced via Google to an ubuntu discussion where it emerged that debian (or linux ?) can only handle one audio process at a time. After doing Desktop > Preferences > 'Multimedia Systems Selector' and setting everything to ALSA defaults Gizmo audio worked (but mplayer now does not). I'm not quite sure how to toggle between different audio processes - there must be a way in a multi-threading system. (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=97357&page=10) I'm not evangelical about this - its just the best thing I've seen so far. I've just read the Ekiga Faq by Damien Sandras - previously known as gnome-meeting - which I played with but never got around to buying a web camera for, but which is now optimised for VoIP with plugins allowing video conferencing. [SLUG] Fwd: Xorg --> 'No Core Pointer' ?
Sluggers, having lost cursor function and sound, Google led me to someone who solved a similar problem via 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' and adding psmouse and mousedev to /etc/modules .. strictly in that order. I tried the same, but with less success .. Initially, an error message told me that /dev/mouse could not be found, as specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf [I seem to remember that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 contained two paragraphs on the mouse specifying it as both /dev/psaux and /dev/mouse] Someone suggested changing /dev/mouse in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /dev/input/mice .. so I did. Next I tried 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' but whether it was /dev/mouse, /dev/input/mice, or /dev/psaux in the only mouse defining paragraph it contains, X refused to load with variations on the theme .. No Core Pointer Fatal Server Error: failed to initialise core devices .. which has led me to rediscover the utility of text-based apps such as mutt, lynx, and snownews. One complication may be that I originally configured /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on an MS IntelliMouse but have since switched to an A4TECH wireless optical mouse, model RFSOP-48 (RP-648), in which the receiver acts as a battery (re)charger. It works on my seldom-used XP drive. I modprobed psmouse and mousedev, but can only find psmouse (of the two) in /etc/modules. I went through this what seems like a long time ago with /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and it seems strange having to do it again. I attach the last part of /var/log/Xorg.0/log .. there has to be a simple way to get the core pointer and X server working again. [SLUG] No soundcards found ...
I've been through this before but memory is rusty .. My system is in the process of adapting to Xorg and a number of settings have to be re-adjusted to achieve a Deb unstable system I have taken for granted for what seems like a long time. My system suddenly could not detect my rodent & lost sound. I think I've solved the first via 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' and modprobing psmouse & mousedev to /etc/modules .. but trying the same with sound gave me Tux:~# modprobe snd_intel8x0 Setting up ALSA ...*/etc/init.s/alsa-utils: Warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with error message 'alsactl: load_state: 1236: No soundcards found .. I've seen different variations of the same message in various logs. My Creative soundcard has previously had no problems with detection. Can anyone point me in the right direction ? [SLUG] /dev/mouse & /dev/dsp missing !
Hi, I booted up my Debian unstable distro today only to find the cursor static in center of screen and no sound. Upon checking, the hardware is OK, but I cannot find /dev/mouse as specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and Mplayer gives me the message "audio setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: no such device" Upon checking, /dev/dsp proves to be missing. [SLUG] postgresql-dump probs ..
Hi, I'm having a problem getting Postgresql working properly. There seem to be two problems. The postmaster is not working and the database is in an older format that cannot be read by version 7.4 of PostgreSQL.I have read the 'README.Debian.migration' file but am still confused. I tried apt-removing the older version and apt-reinstalling with no difference. When running 'postgresql-dump' I get the following >> Tux:/root$ psql postgresql-dump -- d >> psql: could not connect to server: [EMAIL PROTECTED]&@ >> Is the server running locally and accepting >> connections on Unix domain socket >> "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"? >> Tux:/root$ > > Also, >> Tux:/etc/postgresql# /etc/init.d/postgresql start >> Starting PostgreSQL database server: postmaster(FAILED) >> ERROR: The database is in an older format that cannot be read by >> version 7.4 of PostgreSQL. >> >> Run postgresql-dump to dump the old database and to reload >> it in the new format. >> *** READ /usr/share/doc/postgresql/README.Debian.migration.gz FIRST! *** >> >> The version 7.4 postmaster cannot be started until >> this is done. > > When I try to get into postgres I get asked for a password, but as I have not yet set up or configured it, there isn't one. >> Tux:/root$ su postgres >> Password: > > I'm aware this is a fairly common procedure but I'm floundering around, the night is late, I'm trying to RTFM, and other priorities call. [SLUG] ltsp: Cannot open devices '/dev/psaux' '/dev/mouse'
Hi, logging in as a user on the server I was given the choice an X or Gnome setup. I chose X and the mouse started to work intermittently and then died. Worse, when I rebooted into into the XP partition it was also stuck firmly in the center of the screen. Error messages include '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/psaux, No such device' and '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: cannot open device /dev/mouse, No such file or directory'. The /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 looks OK, but I'm not sure if I should be looking for a /tmp/XF86Config-4 file. My current /tmp does not contain one. Looking at the filesystem, /dev/psaux exists, but /dev/mouse does not. Output from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 includes "(EE) PreInit failed for input device 'Generic Mouse' (II) Unload Module: 'mouse' (WW) No core pointer registered. No core pointer."
