Re: [SLUG] no '/dev/snd' with pulseaudio

2012-05-06 Thread Adam Bogacki
The basic problem is that I have no /dev/snd and xfce4-mixer & alsamixer
only show 'master controls'.

Boot msgs include "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated -- done" ..
but there is no /dev/snd, and
"Setting up ALSA --done; none loaded". I also keep getting a red error
msg flashing past as it boots
which, from memory, says something about alsamixer .. but the basic
problem is no /dev/snd ..

'vim /var/log/boot' gives me '(Nothing has been logged yet.)'

I don't understand why.

I'm not a comp.sci grad ... what would an init.d wrapper script look like ?

I have the same problem with pulseaudio.

Can anyone advise how to add udevstart to a logon script in debian ?

No, it appears to be the usual spinning disk image - a disk with a
rotating radius
within it - although, if you make allowance for the speed of rotation
you could be right.

Hard to tell, frankly.

Thanks, I have slept on it and this morning discovered

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU/kFreeBSD#cite_note-4

which has some good links.

I might try #debian-kbsd at OFTC, but it is often hard to judge
when these northern-hemispheric folks are up.

Aaargh, in retrospect ..

I read (somewhere) that the the BSD kernel with deb patches could
coexist with debian,

implying they could chosen via GRUB.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OFTC

.. snip ..
No official release of the operating system has yet been made, but
Debian Squeeze (6.0), expected to be frozen in March 2010^[4]
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU/kFreeBSD#cite_note-3> and released
in 2010, aims to support it.

.. suggests I may have been jumping the gun.

My current problem is how to extricate myself from debian hanging before
GDM comes up without having to reinstall. What could be causing that ?

Thanks. I did that but keep getting

Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)
nslProfileInternal.currentProfile

.. when trying to open either of my two old profiles. However I can set up a

The point of the exercise being to transfer bookmarks, it does not serve any
purpose.

Googling by the error msg, I gather the problem lies in permissions. I have
used a working
mozilla profile as a model, but still keep getting the msg.

Can you see any perms errors in the list below ?

[SLUG] iptables error msg

Hi, I keep getting

favor of extrapositioned (`! --option this`).

.. but 'ACCEPT' appears in many places in iptables.

What would it be referring to ?

I have attached my version of iptables (courtesy of Ekiga).

[SLUG] Hanging &/or random reboot probs

2009-07-20 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I have just installed lenny on a machine with 800MHz
AMD Duron chip, 1Gb RAM, 63.3 GbB /usr, & 320Gb /home
yet get hanging and/or rebooting after opening applications
in two screens (usually update/upgrade as root
and mutt or a browser).

My previous etch system with 733 MHz PIII and 733 Mhz RAM
could handle 10 or more screens running various apps at a time.

Any ideas about what I should be looking for ?

[SLUG] A "simple" Deb 501 install ..

2009-07-05 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I have just done a debian 501 netinst but keep getting
grub error msg "Error 15: File not found".I understand the
solution to be rescue mode, chroot /mnt/sysimage, grub-install
--recheck /dev/hda, exit", but have not been able to mount a
rescue mode terminal. Latest reinstall ended with msg "No boot
loader has been installed .. You will need to boot manually
with the vmlinuz kernel on parition /dev/hda1 and
root=/dev/hda1 passed as a kernel argument" .. but grub was
autoinstalled and I keep getting the "Error 15" msg again.
What is a guy to do ?

[SLUG] Configuring a WiFi & cable home network

2008-12-23 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I have the internet cable running to a XH9948 DSE WLAB 802.11g

feeding one WiFi and one cable connection at home.

I have a static account with www.paradise.net.nz.

My desktop has a statically configured card (eth0) to which the cable
previously
connected, and a dynamically configured card (eth1) which I intend to
use with the router.

Both cards are recognised by "ifconfig -a"

WiFi is no problem. I have had eth1 working twice simultaneously with
WiFi using
a combination of

route add 255.255.255.0 dev eth1
dhcpd start eth1
[or "service dhcpd start"]

but on reboot it does not work.

What am I missing here ?

[SLUG] Conflict between deb's & cvs

2008-06-23 Thread Adam Bogacki

[Erm .. the previous email was sent from Misia's account, not mine.]

Hi,

I had a conflict between current debs and their deprecated cvs versions.
Advice from various sources was to delete the cvs versions so I deleted

libavcodeccvs51 libavutilcvs49 libpostproccvs51 libswscalecvs0

I located the latest non-cvs versions in the debian depository
and installed them manually [dpkg -i].

I found the latest cvs versions at

http://debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/f/ffmpegcvs/ffmpegcvs.php

.. which I believe is Marillat's UCLA depository, and also downloaded
them manually. The latest version is generally '20080610' ..

However, installing the cvs's in place of the older deleted pkgs always
gives me the same error msg:

Tohunga:/home/adam/Downloads# dpkg -i
libavcodeccvs51_20080414-0.0_i386.deb

(Reading database ... 317407 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking libavcodeccvs51 (from libavcodeccvs51_20080414-0.0_i386.deb)
...

dpkg: error processing libavcodeccvs51_20080414-0.0_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51', which is also in
package libavcodec51

Errors were encountered while processing:
 libavcodeccvs51_20080414-0.0_i386.deb

'libavcodec.so.51' is a symlink ..

Tohunga:/usr/lib# ls -la libavcodec.so.51
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2008-06-23 11:08 libavcodec.so.51 ->
libavcodec.so.51.50.0

.. as are the *.so.* files for the other cvs pkgs.

Also, trying to use mplayer gives me

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mplayer
mplayer: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavformat.so.51: undefined
symbol: av_crc04C11DB7

At this point I'm not sure what to do next, not wanting to damage the
system.

Can anyone suggest a fix ?

[SLUG] /usr/bin/dpkg returns error code 1

2008-06-08 Thread Adam Bogacki

Hi,

for the last two or three weeks I have been getting the following
error messages,
making it impossible to upgrade or dist-upgrade in a mixed etch/unstable
system .. unless
I use '-f'. I have since commented out non-debian sources but the
problem persists.

After some IRC discussion it was suggested that I have broken cvs pkgs
interfering with apt. I've deleted them but found them automatically
reinstalled

and the problem repeating itself.

I did not manage to show all the error msgs during the IRC session so
I have posted them below

in the hope that someone can diagnose the problem and suggest a fix.

Cheers

Re. "Am I dumb .. " etc.

Nope. You've just seen the light.

I tried ubuntu but went back to Etch .. then sid/lenny ..
because it gave me more flexibility between text & GUI

Nothing beats the original.

[SLUG] Outrageous disaster: Ogg/Vorbis spec taken out of?HTML-5

re all,

i urge you to take act against the exclusion of Ogg/Vorbis/Theora
audio/video streaming technology from the HTML-5 specification: this
exclusion will damage the efficiency of the world wide web in the
coming years by reducing the available protocols and codecs to the few
uncompatible and proprietary ones sold by business companies; at
present time it is clear that Nokia is being responsible of this
outrageous disaster as it untruly referred to Ogg as "proprietary
technology" addressing the W3C board on HTML5
http://www.boingboing.net/2007/12/09/nokia-to-w3c-ogg-is.html

Together with repeated attempts by other commercial companies to turn
down Ogg/Vorbis/Theora FOSS implementation for audio/video streaming,
we are witnessing the manipulation of what it should be a clean
evolution path for the biggest technological platform we all share.

pleasehelp usbuildpressureNOW:
http://rudd-o.com/archives/2007/12/11/removal-of-ogg-vorbis-and-theora-from-html5-an-outrageous-disaster/

the W3C is supposed to be a "neutral" platform for development of
specifications, but on the contrary it seems to listen only to
business interests rather than citizens voices. Let's do everything
possible to recall the attention of civil society organizations to
what is happening, ASAP.

it is our responsability as netizens (citizens of the net) to raise
voices against this continuous ingerence of business interests into
the making of a viable platform for _horizontal_ communication in
civil society, offering an open access to its infrastructure. The
present unefficiency and incompatibility of multimedia communication
online is already the result of competition and unresponsability of
companies racing to impose their closed technologies on the market,
while the online citizens have the right for a common open source
alternative to all possible commercial products because communication
is a human right for all!

thanks for your concern,

la lucha sigue, tambien aqui', no estamos solos!

ciao

COMPUTER SCIENTISTS TAKE THE "WHY" OUT OF WIFI

Why isn't my wireless working? Is yours? - Computer Scientists Respond

"People expect WiFi to work, but there is also a general understanding that
it's just kind of flakey," said Stefan Savage, one of the UCSD computer science
professors who led development of an automated, enterprise-scale WiFi
troubleshooting system for UCSD's computer science building. The system is
described in a paper presented last week in Kyoto, Japan at ACM SIGCOMM, one of
the world's premier networking conferences.

"If you have a wireless problem in our building, our system automatically
analyzes the behavior of your connection - each wireless protocol, each wired
network service and the many interactions between them. In the end, we can say
'it's because of this that your wireless is slow or has stopped working' - and
we can tell you immediately," said Savage.

For humans, diagnosing problems in the now ubiquitous 802.11-based wireless
access networks requires a huge amount of data, expertise and time. In addition
to the myriad complexities of the wired network, wireless networks face the
additional challenges of shared spectrum, user mobility and authentication
management. Finally, the interaction between wired and wireless networks is
itself a source of many problems.

"Wireless networks are hooked on to the wired part of the Internet with a bunch
of 'Scotch tape and bailing wire' - protocols that really weren't designed for
WiFi," explained Savage. "If one of these components has a glitch, you may not
be able to use the Internet even though the network itself is working fine."

There are so many moving pieces, so many things you can not see. Within this
soup, everything has to work just right. When it doesn't, trying to identify
which piece wasn't working is tough and requires sifting through a lot of data.
For example, someone using the microwave oven two rooms away may cause enough
interference to disrupt your connection.

"Today, if you ask your network administrator why it takes minutes to connect
to the network or why your WiFi connection is slow, they're unlikely to know
the answer," explained Yu-Chung Cheng, a computer science Ph.D. student at UCSD
and lead author on the paper. "Many problems are transient - they're gone
before you can even get an admin to look at them - and the number of possible
reasons is huge," explained Cheng, who recently defended his dissertation and
will join Google this fall.

"Few organizations have the expertise, data or tools to decompose the
underlying problems and interactions responsible for transient outages or
performance degradations," the authors write in their SIGCOMM paper.

The computer scientists from UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering presented a
set of modeling techniques for automatically characterizing the source of such
problems. In particular, they focus on data transfer delays unique to 802.11
networks - media access dynamics and mobility management latency.

The UCSD system runs 24 hours a day, constantly churning through the flood of
data relevant to the wireless network and catching transient problems.

"We've created a virtual wireless expert who is always at work," said Cheng.

Within the UCSD Computer Science building, all the wireless help-desk issues go
through the new automated system, which has been running for about 9 months.
The data collection has been going on for almost 2 years.

One of the big take-away lessons is that there is no one thing that affects
wireless network performance. Instead, there are a lot of little things that
interact and go wrong in ways you might not anticipate.

"I look at this as an engineering effort. In the future, I think that
enterprise wireless networks will have sophisticated diagnostics and repair
capabilities built in. How much these will draw from our work is hard to tell
today. You never know the impact you are going to have when you do the work,"
said Savage. "In the meantime, our system is the ultimate laboratory for
testing new wireless gadgets and new approaches to building wireless systems.
We just started looking at WiFi-based Voice-O

[SLUG] Sony memory card not recognised

2007-08-27 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi,

I have a 1Gb Sony Pro Duo memory stick for which I bought
Centifly Card reader CF-RS205 ..

Unlike USB sticks and digital camera, Etch does not detect it.

I've worked through the Flash-Memory-HOWTO and everything
seems in order. I took the Pro Duo card and adapter into the SONY

Two error msgs have appeared, however.

/var/log/boot gives me

mount: according to mtab, procbususb is already mounted on

but on trying to mount it gives me the following msg:

[SLUG] Re. Etch on ibook

2007-04-25 Thread Adam Bogacki
Alan,

I also made the Great Migration from Feisty to Etch with xfce
to find greater stability and ease of use.

Etch has an automatic powerdown with an adjustable time-delay
(somewhere - I'm still adjusting from gnome), and a 'suspend' option
at login.

I've been pleasantly surprised to have to revive via password
a number of times.

From

http://www.rdegraaf.nl/index.asp?sND_ID=291639

At the moment of writing, hibernate works, and is placed on
the s2disk whitelist. In contrast, s2ram is not whitelisted.
Checking 's2ram --force' results in a suspend to memory, but
some things did not restore correctly such as network, etc.
However, /etc/acpi/sleep.sh does work for me. Test it for
yourself from the commandline:

# /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
.. and

http://thpinfo.com/2006/docs/debian-linux-macbook-headphone-after-suspend.html

Interesting.

http://blog.mondragon.cc/pages/tp-t42

suggests installing the 'acpi-support' package. apt-get reccomends
also installing 'laptop-mode-tools' ..

Apparently there is a 'sleep' hot-key (Fn+Esc), see

http://www-spht.cea.fr/en/Images/Pisp/jbouttier/d420-linux.php

Another way is to add a kernel option ..

http://www.student.tue.nl/Q/j.f.berndsen/debian/

The relevant part of /etc/exim4/exim4.conf seems to be

My .muttrc has

Once you've '/home/user/.asoundrc' with dmix set up, it's not reallly an issue.

Personally, after trying them all out I settled on using mplayer from the
command line. It operates faster and more efficiently in terms of
memory than any GUI based app, most of which use ALSA anyway.

Eg,

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Media/Audio$ mplayer -playlist *.ram [or .wav or .mp3
or whatever]
MPlayer 2:0.99+1.0pre8-0ubuntu8 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
.. [and so on] ..

Getting you head around 'man mplayer' can be a bit daunting at first
but in practice you only need a few relevant commands unless you wish
to become an mplayer guru.

It's a good idea to have a comprehensive codec selection and update
frequently, simple on debian based systems.

The difficult bit can be getting the initial *.ram or .asx files
for streaming media, and staying in touch with changes on their websites.

Cheers,

Adam.

You need to set up a .asoundrc using dmix which allows multiple applications.

See
<http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Getting_several_applications_using_the_sound_card_at_the_same_time_%3F>

I you don't have a '/home/user/.asoundrc' create one. Cut 'n paste ..

I've had the same problem.

San Diego Supercomputer Team Backs Firefighters in Recent "Horse" Wildfires

Firefighters facing fast-spreading wildfires, especially in remote areas
where communications and other resources are scarce, can now add
"cyberinfrastructure" to their firefighting arsenals.

Such combined hardware and software proved useful in the recent "Horse Fire"
in California's Cleveland National Forest, when experts from the San Diego
Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego,
responded to the urgent request of state firefighters for quick and reliable
wireless communication among widespread teams.

That communication was speedily provided by the High Performance Wireless
Research and Education Network (HPWREN), a resource supported by the
National Science Foundation and staffed by researchers at the SDSC, UC San
Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and San Diego State
University. Within a day, SDSC experts were on the scene, establishing
high-speed wireless data links.

HPWREN teams are no strangers to wildfires and catastrophes, but this was
the first time that vital communication lifelines used
Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) technology - allowing wireless links
from the Horse Fire command post to the Internet and to deployed
firefighting teams.

Hans-Werner Braun, principal investigator on the program, and SIO
seismologist Frank Vernon, co-principal investigator, lead the SDSC effort
for HPWREN, and both recognize the value of cyberinfrastructure in
responding to crises.

"Reliable communication is absolutely essential in emergencies and
disasters," said Braun, "especially when response teams may be spread over a
wide area, where some forms of communication aren't available or won't work.
The wireless links to the Internet we provide through the HPWREN
collaboration can keep everybody talking and responding effectively - a
practical, lifesaving application of our research that we find especially
gratifying."

Vernon agrees. "Although our primary roles are research and education, very
important in themselves, we never forget that the ultimate aim of science,
scholarship and study is improving people's lives - sometimes even saving
lives."

To help support the firefighter's command post, the HPWREN team worked
closely with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the
U.S. Forest Service, Viejas tribal leaders, and the San Diego Sheriff's
Department.

The HPWREN team's contributions to the fire-fighting effort did not go
unnoticed. The National Science Foundation featured the team on its news
page, in a story titled "Communication Team Erects Lifeline for Firefighters
Battling California Wildfire" (available here:
http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=107121&org=OLPA), footage of
the fire and its fighters has been broadcast regionally, and Braun has been
interviewed by local television reporters about the participation of the
SDSC and HPWREN staffers.

"Network connectivity, VoIP, and other technologies - backed up by the
phenomenal computing resources available at the SDSC - give firefighters and
other first responders fast, reliable tools in a crisis. High-performance
wireless technology helps them work smarter and better - and that benefits
everybody."

10.3.9 +,
Linspire 5.0+, Debian 3.0+, Fedora Core 4.0+, OpenSUSE 10.0+

Your Win using rellies could probably do just as good a job unzipping gizmo,

I disagree. My 81 yr. old mother is one of my user group. Gizmo just
worked, my only problem being "Login Error. No audio output devices are
currently available"
which I traced via Google to an ubuntu discussion where it emerged that
debian
(or linux ?) can only handle one audio process at a time. After doing
Desktop >
Preferences > 'Multimedia Systems Selector' and setting everything to
ALSA defaults
Gizmo audio worked (but mplayer now does not). I'm not quite sure how to
toggle between different audio processes - there must be a way in a
multi-threading system.

I'm not evangelical about this - its just the best thing I've seen so far.

I've just read the Ekiga Faq by Damien Sandras - previously known as
gnome-meeting - which I played with but never got around to buying a web
camera for, but which is now optimised for VoIP with plugins allowing
video conferencing.

It remains optimised for gnome, which I like.

[SLUG] SOLVED: Xorg --> "No Core Pointer !"

2005-10-26 Thread Adam Bogacki
Google led me to a suggestion that the PS/2 mouse and the nvidia driver
don't work with 'the new kernel' (in his case 2.6.7, in mine 2.6.5)
and that you needed to add 'psmouse', 'mousedev', & 'usbhid' to
/etc/modules .. which I duly did.

Simple .. but it took a while to get there. I think I need a break.

Now to work out why ALSA modules are not being loaded and fix sound ...

Thanks Jamie.

dmesg | less

- transcribed & possibly subject to human error ..

/var/log/syslog

.. did not contain search patterns 'mouse' or 'mice'.

As I pointed out previously, it is a USB mouse connecting through
a PS/2 (male) adapter which may explain the apparent confusion
between the two formats .. but which is the appropriate driver or module,
why is it missing, and how do I get cursor function ('core pointer)
back ?

I reproduced the above in my /etc/X11/corg.conf - I was not sure if

so I tried both - with the same result as before

I could not load the usbhid module, nor mousedev - I don't understand
why. This Debain unstable system has been pretty stable so far
apart from the occasional dist-upgrade - probably the reason for
having to work through this again.

[SLUG] Fwd: Xorg --> 'No Core Pointer' ?

2005-10-18 Thread Adam Bogacki
Sluggers, having lost cursor function and sound, Google led me to someone
who solved a similar problem via 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' and
adding psmouse and mousedev to /etc/modules .. strictly in that order.

I tried the same, but with less success ..

Initially, an error message told me that /dev/mouse could not be found,
as specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

[I seem to remember that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 contained two paragraphs
on the mouse specifying it as both /dev/psaux and /dev/mouse]

Someone suggested changing /dev/mouse in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to
/dev/input/mice .. so I did.

Next I tried 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' but whether it was
/dev/mouse, /dev/input/mice, or /dev/psaux in the only mouse defining
paragraph it contains, X refused to load with variations on the theme ..

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
 No Such Device
(EE) Configured Mouse: Cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
(II) Unload module "mouse"
(WW) No core pointer registered
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (types
KEYB ..
(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap.

No Core Pointer

Fatal Server Error: failed to initialise core devices

.. which has led me to rediscover the utility of text-based apps
such as mutt, lynx, and snownews.

One complication may be that I originally configured
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on an MS IntelliMouse but have since switched
to an A4TECH wireless optical mouse, model RFSOP-48 (RP-648), in which the
receiver acts as a battery (re)charger. It works on my seldom-used XP drive.

I modprobed psmouse and mousedev, but can only find psmouse (of the
two) in /etc/modules.

I went through this what seems like a long time ago with
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and it seems strange having to do it again.

I attach the last part of /var/log/Xorg.0/log .. there has to be a simple way
to get the core pointer and X server working again.

Adam Bogacki,

[SLUG] No soundcards found ...

2005-10-17 Thread Adam Bogacki
I've been through this before but memory is rusty ..

My system is in the process of adapting to Xorg and a number of
settings have to be re-adjusted to achieve a Deb unstable system
I have taken for granted for what seems like a long time.

My system suddenly could not detect my rodent & lost sound.

I think I've solved the first via 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'
and modprobing psmouse & mousedev to /etc/modules

.. but trying the same with sound gave me

Tux:~# modprobe snd_intel8x0
Setting up ALSA ...*/etc/init.s/alsa-utils:
Warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with error
message 'alsactl: load_state: 1236: No soundcards found ..

I've seen different variations of the same message in various logs.

My Creative soundcard has previously had no problems with detection.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Not only that, but I don't seem to be able to enter init 3 via

[SLUG] /dev/mouse & /dev/dsp missing !

2005-10-14 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi,
I booted up my Debian unstable distro today only to find
the cursor static in center of screen and no sound.

Upon checking, the hardware is OK, but I cannot find
/dev/mouse as specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and Mplayer gives
me the message

"audio setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: no such device"

Upon checking, /dev/dsp proves to be missing.

What is happening here ? Is this part of some unstable apt-upgrade/update
transition ? Have others had the same problem ?

I'd welcome any constructive advice.

[SLUG] CD-ROM mounting problem

2005-10-11 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I've been trying to use cdcollect but keep getting the message

> Tux:~# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/dvd

I use my DVD drive to play CD's and also have a cdrw.

The relevant /etc/fstab lines are

/dev/fd0/floppy autodefaults,user,noauto
0 0

/dev/hdd/mnt/cdrw iso9660 rw,user,noexec,auto 0
0 0

/dev/hdc/mnt/dvdiso9660 ro,user,noexec,auto 0
0 0

Applications such as xcdroast and cdplayer have no trouble
accessing audio CD's in my DVD drive but other programs give me error
messages such as cowbell's

>Could not mount CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive
>
>Unable to mount the selected volume. The volume is probably in a format
>that cannot be mounted.:
>mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,

.. which gives me

Disk Mounter 2.10.1 applet tells me that
my floppy drive is not mounted, my CD-ROM drive *is not* mounted,
a 20G HD is mounted, my CD-ROM/DVD-ROM *is* mounted, and my usb is
not mounted.

This could be the source of confusion, but what does it mean
and how do I fix it ? Is it confusing a CD-RW with my CD-ROM/DVD-ROM ?

I have attempted to mount it via

Tux:~# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/dvd
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
 dmesg | tail or so

Tux:~# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error

 dmesg | tail or so

.. and ..

Tux:~# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only

I'm sure there is a simple solution staring me in the face
but right now I can't see it.

Constructive suggestions appreciated.

[SLUG] "Your browser does not support script"

2005-09-21 Thread Adam Bogacki
Huh ? I've happily used internet banking with Commonwealth, St. George,
and ANZ using Epiphany, Galeon, Firefox & Mozilla but now find Moz is
the only one working and all the others are giving me variations on the
message that 'Your browser does not support Javascript'.

Yet under all the Preferences I've ticked all the correct boxes explicitly
allowing Javascript. My Gnome network proxy is set to allow direct
internet connection (unlike T*bird & F*fox I never managed to get
it working) and I'm at a loss ...

What am I missing here ?

[SLUG] T*bird loses SMTP connections ... ?

2005-09-08 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I am wondering if it is a bug or a mis-config on my part ...
my default account cannot connect to the server with error message

"Sending of message failed.
Thge message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server
smtp.paradise.net.nz failed. The server maay be unavailable or is
refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting
is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator."

Two other T*bird profiles connect seamlessly and I cannot find an error
in Edit->Account Settings->Outgoing Server (SMTP). I have varied port
and secure connection settings without any change.

The server is otherwise OK, despite occasional congestion (on paradise
cable).

I'd be grateful for any constructive ideas. I'm off to sleep.

[SLUG] Gnome Squid proxy setup

2005-09-06 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi,

I've got proxies from http://www.squid-cache.org/ working with Firefox
& T*bird, but entering the same values in Gnome Desktop->Preferences->Network
Proxy either as manual or automatic does not work.

For example 'qmail.acnova.com' & 'qmail.unet.net.ph' work with the
Firefox & T*bird SwitchProxy extension, but do not work when entered in the
Gnome Proxy config setup manually or in automatic mode as
'www1.nz.squid-cache.org',
or in advanced config mode as 'www*.*.squid-cache.org'.

What am I missing here ?

[SLUG] Blam/Straw/Alexandria crashing .. misconfig ?

2005-07-15 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I recently find my [ PIII 0.5Gb RAM Debian unstable ] machine
freezing and running slowly, and
rss aggregators 'Blam' and 'Straw' not downloading initial feeds (while
Yarssr, Liferea, and Firefox-sage work well) and Alexandria
crashes if I try to change libraries. While true in /home/adam all these
apps work in other user accounts.

Having recently discovered rss I might be reaching cache limits -
expanding cache is one option but does not answer the question posed above.

I can't help thinking there is something badly configured in /home/adam
.. any suggestions would be welcome. Gconf ?

[SLUG] gnome-panel gone in Debian-unstable/Metacity

2005-06-09 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I logged into a seldom-used account to satisfy an 80 yr. old
lady's wish to send an urgent
email and found two panels giving me a choice between 'X-settings' and
'Gnome-session',
choosing the latter out of long-term habit. I then found gnome-panels
to be completely gone.

I've been trying to reverse-engineer my way out of this be repeating
these steps but that
choice is not re-appearing.

Trying 'apt-get -f install gnome-panel' as root gives me a long string
of unmet dependencies
which won't cut'n paste from gnome-terminal.

Is this something affecting other Debian unstable users at the moment,
or just me ?

Thanks. I've had a look at '/usr/sbin/syslog-facility' .. the only
modifiable part is the line

I've unsuccessfully looked for a default version via Google, man page,
and text ["Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 Unleashed" (SAMS, 1999)] but without
something to
compare it with, I can't see the error.

Also, on checking the output line

I find that /var/log/ndtpd.log is empty.

I think I'm missing something here.

Sorry for the delayed reply,

You were right about syslog. Two lines had been deleted in the 'action' part
of the default syslog.conf file. Problem solved.

But ndtpd still won't install, output below.

I daresay that syslogd is badly miconfigured on your machine. With the
syslog messages going to console as wall messages, and the fact that
the command that failed is "syslog-facility set info

[SLUG] Fixing postgresql postmaster

2005-05-21 Thread Adam Bogacki
Well it was brutal, but it worked.

I deleted the data files, apt-removed postgresql, used 'find' to find
and delete anything else postgresql,
and apt-(re)installed .. to find I had a working postgresql.

Thanks Daniel.

[SLUG] postgresql-dump catch-22 ?

2005-05-21 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hmm .. I seem to have reached a catch-22.

I had 7.2 installed, apt-upgraded to 7.8.4
I tried to apt-remove and then reinstall postgres, which may have just
removed parts of 7.2
When I try to run 'postgresql-dump', it fails telling me it cannot start
the postmaster.

But when I try to start the postmaster

[SLUG] postgresql-dump probs ..

2005-05-20 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I'm having a problem getting Postgresql working properly.
There seem to be two problems. The postmaster is not working and
the database is in an older format that cannot be read by
version 7.4 of PostgreSQL.I have read the 'README.Debian.migration'
file but am still confused. I tried apt-removing the older version
and apt-reinstalling with no difference.

When running 'postgresql-dump' I get the following

>> Tux:/root$ psql postgresql-dump -- d
>> psql: could not connect to server: [EMAIL PROTECTED]&@
>> Is the server running locally and accepting
>> connections on Unix domain socket
>> "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
>> Tux:/root$
>
>

Also,

>> Tux:/etc/postgresql# /etc/init.d/postgresql start
>> Starting PostgreSQL database server: postmaster(FAILED)
>> ERROR: The database is in an older format that cannot be read by
>> version 7.4 of PostgreSQL.

When I try to get into postgres I get asked for a password, but as I
have not yet set up or configured it, there isn't one.

>> Tux:/root$ su postgres
>> Password:

I'm aware this is a fairly common procedure but I'm floundering
around, the night is late, I'm trying to RTFM, and other priorities call.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

[SLUG] ltsp: Cannot open devices '/dev/psaux' '/dev/mouse'

2004-12-04 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, logging in as a user on the server I was given the choice an X or
Gnome setup. I chose X and the mouse started to work intermittently and
then died. Worse, when I rebooted into into the XP partition it was also
stuck firmly in the center of the screen.

Error messages include '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device
/dev/psaux, No such device' and '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: cannot open
device /dev/mouse, No such file or directory'. The /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
looks OK, but I'm not sure if I should be looking for a
/tmp/XF86Config-4 file. My current /tmp does not contain one. Looking at
the filesystem, /dev/psaux exists, but /dev/mouse does not. Output from
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 includes "(EE) PreInit failed for input device
'Generic Mouse' (II) Unload Module: 'mouse' (WW) No core pointer
registered. No core pointer." I am writing this on the client machine.
Any ideas ?
This IntelliMouse has been good to me for a long time.

[SLUG] /etc/dhcpd.conf

2004-11-09 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi, I'm trying to configure /etc/dhcpd in order to set up a two machine

The P1 client boots with etherboot but I can't start dhcpd.
Below is my my most recent config attempt, together with the current
error message when I try to start dhcpd.
My DNS is 203.79.110.81 and the server IP used in successful Win config
is 192.168.0.1

Any constructive ideas ?

Thanks, when I try that I get the message

and when I try the network calculator it gives a netmask of

My /etc/dhcp.conf currently looks like that below; everything else

When I write a subnet declaration for 192.168.0.0 and for 192.168.0.1

presumably the "network segment to which interface start is attached") I
get the
message that the two conflict.
