The problem that we've been having so far is putting 2.5

For the record, getting 2.5 HP continuous is no problem with the

I saw the versions that Tom has and they are improved.  The
stand has less metal which makes it a lot lighter in the
Sportube  and probably draws less attention in the Xray

It sounds like the guy who makes them, life is changing and he is

Gordy, et al.

The one you got was made by Fred Guilfoyle, after in 1999, I
asked him to make some for us (see how small the world is?). Fred
made a bunch, and when his job situation changed, stopped making
them. Then, Paul Kmetko asked permission to develop them and have
them produced, which we accepted happily. Paul has vastly improved on
our original "just-for-your-buddy design," and they are
better than ever and will continue to be available, no worries... For

Unless there is flutter or severe turbulence, flying loads will
prevent the panels from separating on a well-built and well-fitting

Re: [RCSE] Micro Slopers?

2003-01-14 Thread Dieter @ ShredAir

Don't worry about the HS-50 actuating two ailerons, especially if
they're on torque tubes, which mostly cancel out loads. If you want
something all done, consider a VIP pylon racer; it's molded to fit
the HS-50. I fly mine on the slope with all the electric "junk"
installed and a folding prop. They're fun!

Dieter Mahlein
http://shredair.com

I have two HS-50 servos I can't use for anything right now, and want
to build something SMALL to use them. I fly slope mostly so a HLG
isn't really my cup of tea right now. I was thinking something of a
micro sloper with a 30" or less wingspan, standard tail (elevator)
and one aileron only (so as to not overload the hs-50). Does anyone
have any input on something like this? Have any of y'all done it? I
know the easy answer is a small flying wing, but I want something
more 'classic' (for lack of a better word)

I looked up a couple online and wasn't too impressed with the
available offerings.

I have had no response to this question so I am trying this again.

I have a question about the modules in the vision. My Vision has a module
with identifying numbers as follows:

93782 72MPCM

FCC ID AXY9MHATXO15

I know this is good for my Vision.

I came across another Module and although the pins are the same there are a
couple of differences.

First the labels are upside down in relation to pin location compared to the
first module.

Second, although the part number is identical (93782), the FCC ID is
different. It is FCC ID AXY ATXO26.

THIRD DIFFENENCE. THE FIRST HAS GREY CASE AND SECOND HAS BLACK CASE.

Is this module compatible with the vision? Is there a reason for the
different numbers and color?

Thanks for any help

The ones I've seen in models are a gimmick, mostly. The problem, it

True. Im no aero dynamicist either, and certainly downward deflection
of airflow at partially-deployed flaps reduces effective breaking. --
The main issue for me is that flap deflection between 75 and 90
degrees adds only 4 percent more frontal area. To me the extra strain
required on servo, linkage, and hinge is not worth the last 15
degrees of deflection.

Hello Dave et al.,

I've always assumed this airfoil was by Norbert Habe (and it still
may be), but it's not on his site at http://www.habebert.de. --
Well, it's a TLAR airfoil for a floater, and as Paul Naton
demonstrated before the San Diego Mid-Winter Electrics, the plane
could "stay up all day." He had to land because the tx battery was
low.

As Al posted, it also did quite well in the windy, squally conditions
I flew it in in San Diego. I could have stayed up for hours slope'n
the tree line behind the vendor tents, had that not required to
continuously break all sorts of a safety rules.

By the way, our website lists an incorrect price (I'll have Marcela
fix that tonight); the Cumulus costs $495. We have 2 in stock and 3
coming.

Ed, I do beg to differ. That's NOT the way it is. As an importer, it
takes no more than a phone call to the manufacturer to get at least a
CG range. I write basic manuals for all our planes, and the
recommendations in there -- while conservative, as Daryl pointed out
-- will get the plane safely in the air and let every pilot "adjust
to taste" on their own.

I am happy to not be perpetuating the myth that high-performance
planes are only for experts who know everything already. Given just a
little guidance in the beginning, many intermediate pilots will find
out how easy and enjoyable it is to fly a good plane, and it will
sharpen their skills quicker than a not so good one.

Nonono, you got it all wrong... :o) All you need is a single long
berm kinda like a dam, with round sissy LZs on either end. Mount the
thing on a big turn table, and have a small wind vane feed a
computerized motor which automatically turns the berm perpendicular
to the wind.

Now you can BS (ballistic slope'n) and DS to your heart's content.

Improve upon that by placing a long row of major wind machines just
far enough away that they don't interfere with turn-table operation.
If it ain't blowing, just align the berm with the wind machines,
flick a switch, and hold on to your hat.

But the best improvement is to build a circular rail road around the
turn table with all the wind machines mounted on a train. This way,
you can always position the wind machines in line with the prevailing
wind and augment the natural breeze when needed.

Let me know when you're done... :o)

Happy Holidays!

[RCSE] Wind and molded myths

2001-12-11 Thread Dieter @ ShredAir

I wish to take issue with statements that a pilot with 18-months of
flying experience cannot handle a good molded sailplane. I can only
speak for our line of planes, but they fly more precisely and
consistently and predictably and with overall much better performance
than the crates usually recommended to beginners. How can consistent
and better handling be bad or difficult?

Would you tell a 1-year skier, s/he has to stick yet another season
with bent-up fence boards taped to the boots instead of a decent set
of skis and bindings? No? Why then should a pilot with a season and a
half under his belt continually be frustrated with questionable gear?

When set up to the instructions we provide, an intermediate pilot
will enjoy flying our molded planes. Of course we will work with the
pilot and suggest an appropriate set-up and flying style at first,
and we always recommend flying with more experienced company.

In past events, I have used every opportunity to hand my demo planes

This is our first sale since ShredAir started 2 years ago. Sale items
include F3F and F3J gliders, hotliners and F5F gliders, some EDF
(electric ducted fan) planes, a few Plettenberg/Schulze systems for
EDF and helicopters, and a 1/3 scale Lo-100.

Also, due to the consistently high US Dollar exchange rate, we have
adjusted prices on many of our products. Thanks for the bandwidth.

[RCSE] The annual Eagle Butte pilgrimage

2001-06-02 Thread Dieter @ ShredAir

This year, we're attending the S&E Modeler scale fun fly at Eagle
Butte on June 9 and 10, and we're staying to fly at the various
slopes for a few days thereafter. For those attending the event, the
following ShredAir slope and F3B planes will be on hand to inspect
and to test fly before and after the scale event on each day:
Brisk-II, Scar, Space, Stratos SR, and some electrics, if necessary.
Some demo planes may be for sale, but we do not intend to bring NIB
planes unless pre-arranged (please e-mail privately).

Eagle Butte is a world-class slope site which can produce incredible
lift. The site is privately owned and must be treated as such.
Dynamic Soaring is not possible at Eagle Butte, but on nearby Kiona
Butte, which is public land administered by the Bureau of Land
Management (BLM).

Eagle and Kiona have easy landing approaches and good LZs, which
makes them different from Chandler Butte, another BLM site nearby.
Chandler is an awe-inspiring, west and north-west facing bowl.
Landing there is not difficult for seasoned slope pilots but can be a
bit intimidating for novices and those used to having large LZ's and
flying "normal" landing patterns.

If you have any time at all, come and enjoy the hospitality of the
Mid-Columbia Soarers, the local club. June is typically an excellent
month for catching the good south-west slope lift at Eagle Butte.

Best,

Martin,

Assuming the spar is OK, slice open the leading edge where the top
and bottom halves are joined (this is usually pretty easy to do).
Being near the root, you will be able to make yourself an airfoil
template for a foam insert into the D-tube. Size the insert big
enough to stiffen up the affected area.

You may have to slice open the LE quite a bit in order to insert the
foam; don't worry it, if it was easy to slice open, it'll be easy to
glue back together with epoxy; hold closed with masking tape.

Test-fit the foam insert by holding the LE closed and checking for
fit. Once it fits well, mix epoxy with some filler like Cabasil to
make it just a little less runny. Pry open the LE and apply the epoxy
between the foam and the wing skins; apply some to the LE where it is
split open, and squeeze it together once to wipe off excess epoxy.
Then, tape the whole shebang shut length-wise with 2"-wide masking
tape: stick the tape to the bottom or the top of the wing, and
carefully fold it around while squeezing the LE together firmly.

[RCSE] Soar Utah 2000 picture pages

2001-03-28 Thread Dieter @ ShredAir

Hello everyone,

As part of our new Event Album pages, Marcela has uploaded a few
pictures of Soar Utah 2000: http://shredair.com/album.html

No need for us to remind everyone who didn't make it what an
outstanding event they missed, Paul Naton's video rubs that in
adequately...

While you're at our site, look at some grainy flying pictures of the
new Stratos SR-Slope Racer (http://shredair.com/stratosr.html).
Grainy because winter slope'n on the Oregon Coast does not usually
come with a lot of sunshine...

Marcela will soon upload pictures of the Southwest Soaring Challenge
in Phoenix, an excellent contest put on by the Central Arizona
Soaring League every February. These picture will show lots of
sunshine and ShredAir hats, pilots posing with planes, planes being
launched, and planes being "landed." Everything else in between is
tedious dawdling (TD)... spoken like a true Homo slopeiens, I better
go now... :o)

>Everybody interested in theory of speed- and energy management of

In a nutshell, this page shows and summarizes the results of
theoretical calculations designed to optimize the DS flight path. In
the graphs, the green portions have a positive energy budget, while
energy is lost in the red portions; the yellow horizontal arrows are
wind vectors.

The study reports that satellite observations have shown albatross
flying up to 1000 kilometers by DSing the wind gradient between
roughly 0 and 20 meters above the water surface.

The pictures of the glider show a DS path on the UPwind side of a
mountain range but downwind of a smaller ridge. The text does not
address the significance of the large range is or why it is included
in the images. It does say that the special head-up display is
designed to help the pilot attain the optimum flight path, and that
simulated and real-world experiments are being conducted to determine
the feasiblity of such aflight path.

Bill et al.,

It's very possible that John Higgins is not taking orders at this
time. -- Higgins planes are designed for high wind situations and/or
miniscule to non-existing LZs where even we hard-core slope-heads
don't want to risk any other plane. They don't fly very well in light
and even medium lift situations. As you're drooling over the scenes
in Lift Ticket, keep in mind that they were taken when the lift was
really pumping.

There are some alternatives to Higgins planes which fly well also in
medium lift. Check out Brian Laird's excellent line of fast, compact
slopers: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/slope_scale/

And there is the Zipper by the Birdworks:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/slope_scale/. The Zipper is
also an excellent DS plane.

And speaking of DS, Pat Bowman is now shipping his JW, an EPP wing
designed specifically for DS; last time I looked over my shoulder,
the line for one was shortening... :o)
http://www.bowmanshobbies.com/aircraft.html
The JW really showed its stuff at Cape Blanco at Halloween.

Finally one of the best, fun 60" slopers that will work well
unballasted even in light lift, is Joe Cormier's Mach-1. Joe doesn't
have a website, but you can e-mail him at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That one's an ARF, about as well done as you can get bagged wings and
stab and molded fuse, and it costs $300+, and that is a fair price,
people!

There are probably a few more sources I'm missing here.

If you do want to see some Higgins planes, some of us hard-core
nutcases will be camping and flying there over New Years.

Best for Y2.001K to all,

Dieter
