Re: [Soekris] They finally suspended operations
Not complaining at all. It is just amazing how cheap the APUs are, that they don't cost much more then their racking kits and sometimes even less! I have replaced my failing 6501 with PC Engine APU2. Very happy. Funny how the rack mounting kits cost a lot, relative to the price of the APU its self. Re: [Soekris] I see development of the net6801 has been dropped.
I think it would be interesting to see some diversification from the "server-as-a-router" market's current offerings, which are mostly just generic computers with multiple network interfaces and rackmount cases. Soekris is in an interesting position to be able to build application specific hardware, since the board is mostly custom. I think it would be cool if we had packet processing and switching done in hardware, and integrated into the OS' routing and bridging tables, so that packet switching and some routing decisions could be made in purpose specific hardware rather than on the general use CPU. I think the specs of the 6501 are sufficient for most network appliance applications, but what is missing is the ability to significantly scale up traffic. Doing that with a general purpose CPU seems expensive and would be taxing on the rest of the operating system. It seems a few companies have dabbled with creating PCIe ethernet switches that can switch packets on-card, but nothing that looks like it's meant to be controlled by or integrated well with the operating system. -Dan On Tue, Oct 20, 2015 at 1:44 PM Christopher Sean Hilton wrote: > On Tue, Oct 20, 2015 at 10:27:23PM +0200, Vadim Troshchinskiy wrote: > > That makes sense, but it's still a pity not to have a higher spec > > machine to move to, even if it's not that particular model. > > > > Though on the other hand it makes a fair amount of sense: I've been > > searching for alternatives and the latest Atom is about 3 years old! Re: [Soekris] I see development of the net6801 has been dropped.
Guess I picked up my used net6501-70 on e-bay just in time! Has anybody experimented with PCIe ethernet switching cards? I have been looking at the DualComm DCP-1004(L), which might be a nice way to do switching through my net6501 without using the onboard CPU for layer-2. I was having trouble finding examples of applications that others have used, so I'm wondering how stable they are. -Dan On Tue, Oct 6, 2015 at 10:09 AM Vadim Troshchinskiy wrote: > On Tuesday, October 06, 2015 04:38:51 PM Stephen Mintz wrote: > > I am crushed as well. [Soekris] Consistent PHYRdyChg error on second mSATA (BIOS / HW problem ?)
I have just received two net6501-70 with identical configurations: - net6501-70 Board and 1 Slot Standard Case - Intel 30GB MLC mSATA SSD - SSDMCEAC030B3 (2 per box - for software RAID 1) - lan1841, PCI Express Quad Gigabit ethernet board While installing Linux x32 (3.15.1), during the initial software raid setup the second mSATA (scsi 1:0:0:0) drops out of raid after a few minutes of raid building. The behavior is 100% reproducible on both boxes. Furthermore, after encountering the error and soft-rebooting, the BIOS no longer sees the second mSATA drive (it does NOT appear in comBIOS device listing)- a hardware reboot (i.e. from button) or power cycle makes the disk available again. The first mSATA (scsi 0:0:0:0) is stable. The distro is Linux Gentoo i686 and I can reproduce it with both the supplied kernel or custom compiled. I can provide .config and any and all other information, or try anything you might suggest in order to further debug the issue. Details below; please advise. Hi, I am using net6501-70 running with OpenBSD 5.0 32bit using the Transcend MLC SSD option. The only issues I have found were lm-sensors showing only temperature (and the wrong one - 95c) and watchdog not working at all. There have been some reports on this list about rebooting problems using the Transcend SSDs. I seldom boot and never had any issues. In few days I plan to upgrade to 5.1, and I'll report here, though following the change log I don't think there will be any difference. However, in -current change log there are some ATOM related fixes. Is there some channel coding going on over that > non-modem serial link that would give you more bits per symbol? You're probably confused with the second sentence which I didn't intend to relate specifically to the first in this specific case. No assignment of encoding or symbol set was given for what we're discussing over the circuit. What we're discussing is therefore only the bit rate. The symbol rate is related to, but should never be confused with, the gross bitrate. It's only correct that the baud rate is the bit rate if the bit rate /is/ actually the baud rate. (That may sounds tautological, but it's not.) While true in this circumstance because it its the interace speed between the DCE and DTE it may not be in all cases which is why the correct terminology to use here is bps here since it's what the DTE cares about and what the DCE is sending, no further baudot is at play between the DTE/DCE pair, only possibly between DCEs that may, or may not (even in this case) be in between. When discussing baudot rates each signal symbol can represent or convey one or several bits of data. And even with ASCII there are still seldom used shift codes and escape codes which can effect bit to signal rating. So in any event the correct unit for expression here in this case is bps, and not baud. They do relate, but should not be confused, and since the baud and bps rates can be quite different bps is what should be stated. But yes, in this case it's very most likely still one channel on the null modem serial circuit. In this case they are in all likelihood the same but the correct rating for expression would still be bps. Often though you commonly can end up with fewer symbols per second in such circuits, while in modem circuits you often see more bits per signal event. Data may be represented by the transitions between symbols or even by a sequence of many symbols. Simple examples in differences: all "zero" symbols aren't marking; a symbol may have more than two states so it may represent more than one bit. Sorry it's a pet peeve of mine since the days of explaining the difference between the bps an baud rates as seen between different teletype models since different models used different baudot codes. -d Dan Shoop Computer Scientist U.S. Technical Services dan.sh...@usts.com GoogleVoice ... 1-646-402-5293 * Nextel 1-714-363-1174 Operations TOC (24/7) . 1-866-901-USTS USTS Offices .. 1-714-374-6300 For immediate response or urgent matters please speak to the Duty Officer at the USTS Tactical Operations Center (above) ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

What, if anything, did you do to configure the install process to use the serial console for the installer at 19200 bps? Did you read the soekris wiki about installing debian? Normally PC style installers don't know to use the serial console, preferring the screen console, and need to be instructed to do so and at what speed. You may wish to try configuring the 4521 to 9600 bps and seeing if that works better, but you really should configure the serial console in the installer before running it. What does /var/lib/tftpboot/debian-installer/i386/boot-screens/txt.cfg and /var/lib/tftpboot/debian-installer/i386/boot-screens/syslinux.cfg look like? And, just to pick nits, it's 19200bps, not 19200 baud. The baud rate is how fast you're signaling, not the gross bit rate. You're probably still signaling at 9600 baud yet transmitting data at 19200bps. ;) -d ---- Dan Shoop Computer Scientist U.S. Technical Services dan.sh...@usts.com GoogleVoice ... 1-646-402-5293 * Nextel 1-714-363-1174 Operations TOC (24/7) . 1-866-901-USTS USTS Offices .. 1-714-374-6300 For immediate response or urgent matters please speak to the Duty Officer at the USTS Tactical Operations Center (above) ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
Re: [Soekris] Power to the net5501
Actually JP10 is illustrated further down the page :) You can power the board via pin 3 of JP10 . Don't use JP5 though - its regulated power for running drives. Re: [Soekris] problems with new SanDisk Ultra II cards
Paul, Thanks for this info, that's very helpful. I have 8GB cards from batches 903B and 902B (both 8GB) which are doing this. I'll post up any others I find (we have quiet a few) as this info might be of use to others. I can map around the sda/sdb issue as you suggest, but I need to make consider the risk of putting differently configured units in the field. If you have the same behavior I do, be careful: I found that when the sata is disconnected the flash appears as (hd0)/sda regardless of BIOS settings. This means if the sata drive fails, and you've got references to (hd1)/sdb in your grub/fstab it isn't going to boot. To work around this I've had to use volume labels in fstab, and a fallback option in grub to boot off (hd0) if (hd1) fails. (I also had no luck using boot=LABEL=root kernel args, this may be specific to my kernel however). Do you have any idea if this is specific to the net5501 BIOS (the initial info I found on your website seemed to imply this), or have you seen it in other hardware with these cards? Re: [Soekris] problems with new SanDisk Ultra II cards
Hi, Thanks for your quick reply! I have tried to upgrade the BIOS, but I don't think my KeySpan is playing nicely. I'll try on a computer with a proper serial port tomorrow, but I've not seen anything to explicitly suggest 1.33c fixes this issue - have you seen this problem yourself? I should add that if there is no sata drive attached, and flash=secondary is set linux/grub etc all see the CF card as the primary master, which seems odd. [Soekris] problems with new SanDisk Ultra II cards
I've been having some problems with a net5501 (BIOS 1.33) and a new CF (8GB SanDisk Ultra II), it seems to be related to something described on the list in November: http://lists.soekris.com/pipermail/soekris-tech/2009-November/016162.html With the newer card, when flash=primary is set the sata drive is never detected. When I use an older SanDisk card its detected every time. I've also tried a couple of different sata drives and that doesn't seem to make a difference. I can set flash=secondary, and the sata drive works fine as the primary - however I can't deploy this in our setup. My initial thought, given SanDisks good reputation was that these must be counterfeit cards. However I know the cards are genuine as we obtained them from a SanDisk distributor. Its a bit of a pain as we've already bought a large quantity of cards on the basis that SanDisk are recommended by Soekris. Is there a possibility of a BIOS or other work around? I don't really want to have to replace all these CF cards! Dan ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
