RE: AMD MAXON Cinema 4D.
Normally it comes to to a bit of both. Ideally openGL should have been the del facto standard, but however due to squabbling and poor implementations of the standard (Microsoft wanting to punt directX and Apple with not supporting all the required calls) have lead to it use been minimal compared to what it should have been. Hopefully the community at large can now see the benefits of having standards that works both cross application and cross operating systems. Hopefully OpenEXR2 and OpenVDB will lead the way on this. Maybe openGL will make a comeback ;) NVIDIA have been very aggressive in getting their CUDA tech working in a wide range of places. ATI was very low key and has suffered because of it ( I am assuming because of the change of owners a few times tends to muddy the road map) Unfortunately because of its market dominance NVIDIA now has a very compelling reason to try and squash openCL where it can ;( From: Jason S [jasonsta...@gmail.com] Sent: 21 April 2013 08:00 PM To: softimage@listproc.autodesk.com Subject: Re: AMD MAXON Cinema 4D. (being quite a biggie) But what puzzles me is why developpers predominantly choose Cuda as opposed to OpenCL since OpenCL works on both platforms? Is it technical reasons? or it's a Marketing thing? (Cuda sounding cooler?) But for me, questionable ATI driver quality mostly has to do with the interface, or general presentation. (not that I often go fiddle with driver settings but..) Personally, I can´t say much about ATI cards but the one that came with my MacPro2008. It wasn´t fast but Maya worked on it without glitches. Generally, the AMD/ATI windows drivers are said to have be frustrating in the past. I would hope that the OpenGL and general driver quality for AMD graphics cards gets a better reputation by putting in more quality control. I would think that there is a good chance this will happen as at least one next generation console is going to use AMD chips and the tests including the technical specifications and burn-in of such a plattform may benefit any related products, if only for a rigorous testing pipeline in place already... Using it just felt like the person or people who created it just didn’t care how well it worked. If AMD (ATI) cards work for you, great, but it’s going to take some pretty massive changes for me to seriously consider using them again. I think with programs like C4d and Modo, the developers go out of their way to write their programs to work with them. I remember Modo 1.0 worked well with ATI (from what I heard on the forums), but it had a lot of problems with NVidia cards. Re: Ultra sound or MRI scan formats to common 3D formats?
Have a look at DeVIDE http://graphics.tudelft.nl/Projects/DeVIDE It uses, among other libraries, VTK for visualisation and processing. I managed to convert custom-made slices into MRI type formats using this. From memory, you can make processing graphs with a node editor, and I'm pretty sure you could use these graphs to then process stuff from the commandline, but I could be wrong. Good luck! Most of the PPG widget types need a PPG.Refresh() when changed, e.g. all the enum types (list widget etc), and most likely also the bitmap type. What's strange is that the selection in the listbox changes/disappears when refreshing the PPG. If that widget is related to an actual parameter that holds a value on the PPG it should be properly reselected I think. Hey Everyone, I'm working on a Model/Asset Management system for our Company. Did I over-complicate this?
I wanted to ask for your collective wisdom on this. I have a project where I'm animating around 30 different cables. Some are USB, some Firewire, and so on. Initially for the storyboards I use PowerExtrude to lay out all the designs, but now I need to fly the cables down my curves. If I didn't need the connectors, I could just animate PowerExtrude and be done with it, but all the various connectors need to be there as they extrude. My thought was, constrain a null to the curve, animate the null down the curve and use that to drive PowerExtrude. I then parent the connector to the null. I can't just build the cables beforehand and then deform them with a curve (AFAIK) because they need to appear to be growing from the client's product and the connectors can't be deformed by the curve in any way - just the cables can bend. So does my method seem ok, or is that overly complicated for what I'm doing? Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. -Paul
RE: Did I over-complicate this?
Create a cylinder surface with the base at zero and the height at 1. You'll want to freeze transforms to get this right. Deform the cylinder to curve uising AnimateDeformDeform By Curve. Create a cluster at the end of the deformed cylinder Constrain the connector to the cluster using Object to Cluster and use the normal constraing in Obj2Cls to align the connector to the end of the cable. You can use the curve deform scale to extrude along the curve, but for best results the source mesh or surface needs to be one unit in length in Y. Therefore scaling the curve deform to two will make it two units long along the curve, etc. -- Joey Ponthieux LaRC Information Technology Enhanced Services (LITES) Mymic Technical Services NASA Langley Research Center __ Opinions stated here-in are strictly those of the author and do not represent the opinions of NASA or any other party.

I thought about constrained clusters, but for some reason thought they didn't work with deform by curve. That's basically where my hair-brained scheme came from. Thanks! Product Activation Wizard issues
Hey everyone. I thought I would ask here first before digging further, Many of my students have complained about this issue with the Product activation wizard, with Softimage and with Maya. they simply can't get an activation beyond the 30 day trial. The link i have found is here. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?linkID=9240617id=6404339siteID=123112 There appear to be about 7 ways to fix this issue. I had the issue myself with a MotionBuilder 2013. Has anyone else come across this, and without having to dig into each and every fix or hack my registry, was there a quick fix? Do the latest version of Autodesk have this same issue? Any help or thoughts on this would be most welcome. Thanks Adam
RE: Wots changed w/ cmd and/or bat rendering..
Our licenses expired last November and we had to get replacements. Upon doing so some of our batch scripts no longer functioned. Apparently something has changed with licensing. We had to revise all our scripts by appending -processing as an argument to xsibatch.exe before anything would work again. Try that. Yes, I have it working as before with a call to setenv.bat (thanks to Dan Yarguci), on all my other computers and a few remote servers, it is just my main do it here computer w/ various vanilla installs of 2011, 2012, 2013 that fails. I have checked all the setenv.bats and related w/ User Tools and also checked my paths and env vars.., nothing yet however. I also re-registered jscript.dll and vbscript.dll, ran runonce.bat, and all the Stupid User Tricks I know from way back to Softimage 2 or 3.. My last hope will be to un-install the XSI's, and the Python, and etc, start fresh and see when it fails. stl export and plugin to see size of object
Is there any FREE plugin to export to stl format? And is there any plugin to see the size of objects in softimage. By that i mean the width, height and depth of an object. I know the story of softimage units is whatever unit you want it to be, but this isn't really helping if you can't see it. And counting the grid is kinda time consuming. hope service pack 1 will bring this :)
Re: stl export and plugin to see size of object
here is a plugin I wrote that you can use. It's all in python so there should not be any problems with it. You'll find it under File-Export-Export STL. Exporting through the menu allows only for binary STLs but the command itself has a switch to export in ascii format too. hope this helps cheers vladimir On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 4:46 PM, Doeke Wartena clankil...@gmail.com wrote: Is there any FREE plugin to export to stl format? Re: stl export and plugin to see size of object
Just download MeshLab, (it's free and opensource) http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ It can import OBJs. Here's a tutorial about using MeshLab to figure out and adjust scaling for a 3D print: http://www.shapeways.com/tutorials/how_to_use_meshlab_and_netfabb When you figure out how much a 1x1x1 Softimage cube is in real units according to MeshLab, let us know! :) On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 4:46 PM, Doeke Wartena clankil...@gmail.com wrote: Is there any FREE plugin to export to stl format? This simple script will also work for finding width, height and depth, of the bounding box of course: ret = Application.GetBBox(Application.Selection(0)) print 'Width: %s' % (ret('UpperBoundX') - ret('LowerBoundX')) print 'Height: %s' % (ret('UpperBoundY') - ret('LowerBoundY')) print 'Depth: %s' % (ret('UpperBoundZ') - ret('LowerBoundZ')) ALOK GANDHI / chef directeur technique - lead technical director alok.gan...@modusfx.com mailto:alok.gan...@modusfx.com T: *450 430-0010 x225 F: *450 430-0009 www.modusfx.com http://www.modusfx.com - MODUS FX 120 Rue Turgeon, Sainte-Therese (Quebec) CANADA J7E 3J1 Follow us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ModusFX Twitter https://twitter.com/Modusfx ** On 22/04/2013 4:46 PM, Doeke Wartena wrote: Is there any FREE plugin to export to stl format? Controlling Strand length using flow along curve?
I am emitting particles which flow along curves, and I need a strand to trail after the particle, so I use Align Strand to Particle trajectory. My problem is that at the start of the curve, the strand, which is rather long, points straight down until the particle has traveled the length of the curve which corresponds to the trail length, after which the strand follows the curve nicely. I have tried animating the length of the strand so it grows from zero length, which is what I would prefer, but this leaves me with a very short strand trail for the whole animation. How can I fix the strand so it doesn't point straight down in the beginning, and is there a way to make the strand animate longer as the particle moves along the curve it flows along? Thanks! Thanks David David - to use the size output, plug the size array into the array port of a 'select in array' node. Get 'self.id' and plug that into the index port of the 'select in array' node. Set 'self.size' using the output of the select in array node.
