Re: [Spits] Replacement transmissin synchro problems -

2010-04-27 Thread Jim Holmgren
I can second that. My rebuilt OD transmission (rebuilt by a well-know shop)
has the 'new' synchros. 2nd to 3rd cannot be done quickly without some
major grindage.

When I rebuilt my old 4-speed about 3 years ago, we had a pile of both new
and NOS synchros on the bench and you could actually tell by manually
twisting them with the respective gear which ones were new and which were
NOS, even though they looked identical to the naked eye. The NOS synchros
would grab very nicely, the new ones would slip.

Unfortunately I have not heard anything recently about the situation
improving.

 NOS ones.

Re: [Spits] High-torque starter fitting

2009-04-28 Thread Jim Holmgren
Hi Matt,
What kind of starter did you get? I just put one on my '75 a couple of weeks
ago, I had no problem with it.

I got the one that Ted Schumacher sells, it swivels a full 360* in about 20*
increments so you can adjust the angle on it.

Slightly blurry picture of it in-situ here on my website:
http://www.littlebluespitfire.com/gallery/starter/P1010022

You can see that the solenoid is below the steering arm, just above the
frame.

Picture of the indexing holes:
http://www.littlebluespitfire.com/gallery/starter/P1010020

On Ted's starter, you have to remove two 'set screws' from the holes, when you
do that, the entire mount plate swivels freely. It was really easy to set in
place, swivel it around to the proper angle, then pull it out and install the
set screws to maintain that angle.

If you get Spitfire GT6 Magazine, I have an article on the installation in
the upcoming issue.

Hope this helps!

Re: [Spits] trunk light

2009-04-27 Thread Jim Holmgren
There was definitely a trunk light available - you can still get them from
some of the parts vendors I believe. I have the wiring for mine still,
although the light is long-gone. It is wrapped in the same line as the
sending unit wiring. The light mounted in the panel that covers the gas
tank.

I always suspected (guess I could go check the wiring with a meter) that the
light was on anytime the headlights are on (?) - I've never seen a switch or a
built-in spot to mount one.

Re: [Spits] GT6 Radiator Caps

2008-12-26 Thread Jim Holmgren
One of those fancy non-contact laser thermometers works great for checking
this. I thought my Spit was running WAY hot this summer until a friend used
his laser thermometer and showed me that it was running perfectly in the temp
range. Talk about a sense of relief! It turns out my voltage regulator was
done in and had my temp gauge reading way off.

You can pick up a cheap one at Horrible Freight for about $40. Nice to be
able to see the temp at the top and bottom of the radiator, at the thermostat
housing, at the header, etc. at a glance. Plus...it's a lot of fun to play
with. :)

Actually - they are on sale right now for $29.99

Re: [Spits] Spitfire Header

2007-08-18 Thread Jim Holmgren
I bought the European spec Tri-Y exhaust header from John Esposito at Quantum
Mechanics. It was OEM to the European Spits and works/fits very nicely, plus
it is cast iron and I'm told not nearly as prone to cracking as the stock US
exhaust manifold. Warning: This will NOT work with the single Stromberg
carb setup without significant modification to the water jacket - ask me how I
know. :)

I will fit the 1500 and the 8-port 1300's. For $150 + shipping, IMO can't be
beat, especially if you are running dual carbs!

Otherwise, I'd go with Ted - I bought my twin-HS4 carbs from him (among other
things). :)

It will come out without removing the pressure sender - it just takes some

so in the process of looking for a/c parts and other parts I thought the
prospective gt6 would need, I found another, nicer one for sale. looks
like I'll be buying that one.

that one, though, has a few rust holes that I remember my spitfire
having, and I got some replacement sheet metal from victoria british. I
remember being very disappointed with the quality of the panel, and I
ended up scouring the town for a body guy to fab the small panel I
needed rather than try to get the victoria british part to work. I
later ended up being kinda unhappy with a lot of what they sent me. not
all of it, but I remember thinking they weren't overly concerned with
what they were sending out.

has this changed any? this was about ten years ago.

the only other option at the time wasn't really an option--the guys
(whose name I can not now remember for the life of me) in pennsylvania.

you know 'em, big outfit, were building an inn/hotel last I paid
attention. had some bear teddy ruxpin mascot. did all things tr3-6,
and some late spitfire, but no early spitfire. I asked for four years,
and each time the early spit was right around the corner, but never
happened. I remember they said they had stuff, but never seemed around
to getting a list out. had to call each time and spent a lot of time on
hold.

anyhow, I suppose I'm asking to see who we get parts from nowadays.

Dan,
You can also order the molded sets directly from Newton Commercial in
the UK. http://newtoncomm.co.uk/index.html

I ordered mine via their website on a Wednesday night, and received them

Cost with duties/shipping/etc was still about $50 less than the US
suppliers I could find - although many (I know Spitbits and VB sales are
on now, TRF soon to follow) are having their winter sales right now, so
you might do better.

Good luck!

Door handle gaskets

2004-05-19 Thread Jim Holmgren
Quick and simple (hopefully) question for you all. I'm getting ready to
re-install my exterior door handles on my '75 Spitfire. I bought new
gaskets for the handles, since the old ones were basically gone - not
much left of them.

Should I use any kind of adhesive or other treatment on the gaskets
before I reinstall the handles, or just let the compression from
tightening the door handle hold them in place? The gaskets are a
cork-like material.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

RE: Spitfire Gear Box Oil

2004-04-11 Thread Jim Holmgren
So my synchros are grinding just a little bit, and I'm thinking before
finding someone to tear down and rebuild the transmission, perhaps I
should try just changing out the trans fluif. Boy would that make me a
happy camper!

So, looking at MTL's website, are you using MTL or MT-90?

Also - it sounds a whole lot easier to pop the shifter out than to
access the inaccessium filler plug by removing the tranny cover (and
carpets and vertical dash support and various inner trim bits).

Any gotchas or downside to filling from the top? Is there an
over-filling potential? (and would that necessarily be a bad thing?)

Thanks for the advice!

The filler plug is on the side of tranny, or you can pop the shifter out
and fill it from top, also we have been using a product called Redline
MTL in the spit.
Did some reading before and this stuff works great as it doesnt get as
thick as normal gear oil and is easier to shift and synchros dont grind
anymore when shifting. There have been discussions on the best fluid
before and I have been led to believe that some of the SAE 90 stuff will
destroy the brass stuff in the tranny.

RE: Spitfire Gear Box Oil

2004-04-11 Thread Jim Holmgren
Received this handy tip from Joe Curry (thanks Joe!), figured I should
share it with you all - I think this is the way I'm going to go:

One other thing I should mention: If you get yourself some clear
aquarium tubing (the big stuff about the size of your finger), you can
fit it into the filler and run it up and forward so that it sticks up
ahead of the firewall into the engine compartment. Using a small
funnel, you can watch the oil flow through the tubing until it starts to
accumulate in the tubing. At that point you can remove the tubing and
quickly install the plug without losing much of that expensive oil. Put
a clean drip pan below the opening to catch any of that dear stuff and
pour it back in the plastic bottle.

Are you suggesting removing the shifter lever and pouring the oil into
its socket? If you were to do this, the oil would immediately go all
over the ground!

You should be able to get to the filler plug from below.
It's awkward, and you will get your hand filthy, but it's definitely
doable.

1.) Does anyone have any experience with the Optima batteries? I have

Hi Ed,
In addition to my Spitfire, I own a hybrid vehicle (Honda Insight) and I
am semi-active on a few EV lists (more of a lurker, really).

Optima batteries are generally well regarded amongst the EV-ers. In
fact, one of the folks (whom I regard as an EV guru) has his electric
dragster sponsered by Optima - that's good enough endorsement for me. I
plan on using an Optima when I need to replace my Spitfire's (or
Insight's) battery.

I have a 79 spit with the stock ZS 150 carb. I would like to replace
the stock air filter housing with a KN filter KN housing. Does
anyone have a KN part #? I know the big 3 have a KN set up for this,
but their parts # does not cross reference with the KN #. I can get the
KN set up cheaper elsewhere if I can find the part #.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Bob,
You should be able to get the exact # from KN online:

Hope this helps!
