[Spooks] Spy Numbers Logging Datavase Re: Regenerating ? Schedules.
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list There's a database of loggings here: http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/ If loggings are entered into this database, using this easy to use form here, rather than just typed as a message to the list, they automatically get entered into the database: http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/numbers.html No human intervention is required. It's that easy! Loggings can then be searched here: http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/dbSearchEntry.php3 This can make it much easier to collate information, to put together schedules. And, all the loggings are publicly available for all to use. There's over 120,000 loggings in the database right now, in fact. The more people that contribute their loggings, the more there will be for everyone else to see and use. There are some tools to display logs from the past during the current hour and day of week, as well as the next hour, to see what stations might be on the air. Right now it uses all loggings, so you get some old entries. This can certainly be tightened up to display only loggings from the last year for example. Let me know what would be best. I'd also like to point out that the HFUnderground.com website has a forum for numbers stations (in addition to forums for other radio related topics) here: http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/board,7.0.html On Jul 22, 2014, at 9:41 AM, EI0DB wrote: Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Hi All, Real question is; is there enough information out on the web to regenerate the schedules without Enigma? I am pretty certain that the spooks GCHQ, Russians, Red Chinese and various BVD type outfits in Europe, not to mention the occupants of black glasstower at Fort George G Meade, in Maryland, can read their stuff faster than it is typed. Also check out iSpectrum (http://www.dogparksoftware.com/iSpectrum.html), which has some useful capabilities that the other two don't. The real problem I've run into (though admittedly I haven't put a lot of effort into checking in a while) is that there's no all-in-one solution for OS X - basically, you end up having to take the toolbox approach when what you really need is a Swiss Army Knife. One other suggestion: if you aren't already running Macports (http://www.macports.org) and aren't adverse to using the commandline, install it and check through the audio ports. Most of what's in there tends to be CLI-based, but it at least gives you options for pre-processing the audio before dragging it into whatever package you're using for visualisation. - J. The next-best option might be to run a known-good Windows binary on an Intel Mac (see «http://darwine.sourceforge.net/»), though I can't tell you if it'll support application calls to the audio port (I'm a PowerPC guy). The last resort would be to port source code from Linux to Mac OS X - «http://www.finkproject.org/» and «http://www.macports.org/» will give you a good head-start. That said, finding relevant and recent Linux radio-related source code is frustratingly difficult; compiling it would be doubly so. Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Hello Mike, I saw your mail :-) Hehe nice theory! Another one is that they decode CW with software and the result is fed directly to the decipher engine which accepts cut numbers. So now they're using a freeware BPSK decoder and dump the output to the same engine :-) From the WASP Network trial in Miami a few years back, it came out that the Cuban agents were using laptops with decryption software hidden on them. So it would certainly be a logical next step to move to PSK31 for data transmission, so the agent could just tune his radio at the correct time to automagically pick up and decode the message. -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

[Spooks] Looking for historical spy numbers loggings
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I'm looking for anyone who has records of spy numbers loggings from the past, to add to the spy numbers database, http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/ This includes even fairly old loggings even back to the 1960s and 1970s, as well as more recent logs that aren't already in the database. By having a central repository for spy numbers loggings, it makes it easier for people who are researching patterns and trends in transmissions to find the data that they need. I know many listeners keep their own logs in various formats, such as database and spreadsheet files, and even just plain text / word processing files. I can convert the logs from practically any format, as long as the data entry system is consistent. So you don't need to do a lot of work, just email your logging file(s) to me. Likewise, listeners who don't presently enter their current loggings into the database, due to the effort involved (I know it can be tedious if you have dozens of logs per day!) can also contact me by email, and can send me their loggings daily in whatever format they wish, as long as it is consistent, I can easily import the loggings into the database for all to share. -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

How very strange this station is! After some time checking the tape recording I have decided that the calls I heard were: Queen-Baker-London then Baker-India-Charlie. The signal was very poor and it did not come up on the other expected frequencies later. I have placed a mp3 clip on my spy number web page. Have a listen and see if you agree with my QBL and BIC? It was very difficult with the strong accent of the reader, I am least sure about the Baker in both cases. Oh loop bearing from my QTH was 90' but I don't feel that to be accurate! My QTH West Sussex UK. Good catch. I have been trying to hear E15 here (east coast USA) for many years now, and still haven't. The time/freq choices make propagation to NAm virtually impossible. I believe there has been one logging of E15 in extreme north eastern Canada, so I still keep my hopes up! -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

At this point I can't tell if the attack is real, but the paper looks good and this is a reputable research team. Dated as of February 15th. Paper yet to be published...mmm, I wonder why? I make the freq to be 5919.958 kHz. Solid S9+20 signal here in Maryland. Definately local propagation characteristics. Reminds me of E5 carriers from Warrenton, in fact. Hmm... Bears watching. I got 9519.975 with a receiver with GPS disciplined frequency standard. However, it was -127dBm, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Greetings from Northern Colorado... That reminds me, I have not calibrated the SDR14 against WWV lately... doing that yields a carrier freq of 5919.957. Hmm, not too far off from before. -69dBm here with a 48mb dipole aimed towards euroland (and presumably picking up off the back end aimed somewhat towards Virginia ;-) I need to look into getting a GPS freq ref to feed into the SDR14. I guess I will just leave the 545 tuned in, and listen to hear if any audio pops up. -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

I've been trying to hear one since the late 90s, so it was kind of a big deal for me. I recorded it in my audioblog: http://wwdnaudblog.blogspot.com/2005/02/attencion-attencion.html Good catch for CA! Take a look at http://www.spynumbers.com for some recent v2 (attencion station) logs, they're in the database. Re: [Spooks] Sam Signal Strength
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I am however old enough to have a young adult son who has truly impressive knowledge of an arcane subject (unfortunately not radio) and a good sense of humor. Looking at Mike and his friends, I still wonder about someone(s) with really good radio knowledge (somewhat arcane) and a good sense of humor. A stellar prank would be to do a broadcast that: 1) Jumps frequencies (to use computer control knowledge) 2) uses an artificial wave form that looks like a data burst (to throw folks off), 3) DSB (because it is unusual), 4) loop a cartoon character (because it's funny), 5) runs automatically from a remote location (to not get caught), and 6) appeals to a small but enthusiastic group of people (so you get noticed and stay anonymous at the same time). WWB frequencies might have been taking it too far (that's interfering and might get the person caught by the FCC), so he / she / they went back to other frequencies. Doing something funny that is basically harmless, anonymous and noticeable while being very clever are the hallmarks of a prank in my book. A successful prank also means you don't get caught. Sam's timing has also appeared when college students may not have a lot to do. On my scale of pranks it would rank a 10 on a 1 - 10 scale - if a prank. I also doubt a drunk ham, but still wonder about a smart and underemployed person(s) with impressive radio and computer knowledge. Could be some government plot, but I'm still not convinced. Of course, all speculation on my part. Mark T. Agreed. This is a prank. And a very good one at that. Modifying a ham rig to do DSB is not that difficult. Nor is using a very cheap computer to command it to switch frequencies and play the audio. Heck, a microcontroller would do. Likewise a simple switchable antenna tuner could be used allow operation on the various frequencies from one antenna. There's nothing here to suggest any sort of government operation. Indeed, all the facts so far suggest the government is not involved. I just want to get my Yosemite Sam QSL ;-) -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

From the pattern of reception here in southern CA I see no reason to say that it's moved since then. As to the purpose of it, well that's another matter! Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Greetings: I've heard speculation that Sam is in Arizona or New Mexico. I'm in NE Arizona, using an RX-320 with a 600' north-south longwire about 80' off the ground. Here is what I observed at 05:15 UT: 3700: Sam sounds close, but not enough to cover all QRN 4300: lots of QRM here (FAX), but Sam is strong enough to block most of it 6500: QRM here too (weather and FAX), but Sam is barely readable underneath 10500: No Sam at all Sounds to me like: 1) Sam is close with very low power--which means east coast probably cannot hear him at this time 2) Sam is somewhat distant from Arizona/New Mexico Is my thinking correct? Well, you're certainly not in the ground wave zone. We need to find someone who can hear Sam on 3700 24 hrs a day. That person would be fairly close to Sam, within maybe 500 hundred or so miles. That would at least narrow down the QTH to a region of the country. The best comparison to Sam's 3700 kHz I can make is CHU on 3330 kHz. In my location, north central Maryland, I can get it most of the day, during normal solar/geomag conditions. -- --- Chris Smolinski Black Cat Systems http://www.blackcatsystems.com __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations
