The list is indeed still "alive" although not very active.

We do have a Spy Numbers board on the HFUnderground.com forum that is
significantly more active, you're all welcome to read/join in:

[Spooks] Spy Numbers Logging Datavase Re: Regenerating ? Schedules.

2014-07-22 Thread Chris Smolinski
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this
list

There's a database of loggings here: http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/

If loggings are entered into this database, using this easy to use form here,
rather than just typed as a message to the list, they automatically get entered
into the database: http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/numbers.html

No human intervention is required. It's that easy!

Loggings can then be searched here:
http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/dbSearchEntry.php3

This can make it much easier to collate information, to put together schedules.
And, all the loggings are publicly available for all to use. There's over
120,000 loggings in the database right now, in fact. The more people that
contribute their loggings, the more there will be for everyone else to see and
use.

There are some tools to display logs from the past during the current hour and
day of week, as well as the next hour, to see what stations might be on the
air. Right now it uses all loggings, so you get some old entries. This can
certainly be tightened up to display only loggings from the last year for
example. Let me know what would be best.

I'd also like to point out that the HFUnderground.com website has a forum for
numbers stations (in addition to forums for other radio related topics) here:
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/board,7.0.html

Hi All, Real question is; is there enough information out on the web to
regenerate the schedules without Enigma? And has anyone the time, patience
and incentive to do it and stay doing it? Then if yes, how can it be
distributed, so everyone gets what they need ?

I had a look at pryorm.org but was put off by seeing they are encrypting
stuff. I am pretty certain that the spooks GCHQ, Russians, Red Chinese and
various BVD type outfits in Europe, not to mention the occupants of black
glasstower at Fort George G Meade, in Maryland, can read their stuff faster
than it is typed. Giving users a false sense of security which is very very
dangerous. Always think before you write or send anything over the Web it is
 absolutely insecure!

[Spooks] UNID Spy Numbers Or Spoof 6955 AM 1527 UTC

2013-11-10 Thread Chris Smolinski
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this

The following series of numbers were transmitted on 6955 kHz AM, today at 1527
UTC:

6 15 1 8 20 7 14 9 4 14 5 16 13 9 16 4 13 3 25 14 14 21 2 18 15 6 20 14 5 4
9 19 5 18 16 15 12 4 9 19 19 25 5 11 14 15 13 1 9 1 9 1 9 1 9

I suspect that it is 1) a simple substitution cipher and 2) mostly likely a
spoof vs a real numbers station (but you never know).

Anyone care to take a stab at decoding it?

When you say like a dit, do you literally mean a short tone? Or more like a
 burst of static-like noise?

Lately I've been hearing relatively strong static-like noise bursts at
regular intervals, but I think it's probably just some kind of noise.

I posted a partial list of frequencies here:
http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,10533.0.html
They stopped at 1724z, we need to see if they go back on the air, the
frequencies may change.
The 4 and 5 MHz transmissions were S9, so a location within a few hundred miles
of me (roughly Washington DC) seem likely .

The Cuban Follies continue...

Presumed V2A, hearing the Cuban SS YL, but the carrier drops out every so
often.

No, I guess it is HM01, I heard a short PSK burst when the carrier came back
on. Now dead air. Back again at 2206z.

Pedro is insufficiently dedicated to the revolution.

7922

There appears to be two transmitters on each frequency, based on signal levels?

Depending on what you're looking to do, baudline
(http://www.baudline.com/) may be a possibility. Audacity
(http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is handy, but that is likely more
basic than you're looking for. Also check out iSpectrum
 (http://www.dogparksoftware.com/iSpectrum.html), which has some useful
capabilities that the other two don't.

The real problem I've run into (though admittedly I haven't put a lot of
effort into checking in a while) is that there's no all-in-one solution
for OS X - basically, you end up having to take the toolbox approach
when what you really need is a Swiss Army Knife.

One other suggestion: if you aren't already running Macports
(http://www.macports.org) and aren't adverse to using the commandline,
install it and check through the audio ports. Most of what's in there
tends to be CLI-based, but it at least gives you options for
pre-processing the audio before dragging it into whatever package you're
 using for visualisation.

The closest thing I can think of is running multiple copies of fldigi
 «http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html» simultaneously, but (1) I don't
think it's the tool you're looking for and (2) it'll probably crash
as when multiple applications vie for access to the audio port.

The next-best option might be to run a known-good Windows binary on
an Intel Mac (see «http://darwine.sourceforge.net/»), though I can't
tell you if it'll support application calls to the audio port (I'm a
 PowerPC guy).

The last resort would be to port source code from Linux to Mac OS X
 - «http://www.finkproject.org/» and «http://www.macports.org/»
will give you a good head-start. That said, finding relevant and
 recent Linux radio-related source code is frustratingly difficult;
compiling it would be doubly so.

This is why such posts (virus warnings) should not be made to the
list. They don't have anything to do with spy numbers stations. And
many of us don't run poorly secured operating systems, so even if it
was an active virus, we don't care ;-)

usually, we don't bring such news, but I think, in this case it is
necessary to protect our computers in our own interest.

Jochen, this news is months old !!

I'm on the computer every day and watch the news every night, including CNN,
this is the first I have heard of it from any source.

Pedro has really lost it. 7887 is running several different PSK

Ahh, now at 2009 they suddenly stopped, we've got the V2A YL voice

Another fine day in the workers paradise.

Hello Mike,

I saw your mail :-)

Hehe nice theory! Another one is that they decode CW with software and
the result is fed directly to the decipher engine which accepts cut
numbers. So now they're using a freeware BPSK decoder and dump the
output to the same engine :-)

From the WASP Network trial in Miami a few years back, it came out
that the Cuban agents were using laptops with decryption software
hidden on them. So it would certainly be a logical next step to move
to PSK31 for data transmission, so the agent could just tune his
radio at the correct time to automagically pick up and decode the
message.

The V21 babbler transmissions have been consistently appearing at
around 1400 for the past couple months at least. They have now
apparently shifted to around 1300 interestingly following the new
Daylight savings time here in the USA. Per my observations and thanks
to a member who contacted me off list the transmissions can be heard as
follows.

Yes, I tuned to 6529 this morning just before 9 AM local to hear V21,
realized that it was an hour early now due to the change to DST and
was coming up on 1300z not 1400z, but then was surprised to hear V21
anyway. Which makes me wonder now about the supposed purpose of V21,
which has typically been claimed to be related to Cuban Air Defenses.

[Spooks] Looking for historical spy numbers loggings

2006-12-21 Thread Chris Smolinski

Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this
list

I'm looking for anyone who has records of spy numbers loggings from
the past, to add to the spy numbers database,
http://www.spynumbers.com/numbersDB/

This includes even fairly old loggings even back to the 1960s and
1970s, as well as more recent logs that aren't already in the
database.

By having a central repository for spy numbers loggings, it makes it
easier for people who are researching patterns and trends in
transmissions to find the data that they need.

I know many listeners keep their own logs in various formats, such as
database and spreadsheet files, and even just plain text / word
processing files. I can convert the logs from practically any
format, as long as the data entry system is consistent. So you don't
need to do a lot of work, just email your logging file(s) to me.

Likewise, listeners who don't presently enter their current loggings
into the database, due to the effort involved (I know it can be
tedious if you have dozens of logs per day!) can also contact me by
email, and can send me their loggings daily in whatever format they
wish, as long as it is consistent, I can easily import the loggings
into the database for all to share.

Hi Chris,
Hearing this for quite a few weeks now, over here it's a clean
S9+10, 16.15 GMT, between the musical tones it's playing birdsong.
Think it's possibly the signature for a BC - but as there's an
oriental flavour to the music is it a Chinese musijam ?

Will watch it for a while.

Hi Mike,

I have a recent recording from a listener in Hungary, and it is
playing what you describe. Curiously when I was listening last night
(and when he was) it was only playing three or four notes, within the
other sound effects.

No tres(3) or nueve (9) are being sent, but the word group (that is
what it sounds like) is being sent in some of the groups. Sounds like
there's a slight problem with Fidel's latest text to speech
synthesizer. Maybe it was made in Venezuela.

The transmission stopped and restarted at around 1615z also.

There is a beep that is almost constant on 6940 KHz rite now it
started at 00:57 UTC, no voice anouncments are made. It then wend
silent until 01:00:56 UTC It started beeping again. Every 3:43
seconds it has what sounds like a Data burst.

At 01:09:19 it had another long beep followed by short beeps. It
dose the long beep every 28 seconds.

Could this be a time frequency?

If you know reply.

I read something interesting in, of all places, WikiPedia,
about letter beacons. Wiki states:

One beacon was found originating from a transmitter tied between
two palm trees on a remote beach in Florida.

Anyone know the story about that -- where it was located, freq, letter
sent, when found and by whom?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_beacons for the context.

Well, there are a few possible solutions. One would be an account/pwd
system. Which might not be as painful as you'd think, since a cookie
could store it in your browser, so you'd only need to enter it every
so often. Another would be one of those challenges where you need to
read the fuzzy image of some text, and type it it. I'll have to think
about it a little bit. Other suggestions are certainly welcome!

I'm hearing a beep on 6940 Khz. USB with tune in at 0203 - 0230+ (5/16/05).
It beeps for 5 - 20, 1 second beeps then rests about 4 seconds. If there is
a pattern, I haven't figured it out. Generally there is a Ute on this
frequency, but this is not that broadcast. It sounds a little like a time
station.

I've checked several numbers data bases (Numbers and Oddities, WUN) 2002
Klingenfuss guide (the newest I have) and can't find anything specific aside
from the Ute. Could be something mundane ... or not.

Anyone have an idea?

Hi
Today 16/03/2005 at 11:07 on 18000 USB I finally caught E15.
How very strange this station is!
After some time checking the tape recording I have decided that the calls I
heard were:
Queen-Baker-London then Baker-India-Charlie.
The signal was very poor and it did not come up on the other expected
frequencies later.
I have placed a mp3 clip on my spy number web page.
Have a listen and see if you agree with my QBL and BIC?
It was very difficult with the strong accent of the reader, I am least sure
about the Baker in both cases.
Oh loop bearing from my QTH was 90' but I don't feel that to be accurate!
My QTH West Sussex UK.
Good catch. I have been trying to hear E15 here (east coast USA) for
many years now, and still haven't. The time/freq choices make
propagation to NAm virtually impossible. I believe there has been one
logging of E15 in extreme north eastern Canada, so I still keep my
hopes up!

Chris,
I mean no disrespect but the veracity of this fact is becoming more
and more doubtful. Check this link:

The author writes The paper isn't generally available yet. At this
point I can't tell if the attack is real, but the paper looks good and
this is a reputable research team.
Dated as of February 15th. Paper yet to be published...mmm, I wonder why?
Papers take quite a while to be published, esp in a peer reviewed
journal. This is how you keep cold fusion type stuff out of good
journals.

Hi list,
Been hearing a blank carrier on 5919 for about 4 hours
so far, very very strong signal in my Pennslyvania
USA locale.
I make the freq to be 5919.958 kHz. Solid S9+20 signal here in
Maryland. Definately local propagation characteristics. Reminds me
of E5 carriers from Warrenton, in fact. Hmm... Bears watching.
I got 9519.975 with a receiver with GPS disciplined frequency standard.
However, it was -127dBm, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
Greetings from Northern Colorado...
That reminds me, I have not calibrated the SDR14 against WWV
lately... doing that yields a carrier freq of 5919.957. Hmm, not too
far off from before. -69dBm here with a 48mb dipole aimed towards
euroland (and presumably picking up off the back end aimed somewhat
towards Virginia ;-)

I need to look into getting a GPS freq ref to feed into the SDR14.
I guess I will just leave the 545 tuned in, and listen to hear if any
audio pops up.

just put this here: Late last night (early this morning, actually) I
caught my first ever Numbers station. I've been trying to hear one
since the late 90s, so it was kind of a big deal for me.
I recorded it in my audioblog:

Good catch for CA! Take a look at http://www.spynumbers.com for some
recent v2 (attencion station) logs, they're in the database. Also
look at the recent v2c schedule posted, there are several daily
transmissions that should be fairly easy to hear.

I am however old enough to have a young adult son who has truly impressive
knowledge of an arcane subject (unfortunately not radio) and a good sense of
humor. Looking at Mike and his friends, I still wonder about someone(s)
with really good radio knowledge (somewhat arcane) and a good sense of
humor. A stellar prank would be to do a broadcast that: 1) Jumps
frequencies (to use computer control knowledge) 2) uses an artificial wave
form that looks like a data burst (to throw folks off), 3) DSB (because it
is unusual), 4) loop a cartoon character (because it's funny), 5) runs
automatically from a remote location (to not get caught), and 6) appeals to
a small but enthusiastic group of people (so you get noticed and stay
anonymous at the same time). WWB frequencies might have been taking it too
far (that's interfering and might get the person caught by the FCC), so he /
she / they went back to other frequencies.
Doing something funny that is basically harmless, anonymous and noticeable
while being very clever are the hallmarks of a prank in my book. A
successful prank also means you don't get caught. Sam's timing has also
appeared when college students may not have a lot to do. On my scale of
pranks it would rank a 10 on a 1 - 10 scale - if a prank. I also doubt a
drunk ham, but still wonder about a smart and underemployed person(s) with
impressive radio and computer knowledge. Could be some government plot, but
I'm still not convinced. Of course, all speculation on my part.
Mark T.
Agreed. This is a prank. And a very good one at that. Modifying a ham
rig to do DSB is not that difficult. Nor is using a very cheap
computer to command it to switch frequencies and play the audio.
Heck, a microcontroller would do. Likewise a simple switchable
antenna tuner could be used allow operation on the various
frequencies from one antenna. There's nothing here to suggest any
sort of government operation. Indeed, all the facts so far suggest
the government is not involved.

I just want to get my Yosemite Sam QSL ;-)

Here in the south east I can clearly hear Sam on 10500 but barely on
6. However, I can/t make out what the voice is saying. Have any of
you figured it out?

I don't understand all this speculation about the location of YS...
http://www.spynumbers.com/YosemiteSam.html
states quite unequivocally that the FCC DFed it as being near
Albuquerque NM in December last year. From the pattern of reception
here in southern CA I see no reason to say that it's moved since
then.
As to the purpose of it, well that's another matter! Dan

Bear in mind... that's based on a ham radio intruder watch report, so
while I reported it as such, you never really know. I have never
heard that the station was officially busted.

 Greetings:
I've heard speculation that Sam is in Arizona or New Mexico.
I'm in NE Arizona, using an RX-320 with a 600' north-south longwire about
80' off the ground. Here is what I observed at 05:15 UT:
3700: Sam sounds close, but not enough to cover all QRN
4300: lots of QRM here (FAX), but Sam is strong enough to block most of it
6500: QRM here too (weather and FAX), but Sam is barely readable underneath
10500: No Sam at all
Sounds to me like:
1) Sam is close with very low power--which means east coast probably cannot
hear him at this time
2) Sam is somewhat distant from Arizona/New Mexico
Is my thinking correct?
Well, you're certainly not in the ground wave zone. We need to find
someone who can hear Sam on 3700 24 hrs a day. That person would be
fairly close to Sam, within maybe 500 hundred or so miles. That would
at least narrow down the QTH to a region of the country. The best
comparison to Sam's 3700 kHz I can make is CHU on 3330 kHz. In my
location, north central Maryland, I can get it most of the day,
during normal solar/geomag conditions.

A very significant observation. Sounds like Sam has a single
transmitter with automatic QSY every 10 seconds.
Yes, this was observed with the first Sam transmissions back in December.
